Abstract:We consider the family of entire maps given by $f_{\ell,c}(z)=\ell+c-(\ell-1)\log c-e^z$, where $c\in D(\ell,1)$ and $\ell\in\mathbb N$, $\ell\geq2$. By using the property of $f_{\ell,c}$ to be dynamically projected to an infinite cylinder $\mathbb C/2\pi I\mathbb Z$, where the thermodynamic formalism tools are well-defined, we prove as a main result on this work, the real-analyticity of the map $c\mapsto HD(\mathcal{J}_r(f_{\ell,c}))$, here $\mathcal{J}_r(f_{\ell,c})$ is the radial Julia set.

Abstract:We establish the exact dimensional property of an ergodic hyperbolic measure for a C 2 non-invertible but non-degenerate endomorphism on a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. Based on this, we give a new formula of Lyapunov dimension of ergodic measures and show it coincides with the dimension of hyperbolic ergodic measures in a setting of random endomorphisms. Our results extend several well known theorems of Barreira et al. (Ann Math 149:755–783, 1999) and Ledrappier and Young [Commun Math Phys 117(4):529–548, 1988] for diffeomorphisms to the case of endomorphisms.

Abstract:This paper is partly an exposition, and partly an extension of our work [1] to the multiparameter case. We consider certain classes of parametrized dynamically defined measures. These are push-forwards, under the natural projection, of ergodic measures for parametrized families of smooth iterated function systems (IFS) on the line. Under some assumptions, most crucially, a transversality condition, we obtain formulas for the Hausdorff dimension of the measure and absolute continuity for almost every parameter in the appropriate parameter region. The main novelty of [1] and the present paper is that not only the IFS, but also the ergodic measure in the symbolic space, whose push-forward we consider, depends on the parameter. This includes many interesting families of measures, in particular, invariant measures for IFS's with place-dependent probabilities and natural (equilibrium) measures for smooth IFS's. One of the goals of this paper is to present an exposition of [1] in a more reader-friendly way, emphasizing the ideas and proof strategies, but omitting the more technical parts. This exposition/survey is based in part on the series of lectures by Károly Simon at the Summer School "Dynamics and Fractals" in 2023 at the Banach Center, Warsaw. The main new feature, compared to [1], is that we consider multi-parameter families; in other words, the set of parameters is allowed to be multi-dimensional. This broadens the scope of applications. A new application considered here is to a class of Furstenberg-like measures.

Abstract:By introducing a novel expression for the Hausdorff and packing measures, denoted as Hφt and Pφt , respectively, in relation to the gauge function defined as φt(x)=h−1(tg(x)) for all positive values of t , we establish a connection between different approaches to defining the exact dimensions of Hausdorff and packing. Furthermore, we define both the upper and lower dimensions of Hausdorff and packing for a Borel probability measure and demonstrate that these dimensions can be represented using an entropy formula. This paper also addresses an intriguing question that has been raised multiple times regarding the structural representation of singular probability measures. We provide an affirmative response to this question by utilizing characteristic measures.

Generic dimensional and dynamical properties of invariant measures of full-shift systems over countable alphabets

Abstract:In this work, we are interested in characterizing typical (generic) dimensional properties of invariant measures associated with the full-shift system, $T$, in a product space whose alphabet is a countable set. More specifically, we show that the set of invariant measures with infinite packing dimension equal to infinity is a dense $G_\delta$ subset of $\mathcal{M}(T)$, the space of $T$-invariant measures endowed with the weak topology, where the alphabet $M$ is a countable Polish metric space. We also show that the set of invariant measures with upper $q$-generalized fractal dimension (with $q>1$) equal to infinity is a dense $G_\delta$ subset of $\mathcal{M}(T)$, where the alphabet $M$ is a countable compact metric space. This improves the results obtained by Carvalho and Condori in \cite{AS} and \cite{AS2}, respectively. Furthermore, we discuss the dynamical consequences of such results, regarding the upper recurrence rates and upper quantitative waiting time indicator for typical orbits, and how the fractal dimensions of invariant measures and such dynamical quantities behave under an $\alpha$-Hölder conjugation.

Intermediate dimensions of infinitely generated attractors

Abstract:We study the dimension theory of limit sets of iterated function systems consisting of a countably infinite number of contractions. Our primary focus is on the intermediate dimensions: a family of dimensions depending on a parameter $\theta \in [0,1]$ which interpolate between the Hausdorff and box dimensions. Our main results are in the case when all the contractions are conformal. Under a natural separation condition we prove that the intermediate dimensions of the limit set are the maximum of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set and the intermediate dimensions of the set of fixed points of the contractions. This builds on work of Mauldin and Urba\'nski concerning the Hausdorff and upper box dimension. We give several (often counter-intuitive) applications of our work to dimensions of projections, fractional Brownian images, and general H\"older images. These applications apply to well-studied examples such as sets of numbers which have real or complex continued fraction expansions with restricted entries. We also obtain several results without assuming conformality or any separation conditions. We prove general upper bounds for the Hausdorff, box and intermediate dimensions of infinitely generated attractors in terms of a topological pressure function. We also show that the limit set of a 'generic' infinite iterated function system has box and intermediate dimensions equal to the ambient spatial dimension, where 'generic' can mean either 'full measure' or 'comeagre.'

Spectral dimensions of Krein-Feller operators in higher dimensions

Abstract:We study the spectral dimensions of Krein-Feller operators for arbitrary for arbitrary finite Borel measures $\nu$ on the $d$-dimensional unit cube ($d\geq2$) via a form approach. We make use of the spectral partition function of $\nu$ as introduced in [Kesseböhmer and Niemann, Exact asymptotic order for adaptive approximations. 2023, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.16644" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.16644">arXiv:2312.16644</a>] and, assuming that the lower $\infty$-dimension of $\nu$ exceeds $d-2$, we identify the upper Neumann spectral dimension as the unique zero of the spectral partition function, thus revealing the intrinsic connection of these spectral and fractal-geometric quantities. We show that if the lower $\infty$-dimension of $\nu$ is strictly less than $d-2$, the form approach breaks down. Examples are given for the critical case, that is the lower $\infty$-dimension of $\nu$ equals $d-2$. We provide additional regularity assumptions on the spectral partition function, guaranteeing that the Neumann spectral dimension exists and coincides with the Dirichlet spectral dimension. Several prominent examples previously treated in the literature are provided, namely absolutely continuous measures and more generally Ahlfors-David regular measures, and examples not previously treated in the literature, namely self-conformal measures with or without overlaps, for which we show that both the Dirichlet and Neumann spectral dimensions exist and how they can be obtained from the $L^{q}$-spectrum of the measures. We demonstrate how our approach can be used to obtain upper and lower asymptotic spectral bounds for the case of Ahlfors-David regular measures. Moreover, we provide sharp bounds for the upper Neumann spectral dimension in terms of the upper Minkowski dimension of the support of $\nu$ and its lower $\infty$-dimension. Finally, we give an example for which the spectral dimension does not exist.

Abstract:Entropy is useful in statistical problems as a measure of irreversibility, randomness, mixing, dispersion, and number of microstates. However, there remains ambiguity over the precise mathematical formulation of entropy, generalized beyond the additive definition pioneered by Boltzmann, Gibbs, and Shannon (applicable to thermodynamic equilibria). For generalized entropies to be applied rigorously to nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, we suggest that there is a need for a physically interpretable (dimensional) framework that can be connected to dynamical processes operating in phase space. In this work, we introduce dimensional measures of entropy that admit arbitrary invertible weight functions (subject to curvature and convergence requirements). These "dimensional entropies" have physical dimensions of phase-space volume and represent the extent of level sets of the distribution function. Dimensional entropies with power-law weight functions (related to Rényi and Tsallis entropies) are particularly robust, as they do not require any internal dimensional parameters due to their scale invariance. We also point out the existence of composite entropy measures that can be constructed from functionals of dimensional entropies. We calculate the response of the dimensional entropies to perturbations, showing that for a structured distribution, perturbations have the largest impact on entropies weighted at a similar phase-space scale. This elucidates the link between dynamics (perturbations) and statistics (entropies). Finally, we derive corresponding generalized maximum-entropy distributions. Dimensional entropies may be useful as a diagnostic (for irreversibility) and for theoretical modeling (if the underlying irreversible processes in phase space are understood) in chaotic and complex systems, such as collisionless systems of particles with long-range interactions.

Boundaries of hyperbolic and simply parabolic Baker domains

Abstract:We study the boundaries of non-univalent simply connected Baker domains of transcendental maps (both entire and meromorphic), of hyperbolic and simply parabolic type. We prove non-ergodicity and non-recurrence for the boundary map, and additional properties concerning the Julia set and the set of singularities of the associated inner function, and the topology and the dynamics on the boundary of the Baker domain. In particular, we prove the existence of points on the boundary whose orbit does not converge to infinity through the dynamical access, in the sense of Carathéodory. Finally, under mild conditions on the postsingular set, we prove the existence of periodic points on the boundary of such Baker domains.

Abstract:We consider dynamics of compositions of stationary random C-2 diffeomorphisms. We will prove that the sample measures of an ergodic hyperbolic invariant measure of the system are exact dimensional. This is an extension to random diffeomorphisms of the main result of Barreira, Pesin and Schmeling (1999), which proves the Eckmann-Ruelle dimension conjecture for a deterministic diffeomorphism.

Abstract:The objective of this research is to establish a representation of the general Hausdorff and packing dimensions of compact sets in Euclidean space. This representation is formulated in terms of the lower and upper local dimensions with respect to two functions, denoted as h and g , which are associated with a probability measure defined on . Additionally, we establish a relationship that enables us to determine the general fractal dimensions by utilizing corresponding versions of these measures. These dimensions are defined as the supremum over the lower and upper general dimensions across all Borel probability measures. As a practical application of these findings, we introduce a variational principle for these general fractal dimensions. This principle establishes an equality between a parameter that is inherently linked to a given space or mapping and the supremum of specific values associated with a class of probability measures supported by the set, denoted as A . Furthermore, we propose two additional dimensions: the general concentration dimension and the general thin dimension. The concentration dimension is defined through the utilization of the Lévy concentration function and offers a relatively straightforward calculation method. It is closely connected to the mass distribution principle and often simplifies the determination of the general Hausdorff dimension of sets. The thin dimension, on the other hand, is grounded in the concept of the thin function, which can be seen as an anti-concentration function in relation to the Lévy function. This thin dimension also exhibits connections with the general fractal dimension.

On the equivalence between stochastic baker's maps and two-dimensional spin systems

Abstract:We show that there is a class of stochastic baker's transformations that is equivalent to the class of equilibrium solutions of two-dimensional spin systems with finite interaction. The construction is such that the equilibrium distribution of the spin lattice is identical to the invariant measure in the corresponding baker's transformation. We also find that the entropy of the spin system is up to a constant equal to the rate of entropy production in the corresponding stochastic baker's transformation. We illustrate the equivalence by deriving two stochastic baker's maps representing the Ising model at a temperature above and below the critical temperature, respectively. We calculate the invariant measure of the stochastic baker's transformation numerically. The equivalence is demonstrated by finding that the free energy in the baker system is in agreement with analytic results of the two-dimensional Ising model.

Abstract:In this note, we investigate the possibility of defining meaningful upper and lower quantization dimensions for a compactly supported Borel probability measure of order $r$, also for negative values of $r$. To this end, we utilize the concept of partition functions, which generalizes the idea of the $L^{q}$-spectrum and, in this way, naturally extends the work in [M. Kesseböhmer, A. Niemann, and S. Zhu. Quantization dimensions of probability measures via Rényi dimensions. $\textit{Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.}$ 376.7 (2023), 4661$\unicode{x2013}$4678]. In particular, we provide natural fractal geometric bounds as well as easily verifiable necessary conditions for the existence of the quantization dimensions. Exact asymptotics for the absolutely continuous case are also given.

Abstract:We construct entire functions with hyperbolic and simply parabolic Baker domains on which the functions are not univalent. The Riemann maps from the unit disk to these Baker domains extend continuously to certain arcs on the unit circle. The results answer questions posed by Fagella and Henriksen, Baker and Dominguez, and others.

Abstract:We consider Non Autonomous Conformal Iterative Function Systems (NACIFS) and their limit set. Our main concern is harmonic measure and its dimensions : Hausdorff and Packing. We prove that this two dimensions are continuous under perturbations and that they verify Bowen's and Manning's type formulas. In order to do so we prove general results about measures, and more generally about positive functionals, defined on a symbolic space, developing tools from thermodynamical formalism in a non-autonomous setting.

On absolute continuity of inhomogeneous and contracting on average self-similar measures

Abstract:We give a condition for absolute continuity of self-similar measures in arbitrary dimensions. This allows us to construct the first explicit absolutely continuous examples of inhomogeneous self-similar measures in dimension one and two. In fact, for $d\geq 1$ and any given rotations in $O(d)$ acting irreducibly on $\mathbb{R}^d$ as well as any distinct translations, all having algebraic coefficients, we construct absolutely continuous self-similar measures with the given rotations and translations. We furthermore strengthen Varjú's result for Bernoulli convolutions, treat complex Bernoulli convolutions and in dimension $\geq 3$ improve the condition on absolute continuity by Lindenstrauss-Varjú. Moreover, self-similar measures of contracting on average measures are studied, which may include expanding similarities in their support.

On the dimension of stationary measures for random piecewise affine interval homeomorphisms

Abstract:We study stationary measures for iterated function systems (considered as random dynamical systems) consisting of two piecewise affine interval homeomorphisms, called Alsedà--Misiurewicz (AM) systems. We prove that for an open set of parameters, the unique non-atomic stationary measure for an AM-system has Hausdorff dimension strictly smaller than $1$. In particular, we obtain singularity of these measures, answering partially a question of Alsedà and Misiurewicz from 2014.

Abstract:We prove a universal projection theorem, giving conditions on a parametrized family of maps $\Pi_\lambda : X \to \mathbb{R}^d$ and a collection $M$ of measures on $X$ under which for almost every $\lambda$ equality $\mathrm{dim}_H \Pi_\lambda \mu = \min\{d, \mathrm{dim}_H \mu\}$ holds for all measures $\mu \in M$ simultaneously (i.e. on a full-measure set of $\lambda$'s independent of $\mu$). We require $\Pi_\lambda$ to satisfy a transversality condition and $M$ to satisfy a new condition called relative dimension separability. We also prove that if the Assouad dimension of $X$ is smaller than d, then for almost every $\lambda$, projection $\Pi_\lambda$ is nearly bi-Lipschitz at $\mu$-a.e. $x$, for all measures $\mu \in M$ simultaneously. Our setting can include families of orthogonal projections, natural projections for conformal, non-autonomous or random iterated functions systems. As an application, we prove that for a parametrized family of contracting conformal IFS with natural projections $\Pi_\lambda$ satisfying the transversality condition, for almost every parameter $\lambda$ one has $\mathrm{dim}_H \Pi_\lambda \mu = \min\{ d, \frac{h(\mu)}{\chi(\lambda, \mu)} \}$ for all ergodic shift-invariant measures simultaneously. We also prove that for self-similar systems on the line with similarity dimension smaller than one, for Lebesgue almost every choice of translations the multifractal formalism holds simultaneously on the full spectrum interval $\left[\min \frac{\log p_i}{\log|\lambda_i|},\max \frac{\log p_i}{\log|\lambda_i|}\right]$ for every self-similar measure. We prove that the dimension part of the Marstrand-Mattila projection theorem holds simultaneously for the collection of all ergodic measures on a self-conformal set with the strong separation condition and without any separation for the collection of all Gibbs measures.

New Hausdorff type dimensions and optimal bounds for bilipschitz invariant dimensions

Abstract:We introduce a new family of fractal dimensions by restricting the set of diameters in the coverings in the usual definition of the Hausdorff dimension. Among others, we prove that this family contains continuum many distinct dimensions, and they share most of the properties of the Hausdorff dimension, which answers negatively a question of Fraser. On the other hand, we also prove that among these new dimensions only the Hausdorff dimension behaves nicely with respect to Hölder functions, which supports a conjecture posed by Banaji obtained as a natural modification of Fraser's question. We also consider the supremum of these new dimensions, which turns out to be an other interesting notion of fractal dimension. We prove that among those bilipschitz invariant, monotone dimensions on the compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that agree with the similarity dimension for the simplest self-similar sets, the modified lower dimension is the smallest and when $n=1$ the Assouad dimension is the greatest, and this latter statement is false for $n>1$. This answers a question of Rutar.

Abstract:For the simple random walks in percolation clusters on hyperbolic groups, we show that the associated harmonic measures are exact dimensional and their Hausdorff dimensions are equal to the entropy over the speed. Our method is inspired by cluster relations introduced by Gaboriau and applies to a large class of random environments on the groups.
