Abstract:We study collections of subrings of $H^*(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ that are closed under the tautological operations that map cohomology classes on moduli spaces of smaller dimension to those on moduli spaces of larger dimension and contain the tautological subrings. Such extensions of tautological rings are well-suited for inductive arguments and flexible enough for a wide range of applications. In particular, we confirm predictions of Chenevier and Lannes for the $\ell$-adic Galois representations and Hodge structures that appear in $H^k(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ for $k = 13$, $14$, and $15$. We also show that $H^4(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ is generated by tautological classes for all $g$ and $n$, confirming a prediction of Arbarello and Cornalba from the 1990s. In order to establish the final bases cases needed for the inductive proofs of our main results, we use Mukai's construction of canonically embedded pentagonal curves of genus 7 as linear sections of an orthogonal Grassmannian and a decomposition of the diagonal to show that the pure weight cohomology of $\mathcal{M}_{7,n}$ is generated by algebraic cycle classes, for $n \leq 3$.

Abstract:Given a unital partial action $\alpha $ of a group $G$ on a commutative ring $R$ we denote by $ {\bf PicS} _{R^{\alpha}}(R) $ the Picard monoid of the isomorphism classes of partially invertible $R$-bimodules, which are central over the subring $R^{\alpha} \subseteq R$ of $\alpha$-invariant elements, and consider a specific unital partial representation $\Theta : G \to {\bf PicS} _{R^{\alpha}}(R), $ along with the abelian group $\mathcal {C}(\Theta/R)$ of the isomorphism classes of partial generalized crossed products related to $\Theta,$ which already showed their importance in obtaining a partial action analogue of the Chase-Harrison-Rosenberg seven-term exact sequence. We give a description of $\mathcal {C}(\Theta/R)$ in terms partial generalized products of the form $\mathcal D(f \Theta)$ where $f$ is partial $1$-cocycle of $G$ with values in a submonoid of $ {\bf PicS}_{R^{\alpha}}(R).$ Assuming that $G$ is finite and that $R^{\alpha} \subseteq R$ is a partial Galois extension, we prove that any Azumaya $R^\alpha$-algebra, containing $R$ as a maximal commutative subalgebra, is isomorphic to a partial generalized crossed product. Furthermore, we show that the relative Brauer group $\mathcal B(R/R^\alpha)$ can be seen as a quotient of $\mathcal {C}(\Theta/R)$ by a subgroup isomorphic to the Picard group of $R.$ Finally, we prove that the analogue of the Chase-Harrison-Rosenberg sequence, obtained earlier for partial Galois extensions of commutative rings, can be derived from a recent seven-term exact sequence established in a non-commutative setting.

Abstract:We prove the finiteness and compatibility with base change of the (phi,Gamma)-cohomology and the Iwasawa cohomology of arithmetic families of (phi,Gamma)-modules. Using this finiteness theorem, we show that a family of Galois representations that is densely pointwise refined in the sense of Mazur is actually trianguline as a family over a large subspace. In the case of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve, we determine the behavior at all points.
Cohomology rings of extended powers and free infinite loop spaces

Abstract:We calculate mod-p cohomology of extended powers, and their group completions which are free infinite loop spaces. We consider the cohomology of all extended powers of a space together and identify a Hopf ring structure with divided powers within which cup product structure is more readily computable than on its own. We build on our previous calculations of cohomology of symmetric groups, which are the cohomology of extended powers of a point, the well-known calculation of homology, and new results on cohomology of symmetric groups with coefficients in the sign representation. We then use this framework to understand cohomology rings of related spaces such as infinite extended powers and free infinite loop spaces. v2 typo in gradings of Theorem 2.35 corrected.

Cohomology rings of the moduli of one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study on the cohomology rings of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{d,\chi}$ of semistable one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane. We introduce a set of tautological relations of geometric origin, including Mumford-type relations, and prove that their ideal is generated by certain primitive relations via the Virasoro operators. Using BPS integrality and the computational efficiency of Virasoro operators, we show that our geometric relations completely determine the cohomology rings of the moduli stacks up to degree 5. As an application, we verify the refined Gopakumar--Vafa/Pandharipande--Thomas correspondence for local $\mathbb{P}^2$ in degree 5. Furthermore, we propose a substantially strengthened version of the $P=C$ conjecture, originally introduced by Shen and two of the authors. This can be viewed as an analogue of the $P=W$ conjecture in a compact and Fano setting.

Cohomological Kernels for Cyclic by Cyclic Semi-Direct Product Extensions

Abstract:Let $F$ be a field and $E$ an extension of $F$ with $[E:F]=d$ where the characteristic of $F$ is zero or prime to $d$. We assume $\mu_{d^2}\subset F$ where $\mu_{d^2}$ are the $d^2$th roots of unity. This paper studies the problem of determining the cohomological kernel $H^n(E/F):=\ker(H^n(F,\mu_d) \rightarrow H^n(E,\mu_d))$ (Galois cohomology with coefficients in the $d$th roots of unity) when the Galois closure of $E$ is a semi-direct product of cyclic groups. The main result is a six-term exact sequence determining the kernel as the middle map and is based on tools of Positelski. When $n=2$ this kernel is the relative Brauer group ${\rm Br}(E/F)$, the classes of central simple algebras in the Brauer group of $F$ split in the field $E$. The work of Aravire and Jacob which calculated the groups $H^n_{p^m}(E/F)$ in the case of semidirect products of cyclic groups in characteristic $p$, provides motivation for this work.

Abstract:In Remarks on Galois Cohomology and Definability [2], Pillay introduced definable Galois cohomology, a model-theoretic generalization of Galois cohomology. Let $M$ be an atomic and strongly $\omega$-homogeneous structure over a set of parameters $A$. Let $B$ be a normal extension of $A$ in $M$. We show that a short exact sequence of automorphism groups $1 \to \text{Aut}(M/B) \to \text{Aut}(M/A) \to \text{Aut}(B/A) \to 1$ induces a short exact sequence in definable Galois cohomology. We also discuss compatibilities with [3]. Our result complements the long exact sequence in definable Galois cohomology developed in More on Galois cohomology, definability and differential algebraic groups [4].

Abstract:A field $K$ is $d$-local if there exist fields $K=k_d,\dots,k_0$ with $k_{i+1}$ completely discretely valued with residue field $k_i$, and $k_0$ quasi-finite. We prove a duality theorem for the Galois cohomology of such $K$ with many coefficients, including finite coefficients of any order. Previously, such duality was only known in few cases : as a perfect pairing of finite groups for finite coefficients prime to $\mathrm{char} k_0$ in general, or for any finite coefficients when $k_1$ is $p$-adic ; or as a perfect pairing of locally compact Hausdorff groups for the $\mathrm{fppf}$ cohomology of finite group schemes when $K$ is local. With no obvious reasonable topology available, we abandon perfectness altogether and instead obtain nondegenerate pairings of abstract abelian groups. This is done with new diagram-chasing results for pairings of torsion groups, allowing an approach by dévissage which breaks our results down to the study of pairings $K^M_r(K)/p\times H^{d+1-r}_p(K)\to\mathbb Z/p$ using results of Kato.

Abstract:We show that the modular symbol $(0,\infty)$, considered as an element of the dual of Emerton's completed cohomology, interpolates Kato's Euler system at classical points, and we deduce from this a factorisation of Beilinson-Kato's system as a product of two symbols $(0,\infty)$ (an algebraic analog of Rankin's method). The proof uses the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for ${\mathbf GL}_2({\mathbf Q}_p)$ and Emerton's factorization of the completed cohomology of the tower of modular curves for which we provide a new proof resting upon the construction of a Kirillov model for the completed cohomology, and which we refine by imposing conditions at classical points; the existence of such a refinement is a manifestation of an analyticity property for $p$-adic periods of modular forms.

Abstract:We investigate the rational cohomology of the quotient of (generalized) braid groups by the commutator subgroup of the pure braid groups. We provide a combinatorial description of it using isomorphism classes of certain families of graphs. We establish Poincaré dualities for them and prove a stabilization property for the infinite series of reflection groups.

Abstract:We use constructions of versal cohomology classes based on a new notion of ‘presentable functors’, to describe a relationship between the problems of bounding symbol length in cohomology and of finding the minimal degree of a splitting field. Abstract:The aim of this article is to consider the spectral sequences induced by tensor-hom adjunction, and provide a number of new results. Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring of dimension $d$. In the 1st part, it is proved that $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if it admits a nonzero CM (Cohen-Macaulay) module $M$ of finite Gorenstein dimension $g$ such that ${\rm type}(M) \le \mu( {\rm Ext}_R^g(M,R) )$ (e.g., ${\rm type}(M)=1$). This considerably strengthens a result of Takahashi. Moreover, we show that if there is a nonzero $R$-module $M$ of depth $\ge d - 1$ such that the injective dimensions of $M$, ${\rm Hom}_R(M,M)$ and ${\rm Ext}_R^1(M,M)$ are finite, then $M$ has finite projective dimension and $R$ is Gorenstein. In the 2nd part, we assume that $R$ is CM with a canonical module $\omega$. For CM $R$-modules $M$ and $N$, we show that the vanishing of one of the following implies the same for others: ${\rm Ext}_R^{\gg 0}(M,N^{+})$, ${\rm Ext}_R^{\gg 0}(N,M^{+})$ and ${\rm Tor}_{\gg 0}^R(M,N)$, where $M^{+}$ denotes ${\rm Ext}_R^{d-\dim(M)}(M,\omega)$. This strengthens a result of Huneke and Jorgensen. Furthermore, we prove a similar result for Tate cohomologies under the additional condition that $R$ is Gorenstein.

A cohomological Hasse principle over two-dimensional local rings

Abstract:Let $K$ be the fraction field of a two-dimensional henselian, excellent, equi-characteristic local domain. We prove a local-global principle for Galois cohomology with finite coefficients over $K$. We use classical machinery from étale cohomology theory, drawing upon an idea in Saito's work on two-dimensional local class field theory. This approach works equally well over the function field of a curve over an equi-characteristic henselian discrete valuation field, thereby giving a different proof of (a slightly generalized version of) a recent result of Harbater, Hartmann and Krashen. We also present two applications. One is the Hasse principle for torsors under quasi-split semisimple simply connected groups without $E_8$ factor. The other gives an explicit upper bound for the Pythagoras number of a Laurent series field in three variables. This bound is sharper than earlier estimates.

Higher Specht bases and $q$-series for the cohomology rings of certain Hessenberg varieties

Abstract:It is conjectured (following the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture) that the cohomology rings of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties yield permutation representations, but the decompositions of the modules are only known in some cases. For the Hessenberg function $h=(h(1),n,\ldots,n)$, the structure of the cohomology ring was determined by Abe, Horiguchi, and Masuda in 2017. We define two new bases for this cohomology ring, one of which is a higher Specht basis, and the other of which is a permutation basis. We also examine the transpose Hessenberg variety, indexed by the Hessenberg function $h' = ((n-1)^{n-m},n^m)$, and show that analogous results hold. Further, we give combinatorial bijections between the monomials in the new basis and sets of $P$-tableaux, motivated by the work of Gasharov, illustrating the connections between the $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action on these cohomology rings and the Schur expansion of chromatic symmetric functions.

Abstract:These are notes of my lecture courses given in the summer of 2024 in the School on Number Theory and Physics at ICTP in Trieste and in the 27th Brazilian Algebra Meeting at IME-USP in São Paulo. We give an elementary account of $p$-adic methods in de Rham cohomology of algebraic hypersurfaces with explicit examples and applications in number theory and combinatorics. These lectures are based on the series of our joint papers with Frits Beukers entitled \emph{Dwork crystals} (\cite{DCI,DCII,DCIII}). These methods also have applications in mathematical physics and arithmetic geometry (\cite{IN,Cartier0}), which we overview here towards the end. I am grateful to the organisers of both schools and to the participants of my courses whose questions stimulated writing these notes.

Abstract:Colmez, Dospinescu and Niziol have shown that the only $p$-adic representations of $\rm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_p/\mathbb{Q}_p)$ appearing in the $p$-adic étale cohomology of the coverings of Drinfeld's half-plane are the $2$-dimensional cuspidal representations (i.e. potentially semi-stable, whose associated Weil-Deligne representation is irreducible) with Hodge-Tate weights $0$ and $1$ and their multiplicities are given by the $p$-adic Langlands correspondence. We generalise this result to arbitrary weights, by considering the $p$-adic étale cohomology with coefficients in the symmetric powers of the universal local system on Drinfeld's tower. A novelty is the appearance of potentially semistable $2$-dimensional non-cristabelian representations, with expected multiplicity. The key point is that the local systems we consider turn out to be particularly simple: they are "isotrivial opers" on a curve. We develop a recipe to compute the proétale cohomology of such a local system using the Hyodo-Kato cohomology of the curve and the de Rham complex of the flat filtered bundle associated to the local system.
