Abstract:A generalized quantum Rabi Hamiltonian with both one- and two-photon terms has emerged in the circuit quantum electrodynamics system for a decade. The usual parity symmetry is broken naturally in the simultaneous presence of both couplings, which complicates analytical treatments, even in the rotating wave approximations. In this paper, we propose an adiabatic approximation to this generic model by using Bogoliubov operators, and obtain a very concise analytical solution for both eigenvalues and eigenstates. Although the adiabatic approximation is only exact in the vanishing limit of the qubit frequency, the results for some physical observables nevertheless agree well with the numerical ones in a wide parameter regime. In the rotating-wave approximations, we also derive an analytical eigensolution. Two dominant Rabi frequencies are found in the Rabi oscillations of this generalized model. We also apply the present analytical theory to the vacuum Rabi splitting. It is found that some new phenomena emerge just because of the presence of the additional two-photon coupling term.
Two-photon Rabi Model: Analytic Solutions and Spectral Collapse

Abstract:The two-photon quantum Rabi model is analyzed using the Z(4)-symmetry and su(1, 1)-algebra. We derive the G-function whose zeros give the exact eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian. The singularity structure of the G-function allows to draw conclusions about the distribution of these eigenvalues along the real axis and we derive the spectral collapse phenomenon at critical coupling g(c), found numerically before. The spectrum at g(c) consists of a discrete and a continuous part: the ground state is always separated from the continuum by a finite excitation gap, ruling out a quantum phase transition in the usual sense. For large qubit splitting, also other low lying states split off from the continuum. However, perturbation theory predicts the vanishing of the gap to all orders, demonstrating its non-perturbative nature. We corroborate this result with a variational calculation for the ground state.

Abstract:Using extended coherent states, an analytically exact study has been carried out for the quantum Rabi model with two equivalent qubits. Compact transcendental functions of one variable have been derived leading to exact solutions. The energy spectrum is clearly identified and analyzed. Also obtained analytically are the necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of isolated exceptional solutions, which are not doubly degenerate as in the one-qubit quantum Rabi model.

Abstract:The non-Hermitian one-photon and two-photon quantum Rabi models (QRMs) within imaginary couplings are respectively solved through the Bogoliubov operators approach. Transcendental functions responsible for exact solutions are derived, whose zeros produce the complete spectra. Exceptional points (EPs) can be identified with simultaneously vanishing transcendental function and its derivative with respect to energy. The EP is formed in the two nearest-neighboring excited energy levels, and shifts to the lower coupling strength at higher energy levels. The well-known generalized rotating-wave approximation method in the one-photon QRM is also extended to its non-Hermitian counterpart, and the obtained analytical EPs agree quite well with the exact ones, and the simulated dynamics can describes the basic features of this model. Very interestingly, under the resonant condition in the non-Hermitian two-photon QRM, the lowest two excited states which belong to the same parity and in the same photonic subspace within odd photon numbers can cross, and boh always have real energy levels. Such an EP at this crossing point is totally new, because the energies of the two levels are purely real, in sharp contrast to the conventional EP in the non-Hermitian systems. For both non-Hermitian QRMs, the fidelity susceptibility goes to negative infinity at the EPs, consistent with the recent observations in the non-Hermitian systems.
Solutions to the Mixed Quantum Rabi Model

Abstract:The analytically exact solutions to the mixed quantum Rabi model including both one- and two-photon terms are found by using Bogoliubov operators. Transcendental functions in terms of $4 \times 4$ determinants responsible for the exact solutions are derived. These so-called $G$-functions with pole structure can be reduced to the previous ones in the unmixed models. The zeros of $G$-functions reproduce completely the regular spectra. The exceptional eigenvalues can be also obtained by another transcendental function. From the pole structure, we can derive two energy limits when the two-photon coupling strength tends to the collapse point $1/2$. Surprisingly, all energy levels only collapse to the lower one, which diverges negatively. All the level crossings in the unmixed models are relaxed to avoided crossings in the present mixed model due to absence of parity symmetry. Very interestingly, the effective one-photon coupling is enhanced in the presence of the two-photon coupling, which paves a highly efficient and economic way to access the deep-strong coupling regime even though the original one-photon coupling is weak.

Abstract:The previously observed double degeneracy associated with hidden symmetries in the asymmetric one-photon quantum Rabi model (QRM) for the qubit biases identical to a multiple of cavity frequency is corroborated in the framework of Bogoliubov operators approach. By the pole lines of a derived transcendental functions, we can rigorously prove that two different eigenstates share the same eigenenergy at some level crossing points in the energy spectra, clearly indicating the double degeneracy. Due to the absence of the parity symmetry, the observed double degeneracy can be only attributed to the hidden symmetry. Moreover, using the same approach, we discover for the first time the true level crossings within the same subspace of even or odd photon number states in the asymmetric two-photon QRM at some special qubit biases, implying the existence of the hidden symmetry in this two-photon QRM. The biases for occurrence of level crossings are coupling strength dependent, in contrast to the one-photon QRM. Interestingly, it is found that the numbers of the doubly degenerate crossing points in the two asymmetric quantum Rabi models are comparable in terms of the same order of the polynomial equations required for the level crossings.

Abstract:The various generalized spectral determinants (G-functions) of the two-photon quantum Rabi model are analyzed with emphasis on the qualitative aspects of the regular spectrum. Whereas all of them yield at least a subset of the exact regular eigenvalues, only the G-function proposed by Chen et al. in 2012 exhibits an explicitly known pole structure which dictates the approach to the collapse point. We derive this function rigorously employing the $\mathbb{Z}_4$-symmetry of the model and show that its zeros correspond to the complete regular spectrum.

The erroneous solution is seen to be nothing more than the combined solution of the simpler Jaynes-Cummings and anti-Jaynes-Cummings models obtained by neglecting terms in the model Hamiltonian.

Abstract:The quantum Rabi-Stark model, where the linear dipole coupling and the nonlinear Stark-like coupling are present on an equal footing, are studied within the Bogoliubov operators approach. Transcendental functions responsible for the exact solutions are derived in a compact way, much simpler than previous ones obtained in the Bargmann representation. The zeros of transcendental functions reproduce completely the regular spectra. In terms of the explicit pole structure of these functions, two kinds of exceptional eigenvalues are obtained and distinguished in a transparent manner. Very interestingly, a first-order quantum phase transition indicated by level crossing of the ground state and the first excited state is induced by the positive nonlinear Stark-like coupling, which is however absent in any previous isotropic quantum Rabi models. When the absolute value of the nonlinear coupling strength is equal to twice the cavity frequency, this model can be reduced to an effective quantum harmonic oscillator, and solutions are then obtained analytically. The spectra collapse phenomenon is observed at a critical coupling, while below this critical coupling, infinite discrete spectra accumulate into a finite energy from below.

Abstract:The two-mode quantum Rabi model with bilinear coupling is studied using extended squeezed states. We derive G-functions for each Bargmann index q . They share a common structure with the G-function of the one-photon and two-photon quantum Rabi models. The regular spectrum is given by zeros of the G-function while the conditions for the presence of doubly degenerate (exceptional) eigenvalues are obtained in closed form through the lifting property. The simple singularity structure of the G-function allows to draw conclusions about the distribution of eigenvalues along the real axis and to understand the spectral collapse phenomenon when the coupling reaches a critical value.

Abstract:The generalized rotating-wave approximation (GRWA) is presented for the two-qubit quantum Rabi model. The analytical expressions in the zeroth-order approximation recover the previous adiabatic ones. The counter-rotating-wave terms can be eliminated by performing the first-order corrections. An effective solvable Hamiltonian with the same form as the ordinary RWA one is then obtained, giving very accurate eigenvalues and eigenstates. Energy levels in the present GRWA are in accordance with the numerical exact diagonalization ones in a wide range of coupling strengths. The population dynamics in the GRWA are in quantitative agreement with the numerical results and exhibit the absence of collapses clearly, revealing the effects of the counter-rotating wave.

The first-order quantum phase transitions are also detected by the pole structure of the derived transcendental functions, similar to the one-photon Rabi–Stark model, different from the two-photon Rabi model where the energy levels for the ground-state and the first excited state do not cross. The spectra collapse characteristics resemble those in two-photon Rabi model. Some low lying levels can split off from the collapse energy, which is different from the one-photon Rabi–Stark model in which all levels collapse.

Abstract:In this paper, we uncover the elusive level crossings in a subspace of the asymmetric two-photon quantum Rabi model (tpQRM) when the bias parameter of qubit is an even multiple of the renormalized cavity frequency. Due to the absence of any explicit symmetry in the subspace, this double degeneracy at the crossing points implies the existence of the hidden symmetry. It is found that the number of the doubly degenerate crossing points in the asymmetric tpQRM is comparable to that in asymmetric one-photon QRM in terms of the same order of the constrained conditions. The bias parameter required for the occurrence of level crossings in the asymmetric tpQRM is characteristically different from that at a multiple of the cavity frequency in the asymmetric one-photon QRM, suggesting the different hidden symmetries in the two asymmetric QRMs.

Abstract:In this work, the anisotropic quantum Rabi model with different coupling strengths of the rotating-wave and counter-rotating wave terms is studied by using two kinds of extended coherent states (ECS). By the first kind of ECS, we can derive a so-called G-function, by which both the regular and exceptional solutions can be given. The exceptional solution are just corresponding to the crossing points of two energy levels with different parities, so is doubly degenerate. By the second kind of ECS, a general scheme for the eigensolutions is derived analytically in a unified way. The zero-order approximation is just the adiabatic approximation, and the first-order approximation is actually a generalized rotating-wave approximation. The algebraic formulae for the eigensolutions are given explicitly in two approximations. The generalized rotating-wave approximations work well in a wide range of two different coupling strengths and the qubit detunings.

Abstract:Exact spectrum of the two-photon Rabi Hamiltonian is found, proceeding in full analogy with the solution of standard (one-photon) Rabi Hamiltonian, published by Braak in Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 100401 (2011). The Hamiltonian is rewritten as a set of two differential equations. Symmetries that get hidden after further treatment are found. One can plainly see, how the Hilbert space splits into four disjunct subspaces, categorized by four values of the symmetry parameter $c=\pm1,\pm i$. There were only two values $\pm1$ for the standard Rabi model. Four analytic functions are introduced by a recurrence scheme for the coefficients of their series expansion. All their roots yield the complete spectrum of the Hamiltonian. Eigenstates in Bargmann space are also at disposal.

The $k$-photon quantum Rabi model

Abstract:A generalization of the quantum Rabi model is obtained by replacing the linear (dipole) coupling between the two-level system and the radiation mode by a non-linear expression in the creation and annihilation operators, corresponding to multi-photon excitations. If each spin flip involves $k$ photons, it is called the "$k$-photon" quantum Rabi model. While the formally symmetric Hamilton operator is self-adjoint in the case $k=2$, it is demonstrated here that the Hamiltonian is not self-adjoint for $k\ge 3$. Therefore it does not generate a unitary time evolution and is unphysical. This result cannot be obtained by numerical calculations in finite-dimensional spaces which attempt to approximate an unbounded operator by a finite-rank operator.

Abstract:The asymptotic behavior of large eigenvalues is studied for the two-photon quantum Rabi model with a finite bias. It is proved that the spectrum of this Hamiltonian model consists of two eigenvalue sequences { E n + } n = 0 ∞ \lbrace E_n^+\rbrace _{n=0}^{\infty } , { E n − } n = 0 ∞ \lbrace E_n^-\rbrace _{n=0}^{\infty } , and their large n n asymptotic behavior with error term O ⁡ ( n − 1 / 2 ) \operatorname {O}(n^{-1/2}) is described. The principal tool is the method of near-similarity of operators introduced by G. V. Rozenblum and developed in works of J. Janas, S. Naboko, and E. A. Yanovich (Tur).
