Abstract:The circular polarization of gravitational waves is a powerful observable to test parity violation in gravity and to distinguish between the primordial or the astrophysical origin of the stochastic background. This property comes from the expected unpolarized nature of the homogeneous and isotropic astrophysical background, contrary to some specific cosmological sources that can produce a polarized background. However, in this work we show that there is a non-negligible amount of circular polarization also in the astrophysical background, generated by Poisson fluctuations in the number of unresolved sources, which can be detected by the third-generation interferometers with signal-to-noise ratio larger than one. We also explain in which cases the gravitational wave maps can be cleaned from this extra source of noise, exploiting the frequency and the angular dependence, in order to search for signals from the early Universe. Future studies about the detection of polarized cosmological backgrounds with ground- and space-based interferometers should account for the presence of such a foreground contribution.

Abstract:The stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) is a rich resource of cosmological information, encoded both in its source statistics and anisotropies induced by propagation effects. We provide a theoretical description of it, without employing theoretical tools which rely on the geometric optics limit. Our formalism is based on the so-called {\it classical matter approximation} and it is able to capture wave-optics effects, such as interference and diffraction. We show that the interaction between the gravitational waves and the cosmic structures along the line-of-sight produce observable scalar and vector polarization modes, on top of modulating the tensorial ones. We build the two point correlation function describing the statistics of the SGWB, and introduce the intensity and gravitational Stokes parameters for all its components. In the case of an unpolarized, Gaussian and statistically homogeneous SGWB, we show that the interaction with matter modulates its intensity and does not generate a net difference between left- and right- helicity tensor and vector modes, as expected. We demonstrate that, in order to produce $Q_T$- and $U_T$- tensor polarization modes the background must posses an hexadecapole anisotropy, while a quandrupole anisotropy can source the vector $Q_V$- and $U_V$- Stokes parameters.

Abstract:There are conflicting statements in the literature about the gravitational Faraday rotation of the plane of polarization of polarized electromagnetic radiation travelling through a gravitational wave. This issue is reconsidered using a simple formalism describing the rotation of the plane of polarization in a gravitational field, in the geometric optics approximation. It is shown that, to first order in the gravitational wave amplitude, the rotation angle is a boundary effect which vanishes for localized (astrophysically generated) gravitational waves and is non-zero, but nevertheless negligible, for cosmological gravitational waves.

Polarization modes of gravitational waves in general Einstein-vector theory

Abstract:We study the polarization modes of gravitational waves in general Einstein-vector theory with an arbitrary constant background vector field under a Minkowski background. We compare these polarization modes with those of other vector-tensor theories and constrain the parameter spaces based on the gravitational-wave event GW170817 with its electromagnetic counterpart GRB170817A and observations of pulsar timing arrays. The presence of the background vector field leads to the anisotropy of space and a rich variety of gravitational waves contents. Our results reveal that the polarization modes of gravitational waves depend on the parameter spaces. There are at least two and at most five independent polarization modes in one parameter space. In different parameter spaces, some mixture modes are allowed, including tensor-vector, tensor-scalar, tensor-vector-scalar, vector-scalar, and scalar-scalar mixture modes, as well as five independent modes (excluding $P_l$): $P_+$, $P_{\times}$, $P_x$, $P_y$, and $P_b$. In all regions of the parameter spaces, there are always two tensor modes, which can be either independent of or mixed with other modes. The independent $P_b$ mode consistently exhibits the same speed as light. If the speed of tensorial gravitational waves strictly equals that of light, only the $P_+$, $P_{\times}$, and $P_b$ modes are permitted. Furthermore, through comparisons of some vector-tensor theories and based on the observations of gravitational waves, the $P_b$ mode is expected to be allowed.

Abstract:We provide analysis to determine the effects of gravitational waves on electromagnetic waves, using perturbation theory in general relativity. Our analysis is performed in a completely covariant manner without invoking any coordinates. For a given observer, in the geometrical-optics approximation, we work out the perturbations of the phase, amplitude, frequency and polarization properties--axes of ellipse and ellipticity of light, due to gravitational waves. With regard to the observation of gravitational waves, we discuss the measurement of Stokes parameters, through which the antenna patterns are presented to show the detectability of the gravitational wave signals.

Abstract:Gravitational field can cause a rotation of polarisation plane of light. This phenomenon is known as the gravitational Faraday effect. We study the gravitational Faraday effect of linearly polarised light propagating in the gravitational field of a weak plane gravitational wave (GW) with $+$, $\times$, and elliptical polarisation modes. The corresponding gravitational Faraday rotation is proportional to the wave amplitude and to the squared distance traveled by light and it is inversely proportional to the GW's squared wavelength. The rotation is also maximal if light propagates in the direction perpendicular to the GW propagation, along directions of its polarisation. There is no gravitational Faraday rotation when light and the GW propagate in the same or opposite directions, or it propagates along directions perpendicular to directions of the GW polarisation. Helicity of elliptically polarised GW gives higher-order contribution to the gravitational Faraday rotation.

Abstract:In the weak field regime, gravitational waves can be considered as being made up of collisionless, relativistic tensor modes that travel along null geodesics of the perturbed background metric. We work in this geometric optics picture to calculate the anisotropies in gravitational wave backgrounds resulting from astrophysical and cosmological sources. Our formalism yields expressions for the angular power spectrum of the anisotropies. We show how the anisotropies are sourced by intrinsic, Doppler, Sachs-Wolfe, and Integrated Sachs-Wolfe terms in analogy with Cosmic Microwave Background photons.

Abstract:Gravitational waves (GWs) have opened a new window on fundamental physics in a number of important ways. The next generation of GW detectors may reveal more information about the polarization structure of GWs. Additionally, there is growing interest in theories of gravity beyond general relativity (GR). One such theory which remains viable within the context of recent measurements of the speed of propagation of GWs is the teleparallel analog of Horndeski gravity. In this work, we explore the polarization structure of this newly proposed formulation of Horndeski theory. In curvature-based gravity, Horndeski theory is almost synonymous with extensions to GR since it spans a large portion of these possible extensions. We perform this calculation by taking perturbations about a Minkowski background and consider which mode propagates. The result is that the polarization structure depends on the choice of model parameters in the teleparallel Horndeski Lagrangian with a maximum of seven propagating degrees of freedom. While the curvature-based Horndeski results follows as a particular limit within this setup, we find a much richer structure of both massive and massless cases which produce scalar-vector-tensor propagating degrees of freedom. We also find that the GW polarization that emerges from the teleparallel analog of Horndeski gravity results in analogous massive and massless modes which take on at most four polarizations in the massless sector and two scalar ones in the massive sector. In none of the cases do we find vector polarizations.

Abstract:This paper focuses on how the production and polarization of gravitational waves are affected by spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking, which is driven by a self-interacting vector field. Specifically, we examine the impact of a smooth quadratic potential and a non-minimal coupling, discussing the constraints and causality features of the linearized Einstein equation. To analyze the polarization states of a plane wave, we consider a fixed vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the vector field. Remarkably, we verify that a space-like background vector field modifies the polarization plane and introduces a longitudinal degree of freedom. In order to investigate the Lorentz violation effect on the quadrupole formula, we use the modified Green function. Finally, we show that the space-like component of the background field leads to a third-order time derivative of the quadrupole moment, and the bounds for the Lorentz-breaking coefficients are estimated as well.

Abstract:Does gravity affect the polarization of electromagnetic radiation in an observable way? The effect of gravity on the observed polarization of a ray of electromagnetic radiation is investigated for an arbitrary 4-dimensional spacetime and radiation with a frequency spectrum within the geometric optics limit and with arbitrary state of polarization. Focusing on effects observable by a single inertial observer, we show how the presence of curvature along the null geodesic of polarized electromagnetic radiation may induce observable changes in the state of polarization. We find a set of scalars that quantify the effect and derive their transport equations. Two of these scalars, the polarization degree and the circular polarization degree , are polarization state observables that are conserved along the radiation geodesic. Four observables that quantify time rate of change of the observed state of polarization are identified. One observable, the polarization axis rotation rate , measures angular motion of the polarization axis. The presence of curvature along the null geodesic of polarized electromagnetic radiation may induce rotation of the polarization axis of the radiation, as measured by an inertial observer. These observables quantify gravitational effects on electromagnetic polarization unambiguously. They are generally sensitive to gravity, which implies that polarized electromagnetic radiation can potentially be used to measure the gravitational fields it traverses. These observables and their corresponding transport equations provide a complete representation of how gravity affects the observed state of polarization of electromagnetic radiation with frequencies above the geometric optics limit. Polarization wiggling is sourced by curvature twist, which is a scalar derived from the Riemann tensor. Curvature twist is closely related to the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor, the second Weyl scalar as well as the rotation of the rest frame geodesic congruence. The results of this paper are valid for any metric theory of gravity.

Abstract:We discuss the polarization of gravitational radiation within the standard framework of linearized general relativity. The recent experimental discovery of gravitational waves provides the impetus to revisit the implications of the spin-rotation-gravity coupling for polarized gravitational radiation; therefore, we consider the coupling of the helicity of gravitational waves to the rotation of an observer or the gravitomagnetic field of a rotating astronomical source. Observational possibilities regarding polarization-dependent effects in connection with future gravitational wave detectors are briefly explored.

Abstract:The measurement of the integrated optical polarization of weakly gravitationally lensed galaxies can provide considerable constraints on lens models. The method outlined depends on fact that the orientation of the direction of optical polarization is not affected by weak gravitational lensing. The angle between the semi-major axis of the imaged galaxy and the direction of integrated optical polarization thus informs one of the distortion produced by the gravitational lensing. Although the method depends on the polarimetric measurement of faint galaxies, large telescopes and improved techniques should make such measurements possible in the near future.

Imprints of Dark Photons on Gravitational Wave Polarizations

Abstract:We study conversion processes between gravitons and dark photons and reveal the effects of dark photons on the polarization of gravitational waves. Considering cosmological dark magnetic fields, we investigate the evolution of the intensity and polarization of gravitational waves through the conversion. Specifically, we demonstrate that for minimal coupling between gravitons and dark photons, the intensity, circular polarization, and linear polarization evolve separately. We derive explicit formulas for the statistical mean and variance of the intensity and polarization when the gravitational waves pass through magnetic fields with random orientation. The formulas capture how the initial polarization of dark photons will be imprinted on the observed gravitational wave background.

Abstract:We have recently derived a manifestly covariant evolution law, under the geometrical optics (or eikonal) approximation of the vacuum Maxwell equations, for the electric field along null geodesics in a general spacetime, relative to an arbitrary set of instantaneous observers [ Phys. Rev. D 101 , 081501(R) (2020) ]. As one of its applications, we derive here the final detected intensity signal arising from a prototypical laser interferometric gravitational-wave (GW) Michelson-Morley detector, comoving with transverse-traceless (TT) observers, valid for both long and short GW wavelengths (as compared to the lengths of the interferometers arms). The motion of the test particles and light is described through the covariant kinematic and optical parameters. One of our main results is the presentation of the integrated null geodesic parametric equations exchanged between two TT observers in terms of explicitly observable quantities (laser initial frequency and positions of the observers) and the profile of the plane GW packet. This allows us to revisit the derivation of the consequential radar distance and Doppler shift, taking the opportunity to discuss some related subtle conceptual issues and how they might affect the interferometric process. Another achievement is the calculation of the electric field in each arm up to the detection event, for any relative orientations of the arms and the GW direction. The main quantitative result is the new expression for the final interference pattern, for normal GW incidence, which turns out to have three contributions: (i) the well-known traditional one due to the difference in optical paths, and two new ones due to (ii) the Doppler effect and (iii) the divergence of the laser beams. The quantitative relevance of the last two contributions is compared to the traditional one and shown to be negligible within the geometrical optics regime of light. Although in general further contributions from the nonparallel transport of the polarization vector are expected [cf. Phys. Rev. Abstract:Symmetric teleparallel gravity (STG) offers an interesting avenue to formulate a theory of gravitation that relies neither on curvature nor torsion but only on nonmetricity Q. Given the growing number of confirmed observations of gravitational waves (GWs) and their use to explore gravitational theories, in this work we investigate the GWs in various extensions of STG, focusing on their speed and polarization. We explore the plethora of theories that this new framework opens up, that is, as general relativity can be modified, so can the symmetric teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (STEGR). In this work, we investigate the fate of GWs in the generalized irreducible decomposition of STEGR, generalizations of the STEGR Lagrangian, f(Q), a scalar field nonminimally coupled to the STEGR Lagrangian, and the general setup of f(Q, B) theory where B is the boundary term difference between the Ricci scalar and the STEGR Lagrangian. Coincidentally, f(Q, B) forms a more general theory than f(R) gravity since Q embodies the second-order elements of the Ricci scalar while B takes on its fourth-order boundary terms. Our work deals mainly with the resulting scalar-vector-tensor polarization modes of the plethora of STG theories, and how they effect their respective speeds of propagation.
Sensing Gravity with Polarized Electromagnetic Radiation

Abstract:Polarization wiggling is a direct gravitational effect exerted by a gravitational field on any electromagnetic radiation traversing it. This effect is investigated in linear gravity for spacetimes with flat or conformally flat backgrounds. First, we show how the polarization wiggle rates can be computed in the conformal frame and transformed to the physical frame. Then it is shown that polarization wiggling is not sensitive to scalar perturbations to the metric, while vector and tensor perturbations do induce polarization wiggling. This poses two natural questions: Can polarized electromagnetic radiation be used to measure vectorial and tensorial components of gravitational fields directly? And if so, how? Next, polarization wiggling is studied for an arbitrary vector perturbation to the spacetime metric. In a stationary spacetime, the polarization wiggle rate is proportional to the difference in frame dragging rates between radiation emission and measurement events. We show how this can be used to measure the angular momentum of a gravitational source if the emitter orbits the gravitational source on a known orbit. Next, the effect of a gravitational tensor mode with arbitrary polarization is studied. Finally, the polarization wiggling effect induced by a gravitational tensor mode is analyzed. Two cases are demonstrated: A spacetime with a flat Minkowski background and an expanding cosmology with a conformally flat background. In both cases, the polarization wiggling frequency equals the frequency of the gravitational tensor mode, while the other state parameters are encoded in the polarization wiggling amplitude and phase of the polarized radiation. We show that measurements of polarization wiggling frequency, amplitude and phase of polarized radiation from different directions enables all state parameters of a gravitational tensor mode to be determined.

Polarizations of Gravitational Waves in the Bumblebee Gravity Model

Abstract:Lorentz violation modifies the dispersion relation of gravitational waves (GWs), and induces birefringence and anisotropy in propagation. Our study shows that Lorentz violation can also activate multiple polarizations of GWs. We use the gauge invariants to investigate the polarizations of GWs in the bumblebee gravity model, and obtain the following results. (i) For a vector background b mu with only a nonzero temporal component b', there are five independent propagating degrees of freedom (d.o.f.), which is similar to the Einstein-nether theory. (ii) The presence of a spatial component in the background defines a preferred spatial direction which breaks rotational symmetry. We denote b as the direction of the spatial part of the background and bs as its length. If GWs propagate along b, the polarization content is similar to the purely timelike case. (iii) If the propagation direction of GWs is separated by an angle /3 to b, and independent d.o.f., and the vector and scalar modes degenerate with the tensor modes. The tensor perturbations can activate a mixture of all six polarizations simultaneously. Finally, we point out the difference in GWs between the bumblebee gravity model and the minimal Standard-Model Extension framework in the linearized regime. Current observations have placed stringent constraints on the anisotropy induced by the background, while our theoretical study still reveals some novel phenomena and provides more understanding about the interaction between the Lorentz-violating vector field and gravity.
The gravitational field of a light wave

Abstract:According to the classical Einstein-Maxwell theory of gravity and electromagnetism, a light-wave traveling in empty space-time is accompanied by a gravitational field of the pp-type. Therefore point masses are scattered by a light wave, even if they carry no electric or magnetic charge, or dipole moment. In this paper I present the explicit form of the metric and curvature for both circularly and linearly polarized light, and discuss the geodesic motion of test masses. This is followed by a discussion of classical scattering of point particles by the gravitational field associated with a circularly polarized electromagnetic block wave. A generalization to a quantum theory of particles in the background of these classical wave fields is presented in terms of the covariant Klein-Gordon equation. I derive the energy spectrum of quantum particles in the specific case of the circularly polarized block wave. Finally, a few general remarks on the extension to a quantum light wave are presented.

Linear polarization of the stochastic gravitational-wave background with pulsar timing arrays

Abstract:Pulsar-timing collaborations have recently reported evidence for the detection of an isotropic stochastic gravitational-wave background consistent with one sourced by a population of inspiralling supermassive black hole binaries. However, a certain degree of anisotropy and polarization may be present. Thus, the characterization of the energy density and polarization of the background at different angular scales is important. In this paper, we describe the signatures of linear polarization in the stochastic gravitational-wave background on the timing residuals obtained with pulsar-timing arrays. We expand the linear polarization map in terms of spin-weighted spherical harmonics and recast it into the $E$-mode (parity even) and $B$-mode (parity odd) basis. We provide expressions for the minimum-variance estimators for the coefficients of that expansion and evaluate the smallest detectable signal as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio with which the isotropic GW signal is detected and the number of pulsars in the survey. We evaluate the covariance between the estimators for the spherical-harmonic coefficients of the linear polarization $E$-modes and those for the intensity anisotropy. We also show that there is no covariance between the spherical-harmonic coefficients for the $B$-modes of the linear polarization and those for the circular polarization, even though both have the same parity. Our approach results in simple, elegant, and easily evaluated expressions for the overlap reduction functions for linear polarization.
