Abstract:We define notions of regularity and (Barr-)exactness for 2-categories. In fact, we define three notions of regularity and exactness, each based on one of the three canonical ways of factorising a functor in Cat: as (surjective on objects, injective on objects and fully faithful), as (bijective on objects, fully faithful), and as (bijective on objects and full, faithful). The correctness of our notions is justified using the theory of lex colimits introduced by Lack and the second author. Along the way, we develop an abstract theory of regularity and exactness relative to a kernel--quotient factorisation, extending earlier work of Street and others.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a second-countable, locally compact group. In this article we study amenable $G$-actions on Kirchberg algebras that admit an approximately central embedding of a canonical quasi-free action on the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_\infty$. If $G$ is discrete, this coincides with the class of amenable and outer $G$-actions on Kirchberg algebras. We show that the resulting $G$-C*-dynamical systems are classified by equivariant Kasparov theory up to cocycle conjugacy. This is the first classification theory of its kind applicable to actions of arbitrary locally compact groups. Among various applications, our main result solves a conjecture of Izumi for actions of discrete amenable torsion-free groups, and recovers the main results of recent work by Izumi-Matui for actions of poly-$\mathbb{Z}$ groups.

Abstract:This study aims to introduce the notions of injectivity, local reflexivity, exactness, and nuclearity in the system ( ( Γ_2^c( · , ·),γ_2^c( ·)) ). We find that every dual operator space is injective in the system ( ( Γ_2^c( · , ·),γ_2^c( ·)) ) and nuclearity is equivalent to exactness in this system. As a corollary, we prove that Kirchberg’s conjecture on the equivalence of exactness and local reflexivity for C * -algebras is false in this system, i.e., there exists a C *-algebra A that is locally reflexive in this system but is not exact in this system.
Reductive quotients of klt singularities

Abstract:We prove that the quotient of a klt type singularity by a reductive group is of klt type. In particular, given a klt variety $X$ endowed with the action of a reductive group $G$ and admitting a quasi-projective good quotient $X\rightarrow X/\!/G$, we can find a boundary $B$ on $X/\!/G$ so that the pair $(X/\!/G,B)$ is klt. This applies for example to GIT-quotients of klt varieties. Our main result has consequences for complex spaces obtained as quotients of Hamiltonian Kähler $G$-manifolds, for collapsings of homogeneous vector bundles as introduced by Kempf, and for good moduli spaces of smooth Artin stacks. In particular, it implies that the good moduli space parametrizing $n$-dimensional K-polystable Fano manifolds of volume $v$ has klt type singularities. As a corresponding result regarding global geometry, we show that quotients of Mori Dream Spaces with klt Cox rings are Mori Dream Spaces with klt Cox ring. This in turn applies to show that projective GIT-quotients of varieties of Fano type are of Fano type; in particular, projective moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations are of Fano type.

Abstract:We extend a theorem of Haagerup and Kraus in the C*-algebra context: for a locally compact group with the approximation property (AP), the reduced C*-crossed product construction preserves the strong operator approximation property (SOAP). In particular their reduced group C*-algebras have the SOAP. Our method also solves another open problem: the AP implies exactness for general locally compact groups.

Abstract:It is shown that a Stallings--Swan theorem holds in a totally disconnected locally compact (= t.d.l.c.) context (cf. Thm. B). More precisely, a compactly generated $\mathcal{CO}$-bounded t.d.l.c. group $G$ of rational discrete cohomological dimension less than or equal to $1$ must be isomorphic to the fundamental group of a finite graph of profinite groups. This result generalises Dunwoody's rational version of the classical Stallings--Swan theorem to t.d.l.c. groups. The proof of Theorem B is based on the fact that a compactly generated unimodular t.d.l.c. group with rational discrete cohomological dimension $1$ has necessarily non-positive Euler--Poincaré characteristic (cf. Thm. G).

Abstract:This is the first of two papers dedicated to the computation of the reduced C*-algebra of a connected, linear, real reductive group up to Morita equivalence, and the verification of the Connes-Kasparov conjecture for these groups. These results were originally announced by Antony Wassermann in 1987. In Part I we shall give details of the C*-algebraic Morita equivalence, and then compute the Connes-Kasparov morphism subject to some results in tempered representation theory that we shall prove in Part II using tools from David Vogan's classification of the tempered dual.

Abstract:This paper examines and strengthens the Cuntz-Thomsen picture of equivariant Kasparov theory for arbitrary second-countable locally compact groups, in which elements are given by certain pairs of cocycle representations between C*-dynamical systems. The main result is a stable uniqueness theorem that generalizes a fundamental characterization of ordinary $KK$-theory by Lin and Dadarlat-Eilers. Along the way, we prove an equivariant Cuntz-Thomsen picture analog of the fact that the equivalence relation of homotopy agrees with the (a priori stronger) equivalence relation of stable operator homotopy. The results proved in this paper will be employed as the technical centerpiece in forthcoming work of the authors to classify certain amenable group actions on Kirchberg algebras by equivariant Kasparov theory.

Relative Cubulation of Small Cancellation Free Products

Abstract:We expand the class of groups with relatively geometric actions on CAT(0) cube complexes by proving that it is closed under $C'(\frac16)$--small cancellation free products. We build upon a result of Martin and Steenbock who prove an analogous result in the more specialized setting of groups acting properly and cocompactly on CAT(0) cube complexes. Our methods make use of the same blown-up complex of groups to construct a candidate collection of walls. However, rather than arguing geometrically, we show relative cubulation by appealing to a boundary separation criterion and proving that wall stabilizers form a sufficiently rich family of full relatively quasiconvex codimension-one subgroups. The additional flexibility of relatively geometric actions has surprising new applications. In particular, we prove that $C'(\frac16)$--small cancellation free products of residually finite groups are residually finite.

We also show the following homotopy rigidity result, which may be understood as a precursor to a general Kirchberg–Phillips-type classification theory: If two outer actions of an amenable group on a unital Kirchberg algebra are equivariantly homotopy equivalent, then they are conjugate. This marks the first C*-dynamical classification result up to cocycle conjugacy that is applicable to actions of all amenable groups.

Abstract:We prove a version of the Cuntz--Krieger Uniqueness Theorem for $C^*$-algebras of arbitrary relative generalized Boolean dynamical systems. We then describe properties of a $C^*$-algebra of a relative generalized Boolean dynamical system when the underlying Boolean dynamical system satisfies Condition (K). We also define a notion of minimality of a Boolean dynamical system and give sufficient and necessary conditions for the minimality. Using these results, we characterize the generalized Boolean dynamical systems who's $C^*$-algebra is simple.

Abstract:We prove basic statements about the Hermitian K-theory of exact form categories with weak equivalences. Notably, we extend a quadratic functor with values in abelian groups from an exact category to its category of bounded chain complexes in a way that does not change Grothendieck-Witt spaces. This is used in joint work with Marlowe for the comparison of the classical 1-categorical version of the Hermitian K-theory of exact categories with the infinity-categorical version of Calmes-Dotto-Harpaz-Hebestreit-Land-Moi-Nardin-Nikolaus-Steimle.

Abstract:We introduce a hierarchy for unital Kirchberg algebras with finitely generated K-groups by which the first and second homotopy groups of the automorphism groups serve as a complete invariant of classification. We also introduce an invariant called the total extension group which is the direct sum of the strong and weak extension groups. In the case of unital Kirchberg algebras with finitely generated K-groups, the total extension group gives a complete invariant and provides a useful tool to classify the Cuntz--Krieger algebras.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a countable abelian group, let $k\geq 1$, and let $\mathrm{X}=(X,\mathcal{X},\mu,T)$ be an ergodic $\Gamma$-system of order $k$ in the sense of Host--Kra--Ziegler. The $\Gamma$-system $\mathrm{X}$ is said to be totally disconnected if all its structure groups are totally disconnected. We show that any totally disconnected $\Gamma$-system of order $k$ is a generalized factor of a $\mathbb{Z}^\omega$-system with the structure of a Weyl system. As a consequence of this structure theorem, we show that totally disconnected $\Gamma$-systems of order $k$ are represented by translations on double cosets of nilpotent Polish groups. By a correspondence principle of two of us, we can use this representation to establish a (weak) inverse theorem for the $U^k$ Gowers uniformity norms on finite abelian groups of bounded torsion.

Abstract:We prove that a family of at least two non-trivial, almost-connected locally compact groups cannot have a coproduct in the category of locally compact groups if at least one of the groups is connected; this confirms the intuition that coproducts in said category are rather hard to come by, save for the usual ones in the category of discrete groups. Along the way we also prove a number of auxiliary results on characteristic indices of locally compact or Lie groups as defined by Iwasawa: that characteristic indices can only decrease when passing to semisimple closed Lie subgroups, and also along dense-image morphisms.

Minimal compact group actions on C$^*$-algebras with simple fixed point algebras

Abstract:The notion of qausi-product actions of a compact group on a C$^*$-algebra was introduced by Bratteli et al. in their attempt to seek an equivariant analogue of Glimm's characterization of non-type I C$^*$-algebras. We show that a faithful minimal action of a second countable compact group on a separable C$^*$-algebra is quasi-product whenever its fixed point algebra is simple. This was previously known only for compact abelian groups and for profinite groups. Our proof relies on a subfactor technique applied to finite index inclusions of simple C$^*$-algebras in the purely infinite case, and also uses ergodic actions of compact groups in the general case. As an application, we show that if moreover the fixed point algebra is a Kirchberg algebra, such an action is always isometrically shift-absorbing, and hence is classifiable by the equivariant KK-theory due to a recent result of Gabe-Szabó.

Abstract:We review the relationship between discrete groups of symmetries of Euclidean three-space, constructions in algebraic geometry around Kleinian singularities including versions of Hilbert and Quot schemes, and their relationship to finite-dimensional and affine Lie algebras via the McKay correspondence. We focus on combinatorial aspects, such as the enumeration of certain types of partition-like objects, reviewing in particular a recently developed root-of-unity-substitution calculus. While the most complete results are in type A, we also develop aspects of the theory in type D, and end with some questions about the exceptional type E cases.

Abstract:We introduce several approaches to studying the Cantor-Bendixson decomposition of and the dynamics on the (topological) space of subgroups for various families of countable groups. In particular, we uncover the perfect kernel and the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the space of subgroups of many new groups, including for instance infinitely ended groups, limit groups, hyperbolic 3-manifold groups and many graphs of groups. We also study the topological dynamics of the conjugation action on the perfect kernel, establishing the conditions for topological transitivity and higher topological transitivity. As an application, we obtain many new examples of groups in the class A of Glasner and Monod, i.e. admitting faithful transitive amenable actions. This includes for example right-angled Artin groups, limit groups, finitely presented C'(1/6) small cancellation groups, random groups at density d<1/6, and more generally all virtually compact special groups.
