Abstract:Landscape pattern critically affects hydrological cycling and the processes of non-point source nutrients pollution. However, little is known about the quantitative relationship between landscape characteristics and the river water quality, and very few studies have addressed the abrupt changes in river water quality with the gradient of landscape metrics. The present study was conducted in a typically intensive agriculture watershed of eastern China including 13 sub-watersheds with different landscape pattern metrics. We adopted redundancy analysis, nonparametric deviance reduction approach, bootstrap sampling and other statistical methods to reveal the quantitative relationship between landscape pattern metrics and water quality variables; then, the phenomenon of an abrupt change in river water quality was explored with different landscape pattern gradients. The results show that landscape pattern significantly affects river water quality, and this effect was quite different in dry and rainy seasons. In the studied watershed, landscape pattern metrics could respectively explain 71.1% and 55.3% of the total variance in the river water quality in dry and rainy seasons. The configuration metrics of landscape pattern had a stronger ability than their composition metrics to explain the variance in water quality. In the dry season, largest patch index of forestland (LPIfor), the most important landscape index, explained 37.9% of the total variance in water quality. While, in the rainy season, the most important landscape index was the largest patch index of farmland (LPIfar), and it could explain 32.4% of that variance. In the studied watershed, when the LPIfor was <35% or LPIfar was over than 50%, water quality would typically change abruptly, at which the probability of a change in river water would suddenly rise substantially.
[Influence of Landscape Characteristics on Non-Point Source Pollutant Output in Taihu Upper-River Basin].

Abstract:Based on the observed data in monitored drainage areas and GIS spatial analysis tools, watershed basic database of Taihu upper-river basin was built. Using the methods of multiple stepwise regression and redundancy analysis, the influence of landscape characteristics on non-point source pollutant output at the outlets of watersheds and their relative influence intensity were analyzed. The dominant landscape characteristics influencing non-point source pollutant output in Taihu upper-river basin and sub-watersheds were also illustrated. The results show that there are strong correlations between non-point source pollution and landscape characteristics, in which land use makes the most remarkable effect, followed by soil characteristics and average slope and watershed area in turn. Residential land proportion, farmland proportion and average terrain slope with higher importance and significance level, are the dominant landscape characteristics variables affecting non-point source pollutant output of watersheds. 59.5% of water quality information and 98.6% of relation information between landscape characteristics and water quality can be explained by these three variables. Furthermore, the contribution rates of these three landscape characteristics to non-point source pollutant output in each sub-watershed are different.

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality is critically important for estimating pollution potential and reducing pollution risk. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality at both spatial and temporal scales. The study took place in the Jinjing River watershed in 2010; seven landscape types and four water quality pollutions were chosen as analysis parameters. Three different buffer areas along the river were drawn to analyze the relationship as a function of spatial scale. The results of a Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis suggest that “source” landscape, namely, tea gardens, residential areas, and paddy lands, have positive effects on water quality parameters, while forests exhibit a negative influence on water quality parameters because they represent a “sink” landscape and the sub-watershed level is identified as a suitable scale. Using the principal component analysis, tea gardens, residential areas, paddy lands, and forests were identified as the main landscape index. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was employed to model the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality for each season. The results demonstrate that both landscape composition and configuration affect water quality. In summer and winter, the landscape metrics explained approximately 80.7 % of the variance in the water quality variables, which was higher than that for spring and fall (60.3 %). This study can help environmental managers to understand the relationships between landscapes and water quality and provide landscape ecological approaches for water quality control and land use management.

Abstract:The northern region of loess plateau in China, where is cross water-wind erosion, is typical ecosystem environment fragile zone with serious soil erosion. The research on soil erosion prediction is very urgently. However, due to special geography of loess plateau, social and economic condition, the application of oversea prediction models is suffered to limit. We must develop a suite nation situation prediction model. For this, according to the purpose to predict soil erosion, we propose a soil erosion ecological prediction way. The Liudaogou small watershed, which is located in cross zone of water-wind erosion in the north of loess plateau in China, is taken as studying area. According to theprinciple of soil erosion, we select some main affecting factors as cartographic generalization objects. They respectively are landforms surface material composition, slope gradient and land utilization ways. On the based of cartographic generalization with GIS, according to combinatorics principles, the ecological landform unit is formed. In the Liudaogou small watershed, there are 83 kinds of ecological landform unit scattered in (284) plots. The soil erosion basically occurs on wasteland, slope land and sparse shrub land with the slope gradient of 15°~25°, and their areas sums up about 50% of whole watershed.

Abstract:Landscape patterns have a substantial effect on non-point source (NPS) pollution in watersheds. Facilitating sustainable development of mountain-rural areas is a major priority for China. Knowledge of the impacts of various landscapes on water quality in these areas is critical to meeting environmental goals. This study applied the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to create a hydrologic and water quality model of the study watershed; then, the relationship between water quality and landscape patterns was investigated using multiple linear regression and redundancy analysis. The results show that the western sub-basins had higher nitrogen pollution loads, and the total nitrogen concentration reached a maximum value of 3.91 mg/L; the eastern sub-basins had a higher pollution load of phosphorous featured by maximum total phosphorous concentration of 2.15 mg/L. The water quality of the entire watershed in all scenarios tended to deteriorate over time. Landscape metrics accounted for 81.7% of the total variation in pollutant indicators. The percentage of forest landscape was negatively correlated with NPS pollution, while other types of landscape showed a positive correlation. The patch density, landscape shape index, and largest patch index of urban and agricultural lands were negatively correlated with pollutant concentrations. Upland landscapes contributed more pollutants than paddy fields. Some measures, e.g., returning grassland and farmland to forest in steep regions and replacing upland crops with paddy fields, were recommended for mitigating NPS pollution in the study watershed.

Abstract:Soil erosion has become a major global environmental problem and is particularly acute on the Loess Plateau (LP), China. It is therefore highly important to control this process in order to improve ecosystems, protect ecological security, and maintain the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. We compared the effects of rainfall and land use (LU) patterns on soil erosion in different LP watersheds in this study in order to augment and improve soil erosion models. As most research on this theme has so far been focused on individual study areas, limited analyses of rainfall and LU patterns on soil erosion within different- scale watersheds has so far been performed, a discrepancy which might influence the simulation accuracies of soil erosion models. We therefore developed rainfall and LU pattern indices in this study using the soil erosion evaluation index as a reference and applied them to predict the extent of this process in different-scale watersheds, an approach which is likely to play a crucial role in enabling the comprehensive management of this phenomenon as well as the optimized design of LU patterns. The areas considered in this study included the Qingjian, Fenchuan, Yanhe, and Dali river watersheds. Results showed that the rainfall erosivity factor (R) tended to increase in these areas from 2006 to 2012, while the vegetation cover and management factor (C) tended to decrease. Results showed that as watershed area increased, the effect of rainfall pattern on soil erosion gradually decreased while patterns in LU trended in the opposite direction, as the relative proportion of woodland decreased and the different forms of steep slope vegetation cover became more homogenous. As watershed area increased, loose soil and craggy terrain properties led to additional gravitational erosion and enhanced the effects of both soil and topography.

Abstract:The Liudaogou small watershed,which is located at crisscross region of water and wind erosions in northern loess plateau of China,is taken as a study area.According to the principle of soil erosion,we selected some main affecting factors to generate the fundamental graphs.They are landforms surface material composition,soil types,slope gradient and land use ways respectively.Based on GIS platform,cartographic generalization were conducted and the ecological landform unit is formed.In the Liudaogou small watershed,there are 285 ecological landform units dvided into 83 kinds,in which only 16 kinds are more important.The erosion modules of different kind ecological landform units are analyzed and calculated.Through combination of erosion modules for kinds of ecological unit in whole watershed the soil water erosion modules for rainfall intensity of 2mm/min and 1.5 mm/min are simulated in the small watershed.The results show that the simulation method can predict soil's water erosion module of whole watershed under different rainfall intensities,reflect the spatial difference of soil water modules in the whole watershed.The most serious section of soil water erosion is the slope land,shrubbery and grassland with gradient of 15°~25° in the watershed,and is not the whole watershed.The predictive result can provide scientific basis for layout of soil and water conservation measures.

Abstract:Chinese Loess Plateau is considered as one of the most serious soil loss regions in the world, its annual sediment output accounts for 90 % of the total sediment loads of the Yellow River, and most of the Loess Plateau has a very typical characteristic of “soil and water flow together”, and water flow in this area performs with a high sand content. Serious soil loss results in nitrogen and phosphorus loss of soil. Special processes of water and soil in the Loess Plateau lead to the loss mechanisms of water, sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus are different from each other, which are greatly different from other areas of China. In this study, the modified export coefficient method considering the rainfall erosivity factor was proposed to simulate and evaluate non-point source (NPS) nitrogen and phosphorus loss load caused by soil and water loss in the Yanhe River basin of the hilly and gully area, Loess Plateau. The results indicate that (1) compared with the traditional export coefficient method, annual differences of NPS total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) load after considering the rainfall erosivity factor are obvious; it is more in line with the general law of NPS pollution formation in a watershed, and it can reflect the annual variability of NPS pollution more accurately. (2) Under the traditional and modified conditions, annual changes of NPS TN and TP load in four counties (districts) took on the similar trends from 1999 to 2008; the load emission intensity not only is closely related to rainfall intensity but also to the regional distribution of land use and other pollution sources. (3) The output structure, source composition, and contribution rate of NPS pollution load under the modified method are basically the same with the traditional method. The average output structure of TN from land use and rural life is about 66.5 and 17.1 %, the TP is about 53.8 and 32.7 %; the maximum source composition of TN (59 %) is farmland; the maximum source composition of TP (38.1 %) is rural life; the maximum contribution rates of TN and TP in Baota district are 36.26 and 39.26 %, respectively. Results may provide data support for NPS pollution prevention and control in the loess hilly and gully region and also provide scientific reference for the protection of ecological environment of the Loess Plateau in northern Shaanxi.

Abstract:Shenfu-Dongsheng mine region,which is in the central of wind-water interaction zone of the Loess Plateau,was taken as researching region.Loess,sand loess,sand,regolith and accumulation of waste mine residue were taken as researching material.By the tests of artificial simulation of rainfall on sloping land with different material and on the sloping land with same material(sand) and different accumulation years,and the statistic analysis of test data with SPSS and DPS,some new and peculiar water erosion processes were observed and described.The conclusions were listed as following.①In the similar conditions,the order of erosion modulus per set artificial simulated rainfall is loesssand loesssand slopeaccumulation of waste mine residueregolith).②In the same the intensity of rainfall and slope,it is easier to come into being the runoff and gully on the sloping land with loess than sand loess,but the gully evolution is speedier on the sloping land with sand loess than loess.③On regolith slope land with much rock block,erosion modulus increase as intensity of rainfall increase.The runoff silt content is the highest at initial stages of runoff forming and goes gradually lower and more stable.④On the sloping land with same material(sand) and different accumulation years,the soil erodibility increases as accumulation years increase and erosion modulus decreases from 16 379 t/(km~2·a) to 1 227 t/(km~2·a),under the conditions of no human activity.⑤On the accumulation slope of waste mine residue,slide and landslide are main erosion ways,the processes of runoff silt content is undulate,there is debris processes with short time and high silt content.
Spatiotemporal variations and risk characteristics of potential non-point source pollution driven by LUCC in the Loess Plateau Region, China

Abstract:With increasing human activities, regional substrate conditions have undergone significant changes. These changes have resulted in temporal and spatial variations of non-point source pollution sources, which has a significant impact on the quality of the regional soil, surface water, and groundwater environments. This study focused on the human-disturbed Loess Plateau region and used an enhanced potential non-point-source pollution index (PNPI) model to explore the dynamic changes of regional potential non-point-source pollution (PNP) and the associated risk due to land use and land cover change (LUCC) over the past 31 years. The Loess Plateau region is mainly composed of cultivated land, grassland and forest, which together account for 93.5% of the watershed area. From 1990 to 2020, extensive soil and water conservation measures were implemented throughout the Loess Plateau region, resulting in a significant reduction in the non-point source pollution risk. Using the quantile classification method, the study area's PNP risk values were categorized into five distinct levels. The results revealed a polarization phenomenon of PNP risk in the region, with an increase in non-point source pollution risk in the human-influenced areas and a rapid expansion of the very high-risk area. However, the non-point source pollution risk in the upstream water source area of the watershed reduced over the study period. In recent years, the rapid urbanization of the Loess Plateau region has been the primary reason for the rapid expansion of the very high PNP risk area throughout the watershed. This study highlights the significant impact of LUCC on the dynamic changes in PNP risk within the Loess Plateau region, providing crucial insights into future conservation and urban planning policies aimed at enhancing the ecological health and environmental quality of the region.

Abstract:Changes in landscape patterns in a river basin play a crucial role in the change on load of non-point source pollution. The spatial distribution of various land use types affects the transmission of non-point source pollutants on the basis of source-sink theory in landscape ecology. Jiulong River basin in southeast of China was selected as the study area in this paper. Aiming to analyze the correlation between changing landscape patterns and load of non-point source pollution in this area, traditional landscape metrics and the improved location-weighted landscape contrast index based on the minimum hydrological response unit (HRULCI) were applied in this study, in combination with remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) technique. The results of the landscape metrics showed the enhanced fragmentation extent and the decreasing polymerization degree of the overall landscape in the watershed. High values of HRULCI were concentrated in cultivated land, while low HRULCI values mostly appeared in forestland, indicating that cultivated land substantially enhanced non-point source pollution, while forestland inhibited the pollution process.

Abstract:In current china, the research on comprehensive control of soil and water losses in small watershed using GIS is an important research direction in which soil erosion prediction provides significant foundation. Based on the softwares of ArcGIS 8.3 and Mapinfo 7.0 and combined with ecological principles, the objectives of this paper were to obtain erosion modulus by field rainfall experiments in various ecological terrain units, and to predict soil loss in the whole small watershed. According to watershed water concentration principle, combinatories principle, and weights analysis of environmental factors, which affect soil erosion of each ecological unit, we constructed the soil erosion prediction model. Then by performing rainfall simulation in Liudaogou small watershed, we simulated the model. The following results were found: (1) Soil water erosion mainly occurs on the wasteland and Sparse Shrub and grassland with the slope of 15 degrees similar to 25 degrees,and is not whole small watershed. On the slope sections of the severest soil water erosion, the soil erosion modulus are over 15000 t/km(2)a. On the others slope sections, the soil erosion modulus are much smaller (2) Under the same situation, the greater rainfall intensity is, the greater erosion modulus is;(3)On sandy slope, once producing runoff, the sediment concentration would be large, and the formation process of gully is vertical seepage-slope undercurrent-landslip.(4) The soil erosion ecological prediction model can reflect the spatial difference of soil water erosion more accurately. And it is more advantageous over RUSLE and WEEP in the Loess plateau with steep slope, small terrain plot and frequent rainstorm
Land suitability assessment on a watershed of Loess Plateau using the analytic hierarchy process

Abstract:In order to reduce soil erosion and desertification, the Sloping Land Conversion Program has been conducted in China for more than 15 years, and large areas of farmland have been converted to forest and grassland. However, this large-scale vegetation-restoration project has faced some key problems (e.g. soil drying) that have limited the successful development of the current ecological-recovery policy. Therefore, it is necessary to know about the land use, vegetation, and soil, and their inter-relationships in order to identify the suitability of vegetation restoration. This study was conducted at the watershed level in the ecologically vulnerable region of the Loess Plateau, to evaluate the land suitability using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The results showed that (1) the area unsuitable for crops accounted for 73.3% of the watershed, and the main factors restricting cropland development were soil physical properties and soil nutrients; (2) the area suitable for grassland was about 86.7% of the watershed, with the remaining 13.3% being unsuitable; (3) an area of 3.95 km(2), accounting for 66.7% of the watershed, was unsuitable for forest. Overall, the grassland was found to be the most suitable land-use to support the aims of the Sloping Land Conversion Program in the Liudaogou watershed. Under the constraints of soil water shortage and nutrient deficits, crops and forests were considered to be inappropriate land uses in the study area, especially on sloping land. When selecting species for re-vegetation, non-native grass species with high water requirements should be avoided so as to guarantee the sustainable development of grassland and effective ecological functioning. Our study provides local land managers and farmers with valuable information about the inappropriateness of growing trees in the study area along with some information on species selection for planting in the semi-arid area of the Loess Plateau.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the relationship between the landscape patterns and non-point source (NPS) pollution distribution in Qixia County, China. The sub-basin classification was conducted based on a digital elevation model and Landsat8 satellite images. Water samples were collected from each sub-basin, andtheir water quality during the wet and dry seasons was estimated. The correlation between the landscape indices and water pollution indicators was determined by Pearson analysis. The location-weighted landscape contrast index (LWLCI) was calculated based on the “source-sink” theory. Qixia was further divided into five sections based on the LWLCI score to illustrate the potential risk of NPS pollution. The results showed that the water quality in Qixia County was generally good. Cultivated land, orchards, construction areas, and unused land were positively correlated with the water pollution index and weredesignated as the “source” landscape categories, while forests, grasslands, and water bodies, which were negatively correlated with water pollution, were the “sink” landscapes; the LWCI was high in 36.94% of the study area. In these areas, measures such as increasing vegetation buffer zones are necessary to decrease the sediment and nutrient loads carried by precipitation.

Abstract:Non-point source (NPS) pollution has become a vital contaminant source affecting the water environment because of its wide distribution, hydrodynamic complexity, and difficulty in prevention and control. In this study, the identification and evaluation of NPS pollution risk based on landscape pattern were carried out in the Hanjiang River basin above Ankang hydrological section, Shaanxi province, China. Landscape distribution information was obtained through land use data, analyzing the contribution of “source-sink” landscape to NPS pollution through the location-weighted landscape contrast index. Using the NPS pollution risk index to identify and evaluate the regional NPS pollution risk considering the slope, cost distance, soil erosion, and precipitation erosion affect migration of pollutants. The results showed that (i) the pollution risk was generally high in the whole watershed, and the sub-watersheds dominated by “source” landscapes account for 74.61% of the whole basin; (ii) the high-risk areas were distributed in the central, eastern, and western regions of the river basin; the extremely high-risk areas accounted for 12.7% of the whole watershed; and the southern and northern regions were dominated by forestland and grassland with little pollution risk; (iii) “source” landscapes were mostly distributed in areas close to the river course, which had a great impact on environment, and the landscape pattern units near the water body needed to be further adjusted to reduce the influence of NPS pollution.

Abstract:On the basis of two Liaoning Province Remote Sensing-based Soil Erosion Survey and National Water Resources Investigation and Assessment, the change process for land use and cover has been analyzed by adopting landscape ecology method under the support of remote sensing and GIS in the middle and lower reaches of Liao River Basin. GIS spatial processing method and hydrological method are adopted to analyze the effect of land use change on water quantity and water quality. The results show that the change of land use in the middle and lower reaches of Liaohe River aggravates the soil erosion and that addes sediment transport content under the condition of same discharge and runoff; the increase on fertilizers and pesticides leads to the augment on nitrogen content; the change of land use and cover in the middle and lower reaches of Liaohe River brings about the change of evaportranspiration under different vegetation types; thus further changes the runoff-producing in the basin.
Multiple Landscape “source–sink” Structures for the Monitoring and Management of Non-Point Source Organic Carbon Loss in a Peri-Urban Watershed

Abstract:We established successfully the Location-weighted landscape Contrast Index (LCI) with three factors of landscape pattern (land-use type, composition and configuration) in the view of the source–sink structures of three organic carbon format loss processes. To reveal the relations between soil organic carbon loss and landscape indicators, we should firstly quantify the variables that denote organic carbon loss status. The sediment delivery distributed model and the Pollution Load (PLOAD) model (R2>0.9; ENS>0.9) were integrated to simulate sediment yield, total organic carbon (TOC) loss, adsorbed organic carbon (AOC), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Results by Pearson correlation analysis indicate that the dominant factor in the integrated model is the rainfall factor explaining >80% of the variations in both sediment and organic carbon loss. Aside from precipitation, landscape pattern is also a principal factor that correlates with sediment yield and organic carbon loss. Landscape indicators, namely, LCITOC and LCIAOC, are significantly related to the sediment delivery ratio, and they explain 87% and 81% of the variation in sediment yield rate, respectively; however, they do not consider precipitation, with the rainfall factor dropped. LCITOC, LCIAOC, and LCIDOC explain 91%, 89%, and 87% of the variation in the corresponding organic carbon formats, respectively. The landscape indicators show that the landscape pattern is generally unfavorable to AOC loss in most sub-watersheds, whereas it is favorable to DOC and TOC format losses in the whole watershed. These differences among loss formats are considerably attributed to different sink–source compositional structures. Flow length derived from the paddies and rural settlements along river networks is the most unfavorable factor related to spatial configuration of organic carbon source–sink. In this regard, this study proposes the further optimization of the landscape pattern to increase or prevent the flow path of soil and organic carbon from source land-use types to river channels. This goal can be achieved through the development of protection forest belts in hilly areas and around agricultural lands.

Abstract:The source and sink landscape patterns refer to landscape types or units that can either promote positive evolvement of non-point source (NPS) pollution process, or can prevent/defer the ecological process, respectively. Therefore, the role of a catchment landscape pattern in nutrient losses can be identified based on the spatial arrangement of source and sink landscapes. To reveal the relations between landscape spatial characteristics and NPS pollution in small catchment, a case study was carried out in a Wangjiagou small catchment of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR), China. Google earth imagery for 2015 were processed and used to differentiate source and sink landscape types, and six subcatchments were selected as sample regions for monitoring nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. Relative elevation, slope gradient and relative flow length was used to construct the Lorenz curves of different source and sink landscape types in the catchment, in order to assess the source and sink landscape spatial characteristics. By calculating the location-weighted landscape indices of each subcatchment and total catchment, the landscape spatial load characteristics affecting the NPS pollution was identified, with a further Pearson correlation analysis for location-weighted landscape indices and nitrogen-phosphorus monitoring indicators. The analysis of Lorenz curve has revealed that the obtained distribution trend of Lorenz curve and curve area quantified well the spatial characteristics of source and sink landscape pattern related to the relative elevation, slope gradient and relative flow length in small catchment. Results of Pearson correction analysis indicated that location-weighted landscape index (LWLI) combining of terrain and landscape type factor did better in reflecting the status of nitrogen and phosphorus loss than the indices related to relative elevation, slope gradient and relative flow length.

Abstract:The Loess Plateau region is characterized by fragmented habitats and ecological vulnerability. Analyzing the changes in land use and ecological risk within the region is of great significance for promoting high-quality development of the Loess Plateau. The study utilized land use data from 2000, 2010, and 2020 in the Loess Plateau region to assess the spatio-temporal variation in land use patterns and landscape ecological risks, aiming to provide valuable references and decision support for ecological risk management and sustainable development in the area. The results indicated that the main land use types in the region are grassland and cropland. From 2000 to 2020, forest, grassland, and water areas increased by 1.39 × 106, 6.25 × 105, and 7.09 × 104 ha, respectively. The impervious area increased rapidly, growing from 9.77 × 104 ha in 2000 to 1.85 × 106 ha in 2020. The cropland decreased by 1.82 × 106 ha from 2000 to 2020, with 4.61 × 105, 4.95 × 106, and 8.91 × 105 ha of cropland converted to forest, grassland, and impervious area, respectively. The fragmentation of the ecological landscape in the region has decreased, and the diversity and richness of landscape types have increased. The fragmentation of cropland, forest, and grassland has decreased, and landscape patches have become more concentrated. High-value areas of landscape ecological risk in the region show a trend of continuous aggregation, altering the dispersion pattern of high-risk areas. Currently, high-risk areas of landscape ecology in the Loess Plateau region are mainly concentrated in northern Shaanxi and some areas along the Yellow River, such as Yulin, Yan’an, Ordos, and others. Currently, the ecological environment remains a bottleneck constraining the high-quality development of the Loess Plateau. It is necessary to persist in coordinated governance and ecological engineering construction, and improving the quality of ecological environment is a prerequisite for consolidating the social foundation and leading the high-quality development of the ecological industry on the Loess Plateau.
