Abstract:We extend a functional limit theorem for symmetric $U$-statistics [Miller and Sen, 1972] to asymmetric $U$-statistics, and use this to show some renewal theory results for asymmetric $U$-statistics. Some applications are given.

Abstract:We consider $U$-statistics on row-column exchangeable matrices. We derive a decomposition for them, based on orthogonal projections on probability spaces generated by sets of Aldous-Hoover-Kallenberg variables. The specificity of these sets is that they are indexed by bipartite graphs, which allows for the use of concepts from graph theory to describe this decomposition. The decomposition is used to investigate the asymptotic behavior of $U$-statistics of row-column exchangeable matrices, including in degenerate cases. In particular, it depends only on a few terms of the decomposition, corresponding to the non-zero elements that are indexed by the smallest graphs, named principal support graphs, after an analogous concept suggested by Janson and Nowicki (1991). Hence, we show that the asymptotic behavior of a $U$-statistic and its degeneracy are characterized by the properties of its principal support graphs. Indeed, their number of nodes gives the convergence rate of a $U$-statistic to its limit distribution. Specifically, the latter is degenerate if and only if this number is strictly greater than 1. Finally, when the principal support graphs are connected, we find that the limit distribution is Gaussian, even in degenerate cases.

Abstract:The renewal process is a key statistical model for describing a wide range of stochastic systems in Physics. This work investigates the behavior of the probability distribution of the number of renewals in renewal processes in the short-time limit, with a focus on cases where the number of renewals is large. We find that the specific details of the sojourn time distribution $\phi(\tau)$ in this limit can significantly modify the behavior in the large-number-of-renewals regime. We explore both non-equilibrium and equilibrium renewal processes, deriving results for various forms of $\phi(\tau)$. Using saddle point approximations, we analyze cases where $\phi(\tau)$ follows a power-series expansion, includes a cutoff, or exhibits non-analytic behavior near $\tau = 0$. Additionally, we show how the short-time properties of $\phi(\tau)$ shape the decay of the number of renewals in equilibrium compared to non-equilibrium renewal processes. The probability of the number of renewals plays a crucial role in determining rare event behaviors, such as Laplace tails. The results obtained here are expected to help advance the development of a theoretical framework for rare events in transport processes in complex systems.

Abstract:In this paper, the objective is to provide sequences of improved non-increasing (non-decreasing) upper (lower) bounds for the solution of (defective) renewal equations in terms of the right-tail probability of a compound geometric distribution. Exponential (Lundberg type) and non-exponential type bounds are also derived. Also, under several reliability classifications, some new as well as improvements of well-known bounds are given. The results are then applied to obtain refinements of the bounds for several ruin related quantities, (such as the deficit at ruin, the joint distribution of the surplus prior to and at ruin, the mean deficit at ruin and the stop-loss premium, and the compound geometric densities). Bounds for the renewal function are also given.

Asymptotics for non-degenerate multivariate $U$-statistics with estimated nuisance parameters under the null and local alternative hypotheses

Abstract:The large-sample behavior of non-degenerate multivariate $U$-statistics of arbitrary degree is investigated under the assumption that their kernel depends on parameters that can be estimated consistently. Mild regularity conditions are given which guarantee that once properly normalized, such statistics are asymptotically multivariate Gaussian both under the null hypothesis and sequences of local alternatives. The work of Randles (1982, \emph{Ann. Statist.}) is extended in three ways: the data and the kernel values can be multivariate rather than univariate, the limiting behavior under local alternatives is studied for the first time, and the effect of knowing some of the nuisance parameters is quantified. These results can be applied to a broad range of goodness-of-fit testing contexts, as shown in two specific examples.

Abstract:In this paper, our objective is to derive two-sided bounds for the renewal function even if the interarrival times have no finite moment. By proving a relationship between the renewal function and a suitable 'truncated' compound geometric distribution, under a truncated generalized Lundberg condition for proper renewal equations, we derive upper and lower bounds for this truncated compound geometric distribution. Using this relationship, we obtain bounds for the renewal function. Under specific truncated generalized Lundberg conditions, we obtain two-sided exponential-type bounds and Pareto-type lower bounds for the renewal function. Also, by proving a relationship between the excess lifetime of a renewal process and the df of a suitable 'truncated deficit at ruin' of a renewal risk (or Sparre Andersen) model, we obtain two-sided exponential bounds for the df of the excess lifetime.

Abstract:Renewal processes with heavy-tailed power law distributed sojourn times are commonly encountered in physical modelling and so typical fluctuations of observables of interest have been investigated in detail. To describe rare events the rate function approach from large deviation theory does not hold and new tools must be considered. Here we investigate the large deviations of the number of renewals, the forward and backward recurrence time, the occupation time, and the time interval straddling the observation time. We show how non-normalized densities describe these rare fluctuations, and how moments of certain observables are obtained from these limiting laws. Numerical simulations illustrate our results showing the deviations from arcsine, Dynkin, Darling-Kac, L{é}vy and Lamperti laws.

Abstract:We suggest to construct infinite stochastic binary sequences by associating one of the two symbols of the sequence with the renewal times of an underlying renewal process. Focusing on stationary binary sequences corresponding to delayed renewal processes, we investigate correlations and the ability of the model to implement a prescribed autocovariance structure, showing that a large variety of subexponential decay of correlations can be accounted for. In particular, robustness and efficiency of the method are tested by generating binary sequences with polynomial and stretched-exponential decay of correlations. Moreover, to justify the maximum entropy principle for model selection, an asymptotic equipartition property for typical sequences that naturally leads to the Shannon entropy of the waiting time distribution is demonstrated. To support the comparison of the theory with data, a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem are established for the time average of general observables.

Abstract:We study distributions $F$ on $[0,\infty)$ such that for some $T\le\infty$, $F^{*2}(x,x+T]\sim 2 F(x,x+T]$. The case $T=\infty$ corresponds to $F$ being subexponential, and our analysis shows that the properties for $T<\infty$ are, in fact, very similar to this classical case. A parallel theory is developed in the presence of densities. Applications are given to random walks, the key renewal theorem, compound Poisson process and Bellman-Harris branching processes.

Abstract:The renewal process is a point process where an interevent time between successive renewals is an independent and identically distributed random variable. Alternating renewal process is a dichotomous process and a slight generalization of the renewal process, where the interevent time distribution alternates between two distributions. We investigate statistical properties of the number of renewals and occupation times for one of the two states in alternating renewal processes. When both means of the interevent times are finite, the alternating renewal process can reach an equilibrium. On the other hand, an alternating renewal process shows aging when one of the means diverges. We provide analytical calculations for the moments of the number of renewals, occupation time statistics, and the correlation function for several case studies in the interevent-time distributions. We show anomalous fluctuations for the number of renewals and occupation times when the second moment of interevent time diverges. When the mean interevent time diverges, distributional limit theorems for the number of events and occupation times are shown analytically. These are known as the Mittag-Leffler distribution and the generalized arcsine law in probability theory.

Abstract:In his work published in (Ann. Probab. 19, No. 2 (1991), 812–825), W. Stute introduced the notion of conditional U-statistics, expanding upon the Nadaraya–Watson estimates used for regression functions. Stute illustrated the pointwise consistency and asymptotic normality of these statistics. Our research extends these concepts to a broader scope, establishing, for the first time, an asymptotic framework for single-index conditional U-statistics applicable to locally stationary random fields {Xs,An:sinRn} observed at irregularly spaced locations in Rn, a subset of Rd. We introduce an estimator for the single-index conditional U-statistics operator that accommodates the nonstationary nature of the data-generating process. Our method employs a stochastic sampling approach that allows for the flexible creation of irregularly spaced sampling sites, covering both pure and mixed increasing domain frameworks. We establish the uniform convergence rate and weak convergence of the single conditional U-processes. Specifically, we examine weak convergence under bounded or unbounded function classes that satisfy specific moment conditions. These findings are established under general structural conditions on the function classes and underlying models. The theoretical advancements outlined in this paper form essential foundations for potential breakthroughs in functional data analysis, laying the groundwork for future research in this field. Moreover, in the same context, we show the uniform consistency for the nonparametric inverse probability of censoring weighted (I.P.C.W.) estimators of the regression function under random censorship, which is of its own interest. Potential applications of our findings encompass, among many others, the set-indexed conditional U-statistics, the Kendall rank correlation coefficient, and the discrimination problems.

Abstract:We give a generalization of the ergodic theorem for semi-Markov linear-type processes. This generalization is proved for the case when a common support of distributions defining this process is not arithmetic. Also we give an uniform estimate of expectations of the forward renewal time. These facts are based on the key renewal (Walter Smith's) theorem, and they are very useful in research in the queueing theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider U-statistics whose data is a strictly stationary sequence which can be expressed as a functional of an i.i.d. one. We establish a strong law of large numbers, a bounded law of the iterated logarithms and a central limit theorem under a dependence condition. The main ingredients for the proof are an approximation by U-statistics whose data is a functional of $\ell$ i.i.d. random variables and an analogue of the Hoeffding's decomposition for U-statistics of this type.

Abstract:We study a renewal problem within a periodic environment, departing from the classical renewal theory by relaxing the assumption of independent and identically distributed inter-arrival times. Instead, the conditional distribution of the next arrival time, given the current one, is governed by a periodic kernel, denoted as $H$. The periodicity property of $H$ is expressed as $\mathbb{P}(T_{k+1} > t ~ |~ T_k) = H(t, T_k)$, where $H(t+T,s+T) = H(t, s)$. For a fixed time $t$, we define $N_t$ as the count of events occurring up to time $t$. The focus is on two temporal aspects: $Y_t$, the time elapsed since the last event, and $X_t$, the time until the next event occurs, given by $Y_t = t - T_{N_t}$ and $X_t = T_{N_{t}+1} - t$. The study explores the long-term behavior of the distributions of $X_t$ and $Y_t$.
