Abstract:The CH fragment from the 193 nm photodissociation of CHCl is observed in a molecular beam experiment. This fragment is formed in the higher-energy dissociation pathway, the lower pathway involving formation of CCl. Both the CHCl parent molecule and the CH fragment were detected by laser-induced fluorescence. The 193 nm CHCl absorption cross section was estimated from the reduction of the CHCl signal as a function of the photolysis laser fluence. The CH internal state distribution was derived from the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence spectra of the A-X Deltav=0 sequence. A modest degree of rotational excitation was found in the CH fragment; the most probable rotational level is N=1, but the distribution has a tail extending to N>25. Also observed is a slight preference for formation of Lambda-doublets of A(") symmetry, which appears to increase with increasing rotational angular momentum N. Vibrationally excited CH was observed, and the degree of vibrational excitation was found to be low. The energy available to the photofragments is predominantly released as translational excitation. The preferential formation of A(") Lambda-doublets suggests that dissociation occurs through a nonlinear excited state.

Abstract:The product branching ratio between different products in multichannel reactions is as important as the over-all rate of reaction, both in terms of practical applications (e.g. models of combustion or atmosphere chemistry) in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of such chemical reactions. A global ground state potential energy surface for the dissociation reaction of deuterated alkyl halide CD3CH2F was computed at the CCSD(T)/CBS//B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory for all species. The decomposition of CD3CH2F is controversial concerning C−F bond dissociation reaction and molecular (HF, DF, H2, D2, HD) elimination reaction. Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) calculations were applied to compute the rate constants for individual reaction steps and the relative product branching ratios for the dissociation products were calculated using the steady-state approach. At the different energies studied, the RRKM method predicts that the main channel for DF or HF elimination from 1,2-elimination of CD3CH2F is through a four-center transition state, whereas D2 or H2 elimination from 1,1-elimination of CD3CH2F occurs through a direct three-center elimination. At 266, 248, and 193 nm photodissociation, the main product CD2CH2+DF branching ratios are computed to be 96.57%, 91.47%, and 48.52%, respectively; however, at 157 nm photodissociation, the product branching ratio is computed to be 16.11%. Based on these transition state structures and energies, the following photodissociation mechanisms are suggested: at 266, 248, 193 nm, CD3CH2F→absorption of a photon→TS5→the formation of the major product CD2CH2+DF; at 157 nm, CD3CH2F→absorption of a photon→D/F interchange of TS1→CDH2CDF→H/F interchange of TS2→CHD2CHDF→the formation of the major product CHD2+CHDF.
Dissociative Photoionization Of Cf3cl Via The (Ce)-E-2 And (De)-E-2 States: Competition Of The C-F And C-Cl Bond Cleavages

Abstract:The dissociative photoionization of CF3Cl was investigated using threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence (TPEPICO) imaging in the energy range of 12.30-18.50 eV. The coincident time-of-flight mass spectra and three-dimensional time-sliced images of the CF2Cl+ fragment were recorded at a few specific photon energies. Two fragmentation pathways were observed that led to the breakage of the C-Cl and C-F bonds, while the branching ratio elicited an energy-dependent relationship. The CF3+ fragment was dominant in the dissociation of the (XE)-E-2, A(2)A and B(2)A states, while CF2Cl+ became the predominant fragment and its branching ratio remained constant in the energy range associated with the (CE)-E-2 and (DE)-E-2 states. Based on the inflection point in the energy-dependent curve of the fragment branching ratios, the adiabatic ionization energy (IEa) of (CE)-E-2 is suggested to be 15.46 eV. Although the excess energy increased considerably from (CE)-E-2 to (DE)-E-2, the kinetic energy release distributions (KERDs) of CF2Cl+ were similar. Moreover, the anisotropy parameters for the F-loss channel were positive and larger than those for the Cl-loss channel. The calculated F-loss potential energy curves of CF3Cl+ suggested that for the (CE)-E-2 and (DE)-E-2 states, the C-F bond rupture occurred via the internal conversion to the A(2)A state followed by the dissociation attributed to the crossing of the barrier along the C-F coordinate. Based on the experimental and theoretical conclusions, the internal conversion is the rate-determining step in the dissociative photoionization of CF3Cl via the (CE)-E-2 and (DE)-E-2 ionic states, irrespective of whether the C-F and C-Cl bonds rupture.

Abstract:Nonadiabatic transition between electronic states plays a critical role in the photodissociation of the CX3Y (X = H and F; Y = Cl, Br, and I) system, and the transition probability was considered to be closely related to the X-C-Y bending motion. Hereby the effect of F-C-Br bending vibration on the nonadiabatic transition dynamics is studied by time-sliced ion velocity imaging of Br(2P1/2,3/2) isotopomers produced from the photodissociation of title molecules at two source temperatures, 298 K and 473 K, respectively. At the photolysis wavelength 234 nm, the anisotropy parameter (β) of the Br(2P3/2) products decreases from 1.3 at 298 K to 0.9 at 473 K, while the β of Br(2P1/2) remains at almost 2 at two temperatures, indicating the significant effect of bending excitation on the ground channel. Two nonadiabatic dissociation pathways are suggested in the Br(2P3/2) channel. One of them is the parallel excitation from the ground state to the 3 Q 0 state in C3V symmetry, and then transition to the 1 Q 1 state via conical intersection, and the other is the perpendicular excitation to the 3A' state in Cs symmetry and then decomposition along this state in the presence of the avoided crossing between 3A' and 4A' states. Closely related to the F-C-Br bending vibration of CF3Br is the latter transition.

Abstract:The dissociative photoionization of CF3Cl was investigated in the photon energy range of 12.30-18.50 eV. The low-lying electronic states of CF3Cl+ cations were prepared by the method of threshold photoelectron-photoion coincidence (TPEPICO). The threshold photoelectron spectrum and the coincident time-of-flight mass spectra at the specific photon energies were recorded. Only a CF3+ fragment was observed at lower energy, while a CF2Cl+ fragment appeared for C2E and D2E states. As Cl-loss from the ground ionic state is statistical, the total kinetic energy release distribution (KERD) is represented as a Boltzmann profile, and a 0 K appearance energy of AP0 =12.79 ± 0.02 eV is derived from the statistical modelling of the breakdown diagram from 12.60 to 12.85 eV without taking into account the kinetic shift. For the A2A1 and B2A2 states of CF3Cl+ cations, the total KERDs are bimodal, where a parallel faster dissociation appears together with the statistical distribution. At higher energies like the C2E and D2E ionic states, a bimodal distribution similar to that of the A2A1 and B2A2 states is also observed for the KERD. With the aid of the calculated Cl-loss potential energy curves, the dissociative mechanisms of internal energy-selected CF3Cl+ cations are proposed.

Abstract:The state-resolved photodissociation dynamics of CH3Br+ cations are studied using a combination of slice imaging and velocity mapping. Parent ions are prepared by (2 + 1) two-photon resonant three-photon ionization of CH3Br through the 5s Rydberg state in the energy region 29 069.8-29 976.0 cm(-1). Analysis of the photoelectron spectra reveals that CH3Br + ions are produced in the spin-orbit ground electronic state with a wide distribution of vibrational excitation. The photodissociation of CH3Br+ produces CH3+(X) + Br(P-2(1/2))/ Br(P-2(3/2)) whose product state distribution shows substantial excitation in the umbrella mode of the CH3+ photofragment, especially when concurrently producing the Br(P-2(1/2)) channel. The shapes of the photofragment angular distributions clearly show the different dissociation mechanisms in the Br(P-2(1/2)) and Br(P-2(3/2)) channels. The dissociation dynamics of the 5s Rydberg state of CH3Br are also presented and analyzed.

Abstract:Dissociation of internal energy selected CF4(+) ions in an excitation energy range of 15.40-19.60 eV has been investigated using threshold photoelectron-photoion coincidence (TPEPICO) velocity imaging. Only CF3(+) fragment ions are observed in coincident mass spectra, indicating all the X(2)T1, A(2)T2, and B(2)E ionic states of CF4(+) are fully dissociative. Both kinetic energy released distribution (KERD) and angular distribution in dissociation of CF4(+) ions have been derived from three-dimensional TPEPICO time-sliced images. A parallel distribution of CF3(+) fragments along the polarization vector of photon is observed for dissociation of CF4(+) ions in all the low-lying electronic states. With the aid of F-loss potential energy curves, dissociation mechanisms of CF4(+) ions in these electronic states have been proposed. CF4(+) ions in both X(2)T1 and A(2)T2 states directly dissociate to CF3(+) and F fragments along the repulsive C-F coordinate, while a two-step dissociation mechanism is suggested for B(2)E state: CF4(+)(B(2)E) ion first converts to the lower A(2)T2 state via internal conversion, then dissociates to CF3(+) and F fragments along the steep A(2)T2 potential energy surface. In addition, an adiabatic appearance potential of AP0(CF3(+)∕CF4) has also been established to be 14.71 ± 0.02 eV, which is very consistent with the recent calculated values.

Abstract:Anionic fragments, F− and Cl− including two isotope species 35Cl− and 37Cl−, are observed in the photoexcitations of CFCl3. The ion-pair anion efficiency spectra of 35Cl− and 37Cl− are recorded in the photon energy range of 7.75–22.00 eV. The threshold of ion-pair dissociation CFCl3→CFCl2++Cl− is experimentally determined to be 7.94±0.04 eV. With the references of the high-resolution photoabsorption spectra reported in the literatures, we make tentative assignments of the electron valence-to-Rydberg transitions. Furthermore, the multibody ion-pair fragmentation processes to Cl− are discussed by comparison between the calculated thermochemical thresholds and the experimental efficiency spectrum.

Abstract:The increasing presence of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (CF3CH2F) in the atmosphere has prompted detailed studies into its complex photodissociation behavior. Experiments focusing on CF3CH2F irradiation have unveiled an array of ions, with the persistent observation of the rearrangement product CHF2+ not yet fully understood. In this work, we combine density functional theory, coupled-cluster calculations with a complete basis set formalism, and atom-centered density matrix propagation molecular dynamics to investigate the energetics and dynamics of different potential pathways leading to CHF2+. We found that the two-body dissociation pathway involving an HF rearrangement, which was previously considered complex for CHF2+ formation, is actually straightforward but not likely due to the facile loss of HF. In contrast, our calculations reveal that the H elimination pathway, once thought of as a potential route to CHF2+, is not only comparably disadvantageous from both thermodynamic and kinetic points of view but also does not align with experimental data, particularly the lack of a rebound peak at m/z 101–102. We establish that the formation of CHF2+ is predominantly via the HF elimination channel, a conclusion experimentally corroborated by studies involving the trifluoroethylene cation CF2CHF+, a key intermediate in this process.

Abstract:The Jahn-Teller (JT) effect, as a spontaneous symmetry-breaking mechanism arising from the coupling between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom, is a widespread phenomenon in molecular and condensed matter systems. Here, we investigate the influence of the JT effect on the photodissociation dynamics of CF3I molecules. Based on ab initio calculation, we obtain the three-dimensional potential energy surfaces for 3Q0+ and 1Q1 states and establish a diabatic Hamiltonian model to study the wavepacket dynamics in the CF3I photodissociation process. Using the wave function of the final state after dissociation, we calculate the rotational density matrix of the CF3 fragment and analyze its rotational excitation under the JT effect, as well as its partial coherence property and selection rules. Our work paves the way to the experimental observation and quantification of the JT effect in molecular dissociation dynamics beyond the classical ball-and-stick model.

Abstract:The fragmentation dynamics of 2,6- and 3,5-difluoroiodobenzene after iodine 4$d$ inner-shell photoionization with soft X-rays are studied using coincident electron and ion momentum imaging. By analyzing the momentum correlation between iodine and fluorine cations in three-fold ion coincidence events, we can distinguish the two isomers experimentally. Classical Coulomb explosion simulations are in overall agreement with the experimentally determined fragment ion kinetic energies and momentum correlations and point toward different fragmentation mechanisms and time scales. While most three-body fragmentation channels show clear evidence for sequential fragmentation on a time scale larger than the rotational period of the fragments, the breakup into iodine and fluorine cations and a third charged co-fragment appears to occur within a few hundred femtoseconds -- a time scale larger than the rotational period of the fragments, the breakup in other channels appears to occur within a few hundred femtoseconds.

Abstract:Dissociative photoionization of methyl bromide (CH3Br) in an excitation energy range of 10.45-16.90 eV has been investigated by using threshold photoelectron-photoion coincidence (TPEPICO) velocity imaging. The coincident time-of-flight mass spectra indicate that the ground state X(2)E of CH3Br(+) is stable, and both A(2)A1 and B(2)E ionic excited states are fully dissociative to produce the unique fragment ion of CH3 (+). From TPEPICO 3D time-sliced velocity images of CH3 (+) dissociated from specific state-selected CH3Br(+) ion, kinetic energy release distribution (KERD) and angular distribution of CH3 (+) fragment ion are directly obtained. Both spin-orbit states of Br((2)P) atom can be clearly observed in fast dissociation of CH3Br(+)(A(2)A1) ion along C-Br rupture, while a KERD of Maxwell-Boltzmann profile is obtained in dissociation of CH3Br(+)(B(2)E) ion. With the aid of the re-calculated potential energy curves of CH3Br(+) including spin-orbit coupling, dissociation mechanisms of CH3Br(+) ion in A(2)A1 and B(2)E states along C-Br rupture are revealed. For CH3Br(+)(A(2)A1) ion, the CH3 (+) + Br((2)P1/2) channel is occurred via an adiabatic dissociation by vibration, while the Br((2)P3/2) formation is through vibronic coupling to the high vibrational level of X(2)E state followed by rapid dissociation. C-Br bond breaking of CH3Br(+)(B(2)E) ion can occur via slow internal conversion to the excited vibrational level of the lower electronic states and then dissociation.
Dissociative Recombination of CF$^+$

Abstract:This work presents our theoretical study of the dissociative recombination (DR) of the closed-shell diatomic system CF$^+$ based on an approach recently applied to the CH$^+$ molecule. Our extended treatment uses the UK R-matrix theory and the multichannel quantum-defect theory procedure to uniformly resolve the direct and indirect mechanisms of DR while bypassing explicit dissociative state and electronic coupling calculations. The theoretical results exhibit good overall agreement with previous experimental measurements. At lower scattering energies, good agreement is found only if the rotational structure of the ion is included and the theoretical cross sections are averaged over initial rotational levels corresponding to the temperature at which the experimental measurements were made. At higher scattering energies, our rotationally resolved results are very similar to those obtained without including the ion's rotational structure.

Abstract:Recent molecular beam experiments [1] have shown that infrared multiphoton dissociation of molecules mainly proceeds through the lowest available dissociation channel. Larger molecules may have the two (or more) lowest dissociation channels close in energy. When the laser energy fluence is adequate, the molecules can be excited above the dissociation energies of all these channels, with the branching rate into each available dissociation channel determined by statistical considerations since the excitation energy is expected to be randomized rapidly. In the case of C2F5Cl two competing dissociation channels exist: Cl atom elimination at 83 kcal/mole and C-C bond rupture at 97 kcal/mole. Although C-C bond rupture has appreciably higher dissociation energy, with three more rotational degrees of freedom in the fragments, the rate constant is expected to increase faster than Cl elimination when the excitation energy becomes higher.Consequently, the ratio of Cl elimination to C-C rupture will be a good indicator of the level of excitation. RRKM rate constants for dissociation into these channels are shown in Fig. 1.
Mechanism of the Ultraviolet Photodissociation of Chloroethylenes Determined from the Doppler Profiles, Spatial Anisotropy, and Power Dependence of the Photofragments

Abstract:Doppler profiles of chlorine and hydrogen atomic fragments produced in the photodissociation of mono- and dichloroethylenes at 193 nm have been measured in a pump-and-probe experiment using 2+1 resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization. In a second experiment, the angular distributions of the Cl fragments produced from chloroethylenes at 235 and 238 nm were measured using a perfect-focusing mass spectrometer. In a third experiment, we measured the power dependence of the relative yields of H, Cl, HCl, and HCl+ produced from vinyl chloride at 193 nm. For Cl detachment, two primary processes have been confirmed. One produces an isotropic angular distribution of photofragments, while the other produces an anisotropic distribution. For H atom detachment, an isotropic angular distribution and a Boltzmann velocity distribution were found. The ratio of yields of the Cl and H fragments was found to be 4±1 for CH2CCl2 and higher than 10 for t-CHClCHCl and CCl2CClH. The H, Cl, and HCl yields were found to be first order in laser intensity, while the HCl+ yield was found to be third order. Saturation measurements of the ion yield indicate that the latter results from a 1+1+1 resonance-enhanced process involving a bound state of the parent molecule. This intermediate state may also be responsible for producing the statistical component of the Cl atom product.

Abstract:Pyrene derivatives can absorb onto the surface of carbon nanotubes and graphite particles through pi-pi interactions to functionalize these inorganic building blocks with organic surface moieties. Using single molecule force spectroscopy, we have demonstrated the first direct measurement of the interaction between pyrene and a graphite surface. In particular, we have connected a pyrene molecule onto an AFM tip via a flexible poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chain to ensure the formation of a molecular bridge. The pi-pi interaction between pyrene and graphite is thus indicated to be approximately 55 pN with no hysteresis between the desorption and adhesion forces.

An example is teardrop cells, which may indicate dyserythropoiesis due to circulation through altered bone marrow sinuses and splenic cords. Teardrop cells in a peripheral blood smear are significant and correlate with several diseases, such as iron deficiency anemia, hemolytic anemia, megaloblastic anemia, and metastatic carcinoma due to bone marrow infiltration and myelofibrosis [1, 2]. Myelofibrosis is characterized by a progressive anemia, pancytopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Typically present are splenomegaly and/or hepatomegaly due to extramedullary erythropoiesis, leukoerythroblastosis caused by the lack of space in the bone marrow due to fibrosis, and the presence of myeloid precursors and teardrop cells in peripheral blood. Nowadays, the grading of abnormal red blood cells is semi-quantitative, usually indicated by a score ranging from 1 to 3 + correlating with the percentage of abnormal cells present. A consistent and standardized international grading system for abnormal red blood cells is still lacking, resulting in scoring percentages that differ per laboratory [2]. In our laboratory, the amount of teardrop cells is indicated with 1 + (which stands for 0.5–2% teardrop cells), 2 + (2–5%), and 3 + (>5%) [3]. To date, no cutoff value is established for the percentage of teardrop cells in a peripheral blood smear, discriminating pathology from nonpathology. If a reliable cutoff value can be determined for this red blood cell abnormality, this could lead to a faster and more accurate detection of myelofibrosis and in distinguishing this disease from benignity. How to realize a good, reliable, and automated screening tool for the detection of morphological red blood cell abnormalities (e.g., teardrop cells)? Automated morphological analysis and classification of leukocytes with the use of digital microscopy is nowadays a routine procedure in a large number of laboratories globally [4]. Recently, a novel software tool has been developed to detect and classify morphological abnormalities of red blood cells (advanced RBC application). The advanced RBC application (CellaVision) is basically a RBC cell-locating device. The system identifies and segments red blood cells. Each red blood cell is then characterized for size, shape, color, and inclusion. The characterizations for shape, color, and inclusion are performed by an artificial neural network. This network is trained by a number of highly qualified experts, and the network uses 80 features computed for each RBC image. Examples of used features are size, roundness, distribution of notches around the border, size, and shape of inner pallor. The user can verify or change any suggested morphology. The results are represented as a percentage value and a grading which is based on a conversion table defined by the user in the settings file. We evaluated and validated this module, using a cohort of patient samples and healthy controls, and compared preand postclassification results. Preclassification was performed by the RBC classification module without manual intervention (Figure 1), and the postclassification was performed by a morphological expert. Subsequently, statistical analysis was performed to determine the accuracy and correlation. Classification analysis of teardrop cells was performed on 46 peripheral blood smears from patients in which teardrop cells were present and a cohort of normal blood smears (n = 10). The slides were prepared using the SP10 (slide maker/stainer; Sysmex, Etten-Leur, the Netherlands) from venous blood samples collected in EDTA tubes and stained according to the May–Gr€ unwald– Giemsa stain. Of these 46 patients, fifteen were diagnosed with myelofibrosis, confirmed by bone marrow analysis. Myelofibrosis evolved from polycythemia vera (PV) in four patients and from essential thrombocythemia (ET) in five patients. Three patients were diagnosed with primary myelofibrosis (PMF) and three with idiopathic myelofibrosis (IMF). Abstract:CCl2 free radicals were produced by d-c discharge of CCl4 (in Ar). The ground electronic state CCl2 radical was electronically excited to pR1 level of A1B1(0,4,0) state by laser exciting at 541. 52 nm. Experimental quenching data of · CCl2 (A1B1 and a3B1) through methane and chloromethane were obtained by observing time resolved fluorescence from the excited · CCl2 transition, which showed a superposition of two exponential decay components. The state-resolved rate constants kq1, kq2 and kq3 were first time estimated by analyzing and dealing with these data by using three-level energy model, which was put forward by us. In combining discharge with free jet-LIF the lifetimes of · CCl2 (A→X) and (a→X) transition were measured being(0. 83±0. 03) μs and(3. 12±0. 25) μs, respectively.

Abstract:We have investigated the structural dynamics in photoexcited 1,2-diiodotetrafluoroethane molecules (C2F4I2) in the gas phase experimentally using ultrafast electron diffraction and theoretically using FOMO-CASCI excited state dynamics simulations. The molecules are excited by an ultra-violet femtosecond laser pulse to a state characterized by a transition from the iodine 5p orbital to a mixed 5p|| hole and CF2 antibonding orbital, which results in the cleavage of one of the carbon-iodine bonds. We have observed, with sub-Angstrom resolution, the motion of the nuclear wavepacket of the dissociating iodine atom followed by coherent vibrations in the electronic ground state of the C2F4I radical. The radical reaches a stable classical (non-bridged) structure in less than 200 fs.
