Abstract:How many different tiles are needed at the minimum to create aperiodicity? Several tilings made of two tiles were discovered, the first one being by Penrose in the seventies. Since then, scientists discovered other aperiodic tilings made of two tiles, including the square-triangle one, a tiling that has been particularly useful for the study of dodecagonal quasicrystals and soft matters. An open problem still exists: Can one tile be sufficient to create aperiodicity? This is known as the ein stein problem. We present in this paper an aperiodic tiling made of one single tile: an isosceles right triangle. The tile itself is not aperiodic and therefore not a solution to the ein stein problem but we present a set of substitution rules on the same tile that forces the tiling to be aperiodic. This paper presents its construction rules that proves its aperiodicity. We also show that this tiling offers an underlying dodecagonal structure close to the one of square-triangle tiling.

Abstract:We give a constructive method that can decrease the number of prototiles needed to tile a space. We achieve this by exchanging edge to edge matching rules for a small atlas of permitted patches. This method is illustrated with Wang tiles, and we apply our method to present via these rules a single prototile that can only tile $R^3$ aperiodically, and a pair of square tiles that can only tile $R^2$ aperiodically.

Abstract:We show that a single prototile can fill space uniformly but not admit a periodic tiling. A two-dimensional, hexagonal prototile with markings that enforce local matching rules is proven to be aperiodic by two independent methods. The space--filling tiling that can be built from copies of the prototile has the structure of a union of honeycombs with lattice constants of $2^n a$, where $a$ sets the scale of the most dense lattice and $n$ takes all positive integer values. There are two local isomorphism classes consistent with the matching rules and there is a nontrivial relation between these tilings and a previous construction by Penrose. Alternative forms of the prototile enforce the local matching rules by shape alone, one using a prototile that is not a connected region and the other using a three--dimensional prototile.

Abstract:An old theorem of Newman asserts that any tiling of $\mathbb{Z}$ by a finite set is periodic. A few years ago, Bhattacharya proved the periodic tiling conjecture in $\mathbb{Z}^2$. Namely, he proved that for a finite subset $F$ of $\mathbb{Z}^2$, if there exists $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^2$ such that $F \oplus A = \mathbb{Z}^2$ then there exists a periodic $A' \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^2$ such that $F \oplus A' = \mathbb{Z}^2$. The recent refutation of the periodic tiling conjecture in high dimensions due to Greenfeld and Tao motivates finding different generalizations of Newman's theorem and of Bhattacharya's theorem that hold in arbitrary dimension $d$. In this paper, we formulate and prove such generalizations. We do so by studying the structure of joint co-tiles in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Our generalization of Newman's theorem states that for any $d \ge 1$, any joint co-tile for $d$ independent tiles is periodic. For a $(d-1)$-tuple of finite subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ that satisfy a certain technical condition that we call property $(\star)$, we prove that any joint co-tile decomposes into disjoint $(d-1)$-periodic sets. Consequently, we show that for a $(d-1)$-tuple of finite subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ that satisfy property $(\star)$, the existence of a joint co-tile implies the existence of periodic joint co-tile. Conversely, we prove that if a finite subset $F$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ admits a periodic co-tile $A$, then there exist $(d-1)$ additional tiles that together with $F$ are independent and admit $A$ as a joint co-tile, so that the first $(d-2)$ of these tiles together with $F$ satisfy property $(\star)$. Combined, our results give a new necessary and sufficient condition for a subset of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ to tile periodically. We also discuss tilings and joint tilings in other countable abelian groups.

Abstract:Let $ABC$ be an equilateral triangle. For certain triangles $T$ (the "tile") and certain $N$, it is possible to cut $ABC$ into $N$ copies of $T$. It is known that only certain shapes of $T$ are possible, but until now very little was known about the possible values of $N$. Here we prove that for $N>3$, $N$ cannot be prime, and study more closely the possible tilings when the tile has a $\pi/3$ angle.

Abstract:A longstanding open problem asks for an aperiodic monotile, also known as an "einstein": a shape that admits tilings of the plane, but never periodic tilings. We answer this problem for topological disk tiles by exhibiting a continuum of combinatorially equivalent aperiodic polygons. We first show that a representative example, the "hat" polykite, can form clusters called "metatiles", for which substitution rules can be defined. Because the metatiles admit tilings of the plane, so too does the hat. We then prove that generic members of our continuum of polygons are aperiodic, through a new kind of geometric incommensurability argument. Separately, we give a combinatorial, computer-assisted proof that the hat must form hierarchical -- and hence aperiodic -- tilings.

Abstract:A brief history of planar aperiodic tile sets is presented, starting from the Domino Problem proposed by Hao Wang in 1961. We provide highlights that led to the discovery of the Taylor--Socolar aperiodic monotile in 2010 and the Hat and Spectre aperiodic monotiles in 2023. The Spectre tile is an amazingly simple monotile; a single tile whose translated and rotated copies tile the plane but only in a way that lacks any translational periodicity. We showcase this breakthrough discovery through the 60$+$ years that aperiodic tile sets have been considered.

Abstract:We study a family of substitution tilings with similar right triangles of two sizes which is obtained using the substitution rule introduced in [Danzer, L. and van Ophuysen, G. A species of planar triangular tilings with inflation factor $\sqrt{-\tau}$. Res. Bull. Panjab Univ. Sci. 2000, 50, 1-4, pp. 137--175 (2001)]. In that paper, it is proved this family of tilings can be obtained from a local rule using decorated tiles. That is, that this family is \emph{sofic}. In the present paper, we provide an alternative proof of this fact. We use more decorated tiles than Danzer and van Ophuysen (22 in place of 10). However, our decoration of supertiles is more intuitive and our local rule is simpler.

Metallic mean Wang tiles II: the dynamics of an aperiodic computer chip

Abstract:We consider a new family $(\mathcal{T}_n)_{n\geq1}$ of aperiodic sets of Wang tiles and we describe the dynamical properties of the set $\Omega_n$ of valid configurations $\mathbb{Z}^2\to\mathcal{T}_n$. The tiles can be defined as the different instances of a square shape computer chip whose inputs and outputs are 3-dimensional integer vectors. The family include the Ammann aperiodic set of 16 Wang tiles and gathers the hallmarks of other small aperiodic sets of Wang tiles. Notably, the tiles satisfy additive versions of equations verified by the Kari--Culik aperiodic sets of 14 and 13 Wang tiles. Also configurations in $\Omega_n$ are the codings of a $\mathbb{Z}^2$-action on a 2-dimensional torus like the Jeandel--Rao aperiodic set of 11 Wang tiles. The family broadens the relation between quadratic integers and aperiodic tilings beyond the omnipresent golden ratio as the dynamics of $\Omega_n$ involves the positive root $\beta$ of the polynomial $x^2-nx-1$, also known as the $n$-th metallic mean. We show the existence of an almost one-to-one factor map $\Omega_n\to\mathbb{T}^2$ which commutes the shift action on $\Omega_n$ with horizontal and vertical translations by $\beta$ on $\mathbb{T}^2$. The factor map can be explicitely defined by the average of the top labels from the same row of tiles as in Kari and Culik examples. The proofs are based on the minimality of $\Omega_n$ (proved in a previous article) and a polygonal partition of $\mathbb{T}^2$ which we show is a Markov partition for the toral $\mathbb{Z}^2$-action. The partition and the sets of Wang tiles are symmetric which makes them, like Penrose tilings, worthy of investigation.

Abstract:We construct an example of a group $G = \mathbb{Z}^2 \times G_0$ for a finite abelian group $G_0$, a subset $E$ of $G_0$, and two finite subsets $F_1,F_2$ of $G$, such that it is undecidable in ZFC whether $\mathbb{Z}^2\times E$ can be tiled by translations of $F_1,F_2$. In particular, this implies that this tiling problem is aperiodic, in the sense that (in the standard universe of ZFC) there exist translational tilings of $E$ by the tiles $F_1,F_2$, but no periodic tilings. Previously, such aperiodic or undecidable translational tilings were only constructed for sets of eleven or more tiles (mostly in $\mathbb{Z}^2$). A similar construction also applies for $G = \mathbb{Z}^d$ for sufficiently large $d$. If one allows the group $G_0$ to be non-abelian, a variant of the construction produces an undecidable translational tiling with only one tile $F$. The argument proceeds by first observing that a single tiling equation is able to encode an arbitrary system of tiling equations, which in turn can encode an arbitrary system of certain functional equations once one has two or more tiles. In particular, one can use two tiles to encode tiling problems for an arbitrary number of tiles.

Abstract:By fully describing the lattice of subfields of some towers of number fields built by iterating square roots, we obtain infinitely many fields, each of them either contradicts Julia Robinson's problem (obtaining a JR-number $4$ which is not a minimum) or gives a Julia Robinson number strictly between four and infinity. This improves a previous result by M. Castillo and the same authors.
