Abstract:We determine bubble tree convergence for a sequence of harmonic maps, with uniform energy bounds, from a compact Riemann surface into a compact locally CAT(1) space. In particular, we demonstrate energy quantization and the no-neck property for such a sequence. In the smooth setting, Jost and Parker respectively established these results by exploiting now classical arguments for harmonic maps. Our work demonstrates that these results can be reinterpreted geometrically. In the absence of a PDE, we take advantage of the local convexity properties of the target space. Included in this paper are an $\epsilon$-regularity theorem, an energy gap theorem, and a removable singularity theorem for harmonic maps for harmonic maps into metric spaces with upper curvature bounds. We also prove an isoperimetric inequality for conformal harmonic maps with small image.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the bubble - tree convergence problem of harmonic map sequences from compact Riemann surfaces to compact local CAT(1) spaces with upper curvature bounds. Specifically, the authors Christine Breiner and Sajjad Lakzian explore the energy quantization and no - neck properties of such harmonic map sequences under the condition of a given uniform energy bound. These results have been proven by Jost, Parker, etc. in smooth manifolds, and this paper generalizes these results to metric spaces, with particular emphasis on the use of local convexity to overcome the lack of partial differential equations (PDE).
### Main contributions:
1. **Energy quantization**: It is proven that the energy of the harmonic map sequence can be quantified in the limit process, that is, the loss of energy can be accurately expressed as the sum of the energies of a series of "bubbles" (i.e., harmonic maps from \( S^2 \) to the target space).
\[
\lim_{k \to \infty} E[u_k, M] = E[u, I, T] + \sum_{i = 1}^{\ell} E[\omega_i]
\]
2. **No - neck property**: It is proven that at each bubble point, the images of the base graph and the bubble graph are continuous in the limit process, that is, there is no intermediate "neck" region that causes the loss of energy or image.
\[
u_{i_1 \ldots i_n - 1}(y_{i_1 \ldots i_n}) = u_{i_1 \ldots i_n}(p_+)
\]
### Methods and techniques:
- **Weak differential inequality**: Due to the lack of PDE, the authors use the local minimum property of harmonic maps and the local convexity of the target space to derive weak differential inequalities.
- **ε - regularity theorem**: Prove an ε - regularity theorem to control the behavior of the gradient of harmonic maps in small - energy regions.
- **Energy gap theorem**: Prove that when the energy of a harmonic map is less than a certain threshold, the map must be a constant map.
- **Removable singularity theorem**: Prove that a harmonic map with finite energy can be extended to a locally Lipschitz - continuous harmonic map at the singularity.
- **Isoperimetric inequality**: Prove the isoperimetric inequality for harmonic maps under the conditions of small area and small image.
### Structural overview:
- **Preliminaries**: Define relevant terms and provide necessary background knowledge.
- **Analogies of classical results**: Prove the analogies of four key properties (upper bound estimate, energy gap, uniform convergence, removable singularity) of harmonic maps in local CAT(1) spaces.
- **Proof of the main theorem**: Use the above tools to gradually prove the main theorem of bubble - tree convergence.
Through these methods and techniques, the authors successfully generalize the classical results in smooth manifolds to more general metric spaces, providing new perspectives and tools for the development of harmonic map theory.
