Abstract:For many measure preserving dynamical systems $(\Omega,T,m)$ the successive hitting times to a small set is well approximated by a Poisson process on the real line. In this work we define a new process obtained from recording not only the successive times $n$ of visits to a set $A$, but also the position $T^n(x)$ in $A$ of the orbit, in the limit where $m(A)\to0$. We obtain a convergence of this process, suitably normalized, to a Poisson point process in time and space under some decorrelation condition. We present several new applications to hyperbolic maps and SRB measures, including the case of a neighborhood of a periodic point, and some billiards such as Sinai billiards, Bunimovich stadium and diamond billiard.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve The paper "SPATIO - TEMPORAL POISSON PROCESSES FOR VISITS TO SMALL SETS" aims to study the spatio - temporal Poisson processes of orbits entering small sets in dynamical systems. Specifically, the author attempts to solve the following problems: 1. **Definition and convergence of spatio - temporal Poisson processes**: - Define a new spatio - temporal Poisson process that records not only the time when the orbit enters the small set but also the position at the time of entry. - Study the convergence properties of this process after appropriate normalization when the measure of the small set approaches zero. 2. **Convergence under general conditions**: - Give sufficient conditions for the spatio - temporal point process \( N_\epsilon \) to converge to the Poisson point process \( P \) with intensity \( \lambda\times m \) under general conditions. - These conditions include the one - step decorrelation assumption and the vague convergence of measures. 3. **Applications**: - Apply the above - mentioned theories to specific dynamical systems, such as hyperbolic maps, SRB measures, and various billiard models (for example, Sinai billiard, Bunimovich stadium billiard, and diamond - shaped billiard). - Pay special attention to the return - time distributions in small neighborhoods near periodic points. ### Main results - **Theorem 2.1**: Under certain decorrelation conditions and measure convergence conditions, the spatio - temporal point process \( N_\epsilon \) strongly converges to the Poisson point process \( P \) with intensity \( \lambda\times m \). - **Theorem 2.3**: Generalize the results in discrete time to dynamical systems in continuous time, especially special flows. - **Theorem 3.5**: In the Gibbs - Markov - Young tower framework, give the convergence results of the spatio - temporal Poisson process of return times in small neighborhoods. - **Theorem 4.1 and 4.3**: Study the return - time distributions in small neighborhoods in Bunimovich billiard and Sinai billiard respectively, and prove that these processes converge to Poisson point processes. ### Application examples - **Bunimovich stadium billiard**: For almost all initial points \( x_0 \), the point process \( \sum_{n\geq1:d(T^n(x), x_0)<\epsilon}\delta\left(\frac{n}{\epsilon^2h(x_0)}, \frac{T^n(x)-x_0}{\epsilon}\right) \) converges to the Poisson point process with intensity \( \lambda\times\lambda_2 \). - **Sinai billiard**: Similarly, for almost all initial points \( x_0 \), the point process \( \sum_{n\geq1:T^n(x)\in B_{\partial Q}(q_0,\epsilon)\times S^1}\delta\left(\frac{2n\epsilon}{|\partial Q|}, \frac{r - r_0}{\epsilon}, \phi\right) \) converges to the Poisson point process with intensity \( \lambda\times m_0 \), where \( m_0 \) is a probability measure with density \( \frac{\cos(\phi)}{4} \). ### Conclusion By introducing a new spatio - temporal Poisson process, this paper extends the research on traditional time - Poisson processes and provides new tools and methods for understanding rare events and return - time distributions in dynamical systems. These results have been widely applied in hyperbolic dynamical systems and billiard models.
