Abstract:We prove, assuming resolution of singularities in positive characteristic, an analogue of Siegel's theorem on sum of squares in positive characteristic. The method of proof combines techniques from central simple algebras with model theory and builds on work of Anscombe, Dittmann and Fehm. As an application, we show that, for each finite field $\mathbb{F}$ of odd characteristic and any positive integer $n$ coprime with the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}$, the first-order theory of the field given by the compositum of the fields generated by adjoining the $n$--th roots of all monic irreducible polynomials in $\mathbb{F}[t]$, of degree divisible by $n$ is undecidable in the language of rings with the variable $t$ as a constant.

Abstract:Colmez, Dospinescu and Niziol have shown that the only $p$-adic representations of $\rm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_p/\mathbb{Q}_p)$ appearing in the $p$-adic étale cohomology of the coverings of Drinfeld's half-plane are the $2$-dimensional cuspidal representations (i.e. potentially semi-stable, whose associated Weil-Deligne representation is irreducible) with Hodge-Tate weights $0$ and $1$ and their multiplicities are given by the $p$-adic Langlands correspondence. We generalise this result to arbitrary weights, by considering the $p$-adic étale cohomology with coefficients in the symmetric powers of the universal local system on Drinfeld's tower. A novelty is the appearance of potentially semistable $2$-dimensional non-cristabelian representations, with expected multiplicity. The key point is that the local systems we consider turn out to be particularly simple: they are "isotrivial opers" on a curve. We develop a recipe to compute the proétale cohomology of such a local system using the Hyodo-Kato cohomology of the curve and the de Rham complex of the flat filtered bundle associated to the local system.

Abstract:For a finite extension $F$ of ${\mathbf Q}_p$, Drinfeld defined a tower of coverings of ${\mathbb P}^1\setminus {\mathbb P}^1(F)$ (the Drinfeld half-plane). For $F = {\mathbf Q}_p$, we describe a decomposition of the $p$-adic geometric \'etale cohomology of this tower analogous to Emerton's decomposition of completed cohomology of the tower of modular curves. A crucial ingredient is a finitness theorem for the arithmetic \'etale cohomology modulo $p$ which is shown by first proving, via a computation of nearby cycles, that this cohomology has finite presentation. This last result holds for all $F$; for $F\neq {\mathbf Q}_p$, it implies that the representations of ${\rm GL}_2(F)$ obtained from the cohomology of the Drinfeld tower are not admissible contrary to the case $F = {\mathbf Q}_p$.
Étale cohomology of algebraic varieties over Stein compacta

Abstract:We prove a comparison theorem between the étale cohomology of algebraic varieties over Stein compacta and the singular cohomology of their analytifications. We deduce that the field of meromorphic functions in a neighborhood of a connected Stein compact subset of a normal complex space of dimension $n$ has cohomological dimension $n$. As an application of $\textrm{Gal}(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{R})$-equivariant variants of these results, we obtain a quantitative version of Hilbert's 17th problem on compact subsets of real-analytic spaces.

Torsion in $p$-adic étale cohomology: remarks and conjectures

Abstract:Let $C$ be a complete algebraically closed extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $\mathfrak{X}$ be a smooth formal scheme over $\mathcal{O}_C$. By the work of Bhatt--Morrow--Scholze, it is known that when $\mathfrak{X}$ is proper, the length of the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of the generic fiber $\mathfrak{X}_C$ is bounded above by the length of the torsion in the crystalline cohomology of its special fiber. In this note, we focus on the non-proper case and observe that when $\mathfrak{X}$ is affine, the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of $\mathfrak{X}_C$ can even be expressed as a functor of the special fiber, unlike in the proper case. As a consequence, we show that, surprisingly, if $\mathfrak{X}$ is affine, the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology groups of $\mathfrak{X}_C$ have finite torsion subgroups. We discuss further applications and propose conjectures predicting the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of a broader class of rigid-analytic varieties over $C$.

Lannes' $T$-functor and mod-$p$ cohomology of profinite groups

Abstract:The Lannes-Quillen theorem relates the mod-$p$ cohomology of a finite group $G$ with the mod-$p$ cohomology of centralizers of abelian elementary $p$-subgroups of $G$, for $p>0$ a prime number. This theorem was extended to profinite groups whose mod-$p$ cohomology algebra is finitely generated by Henn. In a weaker form, the Lannes-Quillen theorem was then extended by Symonds to arbitrary profinite groups. Building on Symonds' result, we formulate and prove a full version of this theorem for all profinite groups. For this purpose, we develop a theory of products for families of discrete torsion modules, parameterized by a profinite space, which is dual, in a very precise sense, to the theory of coproducts for families of profinite modules, parameterized by a profinite space, developed by Haran, Melnikov and Ribes. In the last section, we give applications to the problem of conjugacy separability of $p$-torsion elements and finite $p$-subgroups.

Abstract:We prove that the Serre spectral sequence of the fibration $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0, 1+p} \to E\mathbb Z/p \times_{\mathbb Z/p} \overline{\mathcal M}_{0, 1+p} \to B \mathbb Z/p$ collapses at the $E_2$ page. We use this to prove that: for any element of the $\mathbb Z/p$-equivariant cohomology with $\mathbb F_p$-coefficients of genus zero Deligne-Mumford space with $1+p$ marked points, if this element is torsion then it is non-equivariant. This concludes that the only "interesting" $\mathbb Z/p$-equivariant operations are quantum Steenrod power operations.

Arithmetic duality for $p$-adic pro-étale cohomology of analytic curves

Abstract:We prove a Poincaré duality for arithmetic $p$-adic pro-étale cohomology of smooth dagger curves over finite extensions of ${\mathbf Q}_p$. We deduce it, via the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence, from geometric comparison theorems combined with Tate and Serre dualities. The compatibility of all the products involved is checked via reduction to the ghost circle, for which we also prove a Poincaré duality (showing that it behaves like a proper smooth analytic variety of dimension $1/2$). Along the way we study functional analytic properties of arithmetic $p$-adic pro-étale cohomology and prove that the usual cohomology is nuclear Fréchet and the compactly supported one -- of compact type.

Mod-p Poincaré Duality in p-adic Analytic Geometry

Abstract:We show Poincaré Duality for $\mathbf{F}_p$-étale cohomology of a smooth proper rigid-analytic space over a non-archimedean field $K$ of mixed characteristic $(0, p)$. It positively answers the question raised by P. Scholze in [Sch13a]. We prove duality via constructing Faltings' trace map relating Poincaré Duality on the generic fiber to (almost) Grothendieck Duality on the mod-$p$ fiber of a formal model. We also formally deduce Poincaré Duality for $\mathbf{Z}/p^n\mathbf{Z}$, $\mathbf{Z}_p$, and $\mathbf{Q}_p$-coefficients.

Cohomological amplitude for constructible sheaves on moduli spaces of curves

Abstract: We give bounds for the cohomology of constructible sheaves on the moduli stacks M_{g,n} over the complex field. This enables us recover Harer's bound for the virtual cohomological dimension of the associated mapping class groups as well the theorem of Diaz on complete subvarieties of M_g. We also obtain such bounds for any open subset of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of M_{g,n} that is a union of strata. Our proof yields a template for obtaining similar bounds for the cohomological dimension for quasicoherent sheaves on M_{g,n}.

Abstract:We determine the cohomology of the closed Drinfeld stratum of $p$-Deligne--Lusztig schemes of Coxeter type attached to arbitrary inner forms of unramified groups over a local non-archimedean field. We prove that the corresponding torus weight spaces are supported in exactly one cohomological degree, and are pairwisely non-isomorphic irreducible representations of the pro-unipotent radical of the corresponding parahoric subgroup. We also prove that all Moy--Prasad quotients of this stratum are maximal varieties, and we investigate the relation between the resulting representations and Kirillov's orbit method.

Abstract:We show that for a braided Hopf algebra in the category of comodules over a cosemisimple coquasitriangular Hopf algebra, the Hochschild cohomological dimension, the left and right global dimensions and the projective dimensions of the trivial left and right module all coincide. We also provide convenient criteria for smoothness and the twisted Calabi-Yau property for such braided Hopf algebras (without the cosemisimplicity assumption on $H$), in terms of properties of the trivial <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://module.These" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> generalize a well-known result in the case of ordinary Hopf algebras. As an illustration, we study the case of the coordinate algebra on the two-parameter braided quantum group $\textrm{SL}_{2}$.

On some mod $p$ representations of quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}_p$

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified and $B$ be a quaternion algebra which splits at at most one infinite place. Let $\overline{r}:\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F)\to \mathrm{GL}_2(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ be a modular Galois representation which satisfies the Taylor-Wiles hypotheses. Assume that for some fixed place $v|p$, $B$ ramifies at $v$ and $F_v$ is isomorphic to $ \mathbb{Q}_p$ and $\overline{r}$ is generic at $v$. We prove that the admissible smooth representations of the quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ coming from mod $p$ cohomology of Shimura varieties associated to $B$ have Gelfand-Kirillov dimension $1$. As an application we prove that the degree two Scholze's functor vanishes on supersingular representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. We also prove some finer structure theorem about the image of Scholze's functor in the reducible case.

Towards the $p$-adic Hodge theory for non-commutative algebraic varieties

Abstract:We construct a K-theory version of Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze's Breuil-Kisin cohomology theory for $\sO_K$-linear idempotent-complete, small smooth proper stable infinity-categories, where $K$ is a discretely valued extension of $\Q_p$ with perfect residue field. As a corollary, under the assumption that $K(1)$-local K theory satisfies the Künneth formula for $\sO_K$-linear idempotent-complete, small smooth proper stable $\infty$-categories, we prove a comparison theorem between $K(1)$-local K theory of the generic fiber and topological cyclic periodic homology theory of the special fiber with $\Bcry$-coefficients, and $p$-adic Galois representations of $K(1)$-local K theory for $\sO_K$-linear idempotent-complete, small smooth proper stable $\infty$-categories are semi-stable. Cohomology rings of the moduli of one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study on the cohomology rings of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{d,\chi}$ of semistable one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane. We introduce a set of tautological relations of geometric origin, including Mumford-type relations, and prove that their ideal is generated by certain primitive relations via the Virasoro operators. Using BPS integrality and the computational efficiency of Virasoro operators, we show that our geometric relations completely determine the cohomology rings of the moduli stacks up to degree 5. As an application, we verify the refined Gopakumar--Vafa/Pandharipande--Thomas correspondence for local $\mathbb{P}^2$ in degree 5. Furthermore, we propose a substantially strengthened version of the $P=C$ conjecture, originally introduced by Shen and two of the authors. This can be viewed as an analogue of the $P=W$ conjecture in a compact and Fano setting.

Abstract:Let $K$ be the fraction field of a two-dimensional henselian, excellent, equi-characteristic local domain. We prove a local-global principle for Galois cohomology with finite coefficients over $K$. We use classical machinery from étale cohomology theory, drawing upon an idea in Saito's work on two-dimensional local class field theory. This approach works equally well over the function field of a curve over an equi-characteristic henselian discrete valuation field, thereby giving a different proof of (a slightly generalized version of) a recent result of Harbater, Hartmann and Krashen. We also present two applications. One is the Hasse principle for torsors under quasi-split semisimple simply connected groups without $E_8$ factor. The other gives an explicit upper bound for the Pythagoras number of a Laurent series field in three variables. This bound is sharper than earlier estimates.

Abstract:We give a generalization of Kostant's theorem on Lie algebra cohomology of finite dimensional highest weight representations to some infinite dimensional cases over a $p$-adic family of highest weight distribution representations. For proving this, we develop a theory of eigen orthonormalizable Banach representations of $p$-adic torus over an affinoid algebra, and we construct an eigen orthonormalizable weight completion of the distribution representations.

Rational $p$-adic Hodge theory for rigid-analytic varieties

Abstract:We study a cohomology theory for rigid-analytic varieties over $\mathbb{C}_p$, without properness or smoothness assumptions, taking values in filtered quasi-coherent complexes over the Fargues-Fontaine curve, which compares to other rational $p$-adic cohomology theories for rigid-analytic varieties $-$ namely, the rational $p$-adic pro-étale cohomology, the Hyodo-Kato cohomology, and the infinitesimal cohomology over the positive de Rham period ring. In particular, this proves a conjecture of Le Bras. Such comparison results are made possible thanks to the systematic use of the condensed and solid formalisms developed by Clausen-Scholze. As applications, we deduce some general comparison theorems that describe the rational $p$-adic pro-étale cohomology in terms of de Rham data, thereby recovering and extending results of Colmez-Niziol.

Non-algebraic geometrically trivial cohomology classes over finite fields

Abstract:We give the first examples of smooth projective varieties $X$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ admitting a non-algebraic torsion $\ell$-adic cohomology class of degree $4$ which vanishes over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}$. We use them to show that two versions of the integral Tate conjecture over $\mathbb{F}$ are not equivalent to one another and that a fundamental exact sequence of Colliot-Thélène and Kahn does not necessarily split. Some of our examples have dimension $4$, and are the first known examples of fourfolds with non-vanishing $H^{3}_{\text{nr}}(X,\mathbb{Q}_{2}/\mathbb{Z}_{2}(2))$.

Abstract:We obtain lower bounds for the dimension of fixed loci of abelian $p$-groups acting on smooth projective varieties. Those arise from modulo p Chern numbers, and are shown to be optimal. The bounds are expressed in a natural way by introducing an appropriate filtration on the modulo $p$ cobordism ring. They are obtained using equivariant localization methods, via the concentration theorem, and by a technique of "partition dividing".
