Abstract:The stalk borer Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a major limiting factor in South African sugarcane production, while yield is also reduced by sugarcane thrips Fulmekiola serrata Kobus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). Borer management options include appropriate nitrogen (N) and enhanced silicon (Si) nutrition; the effect of N on sugarcane thrips is unknown. We tested the effects of these nutrients, in combination with resistant (N33) and susceptible (N27) sugarcane cultivars, on E. saccharina and F. serrata infestation. Two pot trials with three levels of N (60, 120, and 180 kg ha(-1)) and two levels each of calcium silicate and dolomitic lime (5 and 10 t ha(-1)) were naturally infested with thrips, then artificially water stressed and infested with borer. Higher N levels increased borer survival and stalk damage, while Si reduced these compared with controls. Silicon significantly reduced stalk damage in N27 but not in N33; hence, Si provided relatively greater protection for susceptible cultivars than for resistant ones. High N treatments were associated with greater thrips numbers, while Si treatments did not significantly influence thrips infestation. The reduction in borer survival and stalk damage by Si application at all N rates indicates that under field conditions, the opportunity exists for optimizing sugarcane yields through maintaining adequate N nutrition, while reducing populations of E. saccharina using integrated pest management (IPM) tactics that include improved Si nutrition of the crop and reduced plant water stress. Improved management of N nutrition may also provide an option for thrips IPM. The contrasting effects of Si on stalk borer and thrips indicate that Si-mediated resistance to insect herbivores in sugarcane has mechanical and biochemical components that are well developed in the stalk tissues targeted by E. saccharina but poorly developed in the young leaf spindles where F. serrata occurs.

Abstract:Water stress may become one of the most inevitable factors in years to come regulating crop growth, development, and productivity globally. The application of eco-friendly stress mitigator may sustain physiological fitness of the plants as uptake and accumulation of silicon (Si) found to alleviate stress with plant performance. Our study focused on the mitigative effects of Si using calcium metasilicate (wollastonite powder, CaO·SiO2) in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) prior to the exposure of water stress created by the retention of 50–45% soil moisture capacity. Si (0, 50, 100, and 500 ppm L–1) was supplied through soil irrigation in S. officinarum L. grown at about half of the soil moisture capacity for a period of 90 days. Water stress impaired plant growth, biomass, leaf relative water content, SPAD value, photosynthetic pigments capacity, and photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) of photosystem II. The levels of antioxidative defense-induced enzymes, viz., catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase, enhanced. Silicon-treated plants expressed positive correlation with their performance index. A quadratic nonlinear relation observed between loss and gain (%) in physiological and biochemical parameters during water stress upon Si application. Si was found to be effective in restoring the water stress injuries integrated to facilitate the operation of antioxidant defense machinery in S. officinarum L. with improved plant performance index and photosynthetic carbon assimilation.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Production of sugarcane and more recently of energy cane strengthen renewable bioenergy production capacity. However, droughts resulting from climate change have limited the production of these crops. One of the strategies to attenuate water deficit damage in these crops is the use of silicate, which contributes to plant physiology. This strategy is likely to increase water use efficiency, thus promoting crop sustainability. Notwithstanding, studies on this issue are still incipient. This study assesses whether Si applied via fertigation and foliar spraying in the seedling production phase and as a complement after seedling transplanting to the soil is efficient in attenuating water deficit in sugarcane and energy cane. The study further elucidates physiological and biochemical mechanisms involved in this process. For this, the authors conducted two experiments: one with sugarcane and the other with energy cane. Treatments were arranged in randomized blocks with 5 replications, in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme. Factors consisted of the absence (-Si) and presence of Si (+ Si) applied via fertigation and foliar spraying; and two water regimes: 70% (without water deficit) and 30% (severe water deficit) of the soil water retention capacity. Silicon was supplied during the formation phase of presprouted seedlings and during the transplanting of seedlings to pots filled with samples of Entisol (Quartzipsamment). In these pots, water regimes were induced from 7 to 160 days after transplanting. Severe water deficit reduced the water content and water potential of plants. This situation induced oxidative stress and impaired gas exchange and photosynthetic water use efficiency, reducing plant growth. Silicon supply via fertigation in association with foliar spraying in the seedling formation phase with complementation after transplanting was efficient in increasing Si accumulation in the plants. Silicon was effective in attenuating severe water deficit damage up to initial culm formation through mechanisms that maintain water and physiological balance by favoring the antioxidant defense system in sugarcane and energy cane plants.

Abstract:Bipolaris setariae is known to cause brown stripe disease in sugarcane, resulting in significant yield losses. Silicon (Si) has the potential to enhance plant growth and biotic resistance. In this study, the impact of Si on brown stripe disease was investigated across susceptible and resistant sugarcane varieties, utilizing four Si concentrations (0, 15, 30, and 45 g per barrel of Na2SiO3·5H2O). Si significantly reduced the incidence of brown stripe disease (7.41–59.23%) and alleviated damage to sugarcane growth parameters, photosynthetic parameters, and photosynthetic pigments. Submicroscopic observations revealed that Si induced the accumulation of silicified cells in leaves, reduced spore accumulation, decreased stomatal size, and protected organelles from B. setariae damage. In addition, Si increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase), reduced reactive oxygen species production (malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide) and modulated the expression of genes associated with hormone signalling (PR1, TGA, AOS, AOC, LOX, PYL8, and SnRK2), leading to the accumulation of abscisic acid and jasmonic acid and inhibiting SA synthesis. Si also activated the activity of metabolism‐related enzymes (polyphenol oxidase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase) and the gene expression of PAL‐dependent genes (PAL, C4H, and 4CL), regulating the accumulation of metabolites, such as chlorogenic acid and lignin. The antifungal test showed that chlorogenic acid (15ug μL−1) had a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of B. setariae. This study is the first to demonstrate the inhibitory effect of Si on B. setariae in sugarcane, highlighting Si as a promising and environmentally friendly strategy for managing brown stripe disease.

Abstract:Plant cell and water relationship regulates morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics to optimize carboxylation for enhanced biomass yield in sugarcane. Insufficient water irrigation is one of the serious problems to impair potential yield of agriculturally important sugarcane cash crop by loss in plant performance. Our study aims to reveal consequences of foliar spray of silicon (Si) using calcium metasilicate powder (Wollastonite, CaO.SiO2) to alleviate the adverse effects of limited water irrigation in sugarcane. Silicon (0, 50, 100 and 500 ppm) was applied as foliar spray on normally grown 45 days old sugarcane plants. Further, these plants were raised at half field capacity (50%) using water irrigation precisely up to 90 days under open environmental variables. Consequently, restricted irrigation impaired plant growth-development, leaf relative water content (%), photosynthetic pigments, SPAD unit, photosynthetic performance, chlorophyll fluorescence variable yield (Fv/Fm) and biomass yield. Notably, it has enhanced values of proline, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA), antioxidative defense enzyme molecules viz., catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The foliar spray of Si defended sugarcane plants from limited water irrigation stress as Si quenched harmful effect of water-deficit and also enhanced the operation of antioxidant defense machinery for improved sugarcane plant performance suitably favored stomatal dynamics for photosynthesis and plant productivity.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) plays an important role in the sustainable agriculture industry. The increasing demand for crop production with a significant reduction of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticide use is a big challenge nowadays. The use of Si has been proven to be an environmentally sound way of enhancing crop productivity by facilitating plant growth and development through either a direct or indirect mechanism, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. In particular, it has been investigated for its role in water stress management. The aim of the current experiment was to examine the protective role of Si in the photosynthetic capacity of different leaf segments and the ultrastructure of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarm) plants under water stress. Sugarcane cv. GT 42 plants were supplied with 0, 100, 300, and 500 mg L–1 Si and exposed for 60 days under each stress condition such as 100–95, 55–50, and 35–30% of field capacity. For the photosynthetic responses, each leaf was observed and separated into three equal parts (base, middle, and tip). We used intact leaves and were able to assess leaf photosynthetic responses. Under moderate and severe stress conditions, applied Si increased the photosynthesis (base, ∼16–143%; middle, 20–66%; and tip leaf part, 41–71%), transpiration rate (base, 15–97%; middle, 26–68%; and tip leaf part, 6–61%), and stomatal conductance (base, 26–137%; middle, 12–70%; and tip leaf part, 7–75%) in sugarcane plants. Ultrastructural examination of sugarcane leaves using scanning electron microscopy showed the remarkable effects on stomata ultrastructure. Silicon increased plant growth development, photosynthetic efficiency, and biomass/yield, and promoted better adaptation of stomata to drought. This study suggests that the application of Si may be used to increase the stress tolerance of sugarcane plants.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is essential to the nutritional status of many monocot and dicot plant species, and it aids them in resisting abiotic and biotic challenges in various ways. This article explained the progress in exploring silicon-mediated resistance to sugarcane insect pests, its role in increasing juice quality attributes and cane production, the silicon status of soil and uptake by sugarcane plant, and the mechanisms involved. The aim is to determine the influence of different sources of Si application on the availability of silicon in soil, silicon uptake by plants, silicon effect in minimizing biotic stresses such as defence against sugarcane insect pest herbivory along with its effect on sugarcane yield in terms of juice and other component traits. There are two basic modes of action: enhanced physical or mechanical barriers and biochemical or molecular mechanisms that activate plant defence responses via bitrophic (plant-herbivore) interactions and tritrophic (plant-herbivore-natural enemy) interactions. By integrating the data reported in this research, a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between various sources of silicon treatments, increased sugarcane plant resistance and decreased sugarcane insect pest damage might be attained.

In vitro silicon supplementation enhanced acclimatisation and growth of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) via improved antioxidant and nutrient acquisition patterns in saline soil

Abstract:Salinity affects crop growth by modulating cellular ionic concentrations and generation of reactive oxygen species. Application of silicon (Si) has proved beneficial in ameliorating salinity-triggered plant growth and yield retardations. Leaf roll explants of three sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum ) genotypes (HSF-240, CPF-246, CPF-250) were cultured in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with K2 SiO3 . In vitro regenerated plantlets were acclimatised and grown in natural saline soil. In absence of Si, cv. CPF-246 exhibited better salt tolerance as indicted by maximum chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents, rate of photosynthesis and root K+ uptake along with less cellular hydrogen peroxide content. Silicon restricted root Na+ uptake but assisted in K+ , Ca2+ , Mg2+ and Fe2+ accretion in roots and their translocation towards shoots. Cv. HSF-240 and cv. CPF-250 exhibited more increase in photosynthetic pigment content, stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate after addition of 25 or 50mgL-1 Si than control group. Optimum phenolic content and antioxidant enzyme activity along with decreased lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide content were recorded in all three sugarcane genotypes raised in presence of 25 or 50mgL-1 Si. These findings signify Si supplementation (50mgL-1 ) in tissue culture medium and plant adaptation in saline soil. Further in vitro studies involving Si-mediated gene expression modulations in sugarcane protoplasts shall assist in deciphering cross-talk between Si uptake and cellular responses. The application of Si can further be tested for other plant species to devise strategies for improved crop growth and utilisation of saline areas for crop cultivation.
Effects of Silicon on the Physiological and Biochemical Characteristics of Roots of Rice Seedlings under Water Stress

Abstract:【Objective】 In order to clarify the mechanism of silicon(Si) in enhancing the resistance to water stress,the effects of Si on the physiological and biochemical characteristics of the roots of rice seedlings were investigated under water stress.【Method】 The effects of exogenous Si on the physiological and biochemical parameters of roots of rice [(Oryza sativa ssp.(keng) Ting cv.Xiushui 11) and Brazilian upland rice(O.sativa cv.IAPAR 9)] were investigated under water stress induced by polyethylene glycol(PEG) in hydroponic conditions.【Result】 Exogenous Si could restrain excessive respiration,and increase the dry matter weight and relative water content of the PEG-stressed rice roots.On the 8th day after PEG treatment,the malondialdehyde(MDA) content in the roots of both Si-treated rice cultivars was decreased by 23% and 21%,and the relative electrolyte leakage was decreased by 39% and 38%,respectively,as compared to those of PEG treatment only.Consequently,the plasma membrane stability of the stressed roots was enhanced by Si application.In addition,exogenous Si also increased the root antioxidant defense capacity,slowed down the degradation of abscisic acid(ABA) in rice roots under PEG stress.【Conclusion】 Silicon application could enhance the resistance of rice roots to water deficit stress by preventing the rapid decline of physiological and biochemical activities in roots.
Suppressive Effect of Silicon Nutrient on Phomopsis Stem Blight Development in Asparagus

Abstract:The effects of silicon nutrition on the resistance to stem blight caused by Phomopsis asparagi was assessed in two asparagus cultivars, UC157 and Gynlim, and the activation of defense responses in inoculated plants was measured in a greenhouse with nutrient solution culture. The supply of silicon (Si) significantly suppressed stem blight development in inoculated plants. The disease index was significantly reduced in Si-supplied plants compared with Si-deprived plants in both cultivars. Supplement with Si enhanced Si accumulation in asparagus root and shoot. Si content was significantly higher in Si-treated plants when compared with control plants, but it was not significantly different between the two cultivars. Interestingly, inoculation with P. asparagi increased Si content in shoots in the cultivar UC157. Root-applied Si significantly enhanced the activities of pathogenesis-related proteins (PRs) such as catalase, peroxidase, polyphenoloxidase, and β-1, 3-glucanase in inoculated plants. However, Si treatment mostly failed to change significantly the activity of PRs in plants without fungal attack. So continuous feeding of Si to the plant is probably important for enhancing the resistance to infection by P. asparagi in asparagus.
Silicon attenuates aluminum toxicity in sugarcane plants by modifying growth, roots morphoanatomy, photosynthetic pigments, and gas exchange parameters

Abstract:Aluminum (Al) inhibits growth and limits plant productivity in acidic soils. An important strategy to increase Al tolerance is the use of silicon (Si) nutrition. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the interactive role of Si in increasing the growth, physiological and morphoanatomy responses of sugarcane plants under Al toxicity. A 4 × 2 factorial scheme in a completely randomized design was used to study the impact of Si (2 mM) on attenuating Al toxicity (0, 10, 15 and 20 mg L −1 , as Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·18H 2 O) in sugarcane seedlings. After 45 days, Al toxicity affected sugarcane growth by increasing Al uptake and accumulation, modifying root growth, thickness, and morphoanatomy, and decreasing pigment content, gas exchange parameters, and the number of adaxial and abaxial stomata. However, Si attenuated Al toxicity in the sugarcane seedlings by limiting Al uptake and transport to the shoots, causing positive changes in root morphoanatomy, higher pigment content, improving gas exchange parameters, thereby increased growth. Furthermore, cultivar 'CTC9003' showed beneficial impacts from Si supplementation than 'CTC9002', especially under Al toxicity. The findings of this study suggest that Si plays a notable role in improving anatomical and physiological aspects, particularly the growth of sugarcane seedlings under Al toxicity.

Abstract:A series of experiments were performed to study the effects of silicon (Si) on rice blast development, H 2 O 2 accumulation and lipid peroxidation in a controlled rice— Magnaporthe grisea pathosystem. Rice plants supplied with Si as a single dose immediately after pathogen inoculation (−/+Si) exhibited the same high protection against disease as plants treated continuously with Si for the whole growth period (+/+Si), with disease severity indices of 20.8% and 19.6%, respectively, which were significantly lower than that for the control treatment with no Si supplied (63.7%). A single application of Si to rice plants before inoculation (+/−Si) conferred partial protection (disease severity index of 33.3%) compared with the control treatment. Silicon induced a rapid but transient burst of H 2 O 2 at 24 h after inoculation. The addition of Si to rice plants significantly altered the activities of catalase and lipoxygenase and the concentration of malodialdehyde (indicative of lipid peroxidation) in rice plants. We propose that rice plants may respond to Si by increased H 2 O 2 accumulation and lipid peroxidation. In turn, these responses are linked to host defence mechanisms such as lignin production, oxidative cross-linking in the cell wall, phytoalexin production, and the hypersensitive reaction. Thus, the mechanisms of Si-stimulated plant disease protection may extend beyond its established role in physically strengthening cell walls.
Silicon Amendment Escalates Cellular Si Deposition and Antioxidant Enzyme Defense against Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) Attack in Rice

Abstract:Yellow stem borer of rice Scirpophaga incertulas, significantly reduce rice production throughout Asia. Silicon (Si) amendment in rice for resistance against biotic stress is gaining importance to protect crops from insect herbivory. Exogenous application of silicon in form of DAE (diatomaceous earth) at 0.5 to 2.5 g kg −1 and RHA (rice husk ash) at 5.0 to 15.0 g kg −1 soil significantly improved silicon uptake and reduced borer damage in both susceptible (TN1) and moderately resistant (GNR3) rice cultivars exhibiting the enhanced resistance against S. incertulas with a yield benefit to the tune of 1.91- fold over control. Si addition through DAE at 2.0 g kg −1 soil registered a maximum of 1.55 and 2.27- fold increased Si uptake by TN1 and GNR3 plants respectively as against a corresponding increase of 2.37 and 2.24-fold by 12.5 g RHA kg −1 soil. Chlorophyll was highest in plants receiving low dose of silicon and showed a downward trend with increase in dose. Feeding stimuli from S. incertulas larvae led to intense leaf silicificationly with significant increased silica cell deposit per mm row length, increased lobe size, and minimal distance between adjacent silica cells as evidenced from scanning electron microscopic studies. Increased Si content along with biotic stress activated antioxidant enzyme (super oxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidise) defense in rice to mitigate oxidative stress. RHA supplemented plants with YSB infestation showed increased activity of the non-oxidative enzymes like phenylalanine lyase (3.5- fold) and tyrosine ammonia lyase (13.0 -fold) over control conferring a greater defense to paddy through induction of signal transduction process. The study thus, demonstrated the benefit of soil amendment with DAE and RHA in inducing host resistance against S. incertulas , as an eco-holistic approach in pest management in rice. Further, the finding is expected to be helpful in genetic mapping of known YSB resistance gene markers of candidate genes like hexose transporter, amino acid transporter and other genes related to defense signal mechanisms via jasmonic acid pathway.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) uptake is generally beneficial for plants that need protection from insect herbivores. In pursue of mechanisms involved in Si-mediated defense, we comprehensively explored the impact of Si on several defensive and metabolic traits in rice exposed to simulated and real herbivory of Mythimna loreyi Duponchel larvae. Hydroponic experiments showed that Si-deprived rice supplemented with Si 72 h prior to insect infestation were similarly resistant to larvae as plants continuously grown in Si-containing media. Both Si and herbivory altered primary metabolism in rice, including the levels of several sugars, amino acids, and organic acids. While the accumulation of sugars was generally positively correlated with Si presence, multiple amino acids showed a negative correlation trend with Si supplementation. The levels of secondary metabolites, including isopentylamine, p -coumaroylputrescine and feruloylputrescine, were typically higher in the leaves of Si-supplemented plants exposed to herbivory stress compared to Si-deprived plants. In addition, simulated herbivory treatment in Si-supplemented plants induced more volatile emissions relative to Si-deprived plants, which was consistent with the increased transcripts of key genes involved in volatile biosynthesis. In ecological interactions, Si alone did not affect the oviposition choice of M. loreyi but gravid females showed a significant preference for simulated herbivory-treated/Si-deprived compared to Si-supplemented plants. Our data suggest that apart from mechanical defense, Si may affect rice metabolism in multiple ways that might enhance/modulate defense responses of rice under herbivory stress.

Abstract:To analyze how silicon (Si) fertilizer improves plant growth under water stress, we investigated the growth and root responses of sorghum seedlings to Si application. Seedlings were grown hydroponically at two Si levels (0 and 1.78 mM) and under two water stress conditions simulated with polyethylene glycol. The reduction in dry weight due to stress was alleviated by Si application, accompanied by an increase in root water uptake. Silicon application decreased the osmotic potential of the roots without affecting their water content, showing that osmotic adjustment occurred to increase water uptake. An assessment of root solutes suggested that soluble sugar and amino acids (alanine and glutamic acid) were osmolytes responsible for this adjustment. Root anatomical traits related to water transport were not affected by the Si application. These results improved our understanding of the physiological mechanisms that underlie the Si-induced increases in sorghum growth and water uptake under water stress.
Silicon Improves the Tolerance to Water-Deficit Stress Induced by Polyethylene Glycol in Wheat (triticum Aestivum L.) Seedlings

Abstract:Drought stress usually causes a serious yield reduction in wheat production. Silicon (Si) has been reported to be able to alleviate drought stress damage; however, the mechanism is still poorly understood. In this article, the effects of Si (as sodium silicate) on some parameters related to oxidative damage, proline, soluble sugar, and inorganic ions in the leaves of wheat under 20% (w/v) polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) simulative drought stress are investigated. PEG stress depressed the growth of shoot and root and decreased leaf water potential and chlorophyll concentration. Addition of 1.0 mM Si could partially improve the growth of shoot (but not root) and increase the leaf chlorophyll concentrations of stressed plants. Inclusion of Si in culture solution also maintained leaf water potential of stressed plants at the same level as that of the control plants. PEG stress induced significant accumulation of leaf hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) as well as an increase in electrolyte leakage, which were all decreased by added silicon. These results suggest that stress-induced membrane lipid peroxidation could be partly alleviated by added silicon. Moreover, the results were also supported by the observation that PEG stress-induced decrease in glutathione concentration in the leaves was reversed by added silicon. The proline concentration in the leaves was markedly increased under PEG stress, whereas added silicon partially reversed this. PEG stress decreased the leaf soluble sugar concentration. There were significant negative regressions between proline concentration and both shoot dry weight and leaf chlorophyll concentrations, whereas there were positive regressions between the proline concentration and both H2O2 and MDA concentrations in the leaves, supporting the view that proline accumulation is a symptom of stress damage rather than stress tolerance. Addition of Si obviously increased Si accumulation in the shoot. Analyses of Na, Mg, K, and Ca showed no accumulation of these ions in the shoot (on the basis of per tissue dry weight) under water stress, and added Si even decreased their concentrations. These results suggest that under short-term PEG-induced water stress conditions (1 week), antioxidant defense, rather than osmotic adjustment, contributed to the improved wheat growth by Si.
Silicon Stimulates Plant Growth and Metabolism in Rice Plants under Conventional and Osmotic Stress Conditions

Abstract:Exogenous silicon (Si) can enhance plant resistance to various abiotic factors causing osmotic stress. The objective of this research was to evaluate the application of 1 and 2 mM Si to plants under normal conditions and under osmotic stress. Morelos A-98 rice seedlings, were treated with 1 and 2 mM SiO2 for 28 d. Subsequently, half of the plants were subjected to osmotic stress with the addition of 10% polyethylene glycol (PEG) 8000; and continued with the addition of Si (0, 1 and 2 mM SiO2) for both conditions. The application of Si under both conditions increased chlorophyll b in leaves, root volume, as well as fresh and dry biomass of roots. Interestingly, the number of tillers, shoot fresh and dry biomass, shoot water content, concentration of total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a/b ratio, and the concentration of total sugars and proline in shoot increased with the addition of Si under osmotic stress conditions. The addition of Si under normal conditions decreased the concentration of sugars in the roots, K and Mn in roots, and increased the concentration of Fe and Zn in shoots. Therefore, Si can be used as a potent inorganic biostimulant in rice Morelos A-98 since it stimulates plant growth and modulates the concentration of vital biomolecules and essential nutrients.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) deficiency, caused by acidic soil and rainy climate, is a major constraint for sugarcane production in southern China. Si application generally improves sugarcane growth; however, there are few studies on the relationships between enhanced plant growth, changes in rhizosphere soil, and bacterial communities. A field experiment was conducted to measure sugarcane agronomic traits, plant nutrient contents, rhizosphere soil enzyme activities and chemical properties, and the rhizosphere bacterial community diversity and structure of three predominant sugarcane varieties under two Si treatments, i.e., 0 and 200 kg of silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) ha −1 regarded as Si0 and Si200, respectively. Results showed that Si application substantially improved the sugarcane stalk fresh weight and Si, phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) contents comparing to Si0, and had an obvious impact on rhizosphere soil pH, available Si (ASi), available P (AP), available K (AK), total phosphorus (TP), and the activity of acid phosphatase. Furthermore, the relative abundances of Proteobacteria showed a remarkable increase in Si200, which may be the dominant group in sugarcane growth under Si application. Interestingly, the AP was noticed as a major factor that caused bacterial community structure differences between the two Si treatments according to canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). In addition, the association network analysis indicated that Si application enriched the rhizosphere bacterial network, which could be beneficial to sugarcane growth. Overall, appropriate Si application, i.e., 200 kg SiO 2 ha −1 promoted sugarcane growth, changed rhizosphere soil enzyme activities and chemical properties, and bacterial community structures.

Abstract:Background: C:N:P homeostasis in plants guarantees optimal levels of these nutrients in plant metabolism. H However, one of the causes to the effects of deficit irrigation is the loss of C:N:P homeostasis in leaves and stems that causes reduction in the growth of sugarcane. Being able to measure the impact of water deficit on C:N:P homeostasis in plants from the stoichiometric ratios of the concentrations of these nutrients in leaves and stems. This loss causes a decrease in nutritional efficiency, but can be mitigated with the use of silicon. Silicon favors the homeostasis of these nutrients and crop productivity. The magnitude of this benefit depends on the absorption of Si by the plant and Si availability in the soil, which varies with the type of soil used. Thus, this study aims to evaluate whether the application of Si via fertigation is efficient in increasing the absorption of Si and whether it is capable of modifying the homeostatic balance of C:N:P of the plant, causing an increase in nutritional efficiency and consequently in the production of biomass in leaves and stems of sugarcane ratoon cultivated with deficient and adequate irrigations in different tropical soils. Results: Water deficit caused biological losses in concentrations and accumulation of C, N, and P, and reduced the nutrient use efficiency and biomass production of sugarcane plants cultivated in three tropical soils due to disturbances in the stoichiometric homeostasis of C:N:P. The application of Si increased the concentration and accumulation of Si, C, N, and P and their use efficiency and reduced the biological damage caused by water deficit due to the modification of homeostatic balance of C:N:P by ensuring sustainability of the production of sugarcane biomass in tropical soils. However, the intensity of attenuation of such deleterious effects stood out in plants cultivated in Eutrophic Red Oxisols. Si contributed biologically by improving the performance of sugarcane ratoon with an adequate irrigation due to the optimization of stoichiometric ratios of C:N:P; increased the accumulation and the use efficiency of C, N, and P, and promoted production gains in biomass of sugarcane in three tropical soils. Conclusion: Our study shows that fertigation with Si can mitigate the deleterious effects of deficient irrigation or potentiate the beneficial effects using an adequate irrigation system due to the induction of a new stoichiometric homeostasis of C:N:P, which in turn improves the nutritional efficiency of sugarcane cultivated in tropical soils.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In this study, it was verified whether silicon (Si) affected plant hydraulic resistance, which was one of the significant factors affecting water uptake. Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. was grown hydroponically under varying silicon levels and exposed to osmotic stresses. Under osmotic stress, reduction in growth, photosynthesis, and transpiration were alleviated as supplied silicon levels increased. These alleviative effects were ascribed to enhancement of water uptake. Although shoot/root ratio was not affected by silicon, estimated apparent hydraulic resistance was lower in silicon-supplied sorghum than silicon-deficient one under osmotic stress. Simultaneous measurement of transpiration and water uptake rates indicated that under osmotic stress silicon-deficient sorghums showed unbalanced water relation that transpiration rate exceeded water uptake rate, while they were balanced in silicon-supplied sorghums. The results indicated that silicon improved hydraulic resistance, allowing sorghum to avoid from decrease in water uptake rate that happens to silicon-deficient sorghum under water stress.
