Abstract:Building on an approach introduced by Golovkin in the '60s, we show that nonuniqueness in some forced PDEs is a direct consequence of the existence of a self-similar linearly unstable eigenvalue: the key point is a clever choice of the forcing term removing complicated nonlinear interactions. We use this method to give a short and self-contained proof of nonuniqueness in 2D perfect fluids, first obtained in Vishik's groundbreaking result. In particular, we present a direct construction of a forced self-similar unstable vortex, where we treat perturbatively the self-similar operator in a new and more quantitative way.

Stability of radially symmetric, monotone vorticities of 2D Euler equations

Abstract:We consider the incompressible Euler equations in $R^2$ when the initial vorticity is bounded, radially symmetric and non-increasing in the radial direction. Such a radial distribution is stationary, and we show that the monotonicity produces stability in some weighted norm related to the angular impulse. For instance, it covers the cases of circular vortex patches and Gaussian distributions. Our stability does not depend on $L^\infty$-bound or support size of perturbations. The proof is based on the fact that such a radial monotone distribution minimizes the impulse of functions having the same level set measure.

Abstract:Singularity formation of the 3D incompressible Euler equations is known to be extremely challenging (Majda and Bertozzi in Vorticity and incompressible flow, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, vol 27, 2002; Gibbon in Physica D 237(14):1894–1904, 2008; Kiselev, in: Proceedings of the international congress of mathematicians, vol 3, 2018; Drivas and Elgindi in EMS Surv Math Sci 10(1):1–100, 2023; Constantin in Bull Am Math Soc 44(4):603–621, 2007). In Elgindi (Ann Math 194(3):647–727, 2021) (see also Elgindi et al. in Camb J Math 9(4), 2021), Elgindi proved that the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations with no swirl and initial velocity develops a finite time singularity. Inspired by Elgindi's work, we proved that the 3D axisymmetric Euler and 2D Boussinesq equations with initial velocity and boundary develop a stable asymptotically self-similar (or approximately self-similar) finite time singularity (Chen and Hou in Commun Math Phys 383(3):1559–1667, 2021) in the same setting as the Hou-Luo blowup scenario (Luo and Hou in Proc Natl Acad Sci 111(36):12968–12973, 2014; Luo and Hou in SIAM Multiscale Model Simul 12(4):1722–1776, 2014). On the other hand, the authors of Vasseur and Vishik (Commun Math Phys 378(1):557–568, 2020) and Lafleche et al. (Journal de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées 155:140–154, 2021) recently showed that blowup solutions to the 3D Euler equations are hydrodynamically unstable. The instability results obtained in Vasseur and Vishik (2020) and Lafleche et al. (2021) require some strong regularity assumption on the initial data, which is not satisfied by the velocity field. In this paper, we generalize the analysis of Elgindi (Ann Math 194(3):647–727, 2021), Chen and Hou (Commun Math Phys 383(3):1559–1667, 2021), Vasseur and Vishik (2020) and Lafleche et al. (2021) to show that the blowup solutions of the 3D Euler and 2D Boussinesq equations with velocity are unstable under the notion of stability introduced in Vasseur and Vishik (2020) and Lafleche et al. (2021). These two seemingly contradictory results reflect the difference of the two approaches in studying the stability of 3D Euler blowup solutions.

Abstract:The motion of two contiguous incompressible and viscous fluids is described within the diffuse interface theory by the so-called Model H. The system consists of the Navier-Stokes equations, which are coupled with the Cahn-Hilliard equation associated to the Ginzburg-Landau free energy with physically relevant logarithmic potential. This model is studied in bounded smooth domain in R^d, d=2 and d=3, and is supplemented with a no-slip condition for the velocity, homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions for the order parameter and the chemical potential, and suitable initial conditions. We study uniqueness and regularity of weak and strong solutions. In a two-dimensional domain, we show the uniqueness of weak solutions and the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions originating from an initial velocity u_0 in V, namely u_0 in H_0^1 such that div u_0=0. In addition, we prove further regularity properties and the validity of the instantaneous separation property. In a three-dimensional domain, we show the existence and uniqueness of local strong solutions with initial velocity u_0 in V.

Instability of a viscous flow between rotating porous cylinders with radial flow

Abstract:The stability of a two-dimensional viscous flow between two rotating porous cylinders is studied. The basic steady flow is the most general rotationally-invariant solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in which the velocity has both radial and azimuthal components, and the azimuthal velocity profile depends on the Reynolds number. It is shown that for a wide range of the parameters of the problem, the basic flow is unstable to small two-dimensional perturbations. Neutral curves in the space of parameters of the problem are computed. Calculations show that the stability properties of this flow are determined by the azimuthal velocity at the inner cylinder when the direction of the radial flow is from the inner cylinder to the outer one and by the azimuthal velocity at the outer cylinder when the direction of the radial flow is reversed. This work is a continuation of our previous study of an inviscid instability in flows between rotating porous cylinders (see \cite{IM2013}).

Abstract:We investigate the global in time stability of regular solutions with large velocity vectors to the evolutionary Navier-Stokes equation in ${\bf R}^3$. The class of stable flows contains all two dimensional weak solutions. The only assumption which is required is smallness of the $L_2$-norm of initial perturbation or its derivative with respect to the `$z$'-coordinate in the same norm. The magnitude of the rest of the norm of initial datum is not restricted.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for incompressible viscoelastic fluids in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d=2,3$). By introducing a new decomposition via Helmholtz's projections, we first provide an alternative proof on the existence of global smooth solutions near equilibrium. Then under additional assumptions that the initial data belong to $L^1$ and their Fourier modes do not degenerate at low frequencies, we obtain the optimal $L^2$ decay rates for the global smooth solutions and their spatial derivatives. At last, we establish the weak-strong uniqueness property in the class of finite energy weak solutions for the incompressible viscoelastic system.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of circularly symmetric solutions to the initial boundary valueproblem of the nonisentropic compressibleNavier--Stokes equations in a two-dimensional exterior domain with impermeable boundary conditions when theviscosities and the heat conduction coefficienttend to zero at the same rate. By multiscale analysis, we obtain that away from the boundary the nonisentropiccompressible viscous flow can be approximated by thecorresponding inviscid flow, and near the boundary there are boundary layers for the angular velocity, density,and temperature in the leading order expansions ofsolutions, while the radial velocity and pressure do not have boundary layers in the leading order. The boundarylayers of velocity and temperature are described by a nonlinear parabolic system. We prove the stability ofboundary layers and rigorously justify the asymptotic behavior of solutions in the $L^{\infty}$ space for the smallviscosities and heat-conduction limit in the Lagrangian coordinates, as long as the strength of the boundarylayers is suitably small. Finally, we show that the similar asymptotic behavior of the small viscosities andheat conduction limit holds in the Eulerian coordinates for the compressible nonisentropic viscous flow.
Inhomogenous Navier--Stokes equations with unbounded density

Abstract:In the current state of the art regarding the Navier--Stokes equations, the existence of unique solutions for incompressible flows in two spatial dimensions is already well-established. Recently, these results have been extended to models with variable density, maintaining positive outcomes for merely bounded densities, even in cases with large vacuum regions. However, the study of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with unbounded densities remains incomplete. Addressing this gap is the focus of the present paper. Our main result demonstrates the global existence of a unique solution for flows initiated by unbounded density, whose regularity/integrability is characterized within a specific subset of the Yudovich class of unbounded functions. The core of our proof lies in the application of Desjardins' inequality, combined with a blow-up criterion for ordinary differential equations. Furthermore, we derive time-weighted estimates that guarantee the existence of a $C^1$ velocity field and ensure the equivalence of Eulerian and Lagrangian formulations of the equations. Finally, by leveraging results from \cite{DanMu}, we conclude the uniqueness of the solution.

Stable nearly self-similar blowup of the 2D Boussinesq and 3D Euler equations with smooth data II: Rigorous Numerics

Abstract:This is Part II of our paper in which we prove finite time blowup of the 2D Boussinesq and 3D axisymmetric Euler equations with smooth initial data of finite energy and boundary. In Part I of our paper [ChenHou2023a], we establish an analytic framework to prove stability of an approximate self-similar blowup profile by a combination of a weighted $L^\infty$ norm and a weighted $C^{1/2}$ norm. Under the assumption that the stability constants, which depend on the approximate steady state, satisfy certain inequalities stated in our stability lemma, we prove stable nearly self-similar blowup of the 2D Boussinesq and 3D Euler equations with smooth initial data and boundary. In Part II of our paper, we provide sharp stability estimates of the linearized operator by constructing space-time solutions with rigorous error control. We also obtain sharp estimates of the velocity in the regular case using computer assistance. These results enable us to verify that the stability constants obtained in Part I [ChenHou2023a] indeed satisfy the inequalities in our stability lemma. This completes the analysis of the finite time singularity of the axisymmetric Euler equations with smooth initial data and boundary.

Abstract:Abstract We are interested in the stability analysis of two-dimensional incompressible inviscid fluids. Specifically, we revisit a known recent result on the stability of Yudovich’s solutions to the incompressible Euler equations in $L^{\infty }([0,T];H^{1})$ by providing a new approach to its proof based on the idea of compactness extrapolation and by extending it to the whole plane. This new method of proof is robust and, when applied to viscous models, leads to a remarkable logarithmic improvement on the rate of convergence in the vanishing viscosity limit of two-dimensional fluids. Loosely speaking, this logarithmic gain is the result of the fact that, in appropriate high-regularity settings, the smoothness of solutions to the Euler equations at times $t\in [0,T)$ is strictly higher than their regularity at time $t=T$. This “memory effect” seems to be a general principle that is not exclusive to fluid mechanics. It is therefore likely to be observed in other setting and deserves further investigation. Finally, we also apply the stability results on Euler systems to the study of two-dimensional ideal plasmas and establish their convergence, in strong topologies, to solutions of magnetohydrodynamic systems, when the speed of light tends to infinity. The crux of this asymptotic analysis relies on a fine understanding of Maxwell’s system.

Abstract:The two-phase free boundary problem with surface tension and downforce gravity for the Navier-Stokes system is considered in a situation where the initial interface is close to equilibrium. The boundary symbol of this problem admits zeros in the unstable halfplane in case the heavy fluid is on top of the light one, which leads to the well-known Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Instability is proved rigorously in an $L_p$-setting by means of an abstract instability result due to Henry.

Abstract:We prove the existence of nonradial classical solutions to the 2D incompressible Euler equations with compact support. More precisely, for any positive integer $k$, we construct compactly supported stationary Euler flows of class $C^k(\mathbb{R}^2)$ which are not locally radial. The proof uses a degree-theory-based bifurcation argument which hinges on three key ingredients: a novel approach to stationary Euler flows through elliptic equations with non-autonomous nonlinearities; a set of sharp regularity estimates for the linearized operator, which involves a potential that blows up as the inverse square of the distance to the boundary of the support; and overcoming a serious problem of loss of derivatives by the introduction of anisotropic weighted functional spaces between which the linearized operator is Fredholm.

Abstract:We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier–Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier–Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exist a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier–Stokes system. The convergence holds in a weak topology. However, this limit satisfies some stability estimates measured by the relative entropy with respect to an entropy shock. In particular, our result provides the uniqueness of entropy shocks to the shallow water equation in a class of inviscid limits of solutions to the viscous shallow water equations.

Abstract: We prove the asymptotic stability of shear flows close to the Couette flow for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, if the initial velocity is close to the Couette flow and the initial density is close to a positive constant in the Gevrey class 2, then 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations are globally well-posed and the velocity converges strongly to a shear flow close to the Couette flow, and the vorticity will be driven to small scales by a linear evolution and weakly converges as $t\to \infty$. To our knowledge, this is the first global well-posedness result for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the stability of two-dimensional steady Euler flows with sharply concentrated vorticity in a bounded domain. These flows are obtained as maximizers of the kinetic energy on some isovortical surface, under the constraint that the vorticity is compactly supported in a finite number of disjoint regions of small diameter. We prove the nonlinear stability of these flows when the vorticity is sufficiently concentrated in one small region, or in two small regions with opposite signs. The proof is achieved by showing that these flows constitute a compact and isolated set of local maximizers of the kinetic energy on the isovortical surface. The separation property of the stream function plays a crucial role in validating isolatedness.

Homogenization of the 2D Euler system: lakes and porous media

Abstract:This work is devoted to the long-standing open problem of homogenization of 2D perfect incompressible fluid flows, such as the 2D Euler equations with impermeable inclusions modeling a porous medium, and such as the lake equations. The main difficulty is the homogenization of the transport equation for the associated fluid vorticity. In particular, a localization phenomenon for the vorticity could in principle occur, which would rule out the separation of scales. Our approach combines classical results from different fields to prevent such phenomena and to prove homogenization towards variants of the Euler and lake equations: we rely in particular on the homogenization theory for elliptic equations with stiff inclusions, on criteria for unique ergodicity of dynamical systems, and on complex analysis in form of extensions of the Radó-Kneser-Choquet theorem.

Abstract:We are concerned with entropy solutions of the 2×2 relativistic Euler equations for perfect fluids in special relativity. We establish the uniqueness of Riemann solutions in the class of entropy solutions in L∞∩BVloc with arbitrarily large oscillation. Our proof for solutions with large oscillation is based on a detailed analysis of global behavior of shock curves in the phase space and on special features of centered rarefaction waves in the physical plane for this system. The uniqueness result does not require specific reference to any particular method for constructing the entropy solutions. Then the uniqueness of Riemann solutions yields their inviscid large-time stability under arbitrarily large L1∩L∞∩BVloc perturbation of the Riemann initial data, as long as the corresponding solutions are in L∞ and have local bounded total variation that allows the linear growth in time. We also extend our approach to deal with the uniqueness and stability of Riemann solutions containing vacuum in the class of entropy solutions in L∞ with arbitrarily large oscillation.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the global well-posedness of the solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes/Allen-Cahn system and its sharp interface limit in one-dimensional space. For the perturbations with small energy but possibly large oscillations of rarefaction wave solutions near phase separation, and where the strength of the initial phase field could be arbitrarily large, we prove that the solution of the Cauchy problem exists for all time, and converges to the centered rarefaction wave solution of the corresponding standard two-phase Euler equation as the viscosity and the thickness of the interface tend to zero. The proof is mainly based on a scaling argument and a basic energy method.
