Abstract:A pseudo ternary diffusion couple technique in a multicomponent system by simplifying the mathematical complications of Onsager formalism is proposed for the estimation of composition dependent values of the interdiffusion coefficients. This is otherwise impossible following the conventional method in a system with more than three components. Other alternative methods estimate the average diffusion coefficients over a composition range of random choice and lack physical significance. This method can be followed in a multicomponent system with any number of components on the condition that only three components develop diffusion profiles keeping others as constant.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the difficult problem of estimating diffusion coefficients in multi - component systems. Specifically, the traditional Onsager formalism has mathematical complexity when dealing with systems with more than three components, making it impossible to estimate meaningful diffusion coefficients by conventional methods. In addition, other alternative methods can only estimate the average diffusion coefficients within a specific composition range and lack physical significance. ### Main problems and challenges of the paper 1. **Mathematical complexity**: - In multi - component systems, calculating diffusion coefficients using the Onsager formalism involves complex mathematical operations, especially in cases with more than three components. - Traditional methods are difficult to handle these complexities, resulting in the inability to obtain meaningful results. 2. **Experimental difficulty**: - In quaternary or higher - order systems, it is almost impossible to estimate composition - dependent diffusion coefficients by traditional methods because different diffusion paths will lead to different results. - Other alternative methods (such as the method proposed by Dayananda and Sohn) can only provide average diffusion coefficients, and these values depend on the selected composition range, so they lack universal applicability and physical significance. ### Proposed solutions To overcome the above difficulties, the author proposes a pseudo - ternary diffusion couple technique. This method simplifies the mathematical complexity of the Onsager formalism, making it possible to estimate composition - dependent diffusion coefficients in multi - component systems. The specific steps are as follows: 1. **Select fixed components**: - In a multi - component system, select certain components to remain constant and only allow three components to generate diffusion profiles. For example, in the Ni - Co - Fe - Mo quaternary system, keep the Mo content unchanged. 2. **Establish diffusion couples**: - Prepare two diffusion couples so that they intersect at a specific composition, so that the diffusion coefficient can be estimated at this composition. - By adjusting the initial alloy composition, ensure that the selected components remain constant throughout the diffusion couple. 3. **Data processing and analysis**: - Redraw the experimentally measured composition profiles as corrected composition profiles and find the intersection point on the Gibb triangle. - Use the corrected composition profiles to estimate the diffusion flux and diffusion coefficient. ### Advantages of the method 1. **Composition - dependent diffusion coefficients**: - It is possible to estimate the composition - dependent main diffusion coefficients and cross - diffusion coefficients, not just the average values. 2. **Clear physical significance**: - The estimated diffusion coefficients have a clear physical significance and can better understand the microstructural evolution and physicochemical properties of materials. 3. **Easy to implement**: - The relatively simple experimental steps enable graduate students and engineers to easily apply this method for research. ### Conclusion The pseudo - ternary diffusion couple technique proposed in this paper successfully solves the difficult problem of estimating diffusion coefficients in multi - component systems and provides a simple and effective method to obtain composition - dependent diffusion coefficients, which is of great significance for industrial applications and academic research.
