Abstract:In this paper we provide a criterion for global secondary bifurcation via symmetry breaking. As an application, the occurrence of period-doubling bifurcations for the Lugiato-Lefever equation is proved.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the equivariant degree theory to establish a global bifurcation result for the existence of non-stationary branches of solutions to a nonlinear, two-parameter family of hyperbolic wave equations with local delay and non-trivial damping. As a motivating example, we consider an application of our result to a system of $N$ identical vibrating strings with dihedral coupling relations.

Abstract:Global bifurcation and spatio-temporal patterns of periodic solutions (with prescribed period) to second order reversible equivariant autonomous systems with commensurate delays are studied using the Brouwer/Leray–Schauder [Formula: see text]-equivariant degree theory. Here, [Formula: see text] is related to the reversal symmetry combined with the autonomous form of the system, [Formula: see text] reflects extra spacial symmetries of the system, and [Formula: see text] is related to the oddness of the right-hand side. Abstract results are supported by a concrete example with [Formula: see text] — the dihedral group of order 12.

Abstract:We give sufficient conditions for the existence of one or two limit cycles of singular Lienard systems through the construction of a Poincare–Bendixson domain. With the help of the theory of rotated vector fields,we develop a method to compute bifurcation value at Saddle-node bifurcation of limit cycles and homoclinic or symmetric heteroclinic bifurcations. We also present application examples and prove the existence of duck cycles.

Bifurcations of Periodic Orbits in the Generalised Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

Abstract:We focus on the existence and persistence of families of saddle periodic orbits in a four-dimensional Hamiltonian reversible ordinary differential equation derived using a travelling wave ansatz from a generalised nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation (GNLSE) with quartic dispersion. In this way, we are able to characterise different saddle periodic orbits with different signatures that serve as organising centres of homoclinic orbits in the ODE and solitons in the GNLSE. To achieve our objectives, we employ numerical continuation techniques to compute these saddle periodic orbits, and study how they organise themselves as surfaces in phase space that undergo changes as a single parameter is varied. Notably, different surfaces of saddle periodic orbits can interact with each other through bifurcations that can drastically change their overall geometry or even create new surfaces of periodic orbits. Particularly we identify three different bifurcations: symmetry-breaking, period-$k$ multiplying, and saddle-node bifurcations. Each bifurcation exhibits a degenerate case, which subsequently gives rise to two bifurcations of the same type that occurs at particular energy levels that vary as a parameter is gradually increased. Additionally, we demonstrate how these degenerate bifurcations induce structural changes in the periodic orbits that can support homoclinic orbits by computing sequences of period-$k$ multiplying bifurcations.

Abstract:In the analysis of parametrized nonautonomous evolutionary equations, bounded entire solutions are natural candidates for bifurcating objects. Appropriate explicit and sufficient conditions for such branchings, however, require to combine contemporary functional analytical methods from the abstract bifurcation theory for Fredholm operators with tools originating in dynamical systems. This paper establishes alternatives classifying the shape of global bifurcating branches of bounded entire solutions to Carathéodory differential equations. Our approach is based on the parity associated to a path of index 0 Fredholm operators, the global Evans function as a recent tool in nonautonomous bifurcation theory and suitable topologies on spaces of Carathéodory functions.

Global Bifurcation of Periodic Solutions in Delay Equations with Symmetric Monotone Feedback

Abstract:We study the periodic solutions of the delay equation $\dot{x}(t)=f(x(t),x(t-1))$, where $f$ scalar is strictly monotone in the delayed component and has even-odd symmetry. We completely describe the global bifurcation structure of periodic solutions via a period map originating from planar ordinary differential equations. Moreover, we prove that the first derivative of the period map determines the local stability of the periodic orbits. This article builds on the pioneering work of Kaplan and Yorke, who found some symmetric periodic solutions for $f$ with even-odd symmetry. We enhance their results by proving that all periodic solutions are symmetric if $f$ is in addition monotone.

Bifurcation and multiplicity of positive solutions for nonhomogeneous fractional Schrodinger equations with critical growth

Abstract:In this paper we study the nonhomogeneous semilinear fractional Schrodinger equation with critical growth {(-Delta)(s)u + u = u(s)(2)*(-1) + lambda(f(x, u) + h(x)), x is an element of R-N, u is an element of H-s(R-N), u(x) > 0, x is an element of R-N, where s is an element of (0, 1), N > 4s, and lambda > 0 is a parameter, 2*(s) = 2N/N-2s is the fractional critical Sobolev exponent, f and h are some given functions. We show that there exists 0 < lambda* < +infinity such that the problem has exactly two positive solutions if lambda is an element of (0, lambda*), no positive solutions for lambda > lambda*, a unique solution (lambda*,u(lambda*)) if lambda = lambda*, which shows that (lambda*,u(lambda*)) is a turning point in H-S (R-N) for the problem. Our proofs are based on the variational methods and the principle of concentration-compactness.

Abstract:In the paper we deal with a quintic Lienard system of the form (x) over dot=y-(a(1)x+a(2)x(3)+a(3)x(5)),(y) over dot=b(1)x+b(2)x(3) Z(2)-symmetry, where a(1),a(2),b(1)is an element of R a(3)b(2) not equal 0. A complete study of this system with b(2) > 0, called the saddle case, is finished, showing that the system exhibits at most two limit cycles, and the necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained on the existence of two limit cycles and a two-saddle heteroclinic loop. We also present a global bifurcation diagram and the corresponding phase portraits of this system, including Hopf bifurcation, Bautin bifurcation, two-saddle heteroclinic loop bifurcation and double limit cycle bifurcation.

Abstract:In this paper, the limit cycles and local bifurcation of critical periods for a class of switching Z2 equivariant quartic system with two symmetric singularities are investigated. First, through the computation of Lyapunov constants, the conditions of the two singularities to become the centers are determined. Then, we prove that there are at most 18 limit cycles with a distribution pattern of 9-9 around the two symmetric singular points of the system. Numerical simulation is conducted to validate the obtained results. Furthermore, by calculating the period constants, we determine the conditions for the critical point to be a weak center of finite order. Finally, the number of local critical periods that bifurcate from the equilibrium point under the center conditions is discussed. This study presents the first example of a quartic switching smooth system with 18 limit cycles and 4 local critical periods bifurcating from two symmetric singular points.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the destruction of the main KAM islands in two-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems occurs through a cascade of period-doubling bifurcations. We calculate the corresponding Feigenbaum constant and the accumulation point of the period-doubling sequence. By means of a systematic grid search on exit basin diagrams, we find the existence of numerous very small KAM islands ('islets') for values below and above the aforementioned accumulation point. We study the bifurcations involving the formation of islets and we classify them in three different types. Finally, we show that the same types of islets appear in generic two-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems and in area-preserving maps.

Abstract:We study the bifurcation of traveling periodic electron layers, that we call electron-states, from symmetric and asymmetric flat velocity strips in the phase space, for the one dimensional Vlasov-Poisson equation with space periodic condition. The boundaries of the constructed solutions are real-analytic and in uniform translation at the same speed in the space direction. These structures are obtained applying Crandall-Rabinowitz's Theorem using either the velocity or geometrical quantities related to the size of the strip as bifurcation parameters. In the first case, we can prove for any fixed symmetry, the emergence of a pair of branches and the local bifurcation diagram has a hyperbolic structure. In the symmetric situation, we find, for any large enough symmetry, one branch whose orientation close to the stationary solution depends on the sign of the prescribed speed of translation. As for the asymmetric case, we find either a countable or a finite number of bifurcation curves according to some constraints related to the prescribed speed of translation. The pitchfork (subcritical or supercritical) bifurcation is also described in this case. Finally, we briefly discuss the global continuation of these branches.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an equivariant degree based method to study bifurcation of periodic solutions (of constant period) in symmetric networks of reversible FDEs. Such a bifurcation occurs when eigenvalues of linearization move along the imaginary axis (without change of stability of the trivial solution and possibly without $1:k$ resonance). Physical examples motivating considered settings are related to stationary solutions to PDEs with non-local interaction: reversible mixed delay differential equations (MDDEs) and integro-differential equations (IDEs). In the case of $S_4$-symmetric networks of MDDEs and IDEs, we present exact computations of full equivariant bifurcation invariants. Algorithms and computational procedures used in this paper are also included.

Bifurcation diagrams of semilinear elliptic equations for supercritical nonlinearities in two dimensions

Abstract:We consider the Gelfand problem with general supercritical nonlinearities in the two-dimensional unit ball. In this paper, we prove the non-existence of an unstable solution for any positive small parameter $\lambda$. The result implies that once the bifurcation curve emanates from the starting point, then the curve never approaches $\lambda=0$. As a result, we obtain the existence of a radial singular solution. In addition, we prove the uniformly boundedness of finite Morse index solutions. As a result, we prove that the bifurcation curve has infinitely many turning points. We remark that these properties are well-known in $N$ dimensions with $3\le N \le 9$ and less known in two dimensions. Our results clarify that the bifurcation structure is solely determined by the supercriticality of the nonlinearities if $2\le N\le 9$.

General study on limit cycle bifurcation near a double eight figure loop

Abstract:In this article, we explore the bifurcation problem of limit cycles near the double eight figure loop (compound cycle with a 2-polycycle connecting two homoclinic loops). A general theory is established to find the lower bound of the maximal number of limit cycles (isolated periodic orbits) near the double eight figure loop. The Liénard system, a well-known nonlinear dynamical model, appears in a natural way in physics, chemistry, engineering, and so on, where periodic phenomena play a relevant role. As an application, we investigate an th-order generalized Liénard system and prove the system has at least limit cycles near the double eight figure loop for any and , and their distribution is also gained.
