Abstract:In the 2 March 1979 issue of Science 203 S. J. Peale, P. Cassen and R. T. Reynolds published their paper "Melting of Io by tidal dissipation" indicating "the dissipation of tidal energy in Jupiter's moon Io is likely to have melted a major fraction of the mass." The conclusion of their paper was that "consequences of a largely molten interior may be evident in pictures of Io's surface returned by Voyager 1." Just three days after that, the Voyager 1 spacecraft would pass within 0.3 Jupiter radii of Io. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory navigation team's orbit estimation program as well as the team members themselves performed flawlessly. In regards to the optical navigation component image extraction of satellite centers in Voyager pictures taken for optical navigation at Jupiter rms post fit residuals were less than 0.25 pixels. The cognizant engineer of the Optical Navigation Image Processing System was astronomer Linda Morabito. Four days after the Voyager 1 encounter with Jupiter, after preforming image processing on a picture of Io taken by the spacecraft the day before, something anomalous emerged off the limb of Io. This historical review written by the discoverer recounts her minute-by-minute quest to identify what was a volcanic plume, the first evidence of active volcanism seen beyond Earth. Many ingredients of the account reflect historic themes in the process of scientific discovery.

Abstract:Jupiter's moon Io is known to host active volcanoes. In February and March 2007, the New Horizons spacecraft obtained a global snapshot of Io's volcanism. A 350-kilometer-high volcanic plume was seen to emanate from the Tvashtar volcano (62 degrees N, 122 degrees W), and its motion was observed. The plume's morphology and dynamics support nonballistic models of large Io plumes and also suggest that most visible plume particles condensed within the plume rather than being ejected from the source. In images taken in Jupiter eclipse, nonthermal visible-wavelength emission was seen from individual volcanoes near Io's sub-Jupiter and anti-Jupiter points. Near-infrared emission from the brightest volcanoes indicates minimum magma temperatures in the 1150- to 1335-kelvin range, consistent with basaltic composition.
Discovery of seven volcanic outbursts on Io from an IRTF observation campaign 2016 to 2022

Abstract:This study analyzes near-infrared measurements of Io, Jupiter's moon, observed over 170 nights from 2016 to early 2022 using the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). During this period, seven new volcanic outbursts, the most energetic volcanic events on Io, were discovered and characterized, increasing the total number of observed outburst events from 18 to 25. We also present simplified criteria for the thermal detection of an outburst, requiring it to be both confined to a specific location of Io and above a threshold intensity in the Lp-band (3.8 micron). Our measurements use 2 to 5 micron photometry in eclipse, Jupiter occultation, and reflected sunlight. In addition to extending the observational dataset of Io's dynamic activity, these data provide insights into the temporal and spatial distribution of outbursts on Io. Notably, all seven outbursts were detected in Io's trailing hemisphere. These include Pillan Patera and a newly discovered repeating outburst location at Acala Fluctus. We add these events to the rare category of recurring outbursts, before which Tvashtar was the only known example. We observed that another outburst at UP 254W decreased in Lp-band intensity by a factor of two in 4.5 hours. In August 2021, Io exhibited high volcanic activity when two powerful outbursts rapidly appeared, propagating East. Our findings underscore IRTF's ongoing contributions to the study of Io.

Volcanic hotspots on io: stability and longitudinal distribution

Abstract:We report the first results of a program to determine the longitudinal distribution of volcanic activity on Jupiter's satellite Io. Infrared measurements at 8.7, 10, and 20 micrometers have been taken at a variety of orbital longitudes: strong variation in the 8.7- and 10-micrometer flux with longitude demonstrates that infrared emission arising from volcanic hotspots on Io is strongly concentrated in a few locations. Analysis of these data suggests that the active volcanic regions observed by the Voyager experimenters are still active, particularly the region around the feature known as Loki. Another source of flux, although of somewhat smaller magnitude, is indicated on the opposite hemisphere. If these sources are the only major volcanic centers on Io, then current global heat flow estimates must be revised downward. However, heat flow from as yet unobserved longitudes, hotspots at high latitudes, and conducted heat flow must still be measured.

Abstract:Infrared spectral images of Jupiter's volcanic moon Io, acquired during the October and November 1999 and February 2000 flybys of the Galileo spacecraft, were used to study the thermal structure and sulfur dioxide distribution of active volcanoes. Loki Patera, the solar system's most powerful known volcano, exhibits large expanses of dark, cooling lava on its caldera floor. Prometheus, the site of long-lived plume activity, has two major areas of thermal emission, which support ideas of plume migration. Sulfur dioxide deposits were mapped at local scales and show a more complex relationship to surface colors than previously thought, indicating the presence of other sulfur compounds.

Abstract:During late 1999/early 2000, the solid state imaging experiment on the Galileo spacecraft returned more than 100 high-resolution (5 to 500 meters per pixel) images of volcanically active Io. We observed an active lava lake, an active curtain of lava, active lava flows, calderas, mountains, plateaus, and plains. Several of the sulfur dioxide-rich plumes are erupting from distal flows, rather than from the source of silicate lava (caldera or fissure, often with red pyroclastic deposits). Most of the active flows in equatorial regions are being emplaced slowly beneath insulated crust, but rapidly emplaced channelized flows are also found at all latitudes. There is no evidence for high-viscosity lava, but some bright flows may consist of sulfur rather than mafic silicates. The mountains, plateaus, and calderas are strongly influenced by tectonics and gravitational collapse. Sapping channels and scarps suggest that many portions of the upper approximately 1 kilometer are rich in volatiles.

Abstract:We present measurements of the near-infrared brightness of Io's hot spots derived from 2 to 5 μ mimaging with adaptive optics on the Keck and Gemini N telescopes. The data were obtained on 271nights between 2013 August and the end of 2018, and include nearly 1000 detections of over 75 uniquehot spots. The 100 observations obtained between 2013 and 2015 have been previously published in deKleer & de Pater the observations since the start of 2016 are presented here for the first time, andthe analysis is updated to include the full five-year data set. These data provide insight into theglobal properties of Io's volcanism. Several new hot spots and bright eruptions have been detected,and the preference for bright eruptions to occur on Io's trailing hemisphere noted in the 2013–2015data is strengthened by the larger data set and remains unexplained. Spatiotemporal patterns of Io's bright transient eruptions, 1978-2022

Abstract:This study analyzes Io's thermally detected volcanic outbursts and mini-outbursts, generally called bright transient eruptions. We examine their evolving characteristics over the history of outburst observations between the Voyager flybys in 1978 and 2022. We catalog, compare, and interpret the data of these bright transient eruptions from several spacecraft flybys and numerous ground-based observation campaigns. To test the spatiotemporal behavior of these events, we compare them to a population of randomly spaced, stochastic events with an equal likelihood of occurrence anywhere on Io's surface. We find that the aggregate of all outbursts is consistent with a random distribution across Io, whereas mini-outbursts strongly prefer the trailing hemisphere (180 to 360 W). On shorter timescales, however, outbursts show a significant change in spatiotemporal behavior before and after the year 2012. Outbursts from 1995 to 2007 favor the northern leading hemisphere, while outbursts from 2013 to 2021 favor the southern trailing hemisphere. These temporally separated clusters of outbursts are remarkably similar to Io's two primary mountainous regions, indicating that outbursts may be related to mountain-forming activity. These trends show how bright transient eruptions are distinct from Io's other forms of volcanism. These could be essential constraints to assess models of Io's interior heat transport between tidal generation and volcanic distribution.

Abstract:Driven by tidal heating, Io’s extreme volcanism has created a young, impact crater–free surface dominated by hundreds of active volcanic centres. From these volcanoes erupt voluminous, low-viscosity, high-temperature silicate lavas. Volcanic plumes, from venting gas and mobilised surface ices (primarily SO2 and S), contribute to Io’s thin atmosphere. Away from volcanoes, SO2 ice on the surface alternately sublimes during the daytime and condenses during eclipses and at night, resulting in a strong day/night atmospheric dichotomy. Sunlight and radiation bombardment at high altitude breaks the gas molecules apart, leading to the formation of SO, O, O2, S, K, Na, and Cl. These atoms reside as both neutral and charged particles in clouds that are found along Io’s orbit around Jupiter.

Abstract:The New Horizons (NH) spacecraft observed Io's aurora in eclipse on four occasions during spring 2007. NH Alice ultraviolet spectroscopy and concurrent Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet imaging in eclipse investigate the relative contribution of volcanoes to Io's atmosphere and its interaction with Jupiter's magnetosphere. Auroral brightness and morphology variations after eclipse ingress and egress reveal changes in the relative contribution of sublimation and volcanic sources to the atmosphere. Brightnesses viewed at different geometries are best explained by a dramatic difference between the dayside and nightside atmospheric density. Far-ultraviolet aurora morphology reveals the influence of plumes on Io's electrodynamic interaction with Jupiter's magnetosphere. Comparisons to detailed simulations of Io's aurora indicate that volcanoes supply 1 to 3% of the dayside atmosphere.

Abstract:Since volcanic activity was first discovered on Io from Voyager images in 1979, changes on Io's surface have been monitored from both spacecraft and ground‐based telescopes. Here, we present the highest spatial resolution images of Io ever obtained from a ground‐based telescope. These images, acquired by the SHARK‐VIS instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope, show evidence of a major resurfacing event on Io's trailing hemisphere. When compared to the most recent spacecraft images, the SHARK‐VIS images show that a plume deposit from a powerful eruption at Pillan Patera has covered part of the long‐lived Pele plume deposit. Although this type of resurfacing event may be common on Io, few have been detected due to the rarity of spacecraft visits and the previously low spatial resolution available from Earth‐based telescopes. The SHARK‐VIS instrument ushers in a new era of high resolution imaging of Io's surface using adaptive optics at visible wavelengths.

Abstract:Infrared observations of Io during the 1986 apparition of Jupiter indicate that a large eruptive event occurred on the leading side of Io on 7 August 1986, Universal Time. Measurements made at 4.8, 8.7, and 20 micrometers suggest that the source of the event was about 15 kilometers in radius with a model temperature of approximately 900 Kelvin. Together with previously reported events, these measurements indicate that high-temperature volcanic activity on the leading side of Io may be more frequent than previously thought. The inferred temperature is significantly above the boiling point of sulfur in a vacuum(715 Kelvin) and thus constitutes strong evidence for active silicate volcanism on the surface of Io.

Abstract:The Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) instrument aboard Juno has allowed clear, high-resolution imaging of Io's polar volcanoes. We have used data from JIRAM's M-band (4.78 micron) imager from eleven Juno orbits to construct a global map of volcanic flux. This map provides insight into the spatial distribution of volcanoes and the ways in which high- and low-latitude volcanoes differ. Using spherical harmonic analysis, we have quantitatively compared our volcanic flux map to the surface heat flow distribution expected by modeling data of Io's tidal heat deposition (de Kleer et al. 2019). Systems of bright volcanoes were confirmed at high latitudes. Our study finds that both poles are more active than previous studies have suggested, although the south pole was viewed too infrequently to establish reliable long-term trends. While none of the tidal heat flow models match well, the asthenospheric heating model agrees best with the observed volcanic flux.

Abstract:Io's atmosphere is predominately SO2 sustained by a combination of volcanic outgassing and sublimation. The loss from the atmosphere is the main mass source for Jupiter's large magnetosphere. Previous studies attributed various transient phenomena in Io's environment and Jupiter's magnetosphere to a sudden change in the mass loss from the atmosphere supposedly triggered by a change in volcanic activity. Since the gas in volcanic plumes does not escape directly, such causal correlation would require a transient volcano-induced change in atmospheric abundance, which has never been observed so far. Here we report four observations of atmospheric SO2 and NaCl obtained with the IRAM NOEMA interferometer. These observations are compared to measurements of volcanic hot spots and Io's neutral and plasma environment. We find a stable NaCl column density in Io's atmosphere. The SO2 column density derived for December 2016 is about 30% lower compared to the period of March to April 2017. This increase in SO2 from December 2016 to March 2017 might be related to increasing volcanic activity observed at several sites in spring 2017, but the stability of the volcanic trace gas NaCl and resulting decrease in NaCl/SO2 ratio do not support this interpretation. Observed dimmings in both the sulfur ion torus and Na neutral cloud suggest rather a decrease in mass loading in the period of increasing SO2 abundance. The dimming Na brightness and stable atmospheric NaCl furthermore dispute an earlier suggested positive correlation of the sodium cloud and the hot spot activity at Loki Patara, which considerably increased in this period. The environment of Io overall appears to be in a quiescent state, preventing further conclusions. Only Jupiter's aurora morphology underwent several short-term changes, which are apparently unrelated to Io's quiescent environment or the relatively stable atmosphere.
A comprehensive investigation of the Galilean moon, Io, by tracing mass and energy flows

Abstract:Io is the most volcanically-active object in the solar system. The moon ejects a tonne per second of sulphur-rich gases that fill the vast magnetosphere of Jupiter and drives million-amp electrical currents that excite strong auroral emissions. We present the case for including a detailed study of Io within Voyage 2050 either as a standalone mission or as a contribution to a NASA New Frontiers mission, possibly within a Solar System theme centred around current evolutionary or dynamical processes. A comprehensive investigation will provide answers to many outstanding questions and will simultaneously provide information on processes that have formed the landscapes of several other objects in the past. A mission investigating Io will also study processes that have shaped the Earth, Moon, terrestrial planets, outer planet moons, and potentially extrasolar planets. The aim would be simple - tracing the mass and energy flows in the Io-Jupiter system.

Abstract:Observations of the optical extreme ultraviolet spectrum of the Jupiter planetary system during the Voyager 1 encounter have revealed previously undetected physical processes of significant proportions. Bright emission lines of S III, S IV, and O III indicating an electron temperature of 10(5) K have been identified in preliminary analyses of the Io plasma torus spectrum. Strong auroral atomic and molecular hydrogen emissions have been observed in the polar regions of Jupiter near magnetic field lines that map the torus into the atmosphere of Jupiter. The observed resonance scattering of solar hydrogen Lyman alpha by the atmosphere of Jupiter and the solar occultation experiment suggest a hot thermosphere (>/= 1000 K) wvith a large atomic hydrogen abundance. A stellar occultation by Ganymede indicates that its atmosphere is at most an exosphere.

Abstract:We present first results derived from the largest collection of contemporaneously recorded Jovian sodium nebula and Io plasma torus (IPT) in [S II] 673.1 nm images assembled to date. The data were recorded by the Planetary Science Institute's Io Input/Output observatory (IoIO) and provide important context to Io geologic and atmospheric studies as well as the Juno mission and supporting observations. Enhancements in the observed emission are common, typically lasting 1 -- 3 months, such that the average flux of material from Io is determined by the enhancements, not any quiescent state. The enhancements are not seen at periodicities associated with modulation in solar insolation of Io's surface, thus physical process(es) other than insolation-driven sublimation must ultimately drive the bulk of Io's atmospheric escape. We suggest that geologic activity, likely involving volcanic plumes, drives escape.

Abstract:Extreme ultraviolet spectral observations of the Jovian planetary system made during the Voyager 2 encounter have extended our knowledge of many of the phenomena and physical processes discovered by the Voyager 1 ultraviolet spectrometer. In the 4 months between encounters, the radiation from Io's plasma torus has increased in intensity by a factor of about 2. This change was accompanied by a decrease in plasma temperature of about 30 percent. The high-latitude auroral zones have been positively associated with the magnetic projection of the plasma torus onto the planet. Emission in molecular hydrogen bands has been detected from the equatorial regions of Jupiter, indicating planetwide electron precipitation. Hydrogen Lyman alpha from the dark side of the planet has been measured at an intensity of about 1 kilorayleigh. An observation of the occultation of alpha Leonis by Jupiter was carried out successfully and the data are being analyzed in detail.

Abstract:The capability to observe temporal changes on Io's surface at optical wavelengths has recently been demonstrated by Conrad et al. (2024, https://doi.org/10.1029/2024GL108609) using new instrumentation at the Large Binocular Telescope. Monitoring of Io's surface morphology would be impactful since preexisting metrics of the degree, location and composition of Io's plume activities are severely limited. Relationships with external data sets appear especially fruitful. Comparisons with spatially resolved data on gas distributions and thermal hots spots would better characterize composition and chemistry in Io's volcanic plumes. Comparisons with measurements remote from Io are posed to advance our understanding of atmospheric escape and how eruptions connect to transient enhancements at disparate size and time scales in the extended neutral clouds and plasma torus.
