Abstract:Motor vehicle emissions usually constitute the most significant source of ultrafine particles (diameter <0.1μm) in an urban environment. Zhu et al. (J. Air Waste Manage. Assoc., 2002, accepted for publication) conducted systematic measurements of the concentration and size distribution of ultrafine particles in the vicinity of a highway dominated by gasoline vehicle. The present study compares these previous measurements with those made on Interstate 710 freeway in Los Angeles. The 710 freeway was selected because more than 25% of the vehicles are heavy-duty diesel trucks. Particle number concentration and size distribution in the size range from 6 to 220nm were measured by a condensation particle counter and a scanning mobility particle sizer, respectively. Measurements were taken at 17, 20, 30, 90, 150, and 300m downwind and 200m upwind from the center of the freeway. At each sampling location, concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and black carbon (BC) were also measured by a Dasibi CO monitor and an Aethalometer, respectively. The range of average concentration of CO, BC and total particle number concentration at 17m was 1.9–2.6ppm, 20.3–24.8μg/m3, 1.8×105–3.5×105/cm3, respectively. Relative concentration of CO, BC and particle number decreased exponentially and tracked each other well as one moves away from the freeway. Both atmospheric dispersion and coagulation appears to contribute to the rapid decrease in particle number concentration and change in particle size distribution with increasing distance from the freeway. Average traffic flow during the sampling periods was 12,180 vehicles/h with more than 25% of vehicles being heavy-duty diesel trucks. Ultrafine particle number concentration measured at 300m downwind from the freeway was indistinguishable from upwind background concentration. These data may be used to estimate exposure to ultrafine particles in the vicinity of major highways.

Abstract:Standard agency theory suggests that rational voters will vote to re-elect politicians who deliver favorable outcomes. A second implication is that rational voters will not support a politician because of good outcomes unrelated to the politician's actions. Specifically, rational voters should try to filter signal from noise, both in order to avoid electing incompetent, but lucky politicians, and to maximize the link between their votes and optimal incentives. This paper provides insight into the information processing capacities of voters, by measuring the extent to which they irrationally reward state governors for economic fluctuations that are plausibly unrelated to gubernatorial actions. Simple tests of relative performance evaluation reveal that voters evaluate their state's economic performance relative to the national economy. However, these tests only provide evidence of rule-of-thumb performance filtering. More sophisticated tests reveal that voters in oil-producing states tend to re-elect incumbent governors during oil price rises, and vote them out of office when the oil price drops. Similarly, voters in pro-cyclical states are consistently fooled into re-electing incumbents during national booms, only to dump them during national recessions. Consistent with an emerging behavioral literature, this suggests that voters make systematic attribution errors and are best characterized as quasi-rational.
Simultaneous Measurements of Particle Number Size Distributions at Ground Level and 260 M on a Meteorological Tower in Urban Beijing, China

Abstract:Abstract. Despite extensive studies into the characterization of particle number size distributions at ground level, real-time measurements above the urban canopy in the megacity of Beijing have never been performed to date. Here we conducted the first simultaneous measurements of size-resolved particle number concentrations at ground level and 260 m in urban Beijing from 22 August to 30 September. Our results showed overall similar temporal variations in number size distributions between ground level and 260 m, yet periods with significant differences were also observed. Particularly, accumulation-mode particles were highly correlated (r2 = 0. 85) at the two heights, while Aitken-mode particles presented more differences. Detailed analysis suggests that the vertical differences in number concentrations strongly depended on particle size, and particles with a mobility diameter between 100 and 200 nm generally showed higher concentrations at higher altitudes. Particle growth rates and condensation sinks were also calculated, which were 3.2 and 3.6 nm h−1, and 2.8  ×  10−2 and 2.9  ×  10−2 s−1, at ground level and 260 m, respectively. By linking particle growth with aerosol composition, we found that organics appeared to play an important role in the early stage of the growth (09:00–12:00 LT) while sulfate was also important during the later period. Positive matrix factorization of size-resolved number concentrations identified three common sources at ground level and 260 m, including a factor associated with new particle formation and growth events (NPEs), and two secondary factors that represent photochemical processing and regional transport. Cooking emission was found to have a large contribution to small particles and showed much higher concentration at ground level than 260 m in the evening. These results imply that investigation of NPEs at ground level in megacities needs to consider the influences of local cooking emissions. The impacts of regional emission controls on particle number concentrations were also illustrated. Our results showed that regional emission controls have a dominant impact on accumulation-mode particles by decreasing gas precursors and particulate matter loadings, and hence suppressing particle growth. In contrast, the influences on Aitken particles were much smaller due to the enhanced new particle formation (NPF) events.

Abstract:Diurnal variation of number size distribution ( particle size 3 - 800 nm) and modal parameters ( geometric standard deviation, geometric mean diameter and modal aerosol particle concentration) in a highly polluted urban environment was investigated during October and November 2002 in New Delhi, India. Continuous monitoring for more than two weeks with the time resolution of 10 min was conducted using a Differential Mobility Particle Sizer ( twin DMPS). The results indicated clear increase in Aitken mode ( 25 - 100 nm) particles during traffic peak hours, but towards the evenings there were more Aitken mode particles compared to the mornings. Also high concentrations of accumulation mode particles (> 100 nm) were detected in the evenings only. In the evenings, biomass/refuse burning and cooking are possible sources beside the traffic. We have also shown that nucleation events are possible in this kind of atmosphere even though as clear nucleation events as observed in rural sites could not be detected. The formation rate of 3 nm particles (J3) of the observed events varied from 3.3 to 13.9 cm(-3) s(-1) and the growth rate varied from 11.6 to 18.1 nmh(-1) showing rapid growth and high formation rate, which seems to be typical in urban areas.

Abstract:This study is the first to use two identical Fast Mobility Particle Sizers for simultaneous measurement of particle number size distributions (PNSDs) at a street site and a rooftop site within 500 m distance in wintertime and springtime to investigate new particle formation (NPF) in Beijing. The collected datasets at 1 s time resolution allow deduction of the freshly emitted traffic particle signal from the measurements at the street site and thereby enable the evaluation of the effects on NPF in an urban atmosphere through a site-by-site comparison. The number concentrations of 8 to 20 nm newly formed particles and the apparent formation rate (FR) in the springtime were smaller at the street site than at the rooftop site. In contrast, NPF was enhanced in the wintertime at the street site with FR increased by a factor of 3 to 5, characterized by a shorter NPF time and higher new particle yields than at the rooftop site. Our results imply that the street canyon likely exerts distinct effects on NPF under warm or cold ambient temperature conditions because of on-road vehicle emissions, i.e., stronger condensation sinks that may be responsible for the reduced NPF in the springtime but efficient nucleation and partitioning of gaseous species that contribute to the enhanced NPF in the wintertime. The occurrence or absence of apparent growth for new particles with mobility diameters larger than 10 nm was also analyzed. The oxidization of biogenic organics in the presence of strong photochemical reactions is suggested to play an important role in growing new particles with diameters larger than 10 nm, but sulfuric acid is unlikely to be the main species for the apparent growth. However, the number of datasets used in this study is relatively small, and larger datasets are essential to draw a general conclusion.

Abstract:The mass concentrations of PM2.5 (particles with aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 um), number concentration of ultrafine particles (UFP, particles with aerodynamic diameter < 100 nm), concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as mass concentrations of black carbon (BC, results from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, usually consists of several linked carbon atoms, commonly referred to as soot ) were measured near the Peking University (PKU) campus in Beijing from December 10th to December 23rd, 2011. Correlation between UFP number concentrations and PM2.5 mass concentrations, as well as PM2.5 mass concentrations and BC mass concentrations were determined while taking into consideration the local meteorological conditions and traffic densities determined from recorded video footage. Traffic emissions were calculated using ultrafine particle number concentration (PNC) and CO2 concentrations. The PM2.5 mass concentration, PNC, BC mass concentration as well as calculated traffic emission data were compared with existing data for the Los Angeles metropolitan region. The differences and similarities between the two data sets were compared and discussed.No correlation was found between PNC and PM2.5 mass concentrations. However, a high correlation between BC and PM2.5 mass concentrations was found. Also, correlations were identified between local meteorological conditions such as wind direction and PNC, PM2.5, and BC mass concentrations near roadways, especially when the site was downwind of local traffic. No correlation was found between wind speed and PNC, although strong correlations were found between wind speed and PM2.5, as well as BC mass concentrations. Days where both PM2.5 mass concentrations and PNC were higher at the control site were observed to be wind direction dependent, indicating the detection of regional emission sources. A strong correlation between PM2.5 mass concentrations and local visibility was also demonstrated. In terms of traffic, total traffic had almost no correlation with PNC. However, total diesel traffic was found to have some correlation to PNC, with higher diesel vehicle volume correlating to higher PNC. Finally, from the comparison between Los Angeles and Beijing data sets, Beijing tends to have higher emission factors, as well as near roadway PNC and PM2.5 mass concentrations, after controlling for wind direction.Data generated from this study could be used to model near roadway exposures to PM2.5 as well as UFP, especially from an occupational exposure standpoint for roadside workers such as food stand workers, traffic directing personnel, among others.
Submicron Aerosols at Thirteen Diversified Sites in China: Size Distribution, New Particle Formation and Corresponding Contribution to Cloud Condensation Nuclei Production

Abstract:Understanding the particle number size distributions in diversified atmospheric environments is important in order to design mitigation strategies related to submicron particles and their effects on regional air quality, haze and human health. In this study, we conducted 15 different field measurement campaigns between 2007 and 2011 at 13 individual sites in China, including five urban sites, four regional sites, three coastal/background sites and one ship cruise measurement along eastern coastline of China. Size resolved particles were measured in the 15–600 nm size range. The median particle number concentrations (PNCs) were found to vary in the range of 1.1−2.2 × 104 cm−3 at urban sites, 0.8−1.5 × 104 cm−3 at regional sites, 0.4−0.6 × 104 cm−3 at coastal/background sites, and 0.5 × 104 cm−3 during cruise measurement. Peak diameters at each of these sites varied greatly from 24 to 115 nm. Particles in the 15–25 nm (nucleation mode), 25–100 nm (Aitken mode) and 100–600 nm (accumulation mode) range showed different characteristics at each sites, indicating the features of primary emissions and secondary formation in these diversified atmospheric environments. Diurnal variations show a build-up of accumulation mode particles belt at regional sites, suggesting the contribution of regional secondary aerosol pollution. Frequencies of new particle formation (NPF) events were much higher at urban and regional sites than at coastal sites and during cruise measurement. The average growth rates (GRs) of nucleation mode particles were 8.0–10.9 nm h−1 at urban sites, 7.4–13.6 nm h−1 at regional sites and 2.8–7.5 nm h−1 at coastal sites and during cruise measurement. The high gaseous precursors and strong oxidation at urban and regional sites not only favored the formation of particles, but also accelerated the growth rate of the nucleation mode particles. No significant difference in condensation sink (CS) during NPF days were observed among different site types, suggesting that the NPF events in background areas were more influenced by the pollutant transport. In addition, average contributions of NPF events to potential cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) at 0.2% super-saturation in the afternoon of all sampling days were calculated as 11% and 6% at urban sites and regional sites, respectively. On the other hand, NPF events at coastal sites and during cruise measurement had little impact on potential production of CCN. This study provides a large data set of particle size distribution in diversified atmosphere of China, improving our general understanding of emission, secondary formation, new particle formation and corresponding CCN activity of submicron aerosols in Chinese environments.
Observations of new particle formation, modal growth rates, and direct emissions of sub-10 nm particles in an urban environment

Abstract:Ultrafine particles with diameters less than 100 nm suspended in the air are a topic of interest in air quality and climate sciences. Sub-10 nm particles are of additional interest due to their health effects and contribution to particle growth processes. Ambient measurements were carried out at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC between April to June 2019 and November 2019 to May 2020 to investigate the temporal variability of size distribution and number concentration of ultrafine particles. A mobile lab was deployed between March and May 2020 to characterize the spatial distribution of sub-10 nm particle number concentration. New particle formation and growth events were observed regularly. Also observed were direct emissions of sub-10 nm particles. Analysis against meteorological variables, gas-phase species, and particle concentrations show that the sub-10nm particles dominated number concentration during periods of low planetary boundary layer height, low solar radiation, and northeast winds. The spatial patterns observed during mobile deployments suggest that multiple temporally stable and spatially confined point sources of sub-10 nm particles are present within the city. These sources likely include the campus utility plants and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Additionally, the timing of data collection allowed for investigation of variations in the urban aerosol number size distribution due to reduced economic activity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:The size-segregated chemical composition of atmospheric aerosol particles (aerodynamic diameter Dp(aer) - 0.05-10 mu m) Was Studied to reveal differences between seasons (winter/summer), air mass origins (East/West/North), and days of the week (weekday/Sunday). The goal was to identify the different particle emission sources for the first time at a kerbside in the city of Dresden, Germany.Ultra-fine particles (Dp(aer) = 0.05-0.14 mu m, 12% of PM10) consisted of approximately 80% OM (organic matter) and EC (elemental carbon), while fine particles (Dp(aer) = 0.14-1.2 mu m) comprised about 55% ionic compounds with 44% OM and EC. The coarse fraction (DPaer = 1.2-10 mu m) consisted of approximately 65% ions/OM/EC and 20% metal oxides.Ph, Zn, and Cu showed crustal enrichment factors (CEFSi) > 100 for all particle sizes indicating strong anthropogenic influence. The Zn source was coal burning rather than traffic emissions. Doubled concentrations in winter were likely caused by coal combustion (Ph) and biomass burning (K), but also by a lower mixing layer height. Air masses from the East caused higher Ph and K concentrations. The origin of air masses had almost no influence on Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Zn and Ca, Si, Ti, indicating local sources such as traffic and heating. Possible actions against particle emissions are discussed. Investigating the Effect of Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) Emission Reduction on Surface-Level Ozone (O3) during Summer across the UK

Abstract:UK air pollutant data collected over a 10-year period (2010–2019) from 46 sites with Urban Traffic, Urban Background, Suburban Background, Rural Background, and Urban Industrial environmental types were analysed to study the relationships between [NO] vs. [PM2.5] and [O3] vs. [PM2.5] during the summer for each site type. These results were used to describe the consequence of recent PM2.5 reductions on NO and O3 concentrations at different site types across the UK. The strongest positive [NO] vs. [PM2.5] correlation was observed for the Urban Traffic site type overall, but it displayed the weakest positive [O3] vs. [PM2.5] correlation. Analysis of individual Urban Traffic sites revealed an overall negative [O3] vs. [PM2.5] gradient at the London Marylebone Road (LMR) site. A sharp 35% PM2.5 decrease occurred at LMR between 2011 and 2015 before annual mean concentrations plateaued. Further examination of annual correlations revealed negative [O3] vs. [PM2.5] gradients in each year directly proceeding the sharp 35% PM2.5 decrease at LMR. NOx fluctuations were minimal and accompanied by comparable volatile organic compound (VOC) decreases; thus, VOC-limited chemistry at LMR was deemed to not be the primary cause of O3 increases. Instead, PM2.5 reductions are suggested to be a more significant factor in causing O3 increases, as suppression of O3 production by PM2.5 chemistry decreases with declining [PM2.5]. The remaining two Urban Traffic sites in Birmingham did not display a negative [O3] vs. [PM2.5] correlation in the years studied. This was partly ascribed to the Birmingham measurement sites not being under the influence of the street canyon effect like LMR. Principal attribution was to the lower-average absolute initial PM2.5 concentrations and absence of a significant (>26%) continuous mean PM2.5 decline of greater than 2 years. This study therefore proposed a threshold initial PM2.5 concentration (t) above which O3 suppression by PM2.5 chemistry is sufficient to induce O3 increases when average PM2.5 concentrations significantly decline (by > 26% across > 2 years), where 17 μg m-3 < t < 26 μg m-3. Extending this analysis to additional cities across the UK as sufficient data become available would allow refinement of the proposed threshold and improved understanding of the influence from the street canyon effect. These results inform future air pollution policies, in the UK and across the globe, in which further joint reductions of PM2.5 and O3 are crucial to achieve maximum benefits to human health.

Contributions of traffic emissions and new particle formation to the ultrafine particle size distribution in the megacity of Beijing

Abstract:The important role of traffic emissions in air pollution has been widely recognized. However, the corresponding contributions to the ultrafine particle distribution and new particle formation (NPF) are poorly understood due to the mixed influences of various sources. Measurements of particle evolution and NPF were made at a heavy traffic site near the 5th Ring Road of Beijing from August 2017 to October 2019. A positive matrix factorization receptor model (version 5.0) consisting of the log-normal fit method and the k-means clustering method was used to identify and quantify the major sources of particle number concentrations. Based on the characteristics of NPF, additional analyses were performed to identify formation sources, including back-trajectory clustering and correlations between auxiliary variables and the relative contributions of all resolved factors. Traffic emissions mainly influenced Aitken mode (25–100 nm) particles (> 60%), and NPF significantly contributed to the ultrafine particle distribution (47.2%). Additionally, regional transport notably affected the occurrence of NPF at the observation site, with northwest airmass transport influencing the nucleation mode the most and southeast airmass transport influencing the Aitken mode the most.

Abstract:Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) data of similar continuously monitored species at two air monitoring sites with different characteristics within the City of Toronto were used to gauge the intra-city variations in the PM composition over a largely concurrent period spanning two years. One location was <8 m from the side of a major highway while the other was an urban background location. For the first time, multi-time resolution factor analysis was applied to dispersion-normalized concentrations to identify and quantify source contributions while reducing the influence of local meteorology. These factors were particulate sulphate (pSO4), particulate nitrate (pNO3), secondary organic aerosols (SOA), crustal matter (CrM) that were common to both sites, a hydrocarbon-like organic matter (HOM) exclusive to the urban background site, three black carbon related factors (BC, BC-HOM at the highway site, and a brown carbon rich factor (BC-BrC) at the urban background site), biomass burning organic matter (BBOM) and brake dust (BD) factors exclusive to the highway site. The PM2.5 composition was different between these two locations, over only a 10 km distance. The sum of SOA, pSO4 and pNO3 at the urban background site averaged 57% of the PM2.5 mass while the same species represented 43% of the average PM2.5 mass at the highway site. Local or site-specific factors may be of greater interest for control policy design. Thus, regression analyses with potential explanatory, site-specific variables were performed for results from the highway site. Three model approaches were explored: multiple linear regression (MLR), regression with a generalized reduced gradient (GRG) algorithm, and a generalized additive model (GAM). GAM gave the largest fraction of variance for the locally-found factors at the highway site. Heavy-duty vehicles were most important for explaining the black carbon (BC and BC-HOM) factors. Light-duty vehicles were dominant for the brake dust (BD) factor. The auxiliary modelling for the local factors showed that the traffic-related factors likely originated along the main roadways at their respective sites while the more regional factors, - pSO4, pNO3, SOA, - had sources that were both regional and local in origin and with contributions that varied seasonally. These results will be useful in understanding ambient particulate matter sources on a city scale that will support air quality management planning.
Behaviour of traffic emitted semi-volatile and intermediate volatility organic compounds within the urban atmosphere

Abstract:Particulate matter originated from traffic has attracted major interest over the last few years. The semi-volatile organic component of the particles may evaporate with dispersion away from the emission source, creating vapour which may oxidise to form secondary organic aerosol. Air samples were collected from a street canyon, the adjacent park and an urban background site during the winter-spring period in central London, UK. Emissions of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) ranging from C10 to C36 in both the gas phase and particle phase were measured by using thermal desorption coupled to comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TD-GC × GC-ToF-MS). Main compound groups identified and quantified were grouped alkanes (n-alkanes and branched alkanes), monocyclic alkanes, bicyclic alkanes and monocyclic aromatics. The carbon preference index (CPI) of n-alkanes was estimated to distinguish the emission sources. Pearson correlations between I/SVOCs and traffic tracers (black carbon, NOx and benzene) in different locations were compared to analyse the influence of this emission source. The results indicate that while the major emission source at the roadside site is traffic, the lower correlations at background sites are indicative of other source contributions and/or differential reactivity of compounds. Gas-particle phase partitioning of n-alkanes is evaluated and compared between sites. The potential influence of gas phase I/SVOCs upon OH reactivity and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation is estimated and found to be relatively small.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the results and analysis of a recent field campaign in August 2007 investigating the impacts of emissions from transportation on air quality and community concentrations in Beijing, China. We conducted measurements in three different environments, on-road, roadside and ambient. The carbon monoxide, black carbon and ultrafine particle number emission factors for on-road light-duty vehicles are derived to be 95gkg−1-fuel, 0.3gkg−1-fuel and 1.8×1015 particleskg−1-fuel, respectively. The emission factors for on-road heavy-duty vehicles are 50gkg−1-fuel, 1.3gkg−1-fuel and 1.1×1016 particleskg−1-fuel, respectively. The carbon monoxide emission factors from this study agree with those derived from remote sensing and on-board vehicle emission testing systems in China. The on-road black carbon and particle number emission factors for Chinese vehicles are reported for the first time in the literature. Strong traffic impacts can be observed from the concentrations measured in these different environments. Most clear is a reflection of diesel truck traffic activity in black carbon concentrations. The comparison of the particle size distributions measured at the three environments suggests that the traffic is a major source of ultrafine particles. A four-day traffic control experiment conducted by the Beijing Government as a pilot to test the effectiveness of proposed controls was found to be effective in reducing extreme concentrations that occurred at both on-road and ambient environments.
The impact of traffic on air quality in Ireland: insights from the simultaneous kerbside and suburban monitoring of submicron aerosols

Abstract:Abstract. To evaluate the impact of traffic on urban air quality, the chemical composition of submicron aerosols (PM1) and sources of organic aerosol (OA) were simultaneously investigated at a kerbside site in the Dublin city center and a residential site in suburban Dublin (∼ 5 km apart) from 4 September to 9 November in 2018. Through the detailed comparison of a 1-week nonheating period from 10 to 17 September and a 1-week heating period from 27 October to 4 November, black carbon (BC) was found to be the most dominant component (38 %–55 % or 5.6–7.1 μg m−3) of PM1 at the kerbside, while OA was the most important (46 %–64 % of PM1 or 1.0–8.1 μg m−3) at the residential site. The daily and weekly cycle of BC at the kerbside during the nonheating period pointed to the major source of vehicular emissions, consistent with that for nitrogen oxides (NOx). However, traffic emissions were found to have a minor impact on air quality at the residential site, due to its distance from traffic sources and the effects of wind speed and wind direction. As a result of vehicular emissions and the street canyon effect, the kerbside increment (from the urban background) ratio of up to 25 : 1 was found for BC during the nonheating period but reduced to 10 : 1 during the heating period due to the additional sources of solid fuel burning impacting the air quality at both sites simultaneously. OA source analysis shows only 16 %–28 % (0.9–1.0 μg m−3; upper limit for traffic due to the additional heating source of hydrocarbon-like OA – HOA) of OA at the kerbside associated with vehicular emissions, with higher contributions from cooking (18 %–36 % or 1.2 μg m−3), solid fuel burning (38 % or 2.4 μg m−3; resolved only during the heating period), and oxygenated OA (29 %–37 % or 1.2–1.9 μg m−3). At the residential site, solid fuel burning contributed to 60 % (4.9 μg m−3) of OA during the heating period, while oxygenated OA (OOA) accounted for almost 65 % (0.6 μg m−3) of OA during the nonheating period. Based on simultaneous investigations of PM1 at different urban settings (i.e., residential versus kerbside), this study highlights the temporal and spatial variability of sources within the Dublin city center and the need for additional aerosol characterization studies to improve targeted mitigation solutions for greater impact on urban air quality. Moreover, traffic and residential heating may hold different implications for health and climate, as indicated by the significant increment of BC at the kerbside and the large geographic impact of OA from residential heating at both the kerbside and residential sites.

Abstract:Simultaneous measurements of on-road and in-vehicle NO and NO2 levels, particle number concentrations (PNCs), and particles size distributions were performed while driving using a test vehicle equipped with real-time sensors. The results obtained on regional roads showed that heavy-duty vehicles in traffic seem to have a major impact on on-road air quality. Measurements on highways that included a 10km tunnel and a 2km uphill section of road indicated that sub-50nm particles have different features from the other species because of their higher volatility. The other species showed quite high on-road concentrations in the tunnel. In-vehicle conditions were made similar to the on-road ones by setting the air conditioning (AC) mode to the fresh air mode. The in-vehicle NO2 concentration in the tunnel was over 0.50ppmV, which is almost five times higher than the 1-hour ambient air quality standard proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). In sections other than the tunnel, the in-vehicle NO2 concentration was almost the same as the 1-hour WHO standard. Higher on-road NO2/NOx ratios than those of exhaust gases and different behavior of sub-50nm particles from other species suggested that NO2 and sub-50nm particles were mainly due to secondary products formed by atmospheric reactions.
Evolution of Vehicle Exhaust Particles in the Atmosphere

Abstract:Aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) measurements are used to characterize the evolution of exhaust particulate matter (PM) properties near and downwind of vehicle sources. The AMS provides time-resolved chemically speciated mass loadings and mass-weighted size distributions of nonrefractory PM smaller than 1 microm (NRPM1). Source measurements of aircraft PM show that black carbon particles inhibit nucleation by serving as condensation sinks for the volatile and semi-volatile exhaust gases. Real-world source measurements of ground vehicle PM are obtained by deploying an AMS aboard a mobile laboratory. Characteristic features of the exhaust PM chemical composition and size distribution are discussed. PM mass and number concentrations are used with above-background gas-phase carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations to calculate on-road emission factors for individual vehicles. Highly variable ratios between particle number and mass concentrations are observed for individual vehicles. NRPM1 mass emission factors measured for on-road diesel vehicles are approximately 50% lower than those from dynamometer studies. Factor analysis of AMS data (FA-AMS) is applied for the first time to map variations in exhaust PM mass downwind of a highway. In this study, above-background vehicle PM concentrations are highest close to the highway and decrease by a factor of 2 by 200 m away from the highway. Comparison with the gas-phase CO2 concentrations indicates that these vehicle PM mass gradients are largely driven by dilution. Secondary aerosol species do not show a similar gradient in absolute mass concentrations; thus, their relative contribution to total ambient PM mass concentrations increases as a function of distance from the highway. FA-AMS of single particle and ensemble data at an urban receptor site shows that condensation of these secondary aerosol species onto vehicle exhaust particles results in spatial and temporal evolution of the size and composition of vehicle exhaust PM on urban and regional scales.

Abstract:The importance of street traffic and meteorological conditions on the concentrations of particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 10 mu m (PM(10)) was studied in the city of Munster in northwest Germany. The database consisted of meteorological data, data of PM(10) mass concentrations and fine particle number (6225 nm diameter) concentrations, and traffic intensity data as counted with tally hand counters at a four- to six-lane road. On working days, a significant correlation could be found between the diurnal mean PM(10) mass concentration and vehicle number. The lower number of heavy-duty vehicles compared with passenger cars contributed more to the particle number concentration on working days than on weekend days. On weekends, when the vehicle number was very low, the correlation between PM(10) mass concentration and vehicle number changed completely. Other sources of PM and the meteorology dominated the PM concentration. Independent of the weekday, by decreasing the traffic by approximately 99% during late-night hours, the PM(10) concentration was reduced by 12% of the daily mean value. A correlation between PM(10) and the particle number concentration was found for each weekday. In this study, meteorological parameters, including the atmospheric stability of the boundary layer, were also accounted for. The authors deployed artificial neural networks to achieve more information on the influence of various meteorological parameters, traffic, and the day of the week. A multilayer perceptron network showed the best results for predicting the PM(10) concentration, with the correlation coefficient being 0.72. The influence of relative humidity, temperature, and wind was strong, whereas the influence of atmospheric stability and the traffic parameters was weak. Although traffic contributes a constant amount of particles in a daily and weekly cycle, it is the meteorology that drives most of the variability.
