Abstract:Construction of well-defined sulfur-rich macromolecules in a facile manner is an interesting but challenging topic. Herein, we disclose how to readily construct well-defined triblock sulfur-rich thermoplastic elastomers via a self-switchable isothiocyanate/episulfide copolymerization and air-assisted oxidative coupling strategy. During self-switchable polymerization, alternating copolymerization of isothiocyanate and episulfide occurs initially due to the lower energy barrier for isothiocyanate insertion with respect to successive episulfide ring-opening. After exhaustion of isothiocyanate, ring-opening polymerization of episulfide begins, providing diblock polymers. Subsequent exposure of the reaction to air leads to a transformation of diblock copolymers into triblock thermoplastic elastomers. This protocol can be extended to diverse isothiocyanates and episulfides, allowing fine-tuning of the performance of the produced sulfur-rich thermoplastic elastomers.
Closed-loop recycling of sulfur-rich polymers with tunable properties spanning thermoplastics, elastomers, and vitrimers

Abstract:Abstract The development of closed-loop recycling polymers that exhibit excellent performance is of great significance. Sulfur-rich polymers possessing excellent optical, thermal, and mechanical properties are promising candidates for chemical recycling but lack efficient synthetic strategies for achieving diverse structures. Herein, we report a universal synthetic strategy for producing polytrithiocarbonates, a class of sulfur-rich polymers, via the polycondensation of dithiols and dimethyl trithiocarbonate. This strategy has excellent compatibility with a wide range of monomers, including aliphatic, heteroatomic, and aromatic dithiols enabling the synthesis of polytrithiocarbonates with diverse structures. The present synthesis strategy offers a versatile platform for the construction of thermoplastics, elastomers, and vitrimers. Notably, these polytrithiocarbonates can be easily depolymerized via solvolysis into the corresponding monomers, which can be repolymerized to virgin polymers without changing the material properties.

Abstract:The alternating copolymerization of one-carbon (C1) building blocks including carbon dioxide (CO2) and its sulfur analogues of carbon disulfide (CS2) and carbonyl sulfide (COS) with epoxides afford new copolymers, namely polycarbonates and polythiocarbonates, with tailored chain structures and properties. This review mainly focuses on the recent advances in C1-involved copolymerization via heterogeneous catalysis of zinc-cobalt(III) double metal cyanide complex [Zn–Co(III) DMCC] catalyst. The chemistry of zinc-hydroxyl bond of Zn–Co(III) DMCC is responsible to the copolymerization of these C1 monomers with epoxides through the formation of C–O (S) bond. The syntheses of CO2-based copolymers with various topologies are also reviewed in detail. The utilization of CO2, COS and CS2 as monomers for polymer synthesis have significant contributions to the sustainable use of renewable resources.
Converting inorganic sulfur into degradable thermoplastics and adhesives by copolymerization with cyclic disulfides

Abstract:Converting elementary sulfur into sulfur-rich polymers provides a sustainable strategy to replace fossil-fuel-based plastics. However, the low ring strain of eight-membered rings, i.e., S8 monomers, compromises their ring-opening polymerization (ROP) due to lack of an enthalpic driving force and as a consequence, poly(sulfur) is inherently unstable. Here we report that copolymerization with cyclic disulfides, e.g., 1,2-dithiolanes, can enable a simple and energy-saving way to convert elementary sulfur into sulfur-rich thermoplastics. The key strategy is to combine two types of ROP — both mediated by disulfide bond exchange — to tackle the thermodynamic instability of poly(sulfur). Meanwhile, the readily modifiable sidechain of the cyclic disulfides provides chemical space to engineer the mechanical properties and dynamic functions over a large range, e.g., self-repairing ability and degradability. Thus, this simple and robust system is expected to be a starting point for the organic transformation of inorganic sulfur toward sulfur-rich functional and green plastics.

Abstract:The development of sulfur-rich polymers derived from elementary sulfur provides an innovative approach to industrial waste valorization. Despite significant advancements in polymerization techniques and promising applications beyond traditional polymers, polysulfide networks are still primarily stabilized by diene crosslinkers, forming robust C–S bonds that hinder the degradation of sulfur-based polymers. In this study, the anionic ring-opening copolymerization of chemically homologous S8 and cyclic disulfides was explored to yield robust sulfur-rich copolymers with high molecular weight. The incorporation of polysulfide segments not only efficiently activated the crosslinked networks for excellent reprocessability and mechanical adaptability but also endowed the resulting copolymer with high optical transparency in the near-infrared region. More importantly, the dynamic disulfide crosslinking sites promoted the chemical closed-loop recyclability of the polysulfide networks via reversible S–S cleavage. This innovative inverse vulcanization strategy based on dynamic disulfide crosslinkers offers a promising pathway for the advanced applications and upcycling of high-performance sulfur-rich polymers.

Abstract:The chemical recycling of CO2-based polycarbonates synthesized from mono-substituted epoxides, such as poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), is constrained by the formation of thermally stable five-membered cyclic carbonates. Here, we propose a unique one-pot/one-step method for the quantitative chemical recycling of PPC to sulfur-containing polymers using COS as "sulfur source". The process undergoes several steps facilitated by commercially available organic bases. Firstly, PPC is degraded to cyclic carbonate, followed by decarboxylation to produce propylene oxide (PO). Next, cyclic (thio)carbonate is generated through the coupling reaction of PO and COS, followed by decarboxylation to propylene sulfide. Finally, the ring-opening polymerization of propylene sulfide yields sulfur-containing polymers. The resultant polymers possess tunable thioether (72-100%) and thiocarbonate linkages upon varying the catalyst and reaction conditions. Notably, the approach is also feasible for the poly(ether carbonate). The work provides a "polymer A to polymer B" strategy for the upcycling of PPC to sulfur-containing polymers.

Abstract:The excessive use of plastics has led to severe global problems involving environmental, energy, and health issues and demands for sustainable and recyclable alternatives. Toward circular plastics, the development of efficient chemical recycling methods without loss of properties or allowing reprocessing into new materials offer tremendous opportunities. Here, we report an intrinsically recyclable and reconfigurable poly(disulfide) polymer using a natural small molecule, thioctic acid (TA), as the feedstock. Taking advantage of its dynamic covalent ring-opening polymerization, this material enables a dual closed-loop chemical recycling network among TA monomers and two kinds of polymer products, including self-healing elastomers and mechanically robust ionic films. Mild and complete depolymerization into monomers in diluted alkaline aqueous solution is achieved with yields of recovered monomers up to 86%. The polymer materials can be repeatedly recycled and reused with reconfigurable polymer composition and tunable mechanical properties offering prospects for sustainable functional plastics.

We show that simple lithium alkoxides facilitate the polymerisation of elemental sulfur S8 with industrially relevant propylene oxide (PO) and CS2 (a base chemical sourced from waste S8 itself) to give poly(monothiocarbonate-alt-Sx) in which x can be controlled by the amount of supplied sulfur. The in-situ generation of thiolate intermediates obtained by a rearrangement, which follows CS2 and PO incorporation, allows to combine S8 and epoxides into one polymer sequence that would otherwise not be possible. Mechanistic investigations reveal that alkyl oligosulfide intermediates from S8 ring opening and sulfur chain length equilibration represent the better nucleophiles for inserting the next PO if compared to the trithiocarbonates obtained from the competing CS2 addition, which causes the sequence selectivity. The polymers can be crosslinked in-situ with multifunctional thiols to yield reprocessable and degradable networks. Our report demonstrates how mechanistic understanding allows to combine intrinsically incompatible building blocks for sulfur waste utilisation.

Abstract:Sulfur, which is generated from the waste byproducts in the oil and gas refinery industry, is an abundant, cheap, stable, and readily available source in the world. However, the utilization of excessive amounts of sulfur is mostly limited, and developing novel methods for sulfur conversion is still a global concern. Here, we report a facile one-step conversion from elemental sulfur to functional poly(O-thiocarbamate)s through a multicomponent polymerization of sulfur, diols, and diisocyanides, which possesses a series of advantages such as mild condition (55 degrees C), short reaction time (1 h), 100% atom economy, and transition-metal free in the catalyst system. Seven poly(O-thiocarbamate)s are constructed with high yields (up to 95%), large molecular weight (up to 53100 of M-w), good solubility in organic solvents, and completely new polymer structures. The poly(O-thiocarbamate)s possess a high refractive index above 1.7 from 600 to 1700 nm by adjusting the sulfur content. By incorporating tetraphenylethene (TPE) moieties into the polymer structure, the poly(O-thiocarbamate)s can also be designed as fluorescent sensors to detect harmful metal cation of Hg2+ in a turn-on mode with high sensitivity (LOD = 32 nM) and excellent selectivity (over interference cations of Pb2+, Au3+, Ag+). Different from the previous reports, the exact coordination structure is first identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which is revealed in a tetracoordination fashion (two sulfur and two chloride) using a model coordination compound.

Abstract:Developing polymerized sulfur using a biogenic catalyst derived from silver grass (SG) for enhanced mechanical performance and sustainability. This study introduces a novel biogenic catalyst derived from silver grass (SG) that could revolutionize sulfur polymerization, addressing the critical challenge of sulfur waste management. The oil refining industry generates large quantities of sulfur byproducts, which pose significant environmental risks. Inverse vulcanization offers a promising method to convert this waste into valuable polymers, but it traditionally relies on costly and environmentally harmful catalysts. The development of benign, sustainable catalysts is essential to making sulfur polymerization more eco‐friendly and scalable. This research demonstrates the effectiveness of the SG biogenic catalyst compared to the conventional chemical catalyst zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (Zn(DTC)2). Rheological characterizations reveal that the SG catalyst not only outperforms Zn(DTC)2 at elevated temperatures but also provides superior moisture resistance, enhancing polymer durability. Additionally, the SG‐catalyzed polymer exhibits better elasticity and structural integrity under mechanical stress. A density functional theory (DFT)‐based study further supports these findings, showing that the SG biochar matrix enables stronger Zn‐S coordination, resulting in improved polymer properties. These results highlight the potential of this biogenic catalyst to revolutionize sulfur polymerization, paving the way for more sustainable practices in the chemical industry by converting waste sulfur into valuable polymer resources.

Abstract:The utilization of sulfur has been a global issue. Copolymerization of element sulfur (S8) with other monomers is a promising route to convert it to useful materials but is limited by the comonomers. Here, we report anionic hybrid copolymerization of S8 with acrylate and epoxide at room temperature, where S8 does not copolymerize with epoxide in the absence of acrylate. Yet, the proton transfer from the methyne in acrylate to the oxygen anion enables the ring-opening of the cyclic comonomer and hence the copolymerization. The cyclic comonomers can be expanded to lactone and cyclic carbonate. Specifically, the copolymer of S8 with bisphenl A diglycidyl ether and diacrylate displays mechanical properties comparable to those of most common plastics, namely, it has ultimate tensile strength as high as 60.8 MPa and Young's modulus up to 680 MPa. It also exhibits high UV resistance and good transparency. Particularly, it has excellent UV-induced self-healing, reprocessability and closed-loop recyclability due to the abundant dynamic S-S bonds and ester groups. This study provides an efficient strategy to turn element sulfur into closed-loop recyclable polymer with high mechanical and optical performances.

Abstract:This study illustrates an innovative, safe, and cost‐effective method for synthesizing cyclic carbonate monomer from biomass lignin and CO2, followed by the synthesis of recyclable polycarbonates. This development of CO2 and lignin‐based polymers, along with the closed‐loop chemical recycling of polymer ↔ monomer leads to a sustainable circular plastic economy. This work highlights the conversion method of chaining up greenhouse gas CO2 with biomass lignin to develop new sustainable, recyclable polymers from abundant and non‐food based renewable resources. A cyclic carbonate monomer has synthesized using a cost‐effective, non‐phosgene‐based, and greener approach under atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The fully programable ring‐opening polymerization is accomplished by varying the catalyst (DBU and TBD), catalyst loading (0.5–5.0%) and reaction time (2–40 min). The best polymer is obtained in 1% TBD with a 30‐min reaction. The precise characterization of the synthesized cyclic carbonate monomer and polymers' structure are established using spectroscopic analyses including 1H, 13C, and 2D HSQC NMR, FT‐IR, and GPC. The new polymers exhibit high molecular weights (Mn: 120.34–154.58 kDa) and adequate thermal stabilities (Td5%: 244–277 °C from TGA and Tg: 33–52 °C from DSC), rendering them advantageous for practical applications. Significantly, the CO2 and lignin‐based polymers have successfully recycled to the monomer for a circular plastic economy by heating at 90 °C for 12 h in the presence of DBU. This process yields original monomers for another polymerization without unwanted changes in chemical structures, presenting an ultimate sustainable solution.

Disequilibrating Dynamic Polymers for Spontaneous Recyclability

Abstract:Chemical recycling of synthetic polymers is key to our future circular plastics economy1–3. Current chemical solutions rely on either catalyst design or introducing weak bonds.4–6 The former approach doesn’t tackle the thermodynamic trap of conventional plastics, while the latter usually compromises materials performances. Despite recent advances in ring-strain engineering of lactone-based polymers allowing catalyst-enabled recyclability,1,6,7 polymer-to-monomer recycling processes under mild, waste-free, and cost-affordable conditions remain a formidable challenge. Here, we report an intrinsically recyclable polymer disequilibrated by kinetic control of bulk reconstruction mediated with dynamic bonds, enabling spontaneous polymer-to-monomer conversion by direct solid-to-solid (crystal) transition. The key feature of the system is to couple two types of dynamic chemical equilibria, i.e., noncovalent self-assembly of side-chains and dynamic covalent polymerization of mainchains. We discovered that controlling the sidechain H-bond stacking geometry could be used to spatially separate the polymerizing moieties of monomers in the solid state and bias the monomer/polymer equilibrium toward the direction of depolymerization. As a result, a semi-crystalline, Nylon-like, and easy-to-prepare polymeric material can be spontaneously recycled into crystalline monomers using a mild thermal activation process (120°C), featuring quantitative recycling yield, high monomer purity (over 90%) at low-cost while avoiding the use of any solvent or catalyst during recycling. Life-cycle assessment shows a remarkably advantageous environmental footprint of this technology compared with solvent-based chemical recycling routes. These findings offer a supramolecular solution towards cost-effective closed-loop recycling of covalent polymers.

Abstract:Inverse vulcanized polymer materials have received considerable attention as a way to use sulfur, an industrial byproduct, as a starting material for synthesis. The resulting high-sulfur content polymers have also been investigated because their properties give rise to promising applications such as infrared imaging, energy storage, and heavy metal capture due to their unique structure. However, synthesis of a flexible sulfur polymer network which shows good mechanical properties combining high strength, high elongation, and high toughness is still a significant challenge. Moreover, further exploration of the properties of sulfur polymers to better understand the relationship between the polymers’ structure with their performance is still needed. Here, a range of cross-linked sulfur polymers with high tensile elongation and toughness and without losing high strength were successfully synthesized. The obtained cross-linked sulfur polymers show high solvent tolerance in most organic solvents but are demonstrated to be chemically de-cross-linked in polar solvents dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and can be re-cross-linked after removing the solvent due to the high sulfur ranks present in the polymer network. Despite the significantly improved mechanical properties, highly efficient thermal recycling performance typical of inverse vulcanized polymers was retained. Flexibility and durability, combined with chemical and thermal recycling, could open a new door for wider applications of inverse vulcanized polymers.

Abstract:The development of a controlled and reliable method to construct well-defined sulfur-containing polymers has sparked great interest in polymer science. Herein, we present the trial on the copolymerization of isothiocyanates with episulfides in the presence of organic onium salts, which provides direct access to a class of sulfur-rich polymers. This methodology has combined advantages of simple operation, no metals, mild conditions (25–100 °C), controlled polymerization performance (Mn > 105 g mol–1, Đ < 1.3), and high reactivity (turnover frequency over 1000 h–1). Abstract:The accumulation of discarded petroleum-based plastics causes serious environmental crises. Currently, recyclable polymers with neutrality in thermodynamics, such as polyesters, polycarbonates, and polyolefins, have been developed as promising alternatives to traditional petroleum-based polymers. However, the chemical recycle of these polymers usually requires high energy input and expensive catalysts. Dynamic covalent bonds, such as thioester and disulfide bonds, have emerged as building blocks for constructing recyclable polymers that can be rapidly degraded/recycled under mild conditions. In this review, we introduce representative studies on recyclable polythioesters and polydisulfides with respect to their synthetic strategies, thermodynamic manipulation, physicochemical properties, and preliminary applications. We also highlight the important role of kinetic factors played in the design of recyclable polymers. Finally, major challenges, perspectives, and future opportunities in the synthesis and applications of polythioesters/polydisulfides are discussed.
Metal-Free Alternating Copolymerization of CS 2 and Oxetane

Abstract:The conversion of CS2, which is discarded on a large scale as a pollutant, into valuable sulfur-containing polymers is of significance for both environmental and polymer science. However, the copolymerization of CS2 and cyclic ether suffers from complex polymer structures and massive byproducts. Here, we use a cooperative organocatalyst system composed of alkyl borane and onium salts for CS2 and oxetane copolymerization. Of interest, the copolymerization is highly efficient with a turnover frequency up to 1103 h–1, avoids small-molecule byproducts, and yields previously inaccessible polythiocarbonates bearing highly regular sequences. The in-chain sulfur atoms make polythiocarbonate demonstrate desirable thermal and mechanical properties, with a melting temperature of 83 °C, an ultimate tensile strength of 20.7 ± 3.1 MPa, and an elongation at break of 480 ± 20%. For the mechanism, the Lewis acid of borane activates oxetane as well as forms the borate complex with the growing anion, as revealed by density functional theory studies.

Abstract:Finding new chemistry platforms for easily recyclable polymers has become a key challenge to face environmental concerns and the growing plastics demand. Here, we report a dynamic chemistry between CO2-sourced alkylidene oxazolidones and thiols, delivering circular non-isocyanate polyurethane networks embedding N,S-acetal bonds. The production of oxazolidone monomers from CO2 is facile and scalable starting from cheap reagents. Their copolymerization with a polythiol occurs under mild conditions in the presence of a catalytic amount of acid to furnish polymer networks. The polymer structure is easily tuned by virtue of monomer design, translating into a wide panel of mechanical properties similar to commodity plastics, ranging from PDMS-like elastomers [with Young's modulus (E) of 2.9 MPa and elongation at break (εbreak) of 159%] to polystyrene-like rigid plastics (with E = 2400 MPa, εbreak = 3%). The highly dissociative nature of the N,S-acetal bonds is demonstrated and exploited to offer three different recycling scenarios to the thermosets: (1) mechanical recycling by compression molding, extrusion, or injection molding─with multiple recycling (at least 10 times) without any material property deterioration, (2) chemical recycling through depolymerization, followed by repolymerization, also applicable to composites, and (3) upcycling of two different oxazolidone-based thermosets into a single one with distinct properties. This work highlights a new facile and scalable chemical platform for designing highly dynamic polymer networks containing elusive oxazolidone motifs. The versatility of this chemistry shows great potential for the preparation of materials (including composites) of tuneable structures and properties, with multiple end-of-life scenarios.
