Abstract:In this paper, we consider a class of functionals subject to a duality restriction. The functional is of the form J(Ω,Ω*)=∫Ωf+∫Ω*g $\mathcal{J}\left({\Omega},{{\Omega}}^{{\ast}}\right)={\int }_{{\Omega}}f+{\int }_{{{\Omega}}^{{\ast}}}g$ , where f, g are given nonnegative functions in a manifold. The duality is a relation α(x, y) ≤ 0 ∀ x ∈ Ω, y ∈ Ω*, for a suitable function α. This model covers several geometric and physical applications. In this paper we review two topological methods introduced in the study of the functional, and discuss possible extensions of the methods to related problems.
On Positive Vectors in Indefinite Inner Product Spaces

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a linear space equipped with an indefinite inner product $[\cdot, \cdot]$. Denote by $\mathcal{F}_{++}=\{f\in\mathcal{H} \ : \ [f,f]>0\}$ the nonlinear set of positive vectors in $\mathcal{H}$. We demonstrate that the properties of a linear operator $W$ in $\mathcal{H}$ can be uniquely determined by its restriction to $\mathcal{F}_{++}$. In particular, we prove that the bijectivity of $W$ on $\mathcal{F}_{++}$ is equivalent to $W$ being {\em close} to a unitary operator with respect to $[\cdot, \cdot]$. Furthermore, we consider a one-parameter semi-group of operators $W_+ = \{W(t) : t \geq 0\}$, where each $W(t)$ maps $\mathcal{F}_{++}$ onto itself in a one-to-one manner. We show that, under this natural restriction, the semi-group $W_+$ can be transformed into a one-parameter group $U = \{U(t) : t\in\mathbb{R}\}$ of operators that are unitary with respect to $[\cdot, \cdot]$. By imposing additional conditions, we show how to construct a suitable definite inner product $\langle\cdot, \cdot\rangle$, based on $[\cdot, \cdot]$, which guarantees the unitarity of the operators $U(t)$ in the Hilbert space obtained by completing $\mathcal{H}$ with respect to $\langle\cdot, \cdot\rangle$.

Abstract:Vectorial dual-bent functions have recently attracted some researchers' interest as they play a significant role in constructing partial difference sets, association schemes, bent partitions, and linear codes. In this paper, we further study vectorial dual-bent functions , where , and denotes an n-dimensional vector space over the prime field . For certain vectorial dual-bent functions (called vectorial dual-bent functions with Condition A), we present a more concise characterization in terms of partial difference sets than the one given in Wang et al. (2023), and give new characterizations in terms of amorphic association schemes, linear codes, and generalized Hadamard matrices, respectively. When , we characterize vectorial dual-bent functions with Condition A in terms of bent partitions. Through the relationship between vectorial dual-bent functions and bent partitions, new characterizations of certain bent partitions in terms of amorphic association schemes, linear codes, and generalized Hadamard matrices are obtained. For a vectorial dual-bent function with , where , we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which the preimage set partition of F induces an association scheme. By using two classes of vectorial dual-bent functions, more association schemes are obtained.

Abstract:We will give an abstract characterization of an arbitrary self-adjoint weak$^*$-closed subspace of $\mathcal{L}(H)$ (equipped with the induced matrix norm, the induced matrix cone and the induced weak$^*$-topology). In order to do this, we obtain a matrix analogues of a result of Bonsall for $^*$-operator spaces equipped with closed matrix cones. On our way, we observe that for a $^*$-vector $X$ equipped with a matrix cone (in particular, when $X$ is an operator system or the dual space of an operator system), a linear map $\phi:X\to M_n$ is completely positive if and only if linear functional $[x_{i,j}]_{i,j}\mapsto \sum_{i,j=1}^n \phi(x_{i,j})_{i,j}$ on $M_n(X)$ is positive.

Abstract:Let $F$ be an algebraically closed field and let $n\geq 3$. Consider $V=F^n$ with standard basis $\{\vec{e}_1,\ldots,\vec{e}_n\}$ and its dual space $V^*= {\mathrm{Hom}}_{F-{\mathrm{lin}}}(V,F)$ with dual basis $\{y_1,\ldots,y_n\}\subseteq V^*$ and let $\vec{y} = \sum_i y_i\otimes \vec{e}_i\in V^*\otimes V$. Let $d<n$ and consider the vectors $\vec{q}_1,\ldots,\vec{q}_d\in V^*\otimes V$. In this note we consider the question of whether $\vec{y}(\vec{v}) = \vec{v} \in Span_F(\vec{q}_1(\vec{v}),\ldots,\vec{q}_d(\vec{v}))$ for all $\vec{v}\in V$ implies that $\vec{y}\in Span_F(\vec{q}_1,\ldots,\vec{q}_d)$. We show this is true for $d=1$ or $d=2$, but that additional properties are needed for $d\geq 3$. We then interpret this result in terms of subspaces of $M_n(F)$ that do not contain any rank 1 idempotents.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold satisfying a weighted Poincaré inequality, and let $\mathcal{E}$ be a Hermitian vector bundle over $M$ equipped with a metric covariant derivative $\nabla$. We consider the operator $H_{X,V}=\nabla^{\dagger}\nabla+\nabla_{X}+ V$, where $\nabla^{\dagger}$ is the formal adjoint of $\nabla$ with respect to the inner product in the space of square-integrable sections of $\mathcal{E}$, $X$ is a smooth (real) vector field on $M$, and $V$ is a fiberwise self-adjoint, smooth section of the endomorphism bundle $\textrm{End }\mathcal{E}$. We give a sufficient condition for the triviality of the $L^2$-kernel of $H_{X,V}$. As a corollary, putting $X\equiv 0$ and working in the setting of a Clifford module equipped with a Clifford connection $\nabla$, we obtain the triviality of the $L^2$-kernel of $D^2$, where $D$ is the Dirac operator corresponding to $\nabla$. In particular, when $\mathcal{E}=\Lambda_{\mathbb{C}}^{k}T^*M$ and $D^2$ is the Hodge--deRham Laplacian on (complex-valued) $k$-forms, we recover some recent vanishing results for $L^2$-harmonic (complex-valued) $k$-forms.

Abstract:This habilitation thesis centres on linearisation of vector-valued functions which means that vector-valued functions are represented by continuous linear operators. The first question we face is which vector-valued functions may be represented by continuous linear operators where vector-valued means that the functions have values in a locally convex Hausdorff space $E$. We study this problem in the framework of $\varepsilon$-products and give sufficient conditions when a space of $E$-valued functions coincides (up to an isomorphism) with the $\varepsilon$-product of a corresponding space of scalar-valued functions and the codomain $E$. We apply our linearisation results to lift results that are known for the scalar-valued case to the vector-valued case. We transfer the solvability of a linear partial differential equation in certain function spaces from the scalar-valued case to the vector-valued case, which also gives an affirmative answer to the question of (continuous, smooth, holomorphic, distributional, etc.) parameter dependence of solutions in the scalar-valued case. Further, we give a unified approach to handle the problem of extending vector-valued functions via the existence of weak extensions under the constraint of preserving the properties, like holomorphy, of the scalar-valued extensions. Our approach also covers weak-strong principles. In particular, we study weak-strong principles for continuously partially differentiable functions of finite order and improve the well-known weak-strong principles of Grothendieck and Schwartz. We use our results to derive Blaschke's convergence theorem for several spaces of vector-valued functions and Wolff's theorem for the description of dual spaces of several function spaces of scalar-valued functions. Moreover, we transfer known series expansions and sequence space representations from scalar-valued to vector-valued functions.

On monogenic functions and the Dirac complex of two vector variables

Abstract:A monogenic function of two vector variables is a function annihilated by the operator consisting of two Dirac operators, which are associated to two variables, respectively. We give the explicit form of differential operators in the Dirac complex resolving this operator and prove its ellipticity directly. This open the door to apply the method of several complex variables to investigate this kind of monogenic functions. We prove the Poincaré lemma for this complex, i.e. the non-homogeneous equations are solvable under the compatibility condition by solving the associated Hodge Laplacian equations of fourth order. As corollaries, we establish the Bochner--Martinelli integral representation formula for this differential operator and the Hartogs' extension phenomenon for monogenic functions. We also apply abstract duality theorem to the Dirac complex to obtain the generalization of Malgrange's vanishing theorem and establish the Hartogs--Bochner extension phenomenon for monogenic functions under the moment condition.

Abstract:In this article, we address a problem posed by F. Bayart regarding the existence of an infinite-dimensional closed vector subspace (excluding the null operator) within the set of supercyclic operators on Banach spaces. We resolve this problem by establishing the existence of the closed subspace. Furthermore, we prove that the set of supercyclic operators on $\ell_1$ contains, up to the null operator, an isometric copy of $\ell_1$.

Abstract:If $K$ is a compact Hausdorff space so that the Banach lattice $C(K)$ is isometrically lattice isomorphic to a dual of some Banach lattice, then $C(K)$ can be decomposed as the $\ell^\infty$-direct sum of the carriers of a maximal singular family of order continuous functionals on $C(K)$. In order to generalise this result to the vector lattice $C(X)$ of continuous, real valued functions on a realcompact space $X$, we consider direct and inverse limits in suitable categories of vector lattices. We develop a duality theory for such limits and apply this theory to show that $C(X)$ is lattice isomorphic to the order dual of some vector lattice $F$ if and only if $C(X)$ can be decomposed as the inverse limit of the carriers of all order continuous functionals on $C(X)$. In fact, we obtain a more general result: A Dedekind complete vector lattice $E$ is perfect if and only if it is lattice isomorphic to the inverse limit of the carriers of a suitable family of order continuous functionals on $E$. A number of other applications are presented, including a decomposition theorem for order dual spaces in terms of spaces of Radon measures.

Abstract:Although Ornstein's nonestimate entails the impossibility to control in general all the $L^1$-norm of derivatives of a function by the $L^1$-norm of a constant coefficient homogeneous vector differential operator, the corresponding endpoint Sobolev inequality has been known to hold in many cases: the gradient of scalar functions (Gagliardo and Nirenberg), the deformation operator (Korn-Sobolev inequality by M.J. Strauss), and the Hodge complex (Bourgain and Brezis). The class of differential operators for which estimates holds can be characterized by a cancelling condition. The proof of the estimates rely on a duality estimate for $L^1$-vector fields lying in the kernel of a cocancelling differential operator, combined with classical linear algebra and harmonic analysis techniques. This characterization unifies classes of known Sobolev inequalities and extends to fractional Sobolev and Hardy inequalities. A similar weaker condition introduced by Raiţă characterizes the operators for which there is an $L^\infty$-estimate on lower-order derivatives.

On Vector Spaces with Formal Infinite Sums

Abstract:We discuss possible definitions of categories of vector spaces over a fixed field $\mathbf{k}$ enriched with a notion of formal infinite linear combination in the likes of the formal infinite linear combinations one has in the context of generalized power series. We call these \emph{categories of reasonable strong vector spaces} (c.r.s.v.s.). We show that, in a precise sense, the more general possible definition for a reasonable strong vector space is that of a small $\mathbf{k}$-additive endofunctor of $\mathrm{Vect}_\mathbf{k}$ such that for every cardinal $\lambda$ there are no non-zero natural transformations from $\mathrm{Vect}(\mathbf{k},-)^\lambda /\mathrm{Vect}(\mathbf{k}, -)^{\oplus \lambda}$ to $X$. We denote the category such functors $\Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$. We compare $\Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$ to the category of ``naive" strong vector spaces $B\Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$ constructed in a specific way and to the c.r.s.v.s. $K\mathrm{TVect}_s$ of separated linearly topologized spaces that are generated by linearly compact spaces. We study the number of iterations of a natural approximate reflector on $\mathrm{Ind}\text{-}(\mathrm{Vect}^{\text{op}})$ needed to construct the orthogonal reflector onto $\Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$ because it relates to the problem of constructing the smallest subspace of an $X \in \Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$ closed under taking infinite linear combinations containing a given linear subspace of $H$ of $X$. We give a complete answer in the case $X$ is $\aleph_1$-ary. Finally we show how the natural monoidal closed structure on $\mathrm{Ind}\text{-}(\mathrm{Vect}^{\text{op}})$ induces one on $\Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$ and apply this to define an infinite-sum-sensitive notion of Kähler differentials for generalized power series. Most of the technical results apply to a more general class of reflective subcategories of $\mathrm{Ind}\text{-}(\mathrm{Vect}^{\text{op}})$.

Abstract:This paper examines functional equivariance, recently introduced by McLachlan and Stern [Found. Comput. Math. (2022)], from the perspective of backward error analysis. We characterize the evolution of certain classes of observables (especially affine and quadratic) by structure-preserving numerical integrators in terms of their modified vector fields. Several results on invariant preservation and symplecticity of modified vector fields are thereby generalized to describe the numerical evolution of non-invariant observables.

Abstract:This note provides a detailed proof of the fact that a linear vector field on a vector bundle has a flow by vector bundle isomorphisms. It implies then easily the existence of global solutions to linear non-autonomous ODE's, with a standard time-dependent flow construction. As a further application, a simple proof of the smooth triviality of vector bundles over contractible bases is given. Finally, a detailed elementary proof of the isomorphy (as Lie algebras) of all fibers of the kernel of a transitive Lie algebroid is given.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a category of short exact sequences of vector bundles and prove that it is equivalent to the category of double vector bundles. Moreover, operations on double vector bundles can be transferred to operations on the corresponding short exact sequences. In particular, we study the duality theory of double vector bundles in term of the corresponding short exact sequences. Examples including the jet bundle and the Atiyah algebroid are discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents a fairly general version of the well-known Gleason–Kahane– elazko (GKZ) theorem in the spirit of a GKZ type theorem obtained recently by Mashreghi and Ransford for Hardy spaces. In effect, we characterize a class of linear functionals as point evaluations on the vector space of all complex polynomials . We do not make any topological assumptions on . We then apply this characterization to present a version of the GKZ theorem for a vast class of topological spaces of complex-valued functions including the Hardy, Bergman, Dirichlet, and many more well-known function spaces. We obtain this result under the assumption of continuity of the linear functional, which we show, with the help of an example, to be a necessary condition for the desired conclusion. Lastly, we use the GKZ theorem for polynomials to obtain a version of the GKZ theorem for strictly cyclic weighted Hardy spaces.
