Abstract:The use of quadratic residues to construct matrices with specific determinant values is a familiar problem with connections to many areas of mathematics and statistics. Our research has focused on using cubic residues to construct matrices with interesting and predictable determinants.

Abstract:A matrix over ring with identity has the consecutive-column (CC) property if for all k, all its relevant submatrices having k consecutive rows and the first k columns are invertible. Similarly, the consecutive-row (CR) is defined. In this paper, we show that a arbitrary m x n matrix has both CC and CR properties if and only if it admits a certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This factorization is unique. We also show that there is a mutual 1 - 1 relations between the matrices having CC and CR properties and this certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This bidiagonal factorization has important applications in computer aided geometry design, electrical network and many other fields.

Abstract:Based on geometric intuition, in this paper we are trying to give an idea and visualize the meaning of the determinants for the cubic-matrix. In this paper we have analyzed the possibilities of developing the concept of determinant of matrices with three indexed 3D Matrices. We define the concept of determinant for cubic-matrix of order 2 and order 3, study and prove some basic properties for calculations of determinants of cubic-matrix of order 2 and 3. Furthermore we have also tested several square determinant properties and noted that these properties also are applicable on this concept of 3D Determinants.

Abstract:In 2020, Cossu and Zanardo raised a conjecture on the idempotent factorization on singular matrices in the form $\begin{pmatrix} p&z\\ \bar{z}&\sfrac{\lVert z\rVert}{p} \end{pmatrix},$ where $p$ is a prime integer which is irreducible but not prime element in the ring of integers $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{D}]$ and $z\in\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{D}]$ such that $\langle p,z\rangle$ is a non-principal ideal. In this paper, we provide some classes of matrices that affirm the conjecture and some classes of matrices that oppose the conjecture. We further show that there are matrices in the above form that can not be written as a product of two idempotent matrices.

Abstract:We prove that every real nonnegative ternary quartic whose complex zero set is smooth can be represented as the determinant of a symmetric matrix with quadratic entries which is everywhere positive semidefinite. We show that the corresponding statement fails for the Robinson polynomial, answering a question by Buckley and Šivic.

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Abstract:The solvability of the cubic congruence $x^{3}\equiv 2\pmod{p}$ is referred to as the $\textit{cubic character of 2}$. In evaluating the cubic character of 2, we introduce the Eisenstein integers, Gauss and Jacobi sums, and the law of cubic reciprocity. We motivate this proof by giving ample historical information surrounding the early development of higher reciprocity laws as well as the Gauss' proof of the solvability of the quadratic congruence $x^{2}\equiv 2\pmod{p}$; conventionally the $\textit{quadratic character of 2}$. We simultaneously outline other relevant contributions by Fermat, Euler, Legendre, Jacobi, and Eisenstein.

Abstract:In this paper we evaluate several determinants involving quadratic residues modulo primes. For example, for any prime $p>3$ with $p\equiv3\pmod4$ and $a,b\in\mathbb Z$ with $p\nmid ab$, we prove that $$\det\left[ 1+\tan\pi\frac{aj^2+bk^2}p \right]_{1\le j,k \le \frac{p-1}2} = \begin{cases}-2^{(p-1)/2}p^{(p-3)/4}&\text{if}\ (\frac{ab}p)=1, \\p^{(p-3)/4}&\text{if}\ (\frac{ab}p)=-1, \end{cases}$$ where $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. We also pose some conjectures for further research.

Abstract:Quadratic residue patterns modulo a prime are studied since 19th century. In the first part we extend existing results on the number of consecutive $\ell$-tuples of quadratic residues, studying corresponding algebraic curves and their jacobians, which happen to be products of jacobians of hyperelliptic curves. In the second part we state the last unpublished result of Lydia Goncharova on squares such that their differences are also squares, reformulate it in terms of algebraic geometry of a K3 surface, and prove it. The core of this theorem is an unexpected relation between the number of points on the K3 surface and that on a CM elliptic curve.

Abstract:In this paper we study some products related to quadratic residues and quartic residues modulo primes. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $A$ be any integer. We also determine $$\prod^{(p-1)/2}_{i,j=1\atop p\nmid 2i^2+5ij+2j^2}\left(2i^2+5ij+2j^2\right) \ \text{and}\ \prod^{(p-1)/2}_{i,j=1\atop p\nmid 2i^2-5ij+2j^2}\left(2i^2-5ij+2j^2\right)$$ modulo $p$.

Abstract:In this paper, in continuation of our work, on the determinants of cubic -matrix of order 2 and order 3, we have analyzed the possibilities of developing the concept of determinant of cubic-matrix with three indexes, studying the possibility of their calculation according the Laplace expansion method's. We have noted that the concept of permutation expansion which is used for square determinants, as well as the concept of Laplace expansion method used for square and rectangular determinants, also can be utilized to be used for this new concept of 3D Determinants. In this paper we proved that the Laplace expansion method's is also valid for cubic-matrix of order 2 and order 3, these results are given clearly and with detailed proofs, they are also accompanied by illustrative examples. We also give an algorithmic presentation for the Laplace expansion method's.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime, and let $d\in\mathbb Z$ with $p\nmid d$. For the determinants $$S_m(d,p)=\det\left[(i^2+dj^2)^{m}\right]_{1\leqslant i,j \leqslant (p-1)/2}\ \ \left(\frac{p-1}2\leqslant m\leqslant p-1\right),$$ Sun recently determined $S_m(d,p)$ modulo $p$ when $m\in\{p-2,p-3\}$ and $(\frac {-d}p)=-1$. In this paper, we obtain $S_{p-2}(d,p)$ modulo $p$ in the remaining case $(\frac{-d}p)=1$, and determine the Legendre symbols $(\frac{S_{p-3}\,(d,p)}p)$ and $(\frac{S_{p-4}\,(d,p)}p)$ in some special cases.

Abstract:In this paper we confirm three conjectures of Z.-W. Sun on determinants. We first show that any odd integer n> 3 divides the determinant vertical bar(i(2) + dj(2)) (i(2) + dj(2)/n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <=(n-1)/2), where d is any integer and (center dot/n) is the Jacobi symbol. Then we prove some divisibility results concerning vertical bar(i + dj)(n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <= n-1) and vertical bar(i(2) + dj(2))(n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <= n-1), where d not equal 0 and n> 2 are integers. Finally, for any odd prime p and integers c and d with p inverted iota cd, we determine completely the Legendre symbol (S-c(d,p)/p), where S-c(d, p) := vertical bar(i(2)+dj(2)+c/p)vertical bar(1 <= i,j <=(p-1)/2).
The Multidimensional Cube Recurrence

Abstract:We introduce a recurrence which we term the multidimensional cube recurrence, generalizing the octahedron recurrence studied by Propp, Fomin and Zelevinsky, Speyer, and Fock and Goncharov and the three-dimensional cube recurrence studied by Fomin and Zelevinsky, and Carroll and Speyer. The states of this recurrence are indexed by tilings of a polygon with rhombi, and the variables in the recurrence are indexed by vertices of these tilings. We travel from one state of the recurrence to another by performing elementary flips. We show that the values of the recurrence are independent of the order in which we perform the flips; this proof involves nontrivial combinatorial results about rhombus tilings which may be of independent interest. We then show that the multidimensional cube recurrence exhibits the Laurent phenomenon -- any variable is given by a Laurent polynomial in the other variables. We recognize a special case of the multidimensional cube recurrence as giving explicit equations for the isotropic Grassmannians IG(n-1,2n). Finally, we describe a tropical version of the multidimensional cube recurrence and show that, like the tropical octahedron recurrence, it propagates certain linear inequalities.

Quantum Algorithms for Weighing Matrices and Quadratic Residues

Abstract:In this article we investigate how we can employ the structure of combinatorial objects like Hadamard matrices and weighing matrices to device new quantum algorithms. We show how the properties of a weighing matrix can be used to construct a problem for which the quantum query complexity is ignificantly lower than the classical one. It is pointed out that this scheme captures both Bernstein & Vazirani's inner-product protocol, as well as Grover's search algorithm. In the second part of the article we consider Paley's construction of Hadamard matrices, which relies on the properties of quadratic characters over finite fields. We design a query problem that uses the Legendre symbol chi (which indicates if an element of a finite field F_q is a quadratic residue or not). It is shown how for a shifted Legendre function f_s(i)=chi(i+s), the unknown s in F_q can be obtained exactly with only two quantum calls to f_s. This is in sharp contrast with the observation that any classical, probabilistic procedure requires more than log(q) + log((1-e)/2) queries to solve the same problem.

Abstract:The goal of this note is to give an explicit formula for the residues of twists of the matrix algebra in terms of the twisting cocycle. Combined with the Fixed Point Theorem for actions of finite groups on affine buildings, this leads to a quick proof of the well-known characterization of unramified algebras in terms of Azumaya algebras.

Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. In this paper we investigate quadratic residues modulo p and related permutations, congruences and identities. If a1<…<a(p−1)/2 are all the quadratic residues modulo p among 1,…,p−1, then the list {12}p,…,{((p−1)/2)2}p (with {k}p the least nonnegative residue of k modulo p) is a permutation of a1,…,a(p−1)/2, and we show that the sign of this permutation is 1 or (−1)(h(−p)+1)/2 according as p≡3(mod8) or p≡7(mod8), where h(−p) is the class number of the imaginary quadratic field Q(−p). To achieve this, we evaluate the product ∏1⩽j<k⩽(p−1)/2(cot⁡πj2/p−cot⁡πk2/p) via Dirichlet's class number formula and Galois theory. We also obtain some new congruences and identities in product forms; for example, we determine the exact value of∏1⩽j<k⩽p−1cos⁡πaj2+bjk+ck2p for any a,b,c∈Z with ac(a+b+c)≢0(modp).

Abstract:We study solutions of a quadratic matrix equation arising in Riemannian geometry. Let $S$ be a real symmetric $n\times n$-matrix with zeros on the diagonal and let $\theta$ be a real number. We construct nonzero solutions $(S,\theta)$ of the set of quadratic equations \[\sum_kS_{i,k}=0\quad\text{ and }\quad\sum_{k}S_{i,k}S_{k,j}+S_{i,j}^2=\theta S_{i,j}\text { for }i<j.\] Our solutions relate the equations to strongly regular graphs, to group rings, and to multiplicative characters of finite fields.
