Abstract:Suicide is the leading cause of violent death in the United States with the rates being significantly higher among males. Gender differences in the presentation of depression may lead to an underrecognition of depression and thus suicide risk among males. The present study investigated whether a measure of male depression symptoms was associated with suicide risk and whether this relationship was moderated by gender. Participants were 944 community-dwelling adults from the United States recruited from Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Male depression symptoms were measured by the Male Depression Risk Scale. Suicide risk was measured by the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised. Males had higher levels of male depression than females, but similar levels of conventional depression symptomology. Male depression was significantly associated with suicide risk independent of conventional depression symptoms. Gender moderated this relationship, with suicide risk being greater for females with high levels of male depression symptoms. The types of male depression symptoms conveying the greatest risk were emotional suppression, alcohol use (in females only), somatic symptoms, and risk-taking behaviors. Assessing for and addressing symptoms of male depression in treatment may help to reduce suicide risk among both males and females.
Gender Differences in Suicidal Risk Factors among Individuals with Mood Disorders

Abstract:1.1 Objective: Suicide is a leading cause of death, especially for individuals who have a diagnosed mood disorder. There is conflicting evidence regarding factors that may heighten risk for suicide and whether they differ for men and women. The aims of this study were to identify the degree to which gender influences suicide risk among patients with mood disorders, or moderates the effects of other demographic and clinical suicide risk factors. 1.2 Methods: The sample included 268 women and 154 men who were part of a geographically diverse, multi-center registry of the National Network of Depression Centers. Measures of depression, anxiety, childhood adversity, psychiatric diagnosis, living arrangement and employment status were analyzed, along with gender, to determine their association with suicidal risk. 1.3 Results: Multiple regression analysis indicated that men had greater suicide risk than women. In addition, factors that predicted suicide risk differed by gender. Childhood adversity was more strongly associated with suicide risk for women (beta = .22, p < .000) than for men (beta = .04, NS) while anxiety predicted suicide risk for men (beta = .25, p < .000) but not for women (beta = .05, NS). Severity of depression was the primary predictor for both sexes (beta = .79, p < .000). Specific mood diagnosis, living arrangement and employment status did not predict suicide risk. 1.4 Conclusions: Findings indicate the importance of regularly assessing severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms, with attention to anxiety as a key factor that may heighten suicide risk for men. Results suggest a profound role for early cumulative trauma in exacerbating later suicide risk for women, indicating a need to also screen for childhood adversity. Further research is warranted to identify the gender-specific effect of different adversities and types of anxiety in development of suicidal ideation and suicide completion.
Gender differences in suicide among patients with bipolar disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective To examine gender differences in suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide deaths in patients with bipolar disorder. Methods PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were systematic searched from inception to March 7, 2023. Two reviewers extract data independently. Demographic data, the number of males and females with bipolar disorder, and the number of individuals with suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide deaths among participants were extracted. Results The pooled prevalence of suicidal ideation in males and females was 48.0 % and 44.0 %, respectively, and the overall male-to-female ratios present a statistically insignificant result (OR = 0.95, 95%CI = 0.75–1.21) among patients with bipolar disorder. The pooled prevalence of suicide attempts in males and females was 6.7 % and 9.3 %, respectively, and there was a statistically significant lower prevalence among male patients with bipolar disorder (OR = 0.71, 95%CI = 0.67–0.75). However, the pooled prevalence of suicide deaths in males and females was 0.7 % and 0.3 % respectively, and there was a statistically significant higher prevalence among male patients with bipolar disorder (OR = 1.86, 95%CI = 1.63–2.13). Limitations The included studies were from mainly middle- and high-income countries and used inconsistent measurement tools. Thus, there is a potential for bias in our results. Conclusions Among patients with bipolar disorder, females were found to have a higher prevalence of suicide attempts, while males have a higher prevalence of suicide deaths. However, there is no significant gender difference in suicidal ideation. Efforts to optimize recognition, treatment, and administration in males and females may reduce gender differences.

Abstract:In the current cross-sectional study, we aimed to investigate the presence and severity of "male" depressive symptoms and suicidal behaviors in psychiatric patients with and without a history of child abuse and neglect, as measured by the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), as well as to explore the associations among childhood maltreatment, "male depression" and suicide risk. The sample consisted of 163 consecutively admitted adult inpatients (80 men; 83 women). The patients were administered the CTQ, Gotland Male Depression Scale (GMDS), and Suicidal History Self-Rating Screening Scale (SHSS). Those with a moderate-severe childhood maltreatment history were more likely to be female (p<0.05) and reported more "male depression" (p<0.001) and suicidal behaviors (p<0.01) as compared to those not having or having a minimal history of child abuse and neglect. In the multivariate analysis, only the minimization/denial scale of the CTQ (odds ratio=0.31; p<0.001) and "male depression" (odds ratio=1.83; p<0.05) were independently associated with moderate/severe history of child maltreatment. The findings suggest that exposure to abuse and neglect as a child may increase the risk of subsequent symptoms of "male depression", which has been associated with higher suicidal risk.

Abstract:Abstract Background The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation and gender differences between cognition and suicidal tendency in patients with schizophrenia. Methods A total of 554 patients with schizophrenia were recruited. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were used to assess clinical symptoms. Results In male patients, MMSE score and the incidence of suicidal tendency were correlated (P = 0.04, OR = 1.06, 95%CI: 1.00–1.12). Among patients with cognitive dysfunction, IRI score (P = 0.01, OR = 1.04, 95%CI: 1.01–1.06), and types of antipsychotic drugs (P < 0.01, OR = 3.97, 95%CI: 1.76–8.97) in male patients were associated risk factors for suicidal ideation. Among patients without cognitive dysfunction, PANSS positive subscale score (P = 0.03, OR = 1.06, 95%CI: 1.01–1.11), and PANSS general psychopathology score (P = 0.02, OR = 1.05, 95%CI: 1.01–1.08) were associated risk factors for suicidal ideation in male patients and PANSS positive subscale score (P < 0.01, OR = 1.15, 95%CI: 1.05–1.26) were associated risk factors for suicidal ideation in female patients. Conclusions There were significant gender differences in the correlation between cognitive functioning and suicidal ideation in patients with schizophrenia. Cognitive function may play an important mediating role in other factors on suicide.

Abstract:Background: Suicide constitutes a significant global health concern. Joiner's interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide focuses on three variables: Thwarted Belongingness (TB), Perceived Burdensomeness (PB) and Acquired Capability for Suicide. Methods: A sample of 90 psychiatric patients, comprising outpatients, inpatients and individuals residing in therapeutic communities, was recruited between 2021 and 2022. Scales measuring anxiety, depression, mental pain, reasons for living, TB, PB and fearlessness about death were administered. Patients with and without suicidal ideation (SI), as well as those with and without history of suicide attempt (SA) were compared and two stepwise logistic regression models were performed. Results: Both patients with SI and with SA had higher anxiety, depression, mental pain, PB, fearlessness about death and lower self-esteem. Notably, depression, PB and beliefs about coping strategies were strongly associated with SI, while higher fearlessness about death and PB were strongly linked to history of SA. Additionally, inpatients and therapeutic community patients were at higher risk of suicide and had higher levels of depression compared to outpatients. Limitations: The small sample size and the inclusion of patients with mixed psychiatric diagnoses limit the generalizability of the findings. The cross-sectional design hinders causal hypotheses about the relationship between current SI or past SA and potential risk factors. The use of self-report measures entails biases. The analyses did not include details about pharmacological treatments. Conclusions: SA history could be explained by fearlessness about death. Improving the ability to cope with suicidal thoughts constitutes a pivotal component of therapeutic interventions with suicidal patients.
Suicidal ideation among prisoners: analysis with a gender perspective in a five-year follow-up (2017-2022)

Abstract:Introduction: There is a high incidence of self-harming behavior in the prison setting, with a suicide rate that is higher than that of the general population. Previous studies describe the association of sociodemographic, clinical, and criminological factors with the risk of suicide in the male prison population, but there is little research that specifically analyses suicidal behavior among women. The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics of inmates who are admitted to a psychiatric unit for suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide. Material and method: Descriptive and comparative analysis of 97 inmates (68 men, 29 women) admitted to the Unidad de Hospitalización Psiquiátrica Penitenciaria de Cataluña (UHPP-C), for suicidal ideation, between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2022. Results: There are differences in terms of place of birth, with a more significant presence of African nationalities in non-national males, while foreign inmates tend to come from Latin American countries. Men have a lower mean age, longer admissions, and a higher readmission rate. They also suffer from more psychotic and addictive disorders. Women have a higher prevalence of personality disorders and affective symptoms. Conclusions: There are sociodemographic and clinical differences between male and female prison inmates who require admission for suicidal ideation. Including a gender perspective in studies on suicide risk in the prison population can provide a solid foundation for future studies, thus allowing a more complete understanding of suicidal ideation and intervention needs in the prison population.
Gender Differences in Prevalence and Associations Between Cognitive Symptoms and Suicidal Ideation in Patients with Recurrent Major Depressive Disorder: Findings from the Chinese NSSD Study

Abstract:Background This study aimed to explore gender differences in associations between cognitive symptoms and suicidal ideation (SI) among patients with recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods We recruited 1222 patients with recurrent MDD from the National Survey on Symptomatology of Depression (NSSD), a survey designed to investigate the symptoms experienced during current major depressive episodes in China. A four-point Likert questionnaire was used to assess the frequency of cognitive symptoms and SI in the past two weeks. Results Gender differences in clinical features and cognitive symptoms of participants with recurrent MDD were found. Specifically, male patients had a higher prevalence of memory loss, decreased verbal output, indecisiveness, and impaired interpersonal relationships, while female patients exhibited a higher prevalence of impaired social and occupational functioning (all P < 0.05). No significant difference in SI prevalence was found between male and female patients. The logistic regression analysis revealed that in male patients, SI was associated with indecisiveness and impaired interpersonal relationships. In female patients, reduced verbal output and impaired social and professional functions were also associated with SI in addition to the above-mentioned variables. Conclusion The findings of gender differences in associations between cognitive symptoms and SI highlight the need to carefully assess gender-specific cognitive predictors of SI in patients with recurrent MDD. This has further implications for more targeted prevention and treatment strategies for SI based on gender.

Abstract:Introduction Men have an increased risk to die by suicide compared to women but are underrepresented in suicide research. To improve individual risk prediction for suicide‐related thoughts and behaviors (STBs), risk factors are increasingly being studied at an individual level. The possible affect‐regulatory function of suicidal ideation has hardly been investigated ideographically and has not yet been tested in a male sample. Methods We investigated the bidirectional associations between suicidal ideation and negative and positive affect in a sample of n = 21 male inpatients with unipolar depression and a history of suicidal ideation both at the group level and at the individual level. Participants underwent an intensive ecological momentary assessment for 6 days with 10 data points per day. Results We found no evidence for an affect‐regulatory function of suicidal ideation at the group level, neither for effects of affect on subsequent suicidal ideation (antecedent affect‐regulatory hypothesis) nor for effects of suicidal ideation on subsequent affect (consequence affect‐regulatory hypothesis). Person‐specific analyses revealed substantial variability in strength and direction of the considered associations, especially for the associations representing the antecedent hypothesis. Conclusion The demonstrated between‐person heterogeneity points to the necessity to individualize the investigation of risk factors to enhance prediction and prevention of STBs.

Abstract:Background: Severe mental disorders that require hospitalization are disabling conditions that contribute to the burden of mental diseases. They pose increased clinical challenges and highlight the need to thoroughly explore variables emerging from daily clinical practice. In this study, we assessed to what extent gender differences may characterize a large population of psychiatric inpatients. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 2 Italian teaching medical centers, which included 2358 patients who were consecutively admitted to the psychiatric emergency units. We explored and characterized gender differences for variables such as prevalence of psychiatric diagnosis, presence of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, age at onset of psychiatric illness, presence of substance or alcohol abuse, length of stay, number of hospitalizations, presence of involuntary admission, type of discharge from the hospital, and pharmacological treatment at discharge. Results: Female patients were primarily diagnosed with bipolar disorder or personality disorders. Female patients had a significantly higher prevalence of lifetime suicide attempts (23.1% vs. 16.5%, P <0.001) and a longer length of hospitalization (11.43±10.73 d vs. 10.52±10.37 d, t =–2.099, gl=2356, P =0.036) compared with male patients. Male patients had more involuntary admissions (25.1% vs. 19.7%, χ 2 =9.616, gl=1, P =0.002), more use of illicit substances (34.1% vs. 20.9%, χ 2 =51.084, gl=1, P <0.001), and higher rates of alcohol abuse (21.3% vs. 14.7%, χ 2 =17.182, gl=1, P <0.001) compared with female patients. Finally, antidepressants and lithium were prescribed more frequently to the female patients, whereas other mood stabilizers were more often prescribed to the male patients. Conclusions: Our real-world results highlighted gender differences among patients with severe mental disorders admitted to psychiatric units, and suggest further investigations that may help in understanding trajectories accompanying disabling clinical conditions.

Abstract:Suicide is a significant leading cause of death among young people, particularly those struggling with mental disorders. The present study utilised data from 230 young people (aged 16–18 years) undergoing a transitional care process from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services to Adult Mental Health Services within the MILESTONE European project (2014–2019), a longitudinal cluster randomised controlled trial. The objectives of this study were to monitor temporal patterns of general health and social functioning over two years, to detect sex differences, and to identify factors associated with Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours (STB) at the first and last time points. The results demonstrate a decrease in STB over the two-year follow-up period among all participants. Females exhibited a higher prevalence of STB across all time points, whereas males only exhibited STB at the nine-month follow-up. The most influential factors associated with STB were previous suicide attempts and mood disorders at baseline, and mood disorders and relational problems at the end of follow-up. These findings emphasise the importance of monitoring STB and informing young people undergoing a transitional care period about its key risk factors. Moreover, sex differences in STB suggest the need for different preventive strategies for males and females.

Gender commonalities and differences in risk and protective factors of suicidal thoughts and behaviors: A cross-sectional study of Spanish university students

Abstract:Aim: To assess gender differences in the association between risk/protective factors and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB); and whether there is any gender-interaction with those factors and STB; among Spanish university students. Methods: Data from baseline online survey of UNIVERSAL project, a multicenter, observational study of first-year Spanish university students (18-24 years). We assessed STB; lifetime and 12-month negative life-events and family adversities; mental disorders; personal and community factors. Gender-specific regression models and gender-interactions were also analyzed. Results: We included 2,105 students, 55.4% women. Twelve-month prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI) was 10%, plans 5.7%, attempts 0.6%. Statistically significant gender-interactions were found for lifetime anxiety disorder, hopelessness, violence between parents, chronic health conditions and family support. Lifetime mood disorder was a common risk factor of SI for both genders (Females: OR= 5.5; 95%CI 3.3-9.3; Males: OR= 4.4; 95%CI 2.0-9.7). For females, exposure to violence between parents (OR= 3.5; 95%CI 1.7-7.2), anxiety disorder (OR= 2.7; 95%CI 1.6-4.6), and alcohol/substance disorder (OR= 2.1; 95%CI 1.1-4.3); and for males, physical childhood maltreatment (OR= 3.6; 95%CI 1.4-9.2), deceased parents (OR= 4.6; 95%CI 1.2-17.7), and hopelessness (OR= 7.7; 95%CI 2.8-21.2), increased SI risk. Family support (OR= 0.5; 95%CI 0.2-0.9) and peers/others support (OR= 0.4; 95%CI 0.2-0.8) were associated to a lower SI risk only among females. Conclusions: Only mood disorder was a common risk factor of SI for both genders, whereas important gender-differences were observed regarding the other factors assessed. The protective effect from family and peers/others support was observed only among females. Further research assessing underlying mechanisms and pathways of gender-differences is needed.
Prevalence of Suicidal Ideation and Planning in Patients with Major Depressive Disorder: A Meta-Analysis of Observation Studies.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide planning (SP) are associated with an increased risk of future suicide. We performed a meta-analysis of observational studies to estimate the prevalence of SI and SP in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and its associated factors.METHODS:A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO and Web of Science from their commencement date until 7 October 2020. Original studies containing data on the prevalence of SI and SP in individuals with MDD were analyzed.RESULTS:Forty-six articles covering 53,598 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The overall prevalence of SI was 37.7% (95% confidence interval (CI): 32.3-43.4%) and the pooled prevalence of SP was 15.1% (95% CI: 8.0--26.8%). Subgroup analyses revealed that the timeframe over which SI was assessed, source of patients, study design, and diagnostic criteria were significantly associated with the pooled prevalence of SI. Meta-regression analyses revealed that the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) score and percentage of male participants were positively associated with the pooled prevalence of SI. Study quality and mean age were negatively associated with the pooled prevalence of SI. In contrast, survey year and study quality were negatively associated with pooled prevalence of SP LIMITATION: SI and SP were self-reported and subject to recall bias and impression management.CONCLUSIONS:SI and SP are common in patients with MDD, especially among inpatients. Preventive measures and treatments focusing on factors associated with SI and SP may reduce the risk of suicide in patients with MDD.
Gender differences in suicidal behavior in adolescents and young adults: systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies

Random effect meta-analyses were performed.ResultsSixty-seven studies were included. Females presented higher risk of suicide attempt (OR 1.96, 95% CI 1.54–2.50), and males for suicide death (HR 2.50, 95% CI 1.8–3.6). Common risk factors of suicidal behaviors for both genders are previous mental or substance abuse disorder and exposure to interpersonal violence. Female-specific risk factors for suicide attempts are eating disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, being victim of dating violence, depressive symptoms, interpersonal problems and previous abortion. Male-specific risk factors for suicide attempt are disruptive behavior/conduct problems, hopelessness, parental separation/divorce, friend’s suicidal behavior, and access to means. Male-specific risk factors for suicide death are drug abuse, externalizing disorders, and access to means. For females, no risk factors for suicide death were studied.ConclusionsMore evidence about female-specific risk/protective factors of suicide death, for adolescent/young adults, is needed.

Neurological, Metabolic, and Psychopathological Correlates of Lifetime Suicidal Behaviour in Major Depressive Disorder without Current Suicide Ideation

Abstract:Introduction: Suicidal behaviour (SB) has a complex aetiology. Although suicidal ideation (SI) is considered the most important risk factor for future attempts, many people who engage in SB do not report it. Methods: We investigated neurological, metabolic, and psychopathological correlates of lifetime SB in two independent groups of patients with major depression (sample 1: n = 230; age: 18–65 years; sample 2: n = 258; age >60 years) who did not report SI during an index episode. Results: Among adults (sample 1), SB was reported by 141 subjects (58.7%) and severe SB by 33 (15%). After controlling for interactions, four risk factors for SB emerged: male gender (OR 2.55; 95% CI: 1.06–6.12), negative self-perception (OR 1.76; 95% CI: 1.08–2.87), subthreshold hypomania (OR 4.50; 95% CI: 1.57–12.85), and sexual abuse (OR 3.09; 95% CI: 1.28–7.48). The presence of at least two of these factors had the best accuracy in predicting SB: sensitivity = 57.6% (39.2–74.5); specificity = 75.1% (68.5–82.0); PPV = 27.9% (20.9–37.2); NPV = 91.4% (87.6–94.1). In older patients (sample 2), 23 subjects (9%) reported previous suicide attempts, which were characterized by earlier onset (25 years: OR 0.95: 0.92–0.98), impaired verbal performance (verbal fluency: OR 0.95: 0.89–0.99), higher HDL cholesterol levels (OR 1.04: 1.00–1.07) and more dyskinesias (OR 2.86: 1.22–6.70). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that SB is common in major depressive disorder, even when SI is not reported. In these individuals it is feasible and recommended to investigate both psychiatric and organic risk factors. The predictive power of models excluding SI is comparable to that of models including SI.

Abstract:This study investigated whether personality traits, psychopathological characteristics, and sociodemographic factors in depressed patients differentiate patients with only suicidal thoughts from those who have attempted suicide. We investigated two groups of patients with an affective disorder: 198 patients with a suicide attempt within the last 3 months (sex ratio male to female, 1:1.3; mean age male to female, 44.8/44.7 years) and 30 patients without a suicide attempt but with suicidal thoughts (sex ratio male to female, 1:2; mean age male to female, 39.4/42.6 years) using a comprehensive measurement (Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview, Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-4 Axis II disorders, Hamilton Depression Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Clinical Global Impression Scale, Beck-Hopelessness Scale, Scale for Suicide Ideation, Impulsivity Rating Scale, Barratt Impulsivity Scale, Inventory for the Assessment of Aggression Factors, State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, Ways of Coping Checklist). Several differences distinguished the two groups, namely, in personality traits such as anxiety or coping strategies and sociodemographics (e.g., education level). Personality traits, psychopathological characteristics, and sociodemographic factors are useful tools for assessing suicidal risk. Our findings encourage us to suggest that clinicians pay particular attention to sociodemographic variables such as separation/divorce and a lower education level when conducting risk assessments on suicidal patients.

Abstract:Our prospective Zurich study (1978-2008) found that suicidal ideation had occurred in 40.5 % and suicide attempts in 6.6 % of the population by age 50. Important gender differences were found in both suicidality and its risk factors. Suicide attempts were earlier and more frequent among women than among men: 70 versus 44 % reported their first suicide attempt before 20. For women, the relative risk of suicide attempts was 1.6, but the relative risk of suicidal ideation was about equal (1.1 for women). The main risk factors for suicidal ideation in women were low social support (OR 4.0) and frequent punishment in childhood (OR 3.7), and in men, a depressive (OR 6.5) and an anxious personality (OR 4.6). The main risk factors for suicide attempts in women were a broken home (OR 10.2) and sexual abuse/violence (OR 7.9) in childhood; in men, no multivariate analyses of suicide attempt were conducted because of insufficient statistical power.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Precise knowledge of the epidemiology of suicidality provides necessary information for designing prevention programs. The aims of the present study were to investigate the prevalence and correlates of suicidal ideas and attempts in the general population of Europe. METHODS The European Study on the Epidemiology of Mental Disorders (ESEMED) is a cross-sectional household survey carried out in a probability representative sample of non-institutionalised adults (aged 18 years or older) of six European countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain). The Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 3.0) was administered to 21,425 individuals. RESULTS Lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation was 7.8% and of suicidal attempts 1.3%. Abstract:Background: We aimed to examine the influence of gender on serum trace elements and minerals levels in depression, as well as the impact of suicidal ideation (SI) on these gender dimorphisms. Methods: A total of 260 unmedicated patients with a current major depressive episode were enrolled. The Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation was utilized to evaluate SI. The serum levels of copper, zinc, iron, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium were quantified. Results: Within the non-SI (NSI) group, females exhibited higher levels of copper (p = 0.001) and phosphorus (p = 0.008), and lower levels of zinc (p = 0.022) and calcium (p = 0.008) compared to males. Conversely, no discernible gender disparities were observed in the SI group (all p > 0.05). Also, no group differences in these trace elements/minerals were observed between the SI and NSI groups (all p > 0.05). Notably, serum iron levels exhibited a significant group-by-sex interaction effect (p = 0.024). Further analysis revealed that iron levels were higher in the SI group than in the NSI group among females (p = 0.048), but lower in females than in males within the NSI group (p < 0.001). Moreover, a positive association between the fourth quantile of serum iron and SI was detected in females (odds ratio [OR] = 2.88, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.08-8.11). Conclusions: Gender effects on serum trace element/mineral levels were different in depressed patients with and without SI. Female patients were susceptible to SI when serum iron was at the upper end of normal.
