Abstract:A mesoscale convective system (MCS) which happened around Shandong Province in the middle spring 2003 induced heavy rainfall. In the unstable large scale atmosphere, trigger conditions determine when and where the convections come into being. However, these conditions lie in boundary level above ground with small scales, and the general surface and rawinsonde data can not reveal them. A method of numerical simulation and sensitivity simulation together with objective analysis are conducted, and its trigger mechanism can be diagnosed. The results of diagnosis indicate that two developments of MCS bring up this heavy rain. The first can be called a typical Huabei MCS, whose initial convections are arisen by terrain forced climb; the second initial convections are arisen by boundary convergence lines in the afternoon, meantime the lower level cold air from Huabei Plain also contributes to their formation. So the maximum convective available potential energy (MCAPE) is able to give right information on where the initial convections will occur.

Abstract:Successful numerical simulation output from WRFV2.2 combined with NCEP reanalysis data,observed precipitation data from automatic stations and Doppler radar reflectivity are used to analyze the heavy rainfall caused by typhoon Haitang in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.The results show that the heavy rainfall is from the spiral clouds band close to the north of the typhoon center,and caused directly by the strong mesoscale convergence belt in the boundary layer.The rain belt develops and moves northward corresponding to the convergence belt.Three typhoon currents from different directions converge and ascend near the boundary of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces,transporting moisture and energy for the strengthening and maintenance of heavy rainfall.The confluence of these currents mainly happens in the boundary layer,which is the reason why the mesoscale convergence belt is confined in the boundary layer.The complicated mesoscale orography in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces plays an important role in the storm.The three different currents lift upward along the mountains ranging from north to south and trigger precipitation,which contributes to the heavy rainfall.However,the terrain plays no effect on the mesoscale convergence belt but prevents the precipitation from extending westward.
Hailstorm Formation Enhanced by Meso- Γ Vortices along a Low-Level Convergence Line

Abstract:During a hailstorm event, near-surface meso- γ vortices along a convergence line interact with hail cells. Herein we investigate this interaction by using observational data and a high-resolution simulation of a hailstorm that occurred over Taizhou (Zhejiang, China) on 19 March 2014. The 10-m surface wind data from automatic weather stations show that several meso- γ vortices or vortex-like disturbances existed over the convergence zone and played a vital role in the evolution of the hailstorm and the location of the hail. The model results agree with the observations and present a closer correlation between the hail and the low-level meso- γ vortices than those observed. The model simulation indicates that such low-level meso- γ vortices can be used to predict the next 10-min hail fallout zone. The low-level meso- γ vortices originated over the convergence zone and then fed back into the convergence field and provoked a stronger updraft. Vorticity was initiated primarily by stretching and was extended by tilting. A three-dimensional (3-D) flow analysis shows that the existence of low-level meso- γ vortices could help enhance a local updraft. Furthermore, the simulation reveals that the low-level meso- γ vortices formed in the bounded weak echo region (WER) at the front of the hail cell, enhancing convergence and strengthening updrafts. Graupel was broadly located between the 0°C isothermal line and the top of the clouds, roughly between the 0 and −20°C isothermal lines. Accordingly, the hailstones grew rapidly. The suitable environment and the positive effect of the meso- γ vortices on the updrafts enabled hailstorm formation.
Numerical Study of the Role of Microphysical Latent Heating and Surface Heat Fluxes in a Severe Precipitation Event in the Warm Sector over Southern China

Abstract:Simulations of the severe precipitation event that occurred in the warm sector over southern China on 08 May 2014 are conducted using the Advanced Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF-ARWv3.5.1) model to investigate the roles of microphysical latent heating and surface heat fluxes during the severe precipitation processes. At first, observations from surface rain gauges and ground-based weather radars are used to evaluate the model outputs. Results show that the spatial distribution of 24-h accumulated precipitation is well reproduced, and the temporal and spatial distributions of the simulated radar reflectivity agree well with the observations. Then, several sensitive simulations are performed with the identical model configurations, except for different options in microphysical latent heating and surface heat fluxes. From the results, one of the significant findings is that the latent heating from warm rain microphysical processes heats the atmosphere in the initial phase of the precipitation and thus convective systems start by self-triggering and self-organizing, despite the fact that the environmental conditions are not favorable to the occurrence of precipitation event at the initial phase. In the case of the severe precipitation event over the warm sector, both warm and ice microphysical processes are active with the ice microphysics processes activated almost two hours later. According to the sensitive results, there is a very weak precipitation without heavy rainfall belt when microphysical latent heating is turned off. In terms of this precipitation event, the warm microphysics processes play significant roles on precipitation intensity, while the ice microphysics processes have effects on the spatial distribution of precipitation. Both surface sensible and latent heating have effects on the precipitation intensity and spatial distribution. By comparison, the surface sensible heating has a strong influence on the spatial distribution of precipitation, and the surface latent heating has only a slight impact on the precipitation intensity. The results indicate that microphysical latent heating might be an important factor for severe precipitation forecast in the warm sector over southern China. Surface sensible heating can have considerable influence on the precipitation spatial distribution and should not be neglected in the case of weak large-scale conditions with abundant water vapor in the warm sector.

Abstract:In this study, the three (Hsie, Krueger and Zeng) schemes that parameterize depositional growth of ice crystal are tested using Koenig and Takahashi parameters in modeling China pre-summer torrential rainfall event. The Krueger scheme with the Takahashi parameter produces the closest simulations to the observations because it increases cloud ice and snow in the upper troposphere. The increased ice hydrometeor enhances and suppresses infrared radiative cooling above and below 12 km, respectively. The suppressed infrared cooling reduces net condensation while the enhanced infrared cooling suppresses hydrometeor loss through the reduction in melting of ice hydrometeor.
Numerical Simulation and the Underlying Mechanism of a Severe Hail‐Producing Convective System in East China

Abstract:A severe convective system that produced egg‐sized hail in Jiangsu province in eastern China on April 28, 2015 was simulated using a cloud‐resolving Weather Research and Forecasting model with the spectral bin microphysics scheme. The simulation reproduced the two stages of the convective system: the linear convective system (LCS) and the bow echo system (BES) stages. During the LCS stage, the intensity of updrafts was slightly stronger than that in the BES stage, with abundant supercooled water above the −20°C layer, and graupel and hail mainly generated in this period. The microphysical budget analyses and size distribution characteristics of hail were studied within one cell that produced hail during the LCS. It was suggested that hail mainly formed through water‐graupel collision and increased in size by collecting liquid water. Hail particles with smaller diameter were located around the perimeter of the main updrafts, while larger ones were distributed at the left edge of the updrafts. Trajectories and size growth processes of hailstones within the chosen cell were calculated by a three‐dimensional hail growth model, and it was found that hail originated from the middle levels on the east side of the updrafts, and were transformed westward and downward to the lower levels. They continued to ascend along the left edge of the updrafts and experienced one or more up‐down recycles and fell down to the ground on the west side of the updrafts.
Explicit prediction of hail using multimoment microphysics schemes for a hailstorm of 19 March 2014 in eastern China

Abstract:In the late afternoon of 19 March 2014, a severe hailstorm swept through eastern central Zhejiang province, China. The storm produced golf ball-sized hail, strong winds, and lighting, lasting approximately 1 h over the coastal city of Taizhou. The Advanced Regional Prediction System is used to simulate the hailstorm using different configurations of the Milbrandt-Yau microphysics scheme that predict one, two, or three moments of the hydrometeor particle size distribution. Simulated fields, including accumulated precipitation and maximum estimated hail size (MESH), are verified against rain gauge observations and radar-derived MESH, respectively. For the case of the 19 March 2014 storms, the general evolution is better predicted with multimoment microphysics schemes than with the one-moment scheme; the three-moment scheme produces the best forecast. Predictions from the three-moment scheme qualitatively agree with observations in terms of size and amount of hail reaching the surface. The life cycle of the hailstorm is analyzed, using the most skillful, three-moment forecast. Based upon the tendency of surface hail mass flux, the hailstorm life cycle can be divided into three stages: developing, mature, and dissipating. Microphysical budget analyses are used to examine microphysical processes and characteristics during these three stages. The vertical structures within the storm and their link to environmental shear conditions are discussed; together with the rapid fall of hailstones, these structures and conditions appear to dictate this pulse storm's short life span. Finally, a conceptual model for the life cycle of pulse hailstorms is proposed.
A Statistical Analysis of Hail Events and Their Environmental Conditions in China During 2008–15

Abstract:An 8-yr (i.e., 2008–15) climatology of the spatiotemporal characteristics of hail events in China and their associated environmental conditions are examined using hail observations, L-band rawinsondes, and global reanalysis data. A total of 1003 hail events with maximum hail diameter (MHD) of greater than 5 mm are selected and then sorted into three hail-size bins. Hail events with the largest MHD bin correspond to the median vertical wind shear in the lowest 6-km layer (SHR6) of 21.6 m s−1, precipitable water (PW) of 34.8 mm, and convective available potential energy (CAPE) of 2192 J kg−1. Hail with different MHD bins share similar freezing-level heights (FLHs) of about 4000 m. The thickness of the hail growth zone is thinner for hail events with the largest MHD bin. Hail events with different MHD bins display seasonal variations associated with the summer monsoon; that is, the hail season starts in South China in spring and then shifts to North China in summer. Larger hail is mainly observed during the spring in South China before monsoon onset in the presence of an upper-level jet and a low-level southwesterly flow accounting for large SHR6 and PW. In contrast, smaller-MHD hailstorms occur mainly during the summer in North China when surface heating is high and the low-level southerly flow shifts northward with pronounced baroclinicity providing large CAPE and PW, moderate SHR6, and low FLH. Environmental CAPE and SHR6 for large hailstones in China are comparable in magnitude to those in the United States but larger than those in some European countries.
Classification of Hailstone Trajectories in a Hail Cloud over a Semi-Arid Region in China

Abstract:The growth trajectory of hailstones in clouds determines the ground intensity and spatial distribution of hailfall. A systematic study of hail trajectories can help improve the current scientific understanding of the mechanisms by which hail forms in semi-arid regions of China and, in doing so, improve the quality of hail forecasts and warnings and help to prevent and mitigate disasters. In this study, the WRFv3.7.1 model was employed to provide the background field to drive the hailstone trajectory model. Cluster analysis was then used to classify hail trajectories to investigate the characteristics of different types of hail trajectories and the microphysical characteristics of hail formation. The differences in hail trajectories might be mainly due to differences in the background flow fields and microphysical fields of hail clouds in different regions. Comparative analysis revealed that as the maximum particle size of ground hailfall increased, the maximum supercooled cloud water content and the maximum updraft velocity for the formation and growth of hailstone increased. The larger the size when the hailstone reaches its maximum height, the larger the ground hailstone formed. Overall, the formation and growth of hailstone are caused by the joint action of the dynamical flow field and cloud microphysical processes. The physical processes of hailstone growth and main growth regions differ for different types of hail trajectories. Therefore, different catalytic schemes should be adopted in artificial hail prevention operations for different hail clouds and trajectories due to differences in hail formation processes and ground hailfall characteristics.

Climatology of Hail Frequency and Size in China, 1980–2015

Abstract:The hail day climatology from 1961 to 2005 was previously studied based on hundreds of surface stations in China. Recently, both hail occurrence and maximum hail diameter (MHD) data from more than 2000 surface stations were released by the National Meteorological Information Center of China. These data enable hail climatology to be explored using both hail frequency (HF), which is defined as annual mean hail occurrence, and MHD records from more stations over the entire country. Following quality control, hail data from 2254 stations were selected for the period of 1980-2015. In general, HF increased with station topography height, with a maximum of more than 30 events per year in the Tibetan Plateau and a minimum of less than 1 event per year in southern China, whereas the station mean MHD decreased with topography height. The highest peak of the 80th-percentile cumulative distribution function of the annual MHD cycle in southern China occurred in May but was delayed to July in the north. Severe hail (MHD 20 mm; 5.32% of all cases) mainly occurred along the edge of the plain, near the mountainsides, and was most likely to develop in the afternoon.
Numerical Simulations of the Physical Process for Hailstone Growth

Abstract:Theoretical and experimental studies show that during hail growth the heat and mass transfers play a determinant role in growth rates and different structures. However, many numerical model researchers made extrapolation of the key heat transfer coefficient of the thermal balance expression from measurements of evaporating water droplets obtained under small Renolds numbers (Re ≤ 200) introduced by Ranz and Marshall, leading to great difference from reality. This paper is devoted to the parameterization of measured heat transfer coefficients under Renolds numbers related to actual hail scales proposed by Zheng, which are then applied, to Hu-He 1D and 3D models for hail growth respectively, indicating that the melting rate of a hailstone is 12%-50% bigger, the evaporation rate is 10%-200% higher and the dry-wet growth rate is 10%-40% larger from the present simulations than from the prototype models.
Explicit Prediction of Hail in a Long-Lasting Multicellular Convective System in Eastern China Using Multimoment Microphysics Schemes

Abstract:During the afternoon of 28 April 2015, a multicellular convective system swept southward through much of Jiangsu Province, China, over about 7 h, producing egg-sized hailstones on the ground. The hailstorm event is simulated using the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS) at 1-km grid spacing. Different configurations of the Milbrandt-Yau microphysics scheme are used, predicting one, two, and three moments of the hydrometeor particle size distributions (PSDs). Simulated reflectivity and maximum estimated size of hail (MESH) derived from the simulations are verified against reflectivity observed by operational S-band Doppler radars and radar-derived MESH, respectively. Comparisons suggest that the general evolution of the hailstorm is better predicted by the three-moment scheme, and neighborhood-based MESH evaluation further confirms the advantage of the three-moment scheme in hail size prediction. Surface accumulated hail mass, number, and hail distribution characteristics within simulated storms are examined across sensitivity experiments. Results suggest that multimoment schemes produce more realistic hail distribution characteristics, with the three-moment scheme performing the best. Size sorting is found to play a significant role in determining hail distribution within the storms. Detailed microphysical budget analyses are conducted for each experiment, and results indicate that the differences in hail growth processes among the experiments can be mainly ascribed to the different treatments of the shape parameter within different microphysics schemes. Both the differences in size sorting and hail growth processes contribute to the simulated hail distribution differences within storms and at the surface.
Observational Analysis on the 3-Dimensional Structure of a Hailstorm in the Eastern Part of Maowusu Desert

Abstract:A hail storm weather event occurred in northwestern Yulin on July 27,2006,was continuously monitored and analyzed by using real time data provided by the new generation weather radar and MICAPS observed data including other physical quantity calculated upon them.The diagnostic analysis shows that the atmospheric stratification was stable at 08:00 that day,but a narrow strong convectively-instable tongue generated in the moist barotropic field at 925 hPa level extending from southeast to hail zone.In 2 hours before the hail storm near the up neighbor of the hail zone,there emerged a β mesoscale high energy ratio center and a β meso-scale low energy ratio tongue reflecting the weak cold air movement.The hailstorm also developed with the strengthening of moist atmospheric baroclinicity in lower troposphere and temperature leap in boundary layer.Dynamic situation for generating and maintaining hail storm derived from formation of the mesoscale secondary circulation along latitude.Radar reflectivity analysis indicates that strong hail and high wind were induced by the super cell storm which was a combination of the β mesoscale hook echo and a new γ mesoscale evere convective cell generated in the hook area by dry invasion.The super cell storm has unique dynamical features,except which accompanied by a long-lasting deep mesoscale vortex,in lower troposphere,the inflowing jet stream maintained full 50 minutes,the rare β mesoscale ring divergence emerged in hook area near surface level and represented features of outward expansion.In 0.5°velocity field,stream in hailstorm zone experienced a evolution of longitudinal convergence,cyclonical convergence,cyclonical twist and longitudinal convergence till the end.

Abstract:A previous hail climatology of China was based upon observations during 1951–60. An effort has been made in this study to update this hail climatology in China with the use of a much longer record of observations from 1961 to 2005. This is made possible with the release of a new, comprehensive collection of hail observational data in May 2006 by the National Meteorological Information Center of China. The focus herein is to document the mean annual geographical distribution of hail frequency and seasonal and diurnal variations of hail occurrence. The results show that hail occurs most frequently in the high mountainous areas and northern plains. As a result, hail frequency is generally higher in northern China than in southern China. The hail frequency is highest over the central Tibetan Plateau. Hail seasons start in late spring and end in early autumn in northern and western China; they start mainly in spring in southern and southwestern China. On the diurnal time scale, hail events occur mainly between 1500 and 2000 local time in most of China except in Guizhou and Hubei Provinces (central western China), where hail events often occur during nighttime.
Effects of cloud microphysical process on precipitations and hails of simulated storms

Abstract:In this study,an intense thunderstorm case,observed in South Park Area Cumulus Experiment(SPACE) of the United States on 19 July 1977,is numerically simulated by using three dimensional cloud model.The purpose of work is to verify the effects of cloud microphysical processes on the simulated storm.By comparing the three different experiments designed with the control simulation experiment,we can understand the microphysics processes of intense thunderstorms well.In the first experiment,the prognostic equations of cloud ice,snow,graupel and hail are excluded from the control simulation,only the warm-rain physics is allowed.The simulation results are weakest in three experiments.The second experiment only considers the latent heat of fusion for phase changes occurring below the temperature of 0 ℃,and results are weaker in the latter period than the control simulation.In the third experiment,graupel and hail phases are removed from the control simulation.Exclusion of graupel and hail implies the neglect of phase changes,latent heats,and fallout,thus modifying the dynamics and precipitation fields.
A Climatology and Extreme Value Analysis of Large Hail in China

Abstract:Hail size records are analyzed at 2254 stations in China and a hail size climatology is developed based on gridded hail observations for the period 1960-2015. It is found that the annual percentiles of hail size records changed sharply and national-wide after 1980, therefore two periods, 1960-79 and 1980-2015, are studied. There are some similarities between the two periods in terms of the characteristics of hail size such as the spatial distribution patterns of mean annual maximum hail size and occurrence week of annual maximum hail size. The 1980-2015 period had higher observation density than the 1960-79 period, but showed smaller mean annual maximum hail size, especially in northern China. In the majority of grid boxes, the annual maximum hail size experienced a decreasing trend during the 1980-2015 period. A Gumbel extreme value model is fitted to each grid box to estimate the return periods of maximum hail size. The scale and location parameter of the fitted Gumbel distributions are higher in eastern China than in western China, thereby reflecting a greater likelihood of large hail in eastern China. In southern China, the maximum hail size exceeds 127 mm for a 10-yr return period, whereas in northern China maximum hail size exceeds this threshold for a 50-yr return period. The Gumbel model is found to potentially underestimate the maximum hail size for certain return periods, but provides a more informed picture of the spatial distribution of extreme hail size and the regional differences.

Abstract:Based on the NCEP grid data,a hail weather process on August 21,2011 in Shenyang region was simu-lated and its formation mechanism was analyzed using the automatic observation data collected at the airport, Doppler radar data and satellite image.The results show that the hail weather is caused by mesoscale vortex of cold vortex over northeastern China,so is mesoscale cloud cluster on the satellite cloud images.The 0 ℃and -20 ℃i-sothermal lines are located in 600 hPa and near 450 hPa,respectively,and the thickness between them is about 2 km.Before the hail occurs,the maximum ascending speed of obliquely ascending airflow is more than 20 m·s-1 and water vapor accumulation region is located in the layer above 0 ℃,which ensures that the water accumulated area consists of super cooled water droplet.The upper dry cold air invades into the warm-wet air of middle-low level,which is important to convective occurrence and development.The MPV1 in the low level provides the con-vective instability mechanism for strong convection;the MPV2 in the middle level is for symmetric instability mechanism;two unstable mechanisms coexist in the high level and both contribute to the development of convec-tion.The evolution of convective available potential energy accumulation and release with the time is indicative to hail.At 10:30,the echo intensity increases with the height on Doppler radar map.There is southwest low level jet on the velocity map.Both are favorable to the development of convective.

Abstract:A number of simulation activities are conducted through utilizing a 3-D and 2-parameter convective cloud model,which includes very detailed microphysical processes,in order to analyze characteristics in details of precipitation processes in convective cloud,of which the events often occur during summer in mountainous area of west-northern Hubei Province.This study is expected to enhance understanding of local convection precipitation forecast and rainfall augmentation.Based on the results of simulation,which are comparable to real amount of rainfall and features of radar echoes,warm and cold cloud microphysical characteristics are analyzed and discussed such as vertical distribution natures of ice phase particles and super cool water,accretion mechanisms of graupel,ice crystal and etc.Finally,the main precipitation microphysical mechanism of cold convective cloud is concluded.
Hail Day Frequency Trends and Associated Atmospheric Circulation Patterns over China During 1960-2012

Abstract:Based on a comprehensive collection of hail observations and the NCEP-NCAR reanalyses from 1960 to 2012, the long-term trends of hail day frequency in mainland China and the associated changes in atmospheric circulation patterns were analyzed. There was no detectable trend in hail frequency from 1960 to the early 1980s, but a significant decreasing trend was apparent in later periods throughout most of China and in particular over the Tibetan Plateau from the early 1980s and over northern and northwestern China from the early 1990s. Hail frequency in southern China did not decrease as significantly as in other regions over the last couple of decades. An objective classification method, the obliquely rotated T-mode principal component technique, was used to investigate atmospheric circulation patterns. It was found that 51.85% of the hail days occurred during two major circulation types, both of which were associated with cold frontal systems in northern China. More specifically, the synoptic trough in East Asia, signified by the meridional circulation at 850 hPa, became considerably weaker after 1990. This change in the synoptic pattern is consistent with a weakening trend in the East Asian summer monsoon, the primary dynamic forcing of moisture transport that contributes to the generation of severe convection in northern China. The long-term variability of hail day frequency over the Tibetan Plateau was more strongly correlated with the change in mean freezing-level height (FLH) than the strength of the East Asian monsoon.

Abstract:A 16year record of hail reports over the south U.S. and from weather stations in China are collocated with precipitation features (PFs) derived from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) radar and passive microwave observations. Differences in the way hail is reported in the two nations make it difficult to draw meaningful conclusions about storm frequency. But taking the two together yields a wide spectrum of hail sizes, suitable for comparing with remote sensing measurements. While U.S. hail reports are dominated by cases with hail size greater than 19mm, hail reports in China mostly include diameters of 1-10mm and mostly occur over the Tibetan Plateau. The fraction of PFs collocated with hail reports (hail PFs) reaches 3% in the plains of the U.S. In China, the fraction is higher in high elevation regions than low elevation regions. Hail PFs (as reported in the U.S.) show lower brightness temperatures, higher lightning flash rates, stronger maximum reflectivity, and higher echo tops than those with smaller hail, as reported in China. The average near surface maximum reflectivity of hail PFs at high elevations (2000m) in China is about 5dB smaller than those at low elevations. Larger hail is reported with PFs having stronger maximum reflectivity above 6km, though the median of maximum reflectivity values at levels below 5km is similar among the storms with large and small hail sizes.
