Abstract:Chirality is well known as a ubiquitous feature for the sustainability of life in nature. For instance, chiral substances with pure enantiomeric forms are essential for the generation and evolution of life. Therefore, the chiral separation of enantiomers is of great significance in both life science and pharmaceutical industry. The two most widely adopted chiral separation strategies are chromatographic separation and membrane-assisted separation, the latter one of which is promising for large-scale production due to its potential advantages. In this review, we summarized the innovative materials with intrinsic micropores developed in recent years and their application for chiral resolution either as stationary phases in chromatography or as separation membranes, including metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), modified graphene or graphene-oxides (GO), porous organic cages (POCs) and others.

Abstract:Chirality is an important, universal phenomenon in nature. For the in-depth study of pharmacology and biology, efficient enantioselective technologies are indispensable. Nanomaterials with large surface-to-volume ratio and specific physical and chemical properties have demonstrated great potential in chiral discrimination. Many publications show that utilization of nanomaterials could improve the selectivity, the stability and the efficiency of enantioseparation. This review summarizes the applications of various enantioselective nanomaterials, including mesoporous silica, organic polymers, metal-organic frameworks, metal nanomaterials, magnetic nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes and well-oriented chiral nanolayers. After proper preparation and modification, these functionalized nanomaterials are effective for chiral separation through their specific enantioselective adsorption, especially when they are used as stationary or pseudo-stationary phases in chiral chromatographic separation, such as thin-layer chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. Preparation of Vortex Porous Graphene Chiral Membrane for Enantioselective Separation

Abstract:Chiral materials are usually the key to the separation of chiral membranes. In this work, we propose a new strategy that chiral porous graphene membrane can be fabricated from nonchiral porous graphene by mechanical stirring to induce vortex structure. Porous graphene with controlled, nanosized pores was synthesized by a newly designed, one-pot process directly from graphite as opposed to graphene oxide. Then porous graphene was immobilized on ultrafiltration membrane through filtering while stirring to form porous graphene membrane, which was applied for enantioselective separation toward DL-amino acids: for example, the separation factor of l-/d-phenylalanine reached 4.76. Interestingly, we first observed that the front and back sides of the porous graphene membrane exhibited opposite optical activities.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Chiral nanoenzymes are a new type of material that possesses both chiral nanostructures and enzymatic catalytic activity. These materials exhibit selectivity in their catalytic activity towards organisms due to the introduction of chiral features in nanomaterials and have inherent chiral discrimination in organisms. As synthetic enzymes, chiral nanoenzymes offer significant advantages over natural enzymes. Due to their unique chiral structure and distinctive physicochemical properties, chiral nanoenzymes play an important role in various fields, including biology, medicine, and environmental protection. Their strong stereospecificity and biocompatibility make them useful in disease therapy, biosensing, and chiral catalysis, setting them apart from conventional and natural enzymes. In recent years, the design of synthetic methods and biological applications of chiral nanoenzymes has received significant attention and extensive research among scientists. This paper provides a systematic review of the research progress in the discovery, development, and application of chiral nanoenzymes in the last decade. Additionally, it presents various applications of chiral nanoenzymes, such as disease therapy, biosensing, and chiral catalysis. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of chiral nanoenzymes are discussed.

Abstract:Chirality, the property that an object cannot coincide with its mirror image arising from lack of mirror symmetry, is ubiquitous in nature at various length scales. The physical and chemical properties are strongly related to the nature of chiral complexes, playing a significant role in various fields such as photonics, biochemistry, medicine and catalysis. In particular, the recent flexible design of chiral metal nanostructures offers one platform for deeply understanding the origin of chirality and one roadmap for the precise construction of chiral nanomaterials directed by the applications. Herein, we summarize the different geometries and classical synthetic approaches to chiral noble metal nanomaterials. Moreover, chiroptical properties and potential applications of chiral metal nanostructures are discussed as well. Finally, the opportunities and challenges toward the synthesis and application of chiral metal nanostructures are proposed.Graphical abstract

Abstract:In the context of sustainable development, chirality, especially chiral drugs, has attracted great interest in the pharmaceutical industry, yet the smart and sensitive separation of enantiomers still presents a major scientific challenge. Herein, inspired by supramolecular templating via chiral transcription nanoparticles, an artificial chiral nanochannel membrane with asymmetric structure, porosity, and abundant chiral surface is fabricated for smart and sensitive enantiomer recognition and separation. Constructed from chiral transcript mesoporous silica (CMS) super-assembled on a porous anode alumina oxide (AAO) support, the obtained heterostructured chiral membrane (CMS/AAO) exhibits enhanced enantioseparation (approximately 170% compared to the supramolecular-templated nanoparticles) among a series of amino acids with various isoelectric points (PIs). Especially for amino acids with a PI greater than 7, the couple-accelerated enantioseparation (CAE) can be achieved for the first time. Further analysis using an osmotic energy conversion test and simulations based on the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations confirm that the heterostructure and charge polarity are the key to achieve chiral amino acids and ion separation. We expect this work will inspire the development of multifunctional membrane systems for more sustainable and energy-efficient enantioseparation.

Abstract:Protein pores are highly specific in binding to chiral substrates and in catalysing stereospecific reactions, because their active pockets are asymmetric and stereoselective 1 , 2 . Chiral binding materials from molecular-level pores with high specificity have not been achieved because of problems with pore deformation and blocking 3 . A promising solution is the self-assembly of single sheets where all pores are exposed to the environment, for example as metal–organic frameworks 4 , polymers 5 , 6 or non-covalent aromatic networks 7 – 10 , but, typically, the pores are distant from the internal cavities with chirality. Here, we report the synthesis of homochiral porous nanosheets achieved by the 2D self-assembly of non-chiral macrocycles, with open/closed pore switching. Pore chirality is spontaneously induced by a twisted stack of dimeric macrocycles. The porous 2D structures can serve as enantiomer sieving membranes that exclusively capture a single enantiomer in a racemic mixture solution, with uptake capacity greater than 96%. Moreover, the entrapped guests inside the pores can be pumped out by pore closing triggered by external stimuli. This strategy could provide new opportunities for controlled molecule release, as well as for artificial cells.

Abstract:Focusing on chiral inorganic nanomaterials (CINMs), this review elucidates how advanced TEM techniques facilitate precise qualitative analysis of CINMs, including chiral atomic‐level features, 0D, 1D, and 2D nanocrystals, and assemblies. It also highlights quantitative methods for determining chirality, such as 3D electron tomography, and discusses the evolution of chiral structures as monitored by the ex situ and in situ TEM technologies. Chiral inorganic nanomaterials (CINMs) have garnered significant interest due to their exceptional optical, electronic, and catalytic properties, offering promising advancements in energy conversion, data storage, catalysis, and biomedicine. While traditional optical spectrophotometers reveal the chiroptical performance of CINMs on an ensemble level, the direct structural visualization for the qualitative and quantitative discernment of their chiral features has become increasingly distinct with the advancements of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The need for reasonable and high‐standard discrimination requirements of CINMs has driven the progress of chirality‐based TEM technologies. Therefore, this review in the good season takes the initiative to summarize the current advancements in TEM technologies for CINMs characterization, emphasizing a qualitative analysis of chiral atomic‐level features, 0D, 1D, and 2D nanocrystals, and assembled nanomaterials. Then, the quantitative methods for determining chirality is also highlighted, such as 3D electron tomography, and further address the evolution of chiral structures monitored by the Ex‐situ and In‐situ TEM technologies. By providing a roadmap for the current challenges and proposing future advancements in TEM technologies for the qualitative, quantitative, and real‐time analysis of CINMs, it can drive innovations in the field of chiral nanomaterials as well as the development of TEM technologies.

Abstract:Chiral separation has already become a crucial topic for effectively utilizing superfluous racemates synthesized by chemical means and satisfying the growing requirements for producing enantiopure chiral compounds. However, the remarkably close physical and chemical properties of enantiomers present significant obstacles to this goal, rendering it an urgent need to develop novel enantioseparation methods. This review comprehensively summaries the latest developments of dominant enantioseparation methods including preparative-scale chromatography, enantioselective liquid-liquid extraction, crystallization-based methods for chiral separation, deracemization process coupling racemization and crystallization, porous materials method and membrane resolution method, and special attention is given to significant cases concerning crystallization, deracemization and membrane. Notably, potential trends and future directions are suggested based on the state-of-art of "coupling" strategy, which may greatly reinvigorate the existing individual methods and facilitate the emergence of cross-cutting ideas among researchers from different enantioseparation domains.

Abstract:Selective crystallization represents one of the most economical and convenient methods to provide large-scale optically pure chiral compounds. Although significant development has been achieved since Pasteur’s separation of sodium ammonium tartrate in 1848, this method is still fundamentally low efficient (low transformation ratio or high labor). Herein, we describe an enantiomer-selective-magnetization strategy for quantitatively separating the crystals of conglomerates by using a kind of magnetic nano-splitters. These nano-splitters would be selectively wrapped into the S-crystals, leading to the formation of the crystals with different physical properties from that of R-crystals. As a result of efficient separation under magnetic field, high purity chiral compounds (99.2 ee% for R-crystals, 95.0 ee% for S-crystals) can be obtained in a simple one-step crystallization process with a high separation yield (95.1%). Moreover, the nano-splitters show expandability and excellent recyclability. We foresee their great potential in developing chiral separation methods used on different scales.

Abstract:Chiral separation has attracted much attention for basic research and industrial applications in analytical chemistry. Generally, chiral separations use natural or artificial chiral-based materials as adsorbents. To improve the precision and efficiency of chiral separation, focus has shifted from natural and synthetic adsorbents to binary combinations of materials. This review specifically summarizes the significant advancements made in natural and artificial chiral adsorbents as promising candidates for diverse drug and biomolecule separation applications as well as the remaining drawbacks and challenges for research on chiral separations. The mechanisms of chiral-based recognition and separation and history and development of natural and artificial chiral-based systems are the focus of this review. Future directions in natural and artificial chiral-based systems for practical separations and other applications are also presented.

Abstract:Although considerable effort in recent years has been devoted to the development of two-dimensional nanostructures, single-layered chiral sheet structures with a lateral assembly of discrete clusters remain elusive. Here, we report single-layered chiral 2D sheet structures with dual chiral void spaces in which discrete clusters of planar aromatic segments are arranged with in-plane AB order in aqueous methanol solution. The chirality of the sheet is induced by the slipped-cofacial stacks of rectangular plate-like aromatic segments in the discrete clusters which are arranged laterally with up and down packing, resulting in dual chiral void spaces. The chiral nanosheets function as superfast enantiomer separation nanomaterials, which rapidly absorb a single enantiomer from a racemic mixture with greater than 99 % ee.

Cyclodextrins, owing to its unique cyclic structure and host-guest interactions, have emerged as a significant chiral selector for enantioseparation. This review highlights the most recent developments in synthesis and applications of cyclodextrin-based chiral materials, with focusing on their applications as chiral chromatographic stationary phases, chiral membrane materials, and enantioselective adsorption agents. Chiral aggregates of rod-coil molecules inside nanopores as efficient nanoreactors for asymmetric synthesis

Abstract:An important subject of porous organic materials is their capacity to access enantioselectivity due to their high surface area, controllable pore size, and ease of functionalization. However, recyclability of enantio-separation is a challenge, mainly due to the complex procedures of recovery and refreshing from enantiomers. For the first time, we combined nanochannel technology and supramolecular chiral assembly to achieve efficient enantioselectivity. Fine-designed amphiphilic chiral rod-coil molecules 1-3 were immobilized to SBA-15 pore walls to form SA-M1-3 (abbreviation for amino-functionalized SBA-15 connected to molecules 1-3), which commenced chiral aggregation inside the channels. The experimental results indicated that the strong π-π stacking interaction between the rigid terphenyl groups, as well as hydrophilic-hydrophobic interaction of the amphiphiles, assisted in chiral arrangement in aqueous solution, and was accompanied by amplification of chirality. As a result, porous chiral channels exhibiting enhanced efficiency in asymmetric synthesis were manufactured, where enantioselectivity can be controlled by the initial structural design of amphiphiles that induce chiral aggregation behaviors. The chiral centers of SA-M1 and SA-M2 are located on hydrophobic and hydrophilic coils, respectively, while SA-M3 possesses both chiral coils. The SA-M materials proceeded with chiral aggregation and behaved efficiently for enantioselectivity. SA-M3, which contained the most chiral centers, showed the most optimal enantioselectivity with an enantiomeric excess (ee) value up to 71.75%, which occurred because of the strongly driven chiral aggregation of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic chiral coils. The covalent hybrid structures of the SA-M materials can be easily refreshed simply through washing, and exhibited excellent recyclability with negligible loss of efficiency. Therefore, the SA-M materials have the ability to provide sustainable and reliable application value for enantiomer separation.

The basic structure of all organisms is composed of chiral molecules, and biological systems have high selectivity to chiral biomolecules. Moreover, with an in-depth understanding of the origin of chiral nanomaterials, the potential applications of chiral nanomaterials in the fields of biotherapy, catalysis, and medicine have become a hot topic of research. This review discusses the different types of chiral nanomaterials and analyzes the chiral mechanism. Abstract:Supramolecular chirality arising from periodic asymmetrical packings of building units plays a significant role in development of smart chiral materials, but the thorough mechanism of chirality control on self-assembly has seldom been understood. Here, three isomeric amphiphiles p/m/o-Py-BL (para/meta/ortho-pyridine-appended betulin) were synthesized from a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid. The presence or absence of supramolecular chirality of assembled p/m/o-Py-BL was regulated by isomeric effects, determined by conformation and strength of intramolecular H-bonds. The helical topologic transformation and chiroptical activity transitions modulated by Ag+ were also reported, ascribed to the transformed conformation of building units, converting a network of chiral nanofibers into helical nanoribbons. In addition, the helical nanoribbons of p-Py-BL/Ag+ were capable of in situ synthesis of Ag nanoparticles with plasmonic chirality. These findings provided a blueprint for regulating supramolecular handedness by isomerism and metal ions, affording a deeper understanding on chiral self-assembly processes and facilitating the applications of triterpenoid-based assemblies in chiral nanomaterials.
