Abstract:Due to Klein tunneling in graphene only quasi-bound states are realized in graphene quantum dots by electrostatic gating. Particles in the quasi-bound states are trapped inside the dot for a finite time and they keep bouncing back and forth till they find their way out. Here we study the effect of an induced gap on the scattering problem of Dirac electrons on a circular electrostatically confined quantum dot. Introducing an energy gap inside the quantum dot enables us to distinguish three scattering regimes instead of two in the case of gapless graphene quantum dot. We will focus on these regimes and analyze the scattering efficiency as a function of the electron energy, the dot radius and the energy gap. Moreover, we will discuss how the system parameters can affect the scattering resonances inside the dot.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in graphene quantum dots, due to the Klein tunneling effect, only quasi - bound states can be achieved. Particles in such quasi - bound states will be temporarily trapped inside the quantum dots and keep bouncing back and forth until they find a way out. This paper studies the influence of introducing an energy gap on the Dirac electron scattering problem in circular electrostatically - confined graphene quantum dots. By introducing an energy gap, three scattering regions can be distinguished, instead of two in gapless graphene quantum dots. The author focuses on analyzing these three scattering regions and explores the influence of electron energy, quantum dot radius and energy gap on scattering efficiency, as well as how system parameters affect scattering resonances inside the quantum dots. Specifically, the main objectives of this paper include: 1. **Study the electron scattering characteristics in graphene quantum dots with an energy gap**: By introducing an energy gap, study its influence on the scattering process. 2. **Identify different scattering regions**: According to the radius, potential energy and energy gap of the quantum dots, identify and analyze different scattering regions. 3. **Calculate the scattering coefficients and far - field radial components**: Calculate the scattering coefficients through the continuity conditions of the wave function and study the scattering efficiency. 4. **Discuss the influence of system parameters on scattering resonances**: Analyze the influence of factors such as quantum dot radius, incident electron energy, potential energy height and energy gap size on the scattering phenomenon. Through these studies, the author hopes to gain a deep understanding of the electron transport behavior in graphene quantum dots with an energy gap and provide theoretical support for possible future technological applications.
