Abstract:This article presents a new approach of implementing signal direction-of-arrival estimation, in which subarray beamforming is applied prior to estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT). Different from the previous approaches, the beam-domain data from multiple adjacent pointing angles are combined in a way that the displacement invariance structure required by ESPRIT is maintained. It is intended to further obtain a sub-beamwidth resolution for a conventional multi-beam system already having small beamwidths. Computer simulations show that for typical multi-beam system applications the new approach provides improved estimation mean-square errors over the original ESPRIT, on top of reduced requirements for signal-to-noise ratio, number of snapshots, and computational time.

Abstract:The paper presents a general framework for spatial wavelet processing in the context of a uniform linear array. By defining the scale in terms of the spatial sampling resolution, the spatial multi-resolution structure inherent in the array signal has an explicit representation based on the wavelet decomposition. Beamforming can then be implemented on the subband data. The new framework is applied to a real sonar target detection problem, and the traditional time-delay beamformer shows an improved computational efficiency. The efficiency gain is proportional to the number of sensors for targets near the broadside direction.
Sparse-reconstruction-based high resolution beamforming and its application to multi-beam systems

Abstract:In this paper, we present a high resolution beam-forming (BF) method for multi-beam systems based on sparse reconstruction algorithms. The beamforming problem is represented as solving an underdetermined linear equation. By enforcing the spatial sparsity of echoes for each snapshot, the signal strength on a specfied direction of arrival (DOA) grid is solved using sparse reconstruction algorithms. Furthermore, a local refinement to conventional beamforming and using samples from the beam domain are proposed to increase grid accuracy and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the measurements. Both simulated data and experimental data are processed to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method applied to multi-beam systems. We observe that our method can achieve sharpened bottom echo curve and suppress grating lobes inherent in the system.

Abstract:Adaptive beamforming plays an increasingly vital role in various applications, including radar, sonar, telecommunications, and many other related fields. In this paper, we present an adaptive beamformer (called polarimetric Sparse-Reconstruction beamformer) based on cascaded sparse diversely polarized planar array. The cascaded sparse array consists of multiple parallel sparse linear subarrays, whose difference co-array has no holes. The beamformer is operated in the joint spatial and polarization domain; thus, can potentially suppress the interferences that are close to the desired signal with different polarization states. Two key building blocks of our proposed beamformer are polynomial rooting-based closed-form two-dimensional direction-of-arrival and polarization joint estimation procedures, where the involved polynomial coefficients are also derived. Then, the closed-form power distribution estimation is presented to reconstruct the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix by leveraging the sparsity of the desired signal and interferences in the joint spatial and polarization domain. Thus, the proposed adaptive beamformer is computationally efficient, since all the procedures involved are formatted by closed-form expressions. Finally, a set of simulation examples are given to evaluate the characteristics of the proposed cascaded sparse array as well as the performance and robustness of the proposed beamformer in different scenarios, and compared against several existing approaches.
Generalized Widely Linear Robust Adaptive Beamforming: A Sparse Reconstruction Perspective

Abstract:Widely linear (WL) robust adaptive beamforming exhibits superior performance by effectively leveraging the additional noncircularity information. However, existing studies focus solely on the noncircular (NC) impinging interferences, often overlooking main-lobe interferences and suffering from high computational complexity. To tackle these challenges, this article introduces a generalized WL sparse reconstruction (GWLSR) beamforming framework that addresses the general scenario where the impinging interferences consist of mixed circular and NC signals from a sparse reconstruction perspective. The framework considers two variants, GWLSR(1) and GWLSR(2), to accommodate circular and NC signal of interest, respectively. Within this framework, we can estimate the power of a larger number of interferences in the general scenario, supported by a root finding-based approach for direction-of-arrival (DOA) and NC phase (NCP) estimation. We then reconstruct the conjugate augmented interference-plus-noise covariance by leveraging the estimated DOAs, NCPs, and power associated with the interferences. The proposed beamformers are computational efficient as all the involved procedures can be formulated using close-form expressions. In addition, they can effectively suppress main-lobe interferences. Simulation examples are provided to illustrate the advantages of the proposed beamformers.

Abstract:Adaptive beamforming using sparse arrays can alleviate system burden with a sub-Nyquist sampling rate while achieving high resolution. To process multi-dimensional signals without losing structural information, tensor models can be incorporated in the beamformer design. Unfortunately, existing tensor beamformers are only suitable for uniform arrays and cannot handle ambiguous sidelobes caused by sparse sensor deployment. In this article, we propose a sub-Nyquist tensor beamformer based on a coprimality constraint. Specifically, the signals received by the sparse subarrays of a coprime planar array are modeled as two sub-Nyquist tensors. To enhance the desired component of the sub-Nyquist tensor signals, we formulate a pair of tensor beamformer weights and investigate the principle of tensorial signal filtering. A coprimality-based combined distortionless response constraint is then imposed to jointly optimize the tensor beamformer weights, which eliminates spatial aliasing. Moreover, to solve the joint coprime tensor beamformer weights optimization problem with non-convex tensor-based objective and constraint, we decompose it into interconnected bidirectional sub-beamformer optimization problems, which are further relaxed to ensure the convexity. The relaxed problems are solved by an alternating minimization approach with global convergence. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed sub-Nyquist tensor beamformer over conventional beamformers in terms of mainlobe enhancement and sidelobe attenuation.

Abstract:In this paper, a new eigenspace-based beamforming method is proposed. In this method, in order to reduce the sidelobe level of the beam pattern, the array weight of the conventional eigenspace-based beamformer is modified by adding a noise subspace weight which is obtained by using the penalty function method. And the computation of the noise subspace weight using penalty function method is shown to be equivalent to a constrained LS problem. An efficient adaptive algorithm for the array weight is developed based on fast subspace tracking technique. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our method. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:The previous robust adaptive beamformer for sparse array enjoys performance improvement due to enhanced degrees-of-freedom (DOFs), while the polarization diversity of signals is not considered. The polarization diversity is an important factor that could be exploited to design a more functional beamformer. Specifically, in this paper, a cascaded sparse array (CSA) composed of diversely polarized antennas, which is polarization sensitive and has reduced mutual coupling, is proposed with a closed-form expression for the array geometry. Then, a polarimetric sparse reconstruction beamformer operating in the joint spatial and polarization domain is proposed for the CSA, and it is capable of suppressing the interferences using the information in the additional polarization domain with enhanced DOFs. As a result, it not only offers reduced costs but also improved functionality, demonstrating its potential value in future wireless communications. The polynomial rooting based joint direction-of-arrival and polarization estimation procedures are then given to support the power distribution estimation in a closed-form manner. Subsequently, the estimated steering vector of the desired signal and the reconstructed interference-plus-noise covariance matrix are combined to calculate the proposed beamformer. Numerical simulations are included to verify the potential advantages of the proposed CSA as well as the superior performance and robustness of the proposed beamformer.
A High-Resolution and Low-Frequency Acoustic Beamforming Based on Bayesian Inference and Non-Synchronous Measurements

Abstract:Beamforming is a powerful technique to achieve acoustic imaging in far-field. However, its spatial resolution is strongly blurred by the point spread function (PSF) of phased microphone array. Due to the limitation of array aperture and microphone density, the PSF is far from Dirac delta function, so that it is difficult to obtain a high-resolution beamforming image at low-frequencies (e.g.500-1500Hz). This paper proposes a Bayesian inference method based on Non-synchronous Array Measurements (Bi-NAM) so as to refine the PSF and break through the beamforming limitation for low-frequency source imaging. Firstly, by sequentially moving prototype array at different positions, the non-synchronous measurements can get a sizeable synthetic aperture and high density of microphones. The synthetic cross-spectrum matrix (CSM) can significantly improve the beamforming performance. To confine the approximation error of synthetic CSM and the uncertainty of forward model, as well as the noise interference, a Bayesian inference based on joint maximum a posterior (JMAP) is proposed to solve an ill-posed inverse problem. A Student-t prior is employed to enforce the sparse property of acoustic strength distribution. The background noise can be adaptively modeled by the Student-t distribution, which is related to some of the typical symmetric distributions. Then the hyper-parameters in JMAP inference are efficiently estimated by the Bayesian hierarchical framework. Through experimental data, the proposed Bi-NAM approach is confirmed to achieve high-resolution acoustic imaging at 1000Hz and 800Hz, respectively, even under the Laplace noise interference.

Abstract:Beamforming is a significant technique applied in many fields to infer the azimuth parameters of the acoustic source and improve the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the array. However, both the azimuth resolution and the degrees of freedom (DOF) for multi-source detection are limited by the finite array aperture. In this paper, a high-resolution, DOF-improved beamforming azimuth spectrum estimation method using an enhanced virtual aperture (EVA) extension is proposed. Firstly, a spectrum selection algorithm is presented, which effectively reduces the computation time through the time–frequency domain transformation. Secondly, an EVA extension algorithm is conducted through the joint expansion of bidirectional linear prediction (LP) and inverse beamforming (IBF) for increasing the number of the virtual array element significantly. Thirdly, the modified minimum variance distortion-less response (MVDR) based on the EVA array is proposed to obtain a sufficiently high azimuth resolution, improved DOF, and low sidelobes with relatively few calculations. For verification, the effectiveness of the proposed EVA-MVDR method is simulated by using MATLAB and experimented by adopting a shipborne platform on the lake, and the performance advantages in multi-source detection and background noise suppression over existing techniques are confirmed.

Virtual Augmentation of the Beamforming Array Based on a Sub-cross-spectral Matrix Computation for Localizing Stationary Signal Noise Sources

Abstract:This paper presents a generalized algorithm called the sub-cross-spectral matrix (SCSM) beamforming technique for the virtual augmentation of an N- channel beamforming array based on sequential computation of the cross-spectral matrix (CSM) terms for localizing stationary signal sources. To this end, first, the diagonal sub-cross-spectral matrices (SCSMs) of the N -channel array pertaining to M different spatial locations were obtained. Next, the off-diagonal SCSMs were systematically computed by directly evaluating the cross-spectral terms between some microphones placed in the array at location and the remaining microphones placed in the array at location . As a proof of concept, the SCSM beamforming was used to virtually construct a 32 - channel planar Underbrink spiral array by sequentially measuring data using microphone pairs. The resultant 2-D beamforming map of a loudspeaker source was found to be nearly identical to the counterpart result produced when data from 32 - channel simultaneous measurements were used. The SCSM technique was then extended to increase the density and aperture of a planar array by constructing a virtual 64-channel planar array from 32-channel simultaneous measurements. For the former case, the source maps were found to be identical to the counterpart results obtained from the existing geometric mean and combined CSM algorithms. However, for the latter case, the SCSM beamforming delivered a noticeably improved focal-resolution along the direction in which there was a virtual increase in aperture. For localizing loudspeaker source(s) in a 3-D domain, the SCSM beamforming implemented using two orthogonal Underbrink arrays was shown to deliver a significantly improved resolution (focal lobe) and unambiguous localization because it considers the complete CSM unlike the multiplicative beamforming and combined CSM algorithms which do not account for the phase-information between the two orthogonal arrays.

A Low-complexity Minimum-variance Beamformer Based on Orthogonal Decomposition of the Compounded Subspace

Abstract:Minimum-variance (MV) beamforming, as a typical adaptive beamforming method, has been widely studied in medical ultrasound imaging. This method achieves higher spatial resolution than traditional delay-and-sum (DAS) beamforming by minimizing the total output power while maintaining the desired signals. However, it suffers from high computational complexity due to the heavy calculation load when determining the inverse of the high-dimensional matrix. Low-complexity MV algorithms have been studied recently. In this study, we propose a novel MV beamformer based on orthogonal decomposition of the compounded subspace (CS) of the covariance matrix in synthetic aperture (SA) imaging, which aims to reduce the dimensions of the covariance matrix and therefore reduce the computational complexity. Multiwave spatial smoothing is applied to the echo signals for the accurate estimation of the covariance matrix, and adaptive weight vectors are calculated from the low-dimensional subspace of the original covariance matrix. We conducted simulation, experimental and in vivo studies to verify the performance of the proposed method. The results indicate that the proposed method performs well in maintaining the advantage of high spatial resolution and effectively reduces the computational complexity compared with the standard MV beamformer. In addition, the proposed method shows good robustness against sound velocity errors.
Virtual covariance matrix reconstruction-based adaptive beamforming for small aperture array

Abstract:Recently, many robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) algorithms have been proposed to improve beamforming performance when model mismatches occur. For a uniform linear array, a larger aperture array can obtain higher array gain for beamforming when the inter-sensor spacing is fixed. However, only the small aperture array can be used in the equipment limited by platform installation space, significantly weakening beamforming output performance. This paper proposes two beamforming methods for improving beamforming output in small aperture sensor arrays. The first method employs an integration algorithm that combines angular sector and gradient vector search to reconstruct the interference covariance matrix (ICM). Then, the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) is reconstructed combined with the estimated noise power. The INCM and ICM are used to optimize the desired signal steering vector (SV) by solving a quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problem. The second method proposes a beamforming algorithm based on a virtual extended array to increase the degree of freedom of the beamformer. First, the virtual conjugated array element is designed based on the structural characteristics of a uniform linear array, and received data at the virtual array element are obtained using a linear prediction method. Then, the extended INCM is reconstructed, and the desired signal SV is optimized using an algorithm similar to the actual array. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods under different conditions.

Abstract:Frequency-Invariant (FI) beamforming is a well known array signal processing technique used in many applications. In this paper, an algorithm that attempts to optimize the frequency invariant beampattern solely for the mainlobe, and relax the FI requirement on the sidelobe is proposed. This sacrifice on performance in the undesired region is traded off for better performance in the desired region as well as reduced number of microphones employed. The objective function is designed to minimize the overall spatial response of the beamformer with a constraint on the gain being smaller than a pre-defined threshold value across a specific frequency range and at a specific angle. This problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem and the solution is obtained by using the Second Order Cone Programming (SOCP) technique. An analysis of the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is presented as well as its performance. The performance is evaluated via computer simulation for different number of sensors and different threshold values. Simulation results show that, the proposed algorithm is able to achieve a smaller mean square error of the spatial response gain for the specific FI region compared to existing algorithms.
A Robust Beamformer Based on Weighted Sparse Constraint

Abstract:Applying a sparse constraint on the beam pattern has been suggested to suppress the sidelobe level of a minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer. In this letter, we introduce a weighted sparse constraint in the beamformer design to provide a lower sidelobe level and deeper nulls for interference avoidance, as compared with a conventional MVDR beamformer. The proposed beamformer also shows improved robustness against the mismatch between the steering angle and the direction of arrival (DOA) of the desired signal, caused by imperfect estimation of DOA.

Adaptive Circular Beamforming Using Multi-Beam Structure

Abstract:In this paper, a broadband beamspace adaptive microphone array that constructs a multibeam network is proposed. A beampattern synthesis method that has its frequency invariant property focusing on the desired direction only was used to form the beams. The main idea is to replace the blocking matrix and the quiescent vector in the conventional General Sidelobe Canceler (GSC) with the frequency invariant beam-pattern synthesis method. Simulation results show that this proposed method has faster convergence rate than an existing algorithm.

Abstract:When the array structure of the sparse arrays (SA) cannot be determined, the existing beamforming algorithms designed according to specific formations such as coprime arrays (CA), nested arrays (NA), etc. will fail. To solve this problem, we propose two algorithms that are suitable for a variety of SA. In the first method, assuming that the desired signal is a non-Gaussian signal, the desired signal direction vector (DSDV) is estimated using the fourth-order cumulant, and then the interference plus noise covariance matrix (INCM) is reconstructed by integrating the area outside the desired signal. When the desired signal is a Gaussian signal, we propose the second method. The second method estimates the power and direction of arrival (DOA) of the signals by performing eigenvalue decomposition on the sampled covariance matrix (SCM) and finally calculates the weight vector. However, this method needs to estimate the DOA of the signals, so it has certain requirements for the SA structure design. The simulation results show that the proposed method has good performance and strong robustness under different SA.

Adaptive Beamforming Technique For Virtual Antenna Using Modified Interpolated Spatial Smoothing Algorithm

Abstract:In this paper we present an effective algorithm to inhibit the coherent interference with the virtual antenna based on the traditional interpolated spatial smoothing algorithm. Using the interference subspace projection concept, we establish an interference space utilizing the virtual array interfere steering vectors and then project the transformation matrix to it. The theoretical analysis has demonstrated that the interference components in the virtual covariance matrix can be enhanced. Then by employing the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beam forming method, it can improve the robustness of adaptive beamforming with virtual antenna array, and significantly enlarge the inhibition gains on the coherent interference and output signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR).
Sparse Spatial Smoothing: Reduced Complexity and Improved Beamforming Gain via Sparse Sub-Arrays

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of single snapshot Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation, which is of great importance in a wide-range of applications including automotive radar. A popular approach to achieving high angular resolution when only one temporal snapshot is available is via subspace methods using spatial smoothing. This involves leveraging spatial shift-invariance in the antenna array geometry, typically a uniform linear array (ULA), to rearrange the single snapshot measurement vector into a spatially smoothed matrix that reveals the signal subspace of interest. However, conventional approaches using spatially shifted ULA sub-arrays can lead to a prohibitively high computational complexity due to the large dimensions of the resulting spatially smoothed matrix. Hence, we propose to instead employ judiciously designed sparse sub-arrays, such as nested arrays, to reduce the computational complexity of spatial smoothing while retaining the aperture and identifiability of conventional ULA-based approaches. Interestingly, this idea also suggests a novel beamforming method which linearly combines multiple spatially smoothed matrices corresponding to different sets of shifts of the sparse (nested) sub-array. This so-called shift-domain beamforming method is demonstrated to boost the effective SNR, and thereby resolution, in a desired angular region of interest, enabling single snapshot low-complexity DOA estimation with identifiability guarantees.
