Abstract:We construct a fully faithful functor from the category of graphs to the category of fields. Using this functor, we resolve a longstanding open problem in computable model theory, by showing that for every nontrivial countable structure S, there exists a countable field F with the same essential computable-model-theoretic properties as S. Along the way, we develop a new "computable category theory," and prove that our functor and its partially-defined inverse (restricted to the categories of countable graphs and countable fields) are computable functors.

Abstract:What is computable with limited resources? How can we verify the correctness of computations? How to measure computational power with precision? Despite the immense scientific and engineering progress in computing, we still have only partial answers to these questions. In order to make these problems more precise, we describe an abstract algebraic definition of classical computation, generalizing traditional models to semigroups. The mathematical abstraction also allows the investigation of different computing paradigms (e.g. cellular automata, reversible computing) in the same framework. Here we summarize the main questions and recent results of the research of finite computation.

Abstract:Abstract There are different notions of computation, the most popular being monads, applicative functors, and arrows. In this article, we show that these three notions can be seen as instances of a unifying abstract concept: monoids in monoidal categories. We demonstrate that even when working at this high level of generality, one can obtain useful results. In particular, we give conditions under which one can obtain free monoids and Cayley representations at the level of monoidal categories, and we show that their concretisation results in useful constructions for monads, applicative functors, and arrows. Moreover, by taking advantage of the uniform presentation of the three notions of computation, we introduce a principled approach to the analysis of the relation between them.

Abstract:Indexed monoidal algebras are introduced as an equivalent structure for self-dual compact closed categories, and a coherence theorem is proved for the category of such algebras. Turing automata and Turing graph machines are defined by generalizing the classical Turing machine concept, so that the collection of such machines becomes an indexed monoidal algebra. On the analogy of the von Neumann data-flow computer architecture, Turing graph machines are proposed as potentially reversible low-level universal computational devices, and a truly reversible molecular size hardware model is presented as an example.

Abstract:We assign a relational structure to any finite algebra in a canonical way, using solution sets of equations, and we prove that this relational structure is polymorphism-homogeneous if and only if the algebra itself is polymorphism-homogeneous. We show that polymorphism-homogeneity is also equivalent to the property that algebraic sets (i.e., solution sets of systems of equations) are exactly those sets of tuples that are closed under the centralizer clone of the algebra. Furthermore, we prove that the aforementioned properties hold if and only if the algebra is injective in the category of its finite subpowers. We also consider two additional conditions: a stronger variant for polymorphism-homogeneity and for injectivity, and we describe explicitly the finite semilattices, lattices, Abelian groups and monounary algebras satisfying any one of these three conditions.

Abstract:We give a practical computer algebra implementation of the Covering Lemma for finite transformation semigroups. The lemma states that given a surjective relational morphism $(X,S)\twoheadrightarrow(Y,T)$, we can establish emulation by a cascade product (subsemigroup of the wreath product): $(X,S)\hookrightarrow (Y,T)\wr (Z,U)$. The dependent component $(Z,U)$ contains the kernel of the morphism, the information lost in the map.

Abstract:A model for computation over an arbitrary (ordered) ring R is presented. In this general setting, universal machines, partial recursive functions, and NP-complete problems are obtained. While the theory reflects of classical over Z (e.g. the computable functions are the recursive functions), it also reflects the special mathematical character of the underlying ring R (e.g. complements of Julia sets provide natural examples of recursively enumerable undecidable sets over the reals) and provides a natural setting for studying foundational issues concerning algorithms in numerical analysis.< >

Abstract:We propose an algebraic model of computation which formally relates symbolic listings, complexity of Boolean functions, and low depth arithmetic circuit complexity. In this model algorithms are arithmetic formula expressing symbolic listings of YES instances of Boolean functions, and computation is executed via partial differential operators. We consider the Chow rank of an arithmetic formula as a measure of complexity and establish the Chow rank of multilinear polynomials with totally non-overlapping monomial support. We also provide Chow rank non-decreasing transformations from sets of graphs to sets of functional graphs.

Abstract:The syntactic nature of logic and computation separates them from other fields of mathematics. Nevertheless, syntax has been the only way to adequately capture the dynamics of proofs and programs such as cut-elimination, and the finiteness and the atomicity of syntax are preferable for foundational aims as seen in Hilbert's program. Another issue is that a uniform basis for logic and computation has been missing, and this problem hampers a coherent view on them. For instance, formal proofs in proof theory are far from (ordinary) proofs of the validity of a formula in model theory. Our goal is to solve these fundamental problems by rebuilding central concepts in logic and computation such as formal systems, validity (in such a way that it coincides with the existence of proofs), cut-elimination and computability uniformly in terms of finite graphs based on game semantics. Unlike game semantics, however, we do not rely on anything infinite or extrinsic to the graphs. A key idea that enables our finitary, autonomous approach is the shift from graphs in game semantics to dynamic ones. The resulting combinatorics establishes a single, syntax-free, finitary framework that recasts formal systems admitting proofs with cuts, validity, the finest computational steps of cut-elimination and higher-order computability. This subsumes fully complete semantics of intuitionistic linear logic, which solves a problem open for thirty years, and even extends the full completeness to proofs with cuts. As a byproduct, our dynamic graphs give rise to Hopf algebras, which opens up new applications of algebras to logic and computation.

Abstract:We treat the canonical commutation relations and the conventional calculus based on it as an algebraic syntax of quantum mechanics and establish a geometric semantics of this syntax. This leads us to a geometric model, the space of states with the action of time evolution operators, which is a limit of finite models. The finitary nature of the space allows to give a precise meaning and calculate various classical quantum mechanical quantities.

Abstract:We show that for each algebraic space that is separated and of finite type over a field, and whose affinization is connected and reduced, there is a universal morphism to a para-abelian variety. The latter are schemes that acquire the structure of an abelian variety after some ground field extension. This generalizes classical results of Serre on universal morphisms from algebraic varieties to abelian varieties. Our proof relies on corresponding facts for the proper case, together with the structural properties of group schemes, removal of singularities by alterations, and ind-objects. It turns out that the formation of the Albanese variety commutes with base-change up to universal homeomorphisms. We also give a detailed analysis of Albanese maps for algebraic curves and algebraic groups, with special emphasis on imperfect ground fields.

Abstract:The universal Drinfeld-Yetter algebra is an associative algebra whose co-Hochschild cohomology controls the existence of quantization functors of Lie bialgebras, such as the renowned one due to Etingof and Kazhdan. It was initially introduced by Enriquez and later re-interpreted by Appel and Toledano Laredo as an algebra of endomorphisms in the colored PROP of a Drinfeld-Yetter module over a Lie bialgebra. In this paper, we provide an explicit formula for its structure constants in terms of certain diagrams, which we term Drinfeld-Yetter looms.

Abstract:Let $KQ$ be a path algebra, where $Q$ is a finite quiver and $K$ is a field. We study $KQ/C$ where $C$ is the two-sided ideal in $KQ$ generated by all differences of parallel paths in $Q$. We show that $KQ/C$ is always finite dimensional and its global dimension is finite. Furthermore, we prove that $KQ/C$ is Morita equivalent to an incidence algebra. The paper starts with the more general setting, where $KQ$ is replaced by $KQ/I$ with $I$ a two-sided ideal in $KQ$.

Revisiting Algebra and Complexity of Inference in Graphical Models

Abstract:This paper studies the form and complexity of inference in graphical models using the abstraction offered by algebraic structures. In particular, we broadly formalize inference problems in graphical models by viewing them as a sequence of operations based on commutative semigroups. We then study the computational complexity of inference by organizing various problems into an "inference hierarchy". When the underlying structure of an inference problem is a commutative semiring -- i.e. a combination of two commutative semigroups with the distributive law -- a message passing procedure called belief propagation can leverage this distributive law to perform polynomial-time inference for certain problems. After establishing the NP-hardness of inference in any commutative semiring, we investigate the relation between algebraic properties in this setting and further show that polynomial-time inference using distributive law does not (trivially) extend to inference problems that are expressed using more than two commutative semigroups. We then extend the algebraic treatment of message passing procedures to survey propagation, providing a novel perspective using a combination of two commutative semirings. This formulation generalizes the application of survey propagation to new settings.

Abstract:The semantic view of computation asserts that semantic properties are an essential aspect of the nature of physical computing systems. This chapter starts with an explication of the semantic view of computation: its claims, its variants, how it differs from its non-semantic counterparts, what semantics means in computational contexts, and the major arguments in its favor. Next, the chapter addresses some of the main objections to the semantic view, advanced by Frances Egan, Gualtiero Piccinini, Michael Rescorla, and others. It argues that when more refined distinctions are made, the semantic view can overcome these objections.

Abstract:The works of R. Descartes, I. M. Gelfand and A. Grothendieck have convinced us that commutative rings should be thought of as rings of functions on some appropriate (commutative) spaces. If we try to push this notion forward we reach the realm of Non-commutative Geometry. The confluence of ideas comes here mainly from three seemingly disparate sources, namely, quantum physics, operator algebras (Connes-style) and algebraic geometry. Following the title of the article, an effort has been made to provide an overview of the third point of view. Since na\" ive efforts to generalize commutative algebraic geometry fail, one goes to the root of the problem and tries to work things out "categorically". This makes the approach a little bit abstract but not abstruse. However, an honest confession must be made at the outset - this write-up is very far from being definitive; hopefully it will provide glimpses of some interesting developments at least.

Abstract:In universal algebraic geometry, an algebra is called an equational domain if the union of two algebraic sets is algebraic. We characterize equational domains, with respect to polynomial equations, inside congruence permutable varieties, and with respect to term equations, among all algebras of size two and all algebras of size three with a cyclic automorphism. Furthermore, for each size at least three, we prove that, modulo term equivalence, there is a continuum of equational domains of that size.
