Abstract:In this paper we study the satisfiability and solutions of group equations when combinatorial, algebraic and language-theoretic constraints are imposed on the solutions. We show that the solutions to equations with length, lexicographic order, abelianisation or context-free constraints added, can be effectively produced in finitely generated virtually abelian groups. Crucially, we translate each of the constraints above into a rational set in an effective way, and so reduce each problem to solving equations with rational constraints, which is decidable and well understood in virtually abelian groups. A byproduct of our results is that the growth series of a virtually abelian group, with respect to any generating set and any weight, is effectively computable. This series is known to be rational by a result of Benson, but his proof is non-constructive.

Abstract:The survey provides an overview of the work done in the last 10 years to characterise solutions to equations in groups in terms of formal languages. We begin with the work of Ciobanu, Diekert and Elder, who showed that solutions to systems of equations in free groups in terms of reduced words are expressible as EDT0L languages. We provide a sketch of their algorithm, and describe how the free group results extend to hyperbolic groups. The characterisation of solutions as EDT0L languages is very robust, and many group constructions preserve this, as shown by Levine. The most recent progress in the area has been made for groups without negative curvature, such as virtually abelian, the integral Heisenberg group, or the soluble Baumslag-Solitar groups, where the approaches to describing the solutions are different from the negative curvature groups. In virtually abelian groups the solutions sets are in fact rational, and one can obtain them as $m$-regular sets. In the Heisenberg group producing the solutions to a single equation reduces to understanding the solutions to quadratic Diophantine equations and uses number theoretic techniques. In the Baumslag-Solitar groups the methods are combinatorial, and focus on the interplay of normal forms to solve particular classes of equations. In conclusion, EDT0L languages give an effective and simple combinatorial characterisation of sets of seemingly high complexity in many important classes of groups.

Linear equations with monomial constraints and decision problems in abelian-by-cyclic groups

Abstract:We show that it is undecidable whether a system of linear equations over the Laurent polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[X^{\pm}]$ admit solutions where a specified subset of variables take value in the set of monomials $\{X^z \mid z \in \mathbb{Z}\}$. In particular, we construct a finitely presented $\mathbb{Z}[X^{\pm}]$-module, where it is undecidable whether a linear equation $X^{z_1} \boldsymbol{f}_1 + \cdots + X^{z_n} \boldsymbol{f}_n = \boldsymbol{f}_0$ has solutions $z_1, \ldots, z_n \in \mathbb{Z}$. This contrasts the decidability of the case $n = 1$, which can be deduced from Noskov's Lemma. We apply this result to settle a number of problems in computational group theory. We show that it is undecidable whether a system of equations has solutions in the wreath product $\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z}$, providing a negative answer to an open problem of Kharlampovich, López and Miasnikov (2020). We show that there exists a finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic group in which the problem of solving a single quadratic equation is undecidable. We also construct a finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic group, different to that of Mishchenko and Treier (2017), in which the Knapsack Problem is undecidable. In contrast, we show that the problem of Coset Intersection is decidable in all finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic groups.

Abstract:A result of Baumslag and Roseblade states that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of two free groups is virtually a direct product of free groups. In this paper we generalise this result to the class of cyclic subgroup separable graphs of groups with free abelian vertex groups and cyclic edge groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of two groups in this class is virtually $H$-by-(free abelian), where $H$ is the direct product of two groups in the class. In particular, our result applies to 2-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups and residually finite tubular groups. Furthermore, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of the direct product of two $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.

Abstract:We survey solvability of equations in wreath products of groups, and prove that the quadratic diophantine problem is solvable in wreath products of Abelian groups. We consider the related question of determining commutator width, and prove that the quadratic diophantine problem is also solvable in Baumslag's finitely presented metabelian group. This text is a short version of an extensive article by the first-named authors.

Abstract:In this paper we give some conditions in which a direct product of groups is $\mathcal{V}-$capable if and only if each of its factors is $\mathcal{V}-$capable for some varieties $\mathcal{V}$. Moreover, we give some conditions in which a direct product of a finite family of pairs of groups is capable if and only if each of its factors is a capable pair of groups.

Abstract:We express the solutions to quadratic equations with two variables in the ring of integers using EDT0L languages. We use this to show that EDT0L languages can be used to describe the solutions to one-variable equations in the Heisenberg group. This is done by reducing the question of solving a one-variable equation in the Heisenberg group to solving an equation in the ring of integers, exploiting the strong link between the ring of integers and nilpotent groups.

Abstract:A result by Bridson, Howie, Miller, and Short states that if $S$ is a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of free groups, then $S$ is virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of free groups. Moreover, if $S$ is a subgroup of type $FP_n$ of the direct product of $n$ free groups, then the nilpotent extension is finite, so $S$ is actually virtually the direct product of free groups. In this paper, these results are generalized to $2$-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs is still virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of subgroups. If $S$ is moreover a type $FP_n$ subgroup of the direct product of $n$ $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs, then $S$ is commensurable to a kernel of a character of a direct product of subgroups. Finally, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of direct products of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.

The Identity Problem in virtually solvable matrix groups over algebraic numbers

Abstract:The Tits alternative states that a finitely generated matrix group either contains a nonabelian free subgroup $F_2$, or it is virtually solvable. This paper considers two decision problems in virtually solvable matrix groups: the Identity Problem (does a given finitely generated subsemigroup contain the identity matrix?), and the Group Problem (is a given finitely generated subsemigroup a group?). We show that both problems are decidable in virtually solvable matrix groups over the field of algebraic numbers $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. Our proof also extends the decidability result for nilpotent groups by Bodart, Ciobanu, Metcalfe and Shaffrir, and the decidability result for metabelian groups by Dong (STOC'24). Since the Identity Problem and the Group Problem are known to be undecidable in matrix groups containing $F_2 \times F_2$, our result significantly reduces the decidability gap for both decision problems.

Abstract:For a semigroup S (group G) we study relational equations and describe all semigroups S with equationally Noetherian direct powers. It follows that any group G has equationally Noetherian direct powers if we consider G as an algebraic structure of a certain relational language. Abstract:The product of subgroups membership problem for a finitely generated group G is the decision problem, where, given two or more finitely generated subgroups K i , i = 1 , ... , m , of G and a group element g, it is asked whether g ∈ ∏ i = 1 m K i . In this paper, we prove that, for any finitely generated nilpotent group N of class two, the product of two subgroups membership problem is decidable. Note that this problem is equivalent to the problem of determining the non-emptiness of the intersection of two cosets of finitely generated subgroups. We also show that, for a sufficiently large direct power H n of the Heisenberg group H, there exists a product K = ∏ i = 1 4 K i of four finitely generated subgroups for which the membership problem is algorithmically undecidable. The proof of the last assertion is based on the undecidability of Hilbert's 10th problem and interpretation of Diophantine equations in nilpotent groups. The question of decidability of the membership problem for a product of three finitely generated subgroups in a nilpotent group of class two remains open.

Abstract:Recently, the authors gave some conditions under which a direct product of finitely many groups is $\mathcal{V}-$capable if and only if each of its factors is $\mathcal{V}-$capable for some varieties $\mathcal{V}$. In this paper, we extend this fact to any infinite direct product of groups. Moreover, we conclude some results for $\mathcal{V}-$capability of direct products of infinitely many groups in varieties of abelian, nilpotent and polynilpotent groups.

Quadratic equations in the lamplighter group

Abstract:In this paper we study complexity of solving quadratic equations in the lamplighter group. We give a complete classification of cases (depending on genus and other characteristics of a given equation) when the problem is $\mathbf{NP}$-complete or polynomial-time decidable. We notice that the conjugacy problem can be solved in linear time. Finally, we prove that the problem belongs to the class $\mathbf{XP}$.

Submonoid Membership in n-dimensional lamplighter groups and S-unit equations

Abstract:We show that Submonoid Membership is decidable in n-dimensional lamplighter groups $(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}) \wr \mathbb{Z}^n$ for any prime $p$ and integer $n$. More generally, we show decidability of Submonoid Membership in semidirect products of the form $\mathcal{Y} \rtimes \mathbb{Z}^n$, where $\mathcal{Y}$ is any finitely presented module over the Laurent polynomial ring $\mathbb{F}_p[X_1^{\pm}, \ldots, X_n^{\pm}]$. Combined with a result of Shafrir (2024), this gives the first example of a group $G$ and a finite index subgroup $\widetilde{G} \leq G$, such that Submonoid Membership is decidable in $\widetilde{G}$ but undecidable in $G$. To obtain our decidability result, we reduce Submonoid Membership in $\mathcal{Y} \rtimes \mathbb{Z}^n$ to solving S-unit equations over $\mathbb{F}_p[X_1^{\pm}, \ldots, X_n^{\pm}]$-modules. We show that the solution set of such equations is effectively $p$-automatic, extending a result of Adamczewski and Bell (2012). As an intermediate result, we also obtain that the solution set of the Knapsack Problem in $\mathcal{Y} \rtimes \mathbb{Z}^n$ is effectively $p$-automatic.

Abstract:There has been substantial investigation in recent years of subdirect products of limit groups and their finite presentability and homological finiteness properties. To contrast the results obtained for limit groups, Baumslag, Bridson, Holt and Miller investigated subdirect products (fibre products) of finitely presented metabelian groups. They showed that, in contrast to the case for limit groups, such subdirect products could have diverse behaviour with respect to finite presentability. We show that, in a sense that can be made precise, `most' subdirect products of a finite set of finitely presented metabelian groups are again finitely presented. To be a little more precise, we assign to each subdirect product a point of an algebraic variety and show that, in most cases, those points which correspond to non-finitely presented subdirect products form a subvariety of smaller dimension.

Virtual homology of limit groups and profinite rigidity of direct products

Abstract:We show that the virtual second Betti number of a finitely generated, residually free group $G$ is finite if and only if $G$ is either free, free abelian or the fundamental group of a closed surface. We also prove a similar statement in higher dimensions. We then develop techniques involving rank gradients of pro-$p$ groups, which allow us to recognise direct product decompositions. Combining these ideas, we show that direct products of free and surface groups are profinitely rigid among finitely presented, residually free groups, partially resolving a conjecture of Bridson's. Other corollaries that we obtain include a confirmation of Mel'nikov's surface group conjecture in the residually free case, and a description of closed aspherical manifolds of dimension at least $5$ with a residually free fundamental group.

Abstract:In this paper we study obstructions to presentability by products for finitely generated groups. Along the way we develop both the concept of acentral subgroups, and the relations between presentability by products on the one hand, and certain geometric and measure or orbit equivalence invariants of groups on the other. This leads to many new examples of groups not presentable by products, including all groups with infinitely many ends, the (outer) automorphism groups of free groups, Thompson's groups, and even some elementary amenable groups.

Abstract:We study finitely generated pairs of groups H⩽G such that the Schreier graph of H has at least two ends and is narrow. Examples of narrow Schreier graphs include those that are quasi‐isometric to finitely ended trees or have linear growth. Under this hypothesis, we show that H is a virtual fiber subgroup if and only if G contains infinitely many double cosets of H . Along the way, we prove that if a group acts essentially on a finite‐dimensional CAT(0) cube complex with no facing triples, then it virtually surjects onto the integers with kernel commensurable to a hyperplane stabiliser.
