Abstract:The spatial separation of electron spins followed by the control of their individual spin dynamics has recently emerged as an essential ingredient in many proposals for spin-based technologies because it would enable both of the two spin species to be simultaneously utilized, distinct from most of the current spintronic studies and technologies wherein only one spin species could be handled at a time. Here we demonstrate that the spatial spin splitting of a coherent beam of electrons can be achieved and controlled using the interplay between an external magnetic field and Rashba spin-orbit interaction in semiconductor nanostructures. The technique of transverse magnetic focusing is used to detect this spin separation. More notably, our ability to engineer the spin-orbit interactions enables us to simultaneously manipulate and probe the coherent spin dynamics of both spin species and hence their correlation, which could open a route towards spintronics and spin-based quantum information processing.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to solve how to achieve and control the spatial separation of electron spins and their coherent dynamics in nanostructures with spin - orbit coupling. Specifically, the paper addresses the following key issues: 1. **Spatial spin separation**: - Traditional spintronics techniques can usually handle only one type of spin (i.e., the majority spin) and cannot operate on two types of spins simultaneously. This limits the study of the correlation between different spin types. - To overcome this limitation, the paper proposes a new method to achieve the spatial separation of electron spins in semiconductor nanostructures by combining an external magnetic field and Rashba spin - orbit interaction. 2. **Control of spin coherent dynamics**: - How the spatially separated spins can maintain their coherence and whether they can be precisely controlled is an important scientific problem. - The paper shows how to manipulate and detect the coherent dynamics of two types of spins by adjusting the Rashba spin - orbit interaction, thereby achieving electrical control of their phase correlation. 3. **Experimental verification and application prospects**: - The feasibility of the above concepts and techniques has been proven through experiments, and the potential applications of these techniques in future spintronics and spin - based quantum information processing have been explored. ### Formula summary The key formulas involved in the paper include: - **Calculation of the focusing magnetic field**: \[ B_{\uparrow \downarrow} = \frac{2 \hbar k_{\uparrow \downarrow}}{eL} = \frac{2 \sqrt{2m^* E_F \mp m^* \alpha / \hbar}}{eL} \] where \(\hbar\) is the reduced Planck constant, \(e\) is the elementary charge, \(m^*\) is the effective mass, \(E_F\) is the Fermi energy, \(k_{\uparrow}\) and \(k_{\downarrow}\) are the Fermi wave vectors of the spin - up and spin - down states respectively, and \(\alpha\) characterizes the strength of the Rashba spin - orbit interaction. - **Spin precession angle**: \[ \phi(V_T) = \omega_s^{\uparrow \downarrow} t^{\uparrow \downarrow} = \frac{\pi m^* \alpha(V_T) L}{\hbar^2} \] where \(\omega_s^{\uparrow \downarrow}\) is the spin precession frequency and \(t^{\uparrow \downarrow}\) is the time interval of the focusing process. Through these formulas, the paper shows how to use the external magnetic field and spin - orbit interaction to achieve precise control of the spatial separation of electron spins and their coherent dynamics.
