Abstract:As is known, listening, speaking, reading and writing are the four basic language skills. Reading includes reading aloud and silent reading. Since the 1990s, with the popularity of Communicative Teaching Method, schools emphasize the cultivation of language application and communicative ability more and people pay less attention to reading aloud. Gradually students don’t think reading aloud is important any more. However, reading aloud is not only the starting point in English learning but also the foundation of mastering the target language. Ignoring the teaching of reading aloud exacerbates the problem of the “dumb-Chinese English”. Reading English aloud is very meaningful in oral English and it is also one of the effective ways to improve students’ English language ability. This paper focuses on how to effectively apply reading aloud in oral English teaching from the following aspects: the relation between English reading aloud and language sense, the negative impact of ignoring reading aloud, the basic methods and the application of the skills in reading aloud.

Abstract:BACKGROUND/AIMS: Oral narrative language is a persistent area of language difficulty for individuals with intellectual disability (ID). This study aims to explore the effectiveness of a comprehensive intervention program that incorporates extended conversations into video-based story retelling instruction with a novel visual support strategy, Story Hand, to develop oral narrative skills in adolescents with ID in China.METHODS: Using a single-case multiple-probe across participants design, the researchers examined whether the comprehensive intervention program could improve participants' oral narrative skills both microstructurally and macrostructurally.RESULTS: All three participants demonstrated moderate to high treatment effects in the microstructural narrative outcomes (i.e., the mean length of utterance in morphemes [MLU-M] and the number of different words [NDW]) and one of the macrostructural narrative outcomes (i.e., the complexity of story grammar [SG-complexity]) in response to the comprehensive intervention program, and these acquired effects were maintained at a high level for up to one month. However, all three participants demonstrated limited treatment effects in one of the macrostructural narrative outcomes (i.e., cohesion) in response to the comprehensive intervention program.CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS: The comprehensive intervention program that incorporates extended conversations into visually supported video-based story retelling instruction offers an option for teachers to develop oral narrative skills in adolescents with ID. However, the relative effectiveness of the different components of the intervention needs to be further explored.

These advancements have propelled the application of AI to new heights, particularly in the realm of education. Notably, AI applications such as speech recognition, human-computer interaction, and automated evaluation have revolutionized traditional English speaking teaching, introducing unprecedented changes to the way students learn and interact. The paper aims to investigate how AI might enhance high school pupils' English-speaking proficiency, which employs a literature review methodology to examine and illustrate the smooth integration of AI technology with high school English speaking instruction. This approach enhances speaking learning materials and fosters creativity in teaching strategies and assessment techniques. In addition, it creates room for the evolution of the oral teaching style and broadens the learning environment. Abstract:The enhancement of intercultural communicative competence is emphasized as one of the objectives of Second Language Acquisition. Recognizing the cultural knowledge and spiritual values carried by the target language texts is an effective way to improve learners' daily communicative competence and cultivate a sense of cultural identity. As a part of traditional Chinese culture, Baijiu culture and its textual carriers also have unique teaching functions. This study applies the integration of Baijiu culture stories and storytelling pedagogy in the Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) practice, for the purpose of exploring the effectiveness of Baijiu cultural story in Second-language acquisition(L2). Through theoretical analysis and teaching practice, it is found that the integrated application of Chinese Baijiu cultural story and storytelling method can comprehensively improve learners' language skills and enable them to better engage in intercultural dialogue in an inclusive manner.

Abstract:This paper presents a targeted system to help Chinese deaf children learn both sign language and Chinese characters in early language learning. The system combines sign recognition and in-air writing techniques with games so that children can practice sign language and Chinese character writing at the same time. Sign recognition is used to assess the accuracy of sign language and in-air writing records the process of writing Chinese characters. In addition, the game adds to the learning fun and makes children more willing to complete learning tasks. We have developed a prototype to evaluate the effectiveness of a simultaneous Chinese sign language and Chinese character teaching system based on gesture recognition and in-air writing. We expect that this system will increase children's willingness and efficiency to learn sign language and Chinese characters, and eventually be used to assist in early language education for deaf children in the Chinese region.

Abstract:This paper examines storytelling as a technology of teaching foreign languages with the help of fascinating stories in the inclusive environment. The relevance of developing inclusive education, i.e. integrating students with different individual characteristics (in particular, disabilities) into the learning process, is highlighted. In this regard, the concept of cognitive learning styles and Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences are characterized as not quite suitable for the role of a general foundation of language teaching methodology in an inclusive classroom. Krashen’s Monitor Model, in its turn, is adopted as the theoretical basis of the modern approach to second language acquisition, emphasizing the importance of comprehensible input (received speech material) and emotional filter (psychological barrier) as key factors in the development of speech competence. In light of this, the advantages of a multisensory approach to language learning, and, in particular, the inclusive potential of using multisensory stories and creating students’ own stories with the support of a teacher (storybuilding), are clarified. Storytelling, thus, is considered by the authors of the article as a universal method for developing both receptive and productive speech skills in a foreign language for all kinds of students, including children with disabilities. The paper contains methodological recommendations regarding the implementation of storytelling technology in an inclusive classroom, including the conditions for effective assimilation of educational material by students with special educational needs. The principles of scaffolding (teacher support), mutual cooperation, clarity of instructions, sequence of material presentation, individualized information delivery forms, emotional involvement and integration are also explained. Based on the research literature on psychology, inclusive pedagogy and language education (Vygotsky, Rubinstein, Asher, Krashen), as well as some case studies featuring diverse students with varying disabilities, the authors argue for the need to gradually shift from skill-building to implicit teaching (and learning).

Abstract:A substantial number of 5–7 year old children experience delayed language development which threatens their progress in school, although they have not been placed on speech and language therapy caseloads. Children with delayed language development typically have a limited ability to understand and tell stories. Intervention to develop the oral narratives of these children can significantly improve their ability to understand and tell stories. This development improves their ability to participate in, and benefit from, mainstream classroom activities. We report on a style of intervention which aims to achieve these objectives. The intervention applies a story grammar approach through a collaboration between teachers, learning support assistants and speech and language therapists. The intervention took place in UK schools with a high proportion of children from families with low socio‐economic status and this article reports significant improvements in the quality of these children's story‐telling.

Abstract:The article examines the modern capabilities of using digital technologies in the preschool education system. The use of these digital technologies under present-day conditions is simply necessary due to the fact that preschoolers today represent a new generation, for which the use of various gadgets and applications is an everyday routine. It is outlined that the use of digital technologies in the education system and the provision of diversity in teaching methods, changing activities and the development of children’s desire to master virtual tools and teaching methods contributes to increasing children’s interest in the learning process and develops their motivation in educational activities. The article focuses on the relevance of the use of digital storytelling technology in the study of English by preschoolers. The author of the article comes to the conclusion about the effectiveness of this technology, talks about the stages of preparation for the successful implementation and use of storytelling technology in English lessons, and also offers resources that will help teachers to implement the technology in the educational process. The author shows the advantages of using digital storytelling technology, makes recommendations on its combination with other educational technologies in order to ensure the diversity in pedagogical approaches being used as well as to improve the learning of material and maintain the constant cognitive interest of preschoolers in the English language.

Abstract:The primary school stage is an important period to cultivate language development and basic language ability. Although there are many studies on the reading and writing skills of hearing children, very little research has been conducted on these skills of hearing-impaired children. This study focuses on analysing the current situation and the development characteristics of hearing-impaired children in China. With a sample of 114 hearing-impaired children and a total of 640 hearing children, who were enrolled in the elementary school attached to Hebei Normal University, this study conducted a survey, test and interview. The collected data were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences and content analysis. The study concluded that the language skills of hearing-impaired children remained at a low level and may not even improve with the rise in grades. Regarding the academic skills of hearing-impaired children, individual differences between hearing-impaired children are large and the academic skills of hearing-impaired children tend to be delayed compared to hearing children. Abstract:Storytelling techniques serve as dynamic tools for enhancing language skills, encompassing both receptive (listening, reading) and productive (speaking, writing) proficiencies. In contrast to their non-narrative counterparts, these techniques offer a more potent array of teaching methodologies. This study aims to elucidate the current landscape of research concerning the efficacy of storytelling techniques. Initially, the investigation delves into the cognitive processing of narratives. Stories engage language processing centers, invigorate the visual cortex, evoke emotive responses, and facilitate comprehension of intricate information. Subsequently, the study explores linguistic processing theory and embodied cognition theory. Through an exhaustive literature review, this research applies a rigorous evidence synthesis method to assess selected studies, culminating in the amalgamation of findings when comparability permits. The study unveils that storytelling techniques foster reading and listening comprehension, bolster speaking and writing skills, and kindle creativity and imagination. Moreover, enhancements span vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. Nonetheless, while generally efficacious, the uniformity of effectiveness across diverse learners remains a nuanced aspect.

Abstract:This article investigated the use of storytelling in teaching technology and foreign literature in school. Storytelling is not just about literary stories, but rather about effectively transferring information and motivating action through storytelling. It is used in many fields such as interpersonal communication, media, business, advertising, politics, education, and art. The value of content, word beauty, and form refinement are still important in storytelling. Storytelling is a teaching tool for centuries, and it continues to be an effective method for engaging students in learning. In recent years, educators have begun to explore the use of storytelling specifically in teaching technology and foreign literature in schools. Today storytelling has become widespread educational method. Stories can be used in writings or orally, through different illustrations etc. It also helps to introduce foreign literature to students. By telling stories about the culture and history of the author or the setting of the story, students can gain a deeper understanding of the text. This approach can also help students connect with the material emotionally, which can enhance their engagement and retention. Storytelling in technology or vocational education classes helps launch creative projects for students, promotes motivational components of project-based learning, and activates exploratory and research activities in studying manufacturing technologies. In both cases, storytelling can be used in a variety of ways. Teachers might read stories aloud to the class, ask students to create their own stories, or incorporate storytelling into group projects. The key is to use storytelling as a tool to enhance learning, rather than as a distraction from it. Abstract:This article was written with the purpose of obtaining information from physical and digital documents, as well as, analyzing the important data used in the literature review of our project, “Storytelling as a Pedagogical Strategy to Teach English Language Vocabulary to Children”. The studies were categorized into four aspects which are ‘study’, ‘focus’, ‘context’ and ‘results. We focused our attention on gathering relevant information to achieve the objectives of this project. Since teaching English in elementary school has been recently implemented in Nicaragua, not enough research has been done in this area. We believe it is necessary to support elementary school with more research about the use of different resources to support English language teaching in this country. One of the weaknesses when learning a second language is that if children have lack of vocabulary, children will have difficulties understanding some explanations in the English language classes. Effectively teaching English will promote better communication and understanding in future English classes. Studies have proven the effectiveness storytelling has in teaching English language vocabulary to children, as well as, how storytelling can be combined with other educational instruments. Studies also found that learning vocabulary is essential to understand the assignments in the English classes and the activities in the English workbooks.

Abstract:With the acceleration of our country’s internationalization process, international students from all over the world are constantly pouring into China, with different purposes to learn Chinese. In international students’ daily life, it is impossible to completely avoid using Chinese, especially spoken Chinese. However, in actual teaching, we found that many teaching methods in oral Chinese classes are either very similar to reading and writing classes, or there are too many blind activities and games, which is very detrimental to the improvement of Chinese learning and oral communication skills of international students. Abstract:Purpose: This pilot study aimed to examine the effects of a caregiver-supported, narrative-based intervention program on the story retelling skills of a group of preschoolers who are deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) using listening and spoken language (LSL). Method: A concurrent multiple baseline design across participants was used to determine the effect of a narrative intervention on the story retelling skills of three preschool-age participants who demonstrated complex language delays. Their primary caregivers also functioned as participants. The 6-week narrative intervention program was implemented using a caregiver coaching model during individual therapy sessions. The dependent variable probes were administered twice per week across phases to assess the preschool participants' story retelling skills, including story grammar, complexity, and completeness. Social validity was also evaluated using a caregiver questionnaire. Results: A functional relation was demonstrated between the intervention and story retelling across all three preschool participants with notable increases in the inclusion of story grammar elements and episodic completeness. All three participants maintained scores above baseline levels on dependent variable probes across the 6-week maintenance period. Social validity was strong according to the results of a caregiver questionnaire completed at the conclusion of the intervention. Conclusion: These findings offer preliminary support for the use of a caregiver-supported, narrative-based intervention program to improve storytelling and retelling skills in preschoolers who are D/HH using LSL.

Abstract:Purpose While most language departments of the university offer service-learning (SL) subjects based on language teaching, such as "Teaching Chinese as a Second Language in Local Schools" and "Serving the Community through Teaching English," this paper aims to argue that teaching students to teach language(s) is yet to be the best strategy to serve the service recipients. Design/methodology/approach SL is widely understood as an experiential learning pedagogy that integrates academic focus, reflection and community service and is shown to be impactful. In Hong Kong, the first university that has made SL a graduation requirement is the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (the University). Considering this, new SL courses have proliferated over the past decade. Adopting a narrative inquiry approach, this paper examines personal narratives from a new SL subject aiming to raise awareness of refugees in Hong Kong. The data includes students' reflective journals, co-created personal narratives and podcasts and semi-structured interviews. Findings This paper finds that crafting and recording narratives of shared experiences deepens cultural understanding, cultivates empathy and facilitates language learning in a genuine setting. Social implications Ultimately, this paper advocates a well-designed SL that combines language, content and technology as a powerful, transformational experience for both college students and service recipients. Originality/value This paper focuses on a brand new SL course, "Storytelling for Understanding: Refugee Children in Hong Kong," offered in Semester 1, 2022–2023. The subject was developed by the two authors from a language division affiliated to the University. The deliverables were podcast recordings, co-authored and co-edited by the students and the children.

Abstract:Child Language Teaching and Therapy, Ahead of Print. The present study aimed to explore the specific components of home literacy resources (HLR) and parental behaviours during shared book reading (SBR) that may contribute to the language development of Chinese-speaking hearing-impaired children. A total of 90 Chinese-speaking hearing-impaired children aged 3 to 6 years, along with their parents, participated in this study. Following the design of previous studies, we required the parents to complete a questionnaire regarding HLR and parental SBR behaviours, and their hearing-impaired children received a standardised language test. The results showed that such HLR components as storybook capacity at home, weekly frequency of SBR, duration per SBR session, starting age of SBR, and the parental SBR behaviour, parent and child discussing opinions with each other, could significantly account for an additional portion of the variance in children's receptive, expressive, and overall language beyond the demographic variables. It is thus recommended that clinicians share this evidence-based information with parents who have hearing-impaired children to help their children develop language to their fullest potential.
