Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. Consider orbits [math] of the fractal iterator [math], [math], that start at initial points [math], where [math] is the set of all rational complex numbers (their real and imaginary parts are rational) and [math] consists of all such [math] whose complexity does not exceed some complexity parameter value [math] (the complexity of [math] is defined as the number of bits that suffice to describe the real and imaginary parts of [math] in lowest form). The set [math] is a bounded-complexity approximation of the filled Julia set [math]. We present a new perspective on fractals based on an analogy with Chaitin's algorithmic information theory, where a rational complex number [math] is the analog of a program [math], an iterator [math] is analogous to a universal Turing machine [math] which executes program [math], and an unbounded orbit [math] is analogous to an execution of a program [math] on [math] that halts. We define a real number [math] which resembles Chaitin's [math] number, where, instead of being based on all programs [math] whose execution on [math] halts, it is based on all rational complex numbers [math] whose orbits under [math] are unbounded. Hence, similar to Chaitin's [math] number, [math] acts as a theoretical limit or a "fractal oracle number" that provides an arbitrarily accurate complexity-based approximation of the filled Julia set [math]. We present a procedure that, when given [math] and [math], it uses [math] to generate [math]. Several numerical examples of sets that estimate [math] are presented.

Abstract:Several specific Franklin squares and magic squares are decomposed into their quotient and remainder squares. The results support the conjecture that Franklin used the Eulerian composition method to construct many of his squares. This method also can be used to construct new Franklin squares as illustrated herein.

Abstract:The aim of this expository article is twofold. The first is to introduce several polynomials of one variable as well as two variables defined on the positive integers with values as congruent numbers. The second is to present connections between Pythagorean triples and the Pell equation $x^2-dy^2=1$ plus its analogous counterpart $x^2-dy^2=-1$ which give rise to congruent numbers n with arbitrarily many prime factors.

Abstract:Let $ q $ be a sufficiently large odd integer, and let $ c \in\left(1, \frac{4}{3}\right) $. We denote $ R(c; q) $ as the count of square-free numbers in the intersection of the Lehmer set and the Piatetski-Shapiro sequence. By employing additive character properties to transform congruence equations and applying Kloosterman sums and methods of exponential sums, we derive a sharp asymptotic formula as $ q $ approaches infinity, which is significant for understanding the distribution properties of the Lehmer problem.

Abstract:We construct a version of Lagrangian Floer homology whose chain complex is generated by the inscriptions of a rectangle into a real analytic Jordan curve. By using its associated spectral invariants, we establish that a rectifiable Jordan curve admits inscriptions of a whole interval of rectangles. In particular, it inscribes a square if the area it encloses is more than half that of a circle of equal diameter.

Abstract:We show that there always exists an inscribed square in a Jordan curve given as the union of two graphs of functions of Lipschitz constant less than $1 + \sqrt{2}$. We are motivated by Tao's result that there exists such a square in the case of Lipschitz constant less than $1$. In the case of Lipschitz constant $1$, we show that the Jordan curve inscribes rectangles of every similarity class. Our approach involves analysing the change in the spectral invariants of the Jordan Floer homology under perturbations of the Jordan curve.

Integers expressible as the sum of two rational cubes

Abstract:We prove that a positive proportion of integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not so expressible, thus proving a conjecture of Davenport. More generally, we prove that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family have rank 0, and a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves with good reduction at 2 in any cubic twist family have rank 1. Our method involves proving that the average size of the 2-Selmer group of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family, having any given root number, is 3. We accomplish this by generalizing a parametrization, due to the second author and Ho, of elliptic curves with extra structure by pairs of binary cubic forms. We then use a novel combination of geometry-of-numbers methods and the circle method that builds on earlier work of Ruth and the first author. In particular, we make use of a new interpretation of the singular integral and series arising in the circle method in terms of real and $p$-adic Haar measures on the relevant group. We prove a uniformity estimate for integral points on the relevant quadric, which along with a sieve allows us to prove that the average size of the 2-Selmer group over the cubic twist family is 3. By suitably partitioning the subset of curves in the family with given root number, we effect a further sieve to show that the root number is equidistributed and that the same average, now taken over only those curves of given root number, is again 3. Finally, we apply the $p$-parity theorem of Dokchitser-Dokchitser and a $p$-converse theorem of Burungale-Skinner to conclude. We also prove the analogue of the above results for the sequence of square numbers: namely, we prove that a positive proportion of square integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not.

Abstract:The two squares theorem of Fermat is a gem in number theory, with a spectacular one-sentence "proof from the Book". Here is a formalisation of this proof, with an interpretation using windmill patterns. The theory behind involves involutions on a finite set, especially the parity of the number of fixed points in the involutions. Starting as an existence proof that is non-constructive, there is an ingenious way to turn it into a constructive one. This gives an algorithm to compute the two squares by iterating the two involutions alternatively from a known fixed point.

Abstract:By juxtaposing ideas from fractal geometry and dynamical systems, Furstenberg proposed a series of conjectures in the late 1960's that explore the relationship between digit expansions with respect to multiplicatively independent bases. In this work, we introduce and study — in the discrete context of the integers — analogs of some of the notions and results surrounding Furstenberg's work. In particular, we define a new class of fractal sets of integers that parallels the notion of ×r ‐invariant sets on the 1‐torus and investigate the additive and geometric independence between two such fractal sets when they are structured with respect to multiplicatively independent bases. Our main results in this direction parallel the works of Furstenberg, Hochman–Shmerkin, Shmerkin, Wu, and Lindenstrauss–Meiri–Peres and include: a classification of all subsets of the positive integers that are simultaneously ×r ‐ and ×s ‐invariant; integer analogs of two of Furstenberg's transversality conjectures pertaining to the dimensions of the intersection A∩B and the sumset A+B of ×r ‐ and ×s ‐invariant sets A and B when r and s are multiplicatively independent; and a description of the dimension of iterated sumsets A+A+⋯+A for any ×r ‐invariant set A . We achieve these results by combining ideas from fractal geometry and ergodic theory to build a bridge between the continuous and discrete regimes. For the transversality results, we rely heavily on quantitative bounds on the Lq ‐dimensions of projections of restricted digit Cantor measures obtained recently by Shmerkin. We end by outlining a number of open questions and directions regarding fractal subsets of the integers.

Abstract:We prove an effective estimate with a power saving error term for the number of square-tiled surfaces in a connected component of a stratum of quadratic differentials whose vertical and horizontal foliations belong to prescribed mapping class group orbits and which have at most L squares. This result strengthens asymptotic counting formulas in the work of Delecroix, Goujard, Zograf, Zorich, and the author.

Abstract:It is well known that there is a somewhat mysterious relation between the area of the quartic Fermat curve $x^4+y^4=1$, aka squircle, and the arc length of the lemniscate $(x^2+y^2)^2=x^2-y^2$. The standardproof of this fact uses relations between elliptic integrals and the gamma function. In this article we generalize this result to relate areas of sectors of the squircle to arc lengths of segments of the lemniscate. We provide a geometric interpretation of this relation and an elementary proof of the relation, which only uses basic integral calculus.

Abstract:Given a lattice polytope $P$ and a prime $p$, we define a function from the set of primitive symplectic $p$-adic lattices to the rationals that extracts the $\ell$th coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomial of $P$ relative to the given lattice. Inspired by work of Gunnells and Rodriguez-Villegas in type $\mathsf{A}$, we show that these functions are eigenfunctions of a suitably defined action of the spherical symplectic Hecke algebra. Although they depend significantly on the polytope $P$, their eigenvalues are independent of $P$ and expressed as polynomials in $p$. We define local zeta functions that enumerate the values of these Hecke eigenfunctions on the vertices of the affine Bruhat--Tits buildings associated with $p$-adic symplectic groups. We compute these zeta functions by enumerating $p$-adic lattices by their elementary divisors and, simultaneously, one Hermite parameter. We report on a general functional equation satisfied by these local zeta functions, confirming a conjecture of Vankov.
