Abstract:The tightly focused field of an incident light beam through cubic phase modulation has been investigated by vectorial diffraction theory. For different modulation index of cubic phase and polarization states of the incident light, the focused fields have been presented. The results show that the Airy-like field can be produced by cubic phase modulation under high numerical aperture (NA) optical system. Intensity pattern and length of the main lobe are depended on modulation index for the spatial uniform polarization, and the Airy-like field is affected by polarization state for the spatial nonuniform polarization. It is helpful to structure new optical fields in optical manipulation, optical imaging, and surface plasma controlling.

Abstract:Optical vortices have developed rapidly in recent times owing to their theoretical significance and attractive potential applications in extensive realms. Composite optical vortices using two or more coherently superimposed vortex beams have been widely researched. Here, we propose a novel beam pattern incoherently generated by laser beams with two distinct wavelengths. We apply this beam pattern in fluorescence super-resolution imaging based on the stimulated emission effect, and find that the size of the resulting dark spot in the focal plane lies below the diffraction limit. Crucial factors affecting the sub-diffraction dark spot, such as beam intensities, spatial displacement, pulse width, polarization, and aberration, are studied in detail. We believe that the results are beneficial for experimental studies and will serve as useful references in other circumstances where they may be utilized.

Abstract:On the basis of diffraction integral and the expansion of the hard-aperture function into a finite series of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate expression for spatially fully coherent polychromatic hollow Gaussian beams passing through aperture lens is obtained. Detailed numerical results indicate that remarkable spectral changes always occurs near the points where the field amplitude has zero value. The effects of truncation parameter, Fresnel number and the beam order on spectral shifts and spectral switches are investigated numerically.

Abstract:The description of a plane wave diffracted by a circular aperture is directly started from the Maxwell's equations. Based on the vector angular spectrum representation of Maxwell's equations, the diffracted plane wave is decomposed into the TE and TM terms. The analytical TE and TM terms in the far field are presented by stationary phase. As the TE and TM terms are orthogonal to each other in the far field, their sum constitutes the so-called Airy disc pattern. Therefore, this research reveals the composition of Airy disc, which is beneficial to deepen and enhance the recognition of the classical diffraction problem.

Abstract:We investigated the propagation and autofocusing properties of three Airy-related beams, which are generated by three holograms with unique conjugation and symmetry. Beam patterns are simulated by using angular spectrum formalism and observed experimentally. The autofocusing behavior of black Airy beam is accompanied by formation of eight intensity peaks in the transversal plane. We find that the effect of non-ideal boundary condition is reflected in the diffraction fringes, and the affected ranges are different for different beams.

Abstract:It is known from a number of publications that when a converging, monochromatic spherical wave is diffracted at a circular aperture, the point of maximum intensity of the diffracted wave may not be at the geometrical focus of the incident wave, but may be located closer to the aperture. In the present note we show that when the incident wave is uniform and the angular semi-aperture is small, the ratio of such a shift Δƒ of the point of maximum intensity to the distance ƒ between the geometrical focus and the plane of the aperture depends only on the Fresnel number N of the aperture when viewed from the geometrical focus. The effect becomes significant when N ≲ 5. When N = 1, for example, |Δƒ| ≈ 0.4 ƒ and the maximum intensity is approximately twice as large as the intensity at the geometrical focus.

Abstract:Airy pattern is formed by diffraction of a plane wave through a circular aperture in the far field with certain side lobes. It is shown that Airy pattern can be truncated at the first dark ring by a circular aperture to pick up the center spot (called Airy disc) without causing additional diffraction fringes, even in the very far field. This may be called zero field truncation technique. And is very useful in practice, for example, as a good quality optical source.

Abstract:According to that the boundary wave has a π phase jump property, the diffraction of the plane wave and the spherical wave through an aperture was analyzed by wavefront diagram. The method can be used not only in the case where the aperture radius a is much larger than wavelength λ, but also in the case when aperture radius is close to λ. Many properties of diffraction in the Fresnel region can be obtained. The viewpoint of that the point of unit Fresnel number can be drawn to infinity was proposed and verified by experiment. The existence of the phase jump in boundary wave and its practicability were confirmed.
Spectral changes and 1 X N spectral switches in the diffraction of partially coherent light by an aperture

Abstract:The off-axis and on-axis spectra in the far zone of an aperture for the case in which a particular class of partially coherent light with a broad spectrum is diffracted by an aperture are studied. It is shown that the spectrum in the far zone is generally different from that at the aperture; i.e., the spectrum is split into two or more peaks. Moreover, the spectrum varies with the diffractive angle. For a fixed diffractive angle, the spectral shift, defined as the difference between the frequencies at which the observed spectrum and the spectrum at the aperture take their maximum, shows a gradual change with the change in the coherence at the aperture. However, as the coherence reaches some critical values, the spectral shift exhibits a rapid transition; i.e., spectral switch occurs. The coherence that causes the spectral switch to take place is different for different diffractive angles. Therefore we propose a new kind of 1 x N spectral switch, where N detectors (output ports) are placed at different diffractive angles in the far zone, and the spectral shifts at different detectors are measured. By adjusting the coherence of the aperture (input port) to the desired values, we obtain a rapid transition of the spectral shift in the desired output ports.

Abstract:A simple method for presenting a dynamic transition between Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction zones is considered. Experiments are conducted on different apertures and diffraction patterns are photographed at various distances between the screen and the aperture. A diverging lens is introduced into the experimental setup to provide enlarged Fresnel diffraction patterns. Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction patterns and dynamic transition between them can be easily obtained on a distance of few meters, what gives an opportunity to use our setup as a lecture experiment. Photographs of transition for square aperture are shown and discussed.

Abstract:The scattering of the polychromatic plane light wave incident upon rotational quasi-homogeneous anisotropic media is investigated. It is different from the light wave scattered by quasi-homogeneous isotropic medium in that the spectral shift can be produced by the rotation of the anisotropic medium. Effect of spectral correlations on spectral switches in the diffraction of partially coherent light

Abstract:The subject is the spectral characteristics of partially coherent light whose spectral degree of coherence satisfies or violates the scaling law in diffraction by a circular aperture. Three kinds of spectral correlations of the incident light are considered. It is shown that no matter whether the partially coherent light satisfies or violates the scaling law, a spectral switch defined as a rapid transition of spectral shifts is always found in the diffraction field. Different spectral correlations of the incident field in the aperture result in different points at which the spectral switch occurs. With an increment in the correlations, the position at which the spectral switch takes place moves toward the point at which the phase of the center frequency component omega0 becomes singular for illumination by spatially fully coherent light. For light that satisfies the scaling law, the spectral switch is attributed to the diffraction-induced spectral changes; for partially coherent light that violates the scaling law, the spectral switch is attributed to both the diffraction-induced spectral changes and the correlation-induced spectral changes.

Abstract:Frequency spectra are analyzed for two typical speckle-shearing interference recordings - single-aperture speckle-shearing camera (SASSC) and double-aperture speckle-shearing camera (DASSC) to show the fringe variation due to the displacement involved in differentiation. Abstract:Periodic optical structures, such as diffraction grating and numerous photonic crystals, are one of the staples of modern nanophotonics for the manipulation of electromagnetic radiation. The array of subwavelength dielectric rods is one of the simplest platforms, which, despite its simplicity exhibits extraordinary wave phenomena, such as diffraction anomalies and narrow reflective resonances. Despite the well-documented properties of infinite periodic systems, the behavior of these diffractive effects in systems incorporating a finite number of elements is studied to a far lesser extent. Here we study theoretically and numerically the evolution of collective spectral features in finite arrays of dielectric rods. We develop an analytical model of light scattering by a finite array of circular rods based on the coupled dipoles approximation and analyze the spectral features of finite arrays within the developed model. Finally, we validate the results of the analytical model using full-wave numerical simulations.

Abstract:How aesthetically pleasing is your country's diffraction pattern? This work summarizes the calculated and experimental Fraunhofer diffraction patterns obtained from using apertures lithographically formed into shapes of national borders. Calculations are made based on the fast Fourier transform of the aperture images. The entropy of each of the 113 nations' diffraction patterns was also computed based on its two-dimensional gradient. Results suggest that most nations' diffraction patterns fall under one of two prominent trends forming as a function of geographical area, with one trend being less entropic than the other.
Doppler shift generated by diffraction gratings under time-dependent incidence angle near a Wood anomaly

Abstract:Diffraction gratings are famous for their ability to exhibit, near a Wood anomaly, an arbitrarily large angular dispersion, e.g., with respect to the incidence angle or wavelength. For a diffraction grating under incidence by a plane wave at a fixed frequency, by rotating the incidence angle at a given angular velocity, the field propagated by a nonzero diffraction order will rotate at increasingly fast angular velocity as the incidence angle approaches the angle where Wood anomaly occurs. Such a fast rotating diffracted field has the potential to generate a substantial Doppler shift. Indeed, under the assumption of a grating with infinite extent, the expression for the instantaneous frequency shift perceived by an observer, who is looking into the light radiated by the diffraction order, is derived and it is in full agreement with the prediction from an interpretation based on the Doppler shift generated by a rotation of light sources. In particular the classical (non-relativistic) Doppler shift can take arbitrarily high values as the incidence angle approaches a Wood anomaly. It is also found that gratings of a finite size can have a similar property. In order to have a physically detectable frequency shift, it is important to use a grating which can maintain a significant reflectance into higher diffraction orders near their Wood anomaly cut-off. Interestingly, we have found that the geometry of the nanostructures of a \emph{Morpho} butterfly wing scale is aptly suited for such a function because it can strongly reflect into higher diffraction orders while minimising the reflection into the specular order.

Abstract:The general features of the light scattering resulting in the so-called resonant Wood's anomalies in the reflection and transmission spectra are described using the effective parameters of a quasi-guided mode. The expression determining the spectral angular dependence of Wood's anomaly in the case of plasmonic grating structures is given and compared to the analogous expression for dielectric grating structures. Comparison of the resonant Wood's anomalies (RWA) with the surface plasmon-polariton resonances (SPPRs) is discussed as well.

Abstract:We consider Wood anomalies in diffraction spectrum from two-dimensional dielectric periodic grid embedded in a surrounding media. The grid is of subwavelength thickness, and diffraction of wave having S-polarization is investigated in the vicinity of the emergence of first diffraction maximum. We reduce Maxwell equations to coupled-mode theory with three parameters, which are integral characteristics of material arrangement in the grid. In particular, we show that such grids are capable to have full reflectance in parametrically narrow frequency bandwidth. The effect is accompanied by a parametric evanescent field enhancement in the region near the grid. In particular, we consider grids with sinusoidal profile and show that this type of grids possesses unique diffraction properties due to absence of the guided mode coupling. For such grids, there is a thin transparency window at a background of near to zero transmission at slightly nonnormal incidence. We estimate what are enough grid size and the incident beam flatness to resolve the singularities.

Abstract:Under conditions of total internal reflection (TIR) of a plane bulk electromagnetic wave incident from outside on the surface of an optically transparent layered structure, the case where the numerator and denominator of the input surface wave impedance turn simultaneously to zero may correspond to the formation of a "dark" state. This is related to the occurrence of a point of degeneracy of the spectra of leaking exceptional surface waves (ESWs) of the first and second kind against the background of the continuous spectrum of radiative modes. For these waves, the instantaneous energy flux through the interface with a semibounded optical denser medium in an open radiative channel is zero at any instant. When approaching the point of dark state occurrence, the local maxima of the effects of first-order nonspecular reflection, accompanying resonant excitation of leaky ESWs, unlimitedly increase.
