Abstract:During phase transitions certain properties of a material change, such as composition field and lattice-symmetry distortions. These changes are typically coupled, and affect the microstructures that form in materials. Here, we propose a 2D theoretical framework that couples a Cahn-Hilliard (CH) model describing the composition field of a material system, with a phase field crystal (PFC) model describing its underlying microscopic configurations. We couple the two continuum models via coordinate transformation coefficients. We introduce the transformation coefficients in the PFC method, to describe affine lattice deformations. These transformation coefficients are modeled as functions of the composition field. Using this coupled approach, we explore the effects of coarse-grained lattice symmetry and distortions on a phase transition process. In this paper, we demonstrate the working of the CH-PFC model through three representative examples: First, we describe base cases with hexagonal and square lattice symmetries for two composition fields. Next, we illustrate how the CH-PFC method interpolates lattice symmetry across a diffuse composition phase boundary. Finally, we compute a Cahn-Hilliard type of diffusion and model the accompanying changes to lattice symmetry during a phase transition process.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to describe and simulate the coupling effect between the composition field and lattice symmetry during the material phase - transition process. Specifically, the paper proposes a method that combines the Cahn - Hilliard (CH) model and the phase - field crystal (PFC) model to describe the microstructure evolution of binary alloys during the phase - transition process. By introducing coordinate transformation coefficients, which are functions of the composition field, the paper explores the influence of coarse - grained lattice symmetry and distortion on the phase - transition process. ### Main problems 1. **Coupling the composition field and lattice symmetry** - The paper proposes a two - dimensional theoretical framework that combines the Cahn - Hilliard model, which describes the composition field, with the phase - field crystal model, which describes the microscopic configuration of the lattice. - The two continuous models are coupled through coordinate transformation coefficients, which describe affine lattice deformation and are functions of the composition field. 2. **Changes in lattice symmetry during the phase - transition process** - The influence of coarse - grained lattice symmetry and distortion on the phase - transition process is studied. - The working principle of the CH - PFC model is demonstrated through three representative examples: - Basic case: Describe two composition fields with hexagonal and tetragonal lattice symmetries. - Interpolating lattice symmetry: Show how the CH - PFC method interpolates lattice symmetry on the phase interface of the diffusive composition. - Diffusion process: Calculate the Cahn - Hilliard - type diffusion and simulate the accompanying changes in lattice symmetry. ### Formulas and models - **Total free - energy functional** \[ F=\int\left[g(c)+\kappa|\nabla c|^{2}+f(\phi)+\phi^{2}G(\nabla_{c}^{2})\phi\right]d\vec{r} \] where: - \(g(c)\) and \(f(\phi)\) respectively describe the uniform energy contributions of the Cahn - Hilliard and PFC equations. - \(\kappa\) is the composition gradient energy coefficient. - \(G(\nabla_{c}^{2})\) controls the coarse - grained lattice symmetry described by the particle density field. - **Normalized free - energy functional** \[ F = \frac{F}{F_{0}}=\int\left[c^{2}(c - 1)^{2}+|\nabla c|^{2}+\gamma\left(\psi^{2}(r+(1+\nabla_{c}^{2})^{2})\psi+\frac{\psi^{4}}{4}\right)\right]d\vec{x} \] - **Composition - dependent Laplacian operator** \[ \nabla_{c}^{2}=(A_{1,1}^{2}+A_{1,2}^{2})\frac{\partial^{2}}{\partial x^{2}}+A_{2,2}^{2}\frac{\partial^{2}}{\partial y^{2}}+2A_{1,2}A_{2,2}\frac{\partial^{2}}{\partial x\partial y} \] where \(A_{k, l}\) are coordinate transformation coefficients and are functions of the dimensionless composition field \(c\). ### Conclusion By combining the Cahn - Hilliard model and the phase - field crystal model, the paper successfully describes the changes and distortions in lattice symmetry during the phase - transition process of binary alloys. This method provides a new perspective for understanding the microstructure evolution during the material phase - transition process.
