Abstract:An asymptotic expansion is performed to obtain quasi-axisymmetric magnetic configurations that are weakly non-axisymmetric. A large space of solutions is identified, which satisfy the condition of quasi-axisymmetry on a single magnetic flux surface, while (non-axisymmetric) globally quasi-axisymmetric solutions are shown to not exist, agreeing with the conclusions of previous theoretical work. The solutions found are shown to be geometrically constrained at low aspect ratio or high toroidal period number. Solutions satisfying the more general condition of omnigeneity (generalized quasi-axisymmetry) are also shown to exist, and it is found that quasi-axisymmetric deformations can be superposed with an omnigenous solution, while preserving the property of omnigeneity, effectively extending the space of "good" configurations. A numerical solution of the first order quasi-axisymmetry problem is demonstrated and compared with solutions found with a widely used MHD equilibrium solver, independently verifying that quasi-axisymmetry is satisfied at the appropriate order. It is thereby demonstrated that approximately quasi-axisymmetric solutions can be directly constructed, i.e. without using numerical search algorithms.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to construct the magnetic field configuration in a magnetically confined fusion device under the condition of quasi - axisymmetry (QAS) in the case of weak non - axisymmetry. Specifically, through the method of asymptotic expansion, the author explored the existence and characteristics of the magnetic field configuration satisfying the QAS condition on a single magnetic flux surface, and further studied the relationship between these configurations and the more general "Omnigeneity" solutions. The following are the main research questions of the paper: 1. **Existence of QAS magnetic field configuration**: - The paper first explored whether a magnetic field configuration satisfying the QAS condition can be constructed under the condition of weak non - axisymmetry. Through the method of asymptotic expansion, the author proved that the QAS condition can be satisfied on a single magnetic flux surface, but the global QAS configuration does not exist. 2. **Characteristics of QAS magnetic field configuration**: - The author analyzed in detail the geometric limitations of the QAS magnetic field configuration, especially in the case of low aspect ratio or high toroidal period number. They found that the QAS deformation can be superimposed on the Omnigeneity solution while maintaining Omnigeneity, thus expanding the space of "good" configurations. 3. **Numerical method verification**: - The paper provided a numerical method to explicitly find the QAS solution and compared it with the results of widely used MHD equilibrium solvers (such as VMEC), independently verifying the satisfaction of the QAS condition at an appropriate order. 4. **Omnigeneity**: - The author also studied the magnetic field configuration satisfying the Omnigeneity condition, which is a more general condition ensuring good confinement of particle orbits. They found that the Omnigeneity condition can be satisfied by adjusting the magnetic field strength \( E_1(\theta, \phi) \), thus providing a new way to optimize the magnetic field configuration. ### Specific problem decomposition 1. **Asymptotic expansion method**: - The author used a small parameter \( \epsilon \) for asymptotic expansion to study the transition process from axisymmetry to non - axisymmetry. They derived the magnetostatic equations at different orders and analyzed the solutions of these equations. 2. **Mathematical expression of QAS condition**: - The QAS condition is expressed as a simple differential constraint, that is, \( \frac{\partial E}{\partial \phi} = 0 \), where \( E = g_{33}+2\iota' g_{23}+(\iota')^2 g_{22} \). The author proved that this condition can be satisfied on a single magnetic flux surface but cannot be globally satisfied in the entire volume. 3. **Geometric limitations**: - The author found that in the case of low aspect ratio or high toroidal period number, the QAS solution is subject to geometric limitations. These limitations are of great significance for the design of QAS devices. 4. **Numerical solution method**: - The author used the finite element method (FEM) to solve the partial differential equations under the QAS condition and showed specific numerical results. These results were compared with the solutions of the VMEC solver to verify the effectiveness of the QAS condition. 5. **Omnigeneity condition**: - The author discussed how to introduce arbitrary modifications in the magnetic field strength \( E_1(\theta, \phi) \) to satisfy the Omnigeneity condition. This provides a new idea for optimizing the magnetic field configuration. ### Summary This paper systematically studied the existence and characteristics of the magnetic field configuration satisfying the QAS condition under the condition of weak non - axisymmetry through the asymptotic expansion method, and provided a numerical method for verification. In addition, the author also explored the relationship between these configurations and the more general Omnigeneity solutions, providing a theoretical basis and practical method for optimizing the magnetic field configuration.
