Abstract:Tourism has played a pivotal role in the recovery of the global economy, particularly following the easing of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. The image of a city affects tourists' travel satisfaction, and building façades are an important part of the city's image. The lack of correlation research as well as methodological and quantitative support for the correlation between building façade design elements and tourists' travel satisfaction has left architects and city decision-makers are still uncertain about which building façade design elements can be utilized to enhance the city's travel satisfaction. Using four residential projects in Amsterdam and Milan, Europe, as examples, we use Importance-Performance Analysis and Three-Factor Theory (IPA-KANO) for a joint assessment of importance and satisfaction to identify four key façade design elements that influence tourist travel satisfaction, namely Balcony, Façade Decoration, Night Light, and Façade Integrated Photovoltaic. Notably, Façade Decoration and Façade Integrated Photovoltaic demonstrate a positive correlation with overall tourist satisfaction. Furthermore, this study offers evidence-based recommendations for urban policymakers and architects, along with theoretical insights into enhancing urban tourism satisfaction.
