Abstract:We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin–Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M is symplectic with a Hamiltonian action of G that is proper and cocompact. This essentially solves a conjecture of Hochs and Landsman.

Abstract:Motivated by the work of Leininger on hyperbolic equivalence of homotopy classes of closed curves on surfaces, we investigate a similar phenomenon for free groups. Namely, we study the situation when two elements $g,h$ in a free group $F$ have the property that for every free isometric action of $F$ on an $\mathbb{R}$-tree $X$ the translation lengths of $g$ and $h$ on $X$ are equal. We give a combinatorial characterization of this phenomenon, called translation equivalence, in terms of Whitehead graphs and exhibit two difference sources of it. The first source of translation equivalence comes from representation theory and $SL_2$ trace identities. The second source comes from geometric properties of groups acting on real trees and a certain power redistribution trick. We also analyze to what extent these are applicable to the tree actions of surface groups that occur in the Thurston compactification of the Teichmuller space.

Abstract:We give a new categorical approach to the Halmos-von Neumann theorem for actions of general topological groups. As a first step, we establish that the categories of topological and measure-preserving irreducible systems with discrete spectrum are equivalent. This allows to prove the Halmos-von Neumann theorem in the framework of topological dynamics. We then use the Pontryagin and Tannaka-Krein duality theories to obtain classification results for topological and then measure-preserving systems with discrete spectrum. As a byproduct, we obtain a complete isomorphism invariant for compactifications of a fixed topological group.

Abstract:We extend several techniques and theorems from geometric group theory so that they apply to geometric actions on arbitrary proper metric ARs (absolute retracts). A second way that we generalize earlier results is by eliminating freeness requirements often placed on the group actions. In doing so, we allow for groups with torsion. The main theorems are new in that they generalize results found in the literature, but a significant aim is expository. Toward that end, brief but reasonably comprehensive introductions to the theories of ANRs (absolute neighborhood retracts) and Z-sets are included, as well as a much shorter short introduction to shape theory. Here is a sampling of the theorems proved here. THEOREM. If quasi-isometric groups G and H act geometrically on proper metric ARs X and Y , resp., then X is proper homotopy equivalent to Y. THEOREM. If quasi-isometric groups G and H act geometrically on proper metric ARs X and Y , resp., and Y can be compactified to a Z-structure for H, then the same boundary can be added to X to obtain a Z-structure for G. THEOREM. If quasi-isometric groups G and H admit Z-structures (X^, Z_1) and (Y^, Z_2) resp., then Z_1 and Z_2 are shape equivalent.

Abstract:Giving a condition for the the amenability of groups, Rosenblatt and Willis, first introduced the concept of configuration. From the beginning of the theory, the question whether the concept of configuration equivalence coincides with the concept of group isomorphism was posed. We negatively answer this open question by introducing two non-isomorphic, solvable and hence amenable groups which are configuration equivalent. Also, we will study some types of subgroups in configuration equivalent groups. In particular, we will prove this conjecture, due to Rosenblatt and Willis, that configuration equivalent groups, both include the free non-Abelian group of same rank or not. Finally, we prove that two-sided equivalent groups have same class numbers.

Twisted Gaiotto equivalence for $\rm{GL}(M|N)$

Abstract:In $\rm{GL}_N$, a series of subgroups indexed by $0\leq M\leq N-1$ were noticed by H. Jacquet-I. Piatetski Shapiro-J. Shalika, J. Cogdell, and D. Gaiotto. It was conjectured by D. Gaiotto that the categories of twisted D-modules on the affine Grassmannian of $\rm{GL}_N$ with equivariant structure with respect to these subgroups are equivalent to the categories of representations of quantum supergroups $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(M|N))$. When $M=0$ and $M=N-1$, this conjecture was proved due to D. Gaitsgory and A. Braverman-M. Finkelberg-R. Travkin, respectively. In this paper, we prove the other cases. We adapt the global method originating from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0611323" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0611323">arXiv:math/0611323</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0705.4571" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0705.4571">arXiv:0705.4571</a>. In order to compare the global definition of Gaiotto category with the local definition, we generalize the local-global comparison theorem of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1811.02468" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1811.02468">arXiv:1811.02468</a> to a general setting.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the classification of classes of topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. By the Riemann-Hurwitz bound, there are just finitely many groups that act conformally on a closed orientable surface $\mathcal{S}_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$. With each such action of a group $\mathrm{G}$ on $\mathcal{S}_g$ one can associate the fundamental group $\Gamma=\pi(\mathcal{O})$ of the quotient orbifold $\mathcal{O}=\mathcal{S}_g/\mathrm{G}$, isomorphic to a Fuchsian group determined completely by orbifold's signature. The Riemann existence theorem reduces the problem of the existence of an action of $\mathrm{G}$ on $\mathcal{S}_g$ to a purely group-theoretical problem of deciding whether there is an smooth epimorphism mapping the Fuchsian group $\Gamma$ onto the group $\mathrm{G}$. Using computer algebra systems such as \textsc{Magma} or GAP, together with the library of small groups, the generation of all finite group actions on a surface of fixed small genus $g\geq 2$ becomes almost a routine procedure. The difficult part is to determine the classes of these actions with respect to topological equivalence. To achieve this, one needs to investigate the action of the automorphism group of a Fuchsian group on the set of finite group actions on $\mathcal{S}_g$ with the corresponding signature. In this paper we derive several results on the topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. As an application, we derive complete lists of finite group actions of genus $g\leq 9$ distinguished up to the topological equivalence. A summary of the actions can be found in Appendix, the reader interested in more details is referred to the web page [22]. It is expected that we will be able to extend the list to higher genera, refreshed partial results are available on the web page. The following text is an extended version of the paper [23].

Abstract:We consider equivalence relations among smooth map germs with respect to geometry of G-structures on the target space germ. These equivalence relations are natural generalization of right-left equivalence (i.e., A-equivalence) in the sense of Thom-Mather depending on geometric structures on the target space germ. Unfortunately, these equivalence relations are not necessarily geometric subgroups in the sense of Damon (1984). However, we have interesting applications of these equivalence relations.

Abstract:In previous work with Harman, we introduced a new class of representations for an oligomorphic group $G$, depending on an auxiliary piece of data called a measure. In this paper, we look at this theory when $G$ is the symmetry group of the Cantor set. We show that $G$ admits exactly two measures $\mu$ and $\nu$. The representation theory of $(G, \mu)$ is the linearization of the category of $\mathbf{F}_2$-vector spaces, studied in recent work of the author and closely connected to work of Kuhn and Kovács. The representation theory of $(G, \nu)$ is the linearization of the category of vector spaces over the Boolean semi-ring (or, equivalently, the correspondence category), studied by Bouc--Thévenaz. The latter case yields an important counterexample in the general theory.

Abstract:Cryptographic group actions are a relaxation of standard cryptographic groups that have less structure. This lack of structure allows them to be plausibly quantum resistant despite Shor's algorithm, while still having a number of applications. The most famous examples of cryptographic group actions are built from isogenies on elliptic curves. Our main result is that CDH for abelian group actions is quantumly equivalent to discrete log. Galbraith et al. (Mathematical Cryptology) previously showed perfectly solving CDH to be equivalent to discrete log quantumly; our result works for any non-negligible advantage. We also explore several other questions about group action and isogeny protocols.

Abstract:For an action of a discrete group $\Gamma$ on a set $X$, we show that the Schreier graph on $X$ has property A if and only if the permutation representation on $\ell_2X$ generates an exact $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra. This is well known in the case of the left regular action on $X=\Gamma$ as the equivalence of $\mathrm{C}^*$-exactness and property A of its Cayley graph. This also generalizes Sako's theorem, which states that exactness of the uniform Roe algebra $\mathrm{C}^*_{\mathrm{u}}(X)$ characterizes property A of $X$ when $X$ is uniformly locally finite.

Abstract:We prove that measure-class-preserving non-amenable treeable equivalence relations of type III, meaning not preserving any equivalent $\sigma$-finite measure, are induced by free actions of non-abelian free groups of any given number of generators, including infinitely generated free groups, with the additional property that no ends of the induced Schreier graph are vanishing. This is done using a characterization of type III due to Hopf for transformations and Dang-Ngoc-Nghiem in general. This highlights the difference between the type III setting and the measure-preserving setting.

Comparison has many desired consequences for the action, such as the existence of tilings with arbitrarily good F{o}lner properties, which are factors of the action. Also, the theory of symbolic extensions, known for $mathbb z$-actions, extends to actions which admit comparison. We also study a purely group-theoretic notion of comparison: if every action of $G$ on any zero-dimensional compact metric space admits comparison then we say that $G$ has the emph{comparison property}. Classical groups $mathbb z$ and $mathbb z^d$ enjoy the comparison property, but in the general case the problem remains open. In this paper we prove this property for groups whose every finitely generated subgroup has subexponential growth.

We also show the following homotopy rigidity result, which may be understood as a precursor to a general Kirchberg–Phillips-type classification theory: If two outer actions of an amenable group on a unital Kirchberg algebra are equivariantly homotopy equivalent, then they are conjugate. This marks the first C*-dynamical classification result up to cocycle conjugacy that is applicable to actions of all amenable groups.

Abstract:We give a new proof of a theorem of Giordano, Putnam and Skau characterizing orbit equivalence of minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor space in terms of their sets of invariant Borel probability measures. The proof is based on a strengtehning of a theorem of Krieger concerning minimal actions of certain locally finite groups of homeomorphisms, and we also give a new proof of the Giordano--Putnam--Skau characterization of orbit equivalence for these actions.
