Abstract:The asteroid 2014 JO25, considered to be "potentially hazardous" by the Minor Planet Center, was spectroscopically followed during its close-Earth encounter on 19th and 20th of April 2017. The spectra of the asteroid were taken with the low resolution spectrograph (LISA), mounted on the 1.2-m telescope at the Mount Abu Infrared Observatory, India. Coming from a region close to the Hungaria population of asteroids, this asteroid follows a comet-like orbit with a relatively high inclination and large eccentricity. Hence, we carried out optical spectroscopic observations of the asteroid to look for comet-like molecular emissions or outbursts. However, the asteroid showed a featureless spectrum, devoid of any comet-like features. The asteroid's light curve was analyzed using V band magnitudes derived from the spectra and the most likely solution for the rotation of the asteroid was obtained. The absolute magnitude $H$ and the slope parameter $G$ were determined for the asteroid in V filter band using the IAU accepted standard two parameter H-G model. A peculiar, rarely found result from these observations is its phase bluing trend. The relative B-V color index seems to decrease with increasing phase angle, which indicates a phase bluing trend. Such trends have seldom been reported in literature. However, phase reddening in asteroids is very common. The asymmetry parameter $g$ and the single scattering albedo $w$ were estimated for the asteroid by fitting the Hapke phase function to the observed data. The asteroid shows relatively large value for the single scattering albedo and a highly back scattering surface.

Comparison of Asteroids Observed in the SDSS with a Catalog of Known Asteroids

Abstract:We positionally correlate asteroids from existing catalogs with a sample of $\about$18,000 asteroids detected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, Ivezić {\em et al.} 2001). We find 2641 unique matches, which represent the largest sample of asteroids with both accurate multi-color photometry and known orbital parameters. The matched objects are predominantly bright, and demonstrate that the SDSS photometric pipeline recovers \about90% of the known asteroids in the observed region. For the recovered asteroids we find a large offset (\about 0.4 mag) between Johnson V magnitudes derived from SDSS photometry and the predicted catalog-based visual magnitudes. This offset varies with the asteroid color from 0.34 mag for blue asteroids to 0.44 mag for red asteroids, and is probably caused by the use of unfiltered CCD observations in the majority of recent asteroid surveys. This systematic photometric error leads to an overestimate of the number of asteroids brighter than a given absolute magnitude limit by a factor of \about 1.7. The distribution of the matched asteroids in orbital parameter space indicates strong color segregation. We confirm that some families are dominated by a single asteroid type (e.g. the Koronis family by red asteroids and the Themis family by blue asteroids), while others appear to be a mixture of blue and red objects (e.g. the Nysa/Polana family). Asteroids with the bluest \iz colors, which can be associated with the Vesta family, show particularly striking localization in orbital parameter space.

Asteroid Family Associations of Active Asteroids

Abstract:We report on the results of a systematic search for associated asteroid families for all active asteroids known to date. We find that 10 out of 12 main-belt comets (MBCs) and 5 out of 7 disrupted asteroids are linked with known or candidate families, rates that have ~0.1% and ~6% probabilities, respectively, of occurring by chance, given an overall family association rate of 37% for asteroids in the inner solar system. We find previously unidentified family associations between 238P/Read and the candidate Gorchakov family, 311P/PANSTARRS and the candidate Behrens family, 324P/La Sagra and the Alauda family, 354P/LINEAR and the Baptistina family, P/2013 R3-B (Catalina-PANSTARRS) and the Mandragora family, P/2015 X6 (PANSTARRS) and the Aeolia family, P/2016 G1 (PANSTARRS) and the Adeona family, and P/2016 J1-A/B (PANSTARRS) and the Theobalda family. All MBCs with family associations belong to families that contain asteroids with primitive taxonomic classifications and low average reported albedos (pV_avg < 0.10), while disrupted asteroids with family associations belong to families that contain asteroids that span wider ranges of taxonomic types and average reported albedos (0.06 < pV_avg < 0.25). These findings are consistent with MBC activity being closely correlated to composition (i.e., whether an object is likely to contain ice), while disrupted asteroid activity is not as sensitive to composition. Given our results, we describe a sequence of processes by which the formation of young asteroid families could lead to the production of present-day MBCs.

Serendipitous Archival Observations of A New Ultra-distant Comet C/2019 E3 (ATLAS)

Abstract:We identified a new ultra-distant comet C/2019 E3 (ATLAS) exhibiting preperihelion cometary activity at heliocentric distances $\gtrsim\!20$ au, making it the fourth member of this population after C/2010 U3 (Boattini), C/2014 UN$_{271}$ (Bernardinelli-Bernstein), and C/2017 K2 (PANSTARRS). From serendipitous archival data, we conducted analyses of the comet, finding that the activity was consistent with steady-state behaviour, suggestive of sublimation of supervolatiles, that the cross-section of dust increased gradually on the inbound leg of the orbit, varying with heliocentric distances as $r_{\rm H}^{-1.5 \pm 0.4}$, and that the dust was produced at a rate of $\gtrsim\!10^2$ kg s$^{-1}$ within the observed timespan. Our modelling of the largely symmetric morphology of the comet suggests that the dust environment was likely dominated by mm-scale dust grains ejected at speeds $\lesssim\!0.4$ m s$^{-1}$ from the sunlit hemisphere of the nucleus. Assuming a typical geometric albedo of 0.05 and adopting several simplistic thermophysical models, we estimated the nucleus to be at least $\sim\!3$ km across. We also measured the colour of the comet to be consistent with other long-period comets, except being slightly bluer in $g-r$. With our astrometric measurements, we determined an improved orbit of the comet, based upon which we derived that the comet is dynamically new and that its perihelion distance will further shrink due to the Galactic tide. We conclude the paper by comparing the known characteristics of the known ultra-distant comets.

The Extraordinary Multi-Tailed Main-Belt Comet P/2013 P5

Abstract:Hubble Space Telescope observations of main-belt comet P/2013 P5 reveal an extraordinary system of six dust tails that distinguish this object from any other. Observations two weeks apart show dramatic morphological change in the tails while providing no evidence for secular fading of the object as a whole. Each tail is associated with a unique ejection date, revealing continued, episodic mass loss from the 0.24+/-0.04 km radius nucleus over the last five months. As an inner-belt asteroid and probable Flora family member, the object is likely to be highly metamorphosed and unlikely to contain ice. The protracted period of dust release appears inconsistent with an impact origin, but may be compatible with a body that is losing mass through a rotational instability. We suggest that P/2013 P5 has been accelerated to breakup speed by radiation torques.

Comet ATLAS (C/2024 S1) -- Second Ground-Based Discovery of a Kreutz Sungrazer in Thirteen Years

Abstract:Comet ATLAS (C/2024 S1) is a bright dwarf sungrazer, the second Kreutz comet discovery from the ground this century, 13 years after comet Lovejoy (C/2011 W3). The Population II membership of comet ATLAS sets it apart from the overwhelming majority of other bright dwarf sungrazers, most of them classified as members of Populations I, Pe, or Pre-I in the context of the contact-binary model. The new sungrazer might be closely related to comet du Toit (C/1945 X1), but most exciting is the possibility that it is a fragment of the parent comet of the Great September Comet of 1882 (C/1882 R1) and comet Ikeya-Seki (C/1965 S1). However, this scenario requires that the original orbital period of comet ATLAS -- rather poorly known at present -- be 886 yr. If its orbital period should turn out to be decidedly shorter, another scenario involving a 13th-century sungrazer should be preferred instead. More work on the orbit needs to be done. The apparent contradiction between the discovery of comet ATLAS and previous failures to find any dwarf Kreutz sungrazers in images taken with large ground-based telescopes at moderate heliocentric distances is explained by the propensity of Population II dwarf comets for outbursts, acting in collusion with extremely rare occurrences of these objects. Also addressed are the dynamical properties of perihelion fragmentation as well as the nature and timing of the expected 21st-century cluster of Kreutz comets, swarms of dwarf sungrazers, and related issues.

Jupiter Co-Orbital Comet P/2023 V6 (PANSTARRS): Orbital History and Modern Activity State

Abstract:The discovery of the transient Jupiter co-orbital comet P/2019 LD2 (ATLAS) drew significant interest. Not only will LD2 transition between being a Centaur and a Jupiter Family Comet (JFC) in 2063, the first time this process can be observed as it happens, it is also very active for its large heliocentric distance. We present observations and orbital integrations of the newly discovered transient Jupiter co-orbital comet P/2023 V6 (PANSTARRS), the second such object known. Despite similar modern orbits, V6 is significantly (15 times) less active than LD2 and most JFCs as determined via Afrho measurements at the same heliocentric distance. We find V6 is co-orbital between 2020 and 2044, twice the duration of LD2, but it will not become a JFC soon. We interpret these differences in activity as evolutionary, with V6 having lost a significant fraction of its near-surface ice compared to LD2 by previously being warmer. While V6's pre-encounter orbit was somewhat warmer than LD2's, future thermal modeling will be needed to understand if this can explain their differences or if a more significant difference further into the past is required. This is more evidence that LD2 is a pristine and ice-rich object, and thus it may display very strong activity when it becomes a JFC. We sue the differences between V6 and LD2 to discuss the interpretation of cometary activity at large heliocentric distances as well as the small end of the crater record of the Galilean Satellites. Continuing observations of both objects are highly encouraged.

Abstract:We announce the discovery of a main-belt comet (MBC), 2010 LH15 (alternately designated 2010 TJ175). MBCs are a rare type of main-belt asteroid that display comet-like activity, such as tails or comae, caused by sublimation. Consequently, MBCs help us map the location of solar system volatiles, providing insight into the origins of material prerequisite for life as we know it. However, MBCs have proven elusive, with fewer than 20 found among the 1.1 million known main-belt asteroids. This finding derives from Active Asteroids, a NASA Partner Citizen Science program we designed to identify more of these important objects. After volunteers classified an image of 2010 LH15 as showing activity, we carried out a follow-up investigation which revealed evidence of activity from two epochs spanning nearly a decade. This discovery is timely, with 2010 LH15 inbound towards its 2024 March perihelion passage, with potential activity onset as early as late 2023.

Abstract:We present the Citizen Science program Active Asteroids and describe discoveries stemming from our ongoing project. Our NASA Partner program is hosted on the Zooniverse online platform and launched on 2021 August 31, with the goal of engaging the community in the search for active asteroids—asteroids with comet-like tails or comae. We also set out to identify other unusual active solar system objects, such as active Centaurs, active quasi-Hilda asteroids (QHAs), and Jupiter-family comets (JFCs). Active objects are rare in large part because they are difficult to identify, so we ask volunteers to assist us in searching for active bodies in our collection of millions of images of known minor planets. We produced these cutout images with our project pipeline that makes use of publicly available Dark Energy Camera data. Since the project launch, roughly 8300 volunteers have scrutinized some 430,000 images to great effect, which we describe in this work. In total, we have identified previously unknown activity on 15 asteroids, plus one Centaur, that were thought to be asteroidal (i.e., inactive). Of the asteroids, we classify four as active QHAs, seven as JFCs, and four as active asteroids, consisting of one main-belt comet (MBC) and three MBC candidates. We also include our findings concerning known active objects that our program facilitated, an unanticipated avenue of scientific discovery. These include discovering activity occurring during an orbital epoch for which objects were not known to be active, and the reclassification of objects based on our dynamical analyses.

Asteroid secular dynamics: Ceres' fingerprint identified

Abstract:Here we report on the significant role of a so far overlooked dynamical aspect, namely a secular resonance between the dwarf planet Ceres and other asteroids. We demonstrate that this type of secular resonance can be the dominant dynamical factor in certain regions of the main asteroid belt. Specifically, we performed a dynamical analysis of the asteroids belonging to the (1726) Hoffmeister family. To identify which dynamical mechanisms are actually at work in this part of the main asteroid belt, i.e. to isolate the main perturber(s), we study the evolution of this family in time. The study is accomplished using numerical integrations of test particles performed within different dynamical models. The obtained results reveal that the post-impact evolution of the Hoffmeister asteroid family is a direct consequence of the nodal secular resonance with Ceres. This leads us to the conclusion that similar effects must exist in other parts of the asteroid belt. In this respect, the obtained results shed light on an important and entirely new aspect of the long-term dynamics of small bodies. Ceres' fingerprint in asteroid dynamics, expressed through the discovered secular resonance effect, completely changes our understanding of the way in which perturbations by Ceres-like objects affect the orbits of nearby bodies.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We apply the Hierarchical Clustering method (HCM) and Selective Backward Integration method (BIM) to search for associated families and young families for all main-belt active asteroids (MBAAs) known to date. We find four newly candidate sub-groups of known families, which include the candidate Brueghel family associated with 176P/LINEAR, the candidate 324P group associated with 324P/La Sagra, the candidate G1 group associated with P/2016 G1, and the candidate Tutenchamun family associated with (62412) 2000 SY178. Additionally, we identify three entirely new candidate families, the Interamnia family associated with P/2021 A5, the candidate 457P group associated with 457P/Lemmon-PANSTARRS, and the candidate Scheila family associated with (596) Scheila. We also reveal two newly identified family associations with known families between 259P/Garradd and the Adeona family, P/2019 A4 and the Jones family. All main-belt comets (MBCs) are likely associated with young and primitive families. Some unstable MBCs, which cannot be identified using HCM, may still originate from young and primitive families. However, due to dynamic diffusion, they cannot be conclusively linked to current families. Impact-disrupted asteroids could be linked with young families and they may change their original spectrum under the impact activity. Rotational fission of young and primitive asteroids might be a useful mechanism for facilitating the exposure of subsurface ice, and therefore triggering sublimation-driven activity. Rapid rotation and sublimation activity mechanisms are likely coupled. Therefore, further research should be made on such fast rotational asteroids that are located in primitive families.

Abstract:The number of asteroids with accurately determined orbits increases fast. The catalogs of asteroid physical observations have also increased, although the number of objects is still smaller than in the orbital catalogs. We developed a new approach to the asteroid family classification by combining the Hierarchical Clustering Method (HCM) with a method to add new members to existing families. This procedure makes use of the much larger amount of information contained in the proper elements catalogs, with respect to classifications using also physical observations for a smaller number of asteroids. Our work is based on the large catalog of the high accuracy synthetic proper elements (available from AstDyS). We first identify a number of core families; to these we attribute the next layer of smaller objects. Then, we remove all the family members from the catalog, and reapply the HCM to the rest. This gives both halo families which extend the core families and new independent families, consisting mainly of small asteroids. These two cases are discriminated by another step of attribution of new members and by merging intersecting families. By using information from absolute magnitudes, we take advantage of the larger size range in some families to analyze their shape in the proper semimajor axis vs. inverse diameter plane. This leads to a new method to estimate the family age (or ages). The results from the previous steps are then analyzed, using also auxiliary information on physical properties including WISE albedos and SDSS color indexes. This allows to solve some difficult cases of families overlapping in the proper elements space but generated by different collisional events. We analyze some examples of cratering families (Massalia, Vesta, Eunomia) which show internal structures, interpreted as multiple collisions. We also discuss why Ceres has no family.
LARGE PARTICLES IN ACTIVE ASTEROID P/2010 A2

Abstract:The previously unknown asteroid P/2010 A2 rose to prominence in 2010 by forming a transient, comet-like tail consisting of ejected dust. The observed dust production was interpreted as the result of either a hypervelocity impact with a smaller body or a rotational disruption. We have re-observed this object, finding that large particles remain a full orbital period after the initial outburst. In the intervening years, particles smaller than ∼3 mm in radius have been dispersed by radiation pressure, leaving only larger particles in the trail. Since the total mass is dominated by the largest particles, the radiation pressure filtering allows us to obtain a more reliable estimate of the debris mass than was previously possible. We find that the mass contained in the debris is ∼5 × 108 kg (assumed density 3000 kg m−3), the ratio of the total debris mass to the nucleus mass is ∼0.1, and that events like P/2010 A2 contribute <3% to the Zodiacal dust production rate. Physical properties of the nucleus and debris are also determined.

Catalog of Proper Orbits for 1.25 Million Main Belt Asteroids and Discovery of 136 New Collisional Families

Abstract:The proper elements of asteroids are obtained from the instantaneous orbital elements by removing periodic oscillations produced by gravitational interactions with planets. They are unchanging in time, at least if chaotic dynamics and non-gravitational forces could be ignored, and can therefore be used to identify fragments of major collisions (asteroid families) that happened eons ago. Here we present a new catalog of proper elements for 1.25 million main belt asteroids. We explain the methodology, evaluate uncertainties, and discuss how the new catalog can be used to identify asteroid families. A systematic search for families yielded 153 cases not reported in Nesvorný at al. (2015) -- 17 of these cases were identified in various other publications, 136 cases are new discoveries. There are now 274 families in the asteroid belt in total (plus a handful of families in the resonant Hilda population). We analyzed several compact families in detail. The new family around the middle belt asteroid (9332) 1990SB1 (9 members) is the youngest family found so far (estimated formation only 16-17 kyr ago). New families (1217) Maximiliana, (6084) Bascom, (10164) Akusekijima and (70208) 1999RX33 all formed 0.5-2.5 Myr ago. The (2110) Moore-Sitterly family is a close pair of relatively large bodies, 2110 and 44612, and 15 small members all located sunwards from 2110 and 44612, presumably a consequence of the Yarkovsky drift over the estimated family age (1.2-1.5 Myr). A systematic characterization of the new asteroid families is left for future work.

Abstract:Active asteroids are the Main-Belt asteroids that manifest physical signs of cometary activity, such as the presence of coma and tails and significant changes in brightness. This raises the question of whether these bodies require a more sophisticated approach to specifying the orbital parameters as compared to ordinary asteroids. In this work, we performed a series of improvements in the orbital parameters of active asteroids (6478) Gault and (248370) 2005 QN173/433P both with taking into account nongravitational accelerations (NGAs), which is common for comets, and without this procedure. For time intervals coinciding with the periods of activity of the considered asteroids, we have found statistically significant systematic deviations in the residuals (O–C) between the observed and calculated values in the positional observations of these bodies. Our results show that taking into account the nongravitational acceleration according to the Marsden model does not improve the representation of the observations. We also considered the possibility of the photocenter shift (PS) presence in the positional observations, i.e., the offset between the center-of-light and the center-of-mass. The obtained PS for asteroids (6478) and (248370) are directed away from the Sun with the values of 985 ± 54 and 1145 ± 119 km respectively, which is close to the sizes of the Hill spheres of the bodies. Taking into account the PS effect, one can eliminate the systematic deviations in the residuals for asteroid (248370) and significantly reduce them for asteroid (6478).

Abstract:We present initial results from observations and numerical analyses aimed at characterizing main-belt comet P/2012 T1 (PANSTARRS). Optical monitoring observations were made between October 2012 and February 2013 using the University of Hawaii 2.2 m telescope, the Keck I telescope, the Baade and Clay Magellan telescopes, Faulkes Telescope South, the Perkins Telescope at Lowell Observatory, and the Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope. The object's intrinsic brightness approximately doubles from the time of its discovery in early October until mid-November and then decreases by ~60% between late December and early February, similar to photometric behavior exhibited by several other main-belt comets and unlike that exhibited by disrupted asteroid (596) Scheila. We also used Keck to conduct spectroscopic searches for CN emission as well as absorption at 0.7 microns that could indicate the presence of hydrated minerals, finding an upper limit CN production rate of QCN<1.5x10^23 mol/s, from which we infer a water production rate of QH2O<5x10^25 mol/s, and no evidence of the presence of hydrated minerals. Numerical simulations indicate that P/2012 T1 is largely dynamically stable for >100 Myr and is unlikely to be a recently implanted interloper from the outer solar system, while a search for potential asteroid family associations reveal that it is dynamically linked to the ~155 Myr-old Lixiaohua asteroid family.

Abstract:We present fluxes and light curves for a population of asteroids at millimeter (mm) wavelengths, detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) over 18, 000 deg2 of the sky using data from 2017 to 2021. We utilize high cadence maps, which can be used in searching for moving objects such as asteroids and trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs), as well as for studying transients. We detect 160 asteroids with a signal-to-noise of at least 5 in at least one of the ACT observing bands, which are centered near 90, 150, and 220 GHz. For each asteroid, we compare the ACT measured flux to predicted fluxes from the Near Earth Asteroid Thermal Model (NEATM) fit to WISE data. We confirm previous results that detected a deficit of flux at millimeter wavelengths. Moreover, we report a spectral characteristic to this deficit, such that the flux is relatively lower at 150 and 220 GHz than at 90 GHz. Additionally, we find that the deficit in flux is greater for S-type asteroids than for C-type.

Abstract:Abstract In this work we map one of the most populated regions in the main belt - the asteroid family Themis. Computed with a good choice of parameters, the map enables us to get a refined picture of the dynamics in the family, to reexamine the role of resonances therein, to understand better the distribution of asteroids inside the region and to identify dynamical pathways along which particles can drift away.
