Abstract:In this work, the Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite, a high efficient TiO2-based photocatalyst, was synthesized by ultrasonic dispersion and liquid boil methods. Among which, the Er3+:YAlO3 is a kind of upconversion luminescence agent, which was prepared by nitrate-citric acid method. It can emit ultraviolet light under visible light excitation. The Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction and UV-vis spectral techniques. The degradation of Acid Red B dye was used to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite under solar light irradiation. It was found that the photocatalytic activity of Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite was much higher than that for the similar system with only Fe-doped TiO2. And the influencing factors, such as Er3+:YAlO3 content, irradiation time, initial concentration of Acid Red B, addition amount of Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 and NaCl, on the photocatalytic degradation were also investigated. The Er3+:YAlO3 as upconversion luminescence agent can elevate the photocatalytic activity of Fe-doped TiO2 powder. Moreover, the Fe2+ ion can restrain the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Thus, this Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite is a useful material for the detoxification of wastewater because it can efficiently utilize solar light by converting visible light into ultraviolet light.
Optimization of CuAl2O4 Nanoparticles for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes Under UV and Visible Light

Abstract:Organic dyes, due to their persistence and toxicity, represent a significant environmental challenge. This study focuses on the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes using CuAl 2 O 4 nanoparticles, synthesized through the co-precipitation method, under visible light irradiation. The synthesized nanoparticles were thoroughly characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) to determine their chemical, structural, and crystalline properties. The optical properties of the nanoparticles, particularly their ability to absorb light, were also investigated, highlighting their importance in enhancing photocatalytic performance. Methyl Violet dye was selected as a model pollutant to assess the photocatalytic efficiency of these nanoparticles. The results showed that the CuAl 2 O 4 nanoparticles degraded about 72.49% of Methyl Violet in 120 min under UV and visible light, with the high efficiency attributed to the generation of electron-hole pairs and reactive oxygen species, including superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals. These active agents are critical in the degradation process. The findings demonstrate the potential of CuAl 2 O 4 nanoparticles as nontoxic and highly effective photocatalysts for environmental remediation, offering a promising solution for treating wastewater contaminated with hazardous organic dyes. This study enhances the understanding of the photocatalytic behavior of CuAl 2 O 4 nanoparticles and emphasizes their potential in reducing environmental pollution through efficient degradation of harmful compounds.

Abstract:Amongst the environmental issues throughout the world, organic synthetic dyes continue to be one of the most important subjects in wastewater remediation. In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of the dimethylmethane fluorescent dye, Auramine O (AO), was investigated in a heterogeneous aqueous solution with 100 nm anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) under 365 nm light irradiation. The effect of irradiation time was systematically studied, and photolysis and adsorption of AO on TiO2 NPs were also evaluated using the same experimental conditions. The kinetics of AO photocatalytic degradation were pseudo-first order, according to the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, with a rate constant of 0.048 ± 0.002 min‒1. A maximum photocatalytic efficiency, as high as 96.2 ± 0.9%, was achieved from a colloidal mixture of 20 mL (17.78 μmol L‒3) AO solution in the presence of 5 mg of TiO2 NPs. The efficiency of AO photocatalysis decreased nonlinearly with the initial concentration and catalyst dosage. Based on the effect of temperature, the activation energy of AO photocatalytic degradation was estimated to be 4.63 kJ mol−1. The effect of pH, additional scavengers, and H2O2 on the photocatalytic degradation of AO was assessed. No photocatalytic degradation products of AO were observed using UV–visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, confirming that the final products are volatile small molecules.

Abstract:Amorphous TiO2 (Am-TiO2) was prepared at room temperature by hydrolysis of Ti(OBu)4 in water without addition of strong acids or organic solvents. Results from XRD and TEM revealed that the as-prepared Am-TiO2 was composed of amorphous structure. For the simultaneous photosensitized removal of Cr(VI) and zwitterionic Rhodamine B (RhB) dye, Am-TiO2 exhibited more significant synergistic effect than commercial P25-TiO2. The removal efficiencies for RhB and Cr(VI) after 100min visible light irradiation were 97.8% and 53.5% on Am-TiO2, respectively. While 88.2% RhB and 42.1% Cr(VI) were removed on P25-TiO2. Decreased synergistic activities as well as smaller surface areas were observed when Am-TiO2 was pretreated at high temperatures (200–700°C). Thus, it was the larger specific surface area rather than better crystallinity dominated the synergistic degradation dynamics under visible light irradiation with lower pH (2), greater catalyst loading amount (2g/L), proper RhB/Cr(VI) ratios (1:8) and higher light intensity (500W). Better synergistic performance was also obtained on Am-TiO2 than P25-TiO2 when Cr(VI) coexists with cationic dyes, while negligible difference was observed in the presence of anionic dyes. Superior stability and simplicity of Am-TiO2 was also exhibited in the cyclic runs.

Abstract:To use solar irradiation or interior lighting efficiently, a new photocatalyst with high catalytic activity in visible light was sought. In this work, an upconversion luminescence agent, 40 CdF2·60 BaF2·1.0 Er2O3, was synthesized and its fluorescent spectrum was determined. It is found that this upconversion luminescence agent can emit five upconversion fluorescent peaks below 387nm under the excitation of 488nm visible light. The upconversion luminescence agent has revealed an improvement over ordinary titanium dioxide (TiO2) in photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation for the photocatalytic degradation of ethyl violet in aqueous solution as a model compound. The TiO2 photocatalyst doped with upconversion luminescence agent was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The photocatalytic degradation of ethyl violet was tracked by UV–vis and 1H-NMR spectra, and the influences of irradiation time, initial concentration of ethyl violet, addition amount of TiO2 catalyst and initial pH value were also investigated. To affirm the complete mineralization, the total organic carbon (TOC) was also tested. The degradation rate of ethyl violet in the presence of doped rutile TiO2 photocatalyst reached 87.08% at 4.0h visible light irradiation, which was obviously higher than the corresponding degradation rate (35.42%) in the presence of undoped rutile TiO2 powder. The research results show that the upconversion luminescence agent is necessary to transform visible lights into ultraviolet lights and thus make the best use of visible lights. By calculation, the upconversion efficiency of the emission peak at 380nm was estimated to be about 0.78%. The TiO2 powder doped upconversion luminescence agent under visible light irradiation is able to decompose the ethyl violet in aqueous solution efficiently, therefore, this method may be envisaged as a technology for treating dyes wastewaters using solar energy, especially at textile industries in developing countries.
Sensitization Of Tio2 With Aluminum Phthalocyanine: Factors Influencing The Efficiency For Chlorophenol Degradation In Water Under Visible Light

Abstract:Aluminum tetracarboxyphthalocyanine adsorbed on TiO2 has been examined as a sensitizer for degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in water under visible light irradiation (lambda >= 450 nm). It was observed that 4-CP was mostly decomposed into CO2 and chloride ions, whereas the reaction rate was greatly influenced by several parameters. The optimum loading of the dye on TiO2 was about 1.0 wt %, nearly independent of TiO2 used. The solution pH which favored 4-CP degradation over the dye loaded TiO2 was about pH 7. An increase in 4-CP concentration below 0.27 mM resulted in increased rate of 4-CP dearadation, the kinetics well fitted into the Langmuir-Hnshelwood equation. In the flow of N-2, the reaction was almost completely inhibited. Experiments through EPR spin trapping, methanol quenching, and silver ions as electron acceptors revealed the involvement of superoxide, hydroxyl and dye cation radicals in the dye sensitized reaction. Evidence is well interpreted in terms of the electron transfer from the excited dye to TiO2, followed by generation of the reactive species. However, among different sensitizers, the observed difference in activity is hardly correlated with their differences in the particle size, Surface area, crystalline structure, and crystallinity of bare TiO2, and in the dye absorbance and aggregation as well, whereas it is well in accordance with the trend in pore volume, measured for these samples through O-2 adsorption-desorption at 77 K. The result demonstrates for the first time the predominant role of O-2 to the dye sensitized degradation of organic pollutants over TiO2 in aqueous suspension. Furthermore, the dye loaded TiO2 under visible light was also active for degradation of other aromatic pollutants such as sulfosalicylic acid, from which the dye cation radical with a redox potential of about 1.25 V vs NHE at pH 6.5 is inferred.
Photocatalytic degradation of Remazol Red B and Rhodamine B dyes using TiO2 nanomaterial: estimation of the effective operating parameters

Abstract:The presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including dyes in the aquatic ecosystem is of major concern worldwide because of their hazardous effect, and human and environmental risks. The degradation of conventional wastewater plants costs a lot, due to increased environmental restrictions. Using photocatalysis to remove (POPs) is a promising, effective and sustainable process. A simple one-step sol–gel procedure for degradation of Remazol Red B (RRB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) has been used to synthesize titanium dioxide photocatalyst. Various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and parameters that influence the photodegradation process, including catalyst dose, pH, initial dye concentration, were used to study TiO2 photoactivity. The degradation of TiO2 via UV radiation for RRB and RhB after 75 min was 99.7% and 99.8% respectively. The photodegradation rates for two dyes using a Langmuir–Hinshelwood are shown pseudo-first-order. Besides, reactive species scavengers have been studied during degradation and the major species is OH• radicals. Photoluminescence experiments using terephthalic acid as a reference molecule determined OH• free radical formation during irradiation.

A comparison between the Metric Dimension and Zero Forcing Number of Line Graphs

Abstract:The metric dimension dim(G) of a graph G is the minimum number of vertices such that every vertex of G is uniquely determined by its vector of distances to the chosen vertices. The zero forcing number Z(G) of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a set S of black vertices (whereas vertices in V (G)\S are colored white) such that V (G) is converted entirely to black after finitely many applications of “the color-change rule”: a white vertex is converted black if it is the only white neighbor of a black vertex. Zero forcing number was introduced and used to bound the minimum rank of graphs by the “AIM Minimum Rank – Special Graphs Work Group”. We investigate the metric dimension and the zero forcing number of line graphs. First, we determine the metric dimension of the line graphs of wheel graphs and bouquet of circles. Second, we determine the zero forcing number of the line graphs of complete graphs, wheel graphs, and bouquet of circles. We prove that Z(G) ≤ 2Z(L(G)) for a simple and connected graph G. Further, we show that Z(G) ≤ Z(L(G)) when G is a tree or when G contains a Hamiltonian path and has a certain number of edges. Finally, we compare the metric dimension with the zero forcing number of a line graph by demonstrating a couple of inequalities between the two parameters. We conclude with some open problems.

Abstract:Light absorption range, recycling stability and charge transfer efficiency are key to the performance of photocatalytic material. Based on these targets, a Al doped TiO 2 catalyst was synthesized by the evaporation-induced process, after processed by NaBH 4 reduction, the black TiO 2 doped with Al was finally prepared. Uv-vis DRS, EPR and XPS analyses confirm the expanded light absorption window (300 nm - 1000 nm) and the introduction of abundant oxygen vacancy after the reduction process. The final product BTiO 2 /Al-0.5 has a degradation rate of about 84 % over the tetracycline hydrochloride within 60 minutes, the reaction rate constant (k) is 10.6 times higher than the unreduced sample. The dramatic change of photocatalytic ability can be assigned to the broadened visible light absorption, increased charge separation efficiency, narrowed band gap and defect-enriched oxygen vacancy. This work offers insights into the fabrication of TiO 2 catalyst and the introduction of oxygen defect.

Abstract:Herein, a preparation of a mixed-phase titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin layer on glass beads was developed using the modified spray method. This approach was determined to be affordable and easy to operate. Optimum conditions were investigated for the photodegradation of wastewater generated from textile dyeing by TiO2-coated glass beads as a catalyst using the central composite design (CCD). An increase in the direct dye photodegradation rate was observed at lower direct dye concentrations when TiO2 dosages were increased, and the initial pH value was decreased. The optimal conditions involving TiO2 dosage, pH, UV intensity, and dye concentrations were 3 g/L, 5.0, 3000 μW/cm2, and 50 mg/L, respectively, when administered at ambient temperatures. For the batch experiments, the direct dye removal efficiency at 93.7% was achieved within 24 h. The average direct dye removal efficiency was 67.8% and could be up to 80.2% when using a fixed-bed photocatalysis reactor during 30 d of continuous operation. The reused catalyst's degradation efficiency was not significantly changed, indicating its capability for repeated reuse and the excellent stability of immobilized TiO2 onto the glass beads. This study additionally found that high temperatures could increase the efficiency of color removal.

Enhanced Photodegradation of Organic Dyes Using Copper and Zinc Aluminate Nanophotocatalysts

Abstract:This study aims to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of Cu x Zn 1-x Al 2 O 4 (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8) nanophotocatalysts synthesized via a sol-gel self-combustion method. Rietveld analysis confirmed the formation of single-phase spinels with a face-centered cubic structure and Fd-3m space group symmetry, while electron density distribution analysis supported the ionic character of bonding within the material. Subsequent UV-visible spectroscopy revealed that the addition of Cu(II) reduced the band gap from 4.66 eV to 2.54 eV, facilitating enhanced light absorption. Consequently, the catalyst with x = 0.8 deteriorated 95% of methyl orange (MO) and 93% of rhodamine-B (RhB) in 120 minutes of visible light irradiation, following a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The Cu 0.8 Zn 0.2 Al 2 O 4 sample demonstrated significant reusability and stability, with degradation rates of 93-79% for RhB and 95-81% for MO after four cycles. Scavenging studies indicated that photoexcited holes (h), hydroxyl radicals (OH•), and superoxide radicals (O2•−) were key factors in the degradation process. This study presents an improved approach for enhancing the photodegradation performance of the Cu 0.8 Zn 0.2 Al 2 O 4 catalyst for pharmaceutical and wastewater treatment applications.

Photo-Catalytic Activity And Life Time Of The Tio2 Nano-Particles

Abstract:Titanium dioxide nano-particles (for example, P-25, Germany, Degussa) have been internationally used as an effective photo-catalyst for many years. In this paper, characterization of P-25, photo-degradation ability as well as its life time has been systematically studied by employing methyl orange as a model pollutant. Many factors such as the pH value, pre-treatment have been investigated. Just like other nanometer-sized or ordinary Anatase TiO2, the catalyst performs better at an optimal pH value. Pre-treatment of the catalyst also enhances the photo-catalytic ability. And the P-25 have shown rather good life time. The degradation products have been characterized by UV, mass and Raman spectrum. It is found that although the P-25 photo-catalyst has shown excellent decolourization ability, it is still difficult to degrade the methyl orange into small molecule, such as CO2 and H2O. Low-power ultraviolet lamps (9W, 254nm) have been used throughout. A comparison experiment has been carried out under natural sunlight, and the results have shown that natural sunlight (With temperature below 10degreesC) could provide even more energy than that of the adopted ultraviolet lamp, which have proved P-25 a rather promising photo-catalyst for practical application in environment field under natural surrounding. The obtained results may serve as a valuable reference for the evaluation and preparation of high quality TiO2 photo-catalyst.
Photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds: accelerating the process efficiency

Abstract:The photocatalytic activites of several TiO2 materials have been compared studying the degradation of an aliphatic and an aromatic model compound under optimized experimental conditions (e.g., c(TiO2), pH of the solution). For dichloroacetic acid (DCA) a new anatase catalyst, i.e., Hombikat UV100, yielded significantly higher photonic efficiencies (ζ=15%) than almost all the other materials, especially in comparison to rutiles. For 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) the discrepancies were relatively small and the degradation was generally slower (ζ<1%); in this case the formation of intermediates has to be considered, too. While for DCA the addition of CuNO3 (1–10mM) or a platinization of the catalyst lead to a significant raise in ζ, this had almost no effect on the degradation of 4-CP. For this model compound ζ could be accelerated strongly by the addition of bromate (3mM KBrO3); the photocatalytic nature of the process could be demonstrated. The addition of other oxidants had no beneficial effect, in some cases an inhibition was observed. The stability and long time activity of standard and platinized TiO2 materials could be demonstrated.

Abstract:Water decontamination still remains a major challenge to some developing countries not having centralized wastewater systems. Therefore, this study presents the optimization of photocatalytic degradation of Basic Blue 41 dye in an aqueous medium by an activated carbon (AC)-TiO2 photocatalyst under UV irradiation. The mesoporous AC-TiO2 synthesized by a sonication method was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for crystal phase identification and molecular bond structures, respectively. The efficiency of the AC-TiO2 was evaluated as a function of three input variables viz. catalyst load (2–4 g), reaction time (15–45 min) and pH (6–9) by using Box-Behnken design (BBD) adapted from response surface methodology. Using color and turbidity removal as responses, a 17 run experiment matrix was generated by the BBD to investigate the interaction effects of the three aforementioned input factors. From the results, a reduced quadratic model was generated, which showed good predictability of results agreeable to the experimental data. The analysis of variance (ANOVA), signposted the selected models for color and turbidity, was highly significant (p < 0.05) with coefficients of determination (R2) values of 0.972 and 0.988, respectively. The catalyst load was found as the most significant factor with a high antagonistic impact on the process, whereas the interactive effect of reaction time and pH affected the process positively. At optimal conditions of catalyst load (2.6 g), reaction time (45 min), and pH (6); the desirability of 96% was obtained by a numerical optimization approach representing turbidity removal of 93% and color of 96%.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Dye Acid Orange Seven on Titanium Dioxide Photocatalysts Immobilized on Stainless Steel Coated Layers: Role of Catalyst Loading and Ultrasonic Treatment

Abstract:Supported titanium dioxide (TiO2) was investigated for potential application in photocatalytic degradation of dye acid Orange 7 in textile wastewater. Two commercial powder photocatalysts, Degussa (P25) and Precheza (AV01), were immobilized on stainless steel plates of dimensions (75 mm × 25 mm) through Electrophoretic Deposition Process (EPD) from aqueous colloidal suspensions of n-TiO2, c=10 g.L-1 produced in methanol. Two sets of coated layers were prepared - using ultrasonically treated TiO2 colloidal suspensions and without ultrasonic treatment. The prepared coated layers were fitted onto a four-hole photocatalytic reactor operating under batch-mode conditions. As a source of UV light, Sylvania LynxS, 11W UV lamps emitting light of wavelength between 320-400 nm with maximum wavelength at λ=355 nm was used. The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic treatment on the catalyst’s colloidal suspension and electrophoretic deposition loading (mg/cm2) on its surface area on the resultant photocatalytic degradation of dye Acid Orange 7. The photocatalytic degradation of the dye was monitored by changes in dye absorbance for 120 minutes at an interval of 30 minutes. Changes in dye concentration were determined by ultraviolet spectrophotometry at λ = 485 nm. The initial concentration of dye Acid Orange 7 used in the experiments was c=1×10-4 mol. L-1. The findings show that 61.1 % of dye mineralization was achieved after 120 minutes of photocatalytic degradation. The optimum catalytic loading for maximum photocatalytic degradation was determined at 0.75 mg/cm2 for the two commercial powder catalysts - TiO2 (P25/AV01) in ultrasonically treated TiO2 (P25) and non-ultrasonically treated TiO2 (AV01). Ultrasonic treatment of TiO2 (P25) colloidal suspensions before immobilisation positively influenced its photocatalytic activity, whereas ultrasonic treatment negatively affected the photoactivity of TiO2 (AV01). Overall, TiO2 (AV01) proved to be more efficient by 28.6%, compared to TiO2 (P25). The results show the potential application of UV-TiO2 treatment model in the remediation of coloured dye Acid Orange textile wastewater.
Novel axial substituted subphthalocyanine sensitized titanium dioxide H 12 SubPcB‐OPh 2 OH/TiO 2 photocatalyst: Synthesis, density functional theory calculation, and photocatalytic properties

Abstract:Utilizing subphthalocyanine (SubPc) and 4,4′‐dihydroxybiphenyl (C12H10O2) as the raw materials, an innovative axial substituted SubPc H12SubPcB‐OPh2OH was synthesized by solvothermal method. The density functional theory (DFT) and time‐dependent density functional theory (TD‐DFT) calculations were employed to further study the properties and structures of H12SubPcB‐OPh2OH. To expand photocatalytic activities for organic dyes degradation, H12SubPcB‐OPh2OH was decorated onto surface of TiO2 nanoparticles to fabricate high‐efficiency H12SubPcB‐OPh2OH/TiO2 photosensitive catalysts. The degradation experiments indicated that the H12SubPcB‐OPh2OH/TiO2 catalyst with the mass ratio of 1:25 had the greatest performance in the elimination of methyl orange (MO), bromophenol blue (BB), methylene blue (MB), and acid fuchsin (AF). The 29.4%, 72.5%, 27.6%, and 64.8% of MO, BB, MB, and AF was removed by pure TiO2 in 180‐min, respectively. Under the same conditions, the photocatalytic rate of H12SubPcB‐OPh2OH/TiO2 can reach 96.3%, 99.5%, 97.5%, and 99.5%, separately. The efficiency of the as‐synthesized composite was 3.3, 1.4, 3.5, and 1.5 times higher than that over bare TiO2 for MO, BB, MB, and AF degradation under visible‐light irradiation, respectively. Besides, after five cycles of experiments, the degradation rate of H12SubPcB‐OPh2OH/TiO2 photocatalyst to BB can still reach 90.2%, which demonstrated that the obtained photocatalysts possessed remarkable stability and is much higher than 15.6% of pure TiO2. This study provides a new idea to the construction of photosensitive catalysts based on TiO2 for water purification.

Efficient photocatalysis of Cu doped TiO2/g-C3N4 for the photodegradation of methylene blue

Abstract:The release of dyes into normal water reservoirs has become a tremendous environmental problem and the development of methods to remove such dyes is essential. A novel photocatalyst was fabricated in which Cu doped to TiO2 was coupled with g-C3N4 (Cu-TiO2/g-C3N4) in different weight percentages as 10, 30 and 50%, hydrothermally. Pure TiO2 consisted of both Anatase and Rutile phases where slight lattice distortions were observed in the Cu-doped TiO2 as evidenced by the XRD and Raman analysis. Cu was present at 1.7% by weight respective to TiO2 according to the XRF analysis. Spherical and irregularly shaped aggregated Cu-doped TiO2 nanoparticles in the range of 15–55 nm were heterogeneously distributed on the g-C3N4 matrix as observed by TEM and SEM. The band gap of TiO2 (3.0 eV) was reduced to 2.67 upon doping with Cu. The band gap of g-C3N4 was found to be 2.81 eV and that of Cu-TiO2/g-C3N4 in different weight percentages were in the range of 2.82 to 2.88 eV. Synthesized photocatalysts were tested on the ability to degrade methylene blue under UV and Visible light. Cu-TiO2/50% g-C3N4 showed the highest rate constant (4.4 × 10-3 min−1) which is 5 and 9.8 times greater than TiO2 and g-C3N4, respectively. The rate constant decreased with the introduction of EDTA and Isopropyl alcohol as they scavenge holes and hydroxyl radicals, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of all the nanomaterials increased with the increasing concentration of persulfate due to the increasing concentration of SO4●- and OH● produced. Synthesized nanomaterials effectively adsorb methylene blue under dark conditions following the pseudo-second-order kinetics suggesting that methylene blue molecules were chemisorbed to the adsorbents. The adsorption rate constant resulting in the best-performing photocatalyst was 0.122 g mg−1 min−1. Hence, it is evident that Cu-TiO2/g-C3N4 can effectively degrade methylene blue.

Degradation of the antibiotic oxolinic acid by photocatalysis with TiO2 in suspension

Abstract:In the work presented here, a photocatalytic system using titanium Degussa P-25 in suspension was used to evaluate the degradation of 20mg L(-1) of antibiotic oxolinic acid (OA). The effects of catalyst load (0.2-1.5 g L(-1)) and pH (7.5-11) were evaluated and optimized using the surface response methodology and the Pareto diagram. In the range of variables studied, low pH values and 1.0 g L(-1) of TiO(2) favoured the efficiency of the process. Under optimal conditions the evolution of the substrate, chemical oxygen demand, dissolved organic carbon, toxicity and antimicrobial activity on Escherichia coli cultures were evaluated. The results indicate that, under optimal conditions, after 30 min, the TiO(2) photocatalytic system is able to eliminate both the substrate and the antimicrobial activity, and to reduce the toxicity of the solution by 60%. However, at the same time, ∼53% of both initial DOC and COD remain in solution. Thus, the photocatalytical system is able to transform the target compound into more oxidized by-products without antimicrobial activity and with a low toxicity. The study of OA by-products using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, as well as the evaluation of OA degradation in acetonitrile media as solvent or in the presence of isopropanol and iodide suggest that the reaction is initiated by the photo-Kolbe reaction. Adsorption isotherm experiments in the dark indicated that under pH 7.5, adsorption corresponded to the Langmuir adsorption model, indicating the dependence of the reaction on an initial adsorption step.
