Abstract:Consider a finite sequence of independent random permutations, chosen uniformly either among all permutations or among all matchings on n points. We show that, in probability, as n goes to infinity, these permutations viewed as operators on the (n-1) dimensional vector space orthogonal to the vector with all coordinates equal to 1, are asymptotically strongly free. Our proof relies on the development of a matrix version of the non-backtracking operator theory and a refined trace method. As a byproduct, we show that the non-trivial eigenvalues of random n-lifts of a fixed based graphs approximately achieve the Alon-Boppana bound with high probability in the large n limit. This result generalizes Friedman's Theorem stating that with high probability, the Schreier graph generated by a finite number of independent random permutations is close to Ramanujan. Finally, we extend our results to tensor products of random permutation matrices. This extension is especially relevant in the context of quantum expanders.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on random permutation matrices and their spectral properties in high - dimensional cases. Specifically, the authors are concerned with the asymptotic freeness of a set of independent random permutations (which can be uniformly chosen from all permutations or uniformly chosen from all matchings) acting as operators on an \(n - 1\)-dimensional vector space as \(n\) tends to infinity. This vector space is defined as \(\{(x_1,\ldots,x_n)\in\mathbb{C}^n\mid\sum_{i = 1}^n x_i=0\}\). ### Main research questions: 1. **Asymptotic strong freeness**: Prove that these random permutation operators are asymptotically strongly free in probability. This means that as \(n\) increases, the behavior of non - commutative polynomials between these permutation operators is similar to the behavior of free elements in free probability theory. 2. **Eigenvalues of random lifted graphs**: As a by - product, prove that the non - trivial eigenvalues of random \(n\)-lifted graphs almost reach the Alon - Boppana lower bound in the large \(n\) limit. This generalizes Friedman's theorem that the Schreier graph generated by a finite number of independent random permutations is close to a Ramanujan graph. 3. **Extension of tensor products**: Extend the results to tensor products of random permutation matrices, and this extension is particularly relevant in the context of quantum expanders. ### Specific problem descriptions: - **Spectrum of linear combinations**: Study the spectral properties of the operator \(A = a_0\otimes1+\sum_{i = 1}^d a_i\otimes S_i\), where \(S_i\) are permutation operators and \(a_i\) are matrix coefficients. - **Non - backtracking operators**: Introduce a matrix version of the non - backtracking operator theory and use refined trace methods to analyze the spectral properties of these operators. - **Spectral inclusion relations**: Prove that in probability, as \(n\) tends to infinity, the Hausdorff distance between the spectrum of the operator \(A\) and the spectrum of the limit operator \(A^{\star}\) converges to 0. - **Strong asymptotic freeness**: Prove that the permutation operators restricted on \(1_I^{\perp}\) are asymptotically strongly free, which means that their spectral properties have strong consistency in the large \(n\) limit. ### Main contributions: - **Proof of asymptotic freeness**: By developing new methods in the non - backtracking operator theory, prove the asymptotic strong freeness of random permutation operators. - **Exact description of spectral properties**: Give an exact description of the eigenvalues of random \(n\)-lifted graphs and verify the achievement of the Alon - Boppana lower bound. - **Extension of tensor products**: Extend the results to tensor products of random permutation matrices, providing new tools for the study of quantum expanders. In conclusion, through in - depth research on the spectral properties of random permutation matrices, this paper provides an important theoretical basis for understanding the properties of large - scale random graphs and quantum expanders.
