Abstract:Unconventional shale gas production is often characterized by a short period of high production followed by a rapid decline in the production rate. Given the high costs of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, it is critical to identify the mechanisms behind the production loss. The existing shale gas production models often assume constant matrix permeability. However, laboratory observations show that matrix permeability can decrease significantly with increasing effective stress, which highlights the necessity of considering the stress-dependent properties of shale matrix in production analysis. Moreover, the compaction of pore space will also increase the matrix permeability by enhancing the gas-slippage effect. In this paper, a matrix permeability model which couples the effect of pore volume compaction and non-Darcy slip flow is derived. Numerical simulations are conducted to understand the role of matrix permeability evolution during production. Changes of fractures’ permeability and contact area during depletion process are also taken into account. The results indicate that the loss of fracture permeability has a greater impact at the early stage of the depletion process, while matrix permeability evolution is more important for the long-term production.
A Multi-Scale Flow Model for Production Performance Analysis in Shale Gas Reservoirs with Fractal Geometry

Abstract:Shale gas reservoirs can be divided into three regions, including hydraulic fracture regions, stimulating reservoir volume regions (SRV regions), and outer stimulating reservoir volume regions (OSRV regions). Due to the impact of hydraulic fracturing, induced fractures in SRV regions are often irregular. In addition, a precise description of secondary fractures in SRV regions is of critical importance for production analysis and prediction. In this work, the following work is achieved: (1) the complex fracture network in the SRV region is described with fractal theory; (2) a dual inter-porosity flow mechanism with sorption and diffusion behaviors is considered in both SRV and OSRV regions; and (3) both multi-rate and multi-pressure solutions are proposed for history matching based on fractal models and Duhamel convolution theory. Compared with previous numerical and analytic methods, the developed model can provide more accurate dynamic parameter estimates for production analysis in a computationally efficient manner. In this paper, type curves are also established to delineate flow characteristics of the system. It is found that the flow can be classified as six stages, including a bi-linear flow regime, a linear flow regime, a transition flow regime, an inter-porosity flow regime from the matrix to the fractures in the inner region, inter-porosity flow regime from matrix to fractures in the outer region, and a boundary dominant flow regime. The effects of the fracture and matrix properties, fractal parameters, inter-porosity flow coefficients, and sorption characteristics on type curves and production performance were studied in detail. Finally, production performance was analyzed for Marcellus and Fuling shale gas wells, in the U.S.A. and China, respectively.
A Semianalytical Production Prediction Model and Dynamics Performance Analysis for Shale Gas Wells

Abstract:The shale gas productivity model based on shale gas nonlinear seepage mechanism is an effective way to reasonably predict productivity. The incomplete gas nonlinear effects considered in the current production prediction models can lead to inaccurate production prediction. Based on the conventional five-zone compound flow model, comprehensive gas nonlinearities were considered in the improved compound linear flow model proposed in the paper and a semianalytical solution for productivity was obtained. The reliability of the productivity model was verified by the field data, and then, the 20-year production performance analysis of the gas well was studied. Ultimately, the key influencing factors of the fracture control stage and matrix control stage have been analyzed. Research indicated the following: (1) the EUR predicted by the productivity model is higher than the EUR that the comprehensive nonlinear effects are not considered, which demonstrated that the various nonlinear effects cannot be neglected during the production prediction to ensure the greater calculation accuracy; (2) during the early production stage of shale reservoir, the adsorbed gas is basically not recovered, and the cumulative adsorption contribution rate does not exceed 10%. The final adsorption gas contribution rate is 23.28%, and the annual adsorption rate can exceed 50% in the 20th year, showing that free gas and adsorbed gas are, respectively, important sources of the early stage of production and long-term stable production; (3) the widely ranged three-dimensional fracturing reformation of shale reservoirs and reasonable bottom hole pressure in the later matrix development process should be implemented to increase the effective early production of the reservoir and ensure the earlier gas production process of the matrix development. The findings of this study can help for better ensuring the prediction accuracy of the estimated ultimate recovery and understanding the main influencing factors of the dynamic performance of gas wells so as to provide a theoretical reference for production optimization and development plan formulation of the shale gas reservoirs.

Abstract:The shale gas experiences many different spatial scales during its flow in the reservoir, which will engender different flow mechanisms. In order to accurately simulate the production performance of shale gas well, it is essential to establish a multi-continuum model for shale gas reservoir. Based on the geometrical scenario of multistage horizontal well fracturing, this paper builds up a triple-continuum model incorporating three systems: matrix with extremely low permeability, less permeable natural fractures and highly permeable hydraulic fractures. This numerical model employs Langmuir adsorption equation to present the influence of desorption gas in matrix and considers the Klinkenberg effect in matrix and natural fractures by adjusting the apparent permeability. The solution of this model is achieved using implicit scheme. Eventually, this model is applied on the single well production situation in a synthetic reservoir, production decline curves and cumulative production curves are obtained, then the sensitivity analysis is made on various kinds of parameters; thus, the influences of these parameters on production rate are obtained: The gas rate will rise with the increase in hydraulic fracture half-length, meshing size, Langmuir volume and Langmuir pressure, but with the decrease in hydraulic fracture spacing.

Comprehensive modeling of multiple transport mechanisms in shale gas reservoir production

Abstract:<p>A boom in the production of shale gas has recently impacted the world's energy supply. The hydraulic fracturing technology has been widely used in the development of shale gas reservoirs. Models for accurate reservoir simulation are essential for their economic production. In this paper, a model for shale gas reservoir production is proposed to account for slip flow, Knudsen diffusion, surface diffusion, gas adsorption/desorption, stress dependence of a pore structure, a non-ideal gas effect, and a flow mechanism difference between organic and inorganic content in the shale matrix. This model is implemented in our in-house simulator with a coupled MINC-EDFM approach to study and predict shale gas production behavior. Comprehensive sensitivity studies are performed to analyze the importance of different parameters in shale gas production. These parameters are divided into two categories. The first category includes reservoir data, such as shale matrix porosity, a nanopore radius, an organic/inorganic volume ratio, hydraulic fracture half-length, and fracture spacing. The second category includes parameters relevant to flow mechanisms, such as a non-ideal gas effect, stress dependence, presence of an adsorbed layer as well as a selection of a flow mechanism model. It is found that parameters related to hydraulic fractures impact calculated gas production more than reservoir matrix data. Among the fracturing parameters, hydraulic fracture half-length has a stronger effect than fracture spacing, and among matrix properties, porosity has a larger impact than a nanopore radius or the assumed organic/inorganic content ratio. These results help to optimize a shale gas reservoir production design. In addition, in a synthetic case assuming a 1 nm pore radius, the presence of an adsorbed gas layer has a more tremendous effect compared to the non-ideal gas and stress dependence phenomena. Moreover, the developed simulator with the multiple transport mechanisms can be used to accurately predict shale gas reservoir production. The findings of this study help a better understanding of shale gas flow and can be used to enhance the production of shale gas reservoirs.</p>

Abstract:The shale formation, a common carbon-hydrogen reservoir, has numerous nanoscale pores that facilitate multiple gas transport mechanisms, including viscous flow, slip flow, Knudsen diffusion, and surface diffusion. Additionally, various action mechanisms involving effective stress, real gas effect, gas adsorption and desorption, and fracture-pore characteristics significantly influence gas transport. In this study, we conceptualize shale as a triple porosity medium comprising organic matrix, inorganic matrix, and microfractures. For each system, its hydraulic-mechanical coupled model with action mechanisms and gas transport mechanisms is derived based on fractal theory. After validating the model with Barnett and Marcellus data, the evolution of apparent permeability and gas pressure is studied, as well as the influences of pore fractal features, the real gas effect, and the number of hydraulic fractures on gas extraction. Simulation results indicate that, in comparison to organic matrix, inorganic pore fractal features exert a more noticeable effect on cumulative production. The real gas effect is critical in gas transport and reservoir reserve estimation; disregarding this effect results in a 17.4% underestimation of cumulative gas production by the 1600th day. Fracture interference attenuates the improvement in cumulative production gains from increased hydraulic fracture numbers.

Abstract:Multiple types of pores are present in shale gas reservoirs, including organic pores of nano scale, non-organic pores, natural and hydraulic fractures. Gas flow in different types of pores is controlled by different mechanisms, and Darcy’s law is not able to describe all these processes adequately. This paper presents a “quadruple-porosity” model and corresponding analytical solutions to describe the different permeable media and simulate transient production behavior of multiple-fractured horizontal wells in shale gas reservoirs. Dimensionless transient production decline curves are plotted, and characteristic bilinear flow and linear flow periods are identified based on the analysis of type curves. Sensitivity analysis of transient production dynamics suggests that desorption of absorbed gas, Knudsen diffusive flow, gas slippage and parameters related to hydraulic fractures have significant influence on the production dynamics of a multiple-fractured horizontal well in shale gas reservoirs. The model provides insights into multiple shale gas flow mechanisms and production prediction of shale gas reservoirs.

Abstract:The flow capacity of shale gas reservoirs is easily impaired during the depletion process due to strong stress sensitivity. Thereby, an adequate production system, namely, the managed pressure drop method, has been widely introduced to the industrial practice application by decelerating the wellbore pressure drop rate and ultimately improving the long-term production process. This work presents a review of the pressure drawdown management mechanisms for shale gas formations. However, clarifying the water-shale interaction physical chemistry process and developing a mathematical model that accurately describes the water-shale interaction mechanism remain a challenge. Moreover, different classifications of the managed production simulation research approaches are discussed in detail. Each approach has its own merits and demerits. Among them, numerical simulations are commonly seen in cognizance of characterizing the managed pressure drawdown production period but are found to be relatively time-consuming and also computationally expensive. An optimized theoretical model is therefore essential because it can lead to a precise estimation of the ultimate long-term production and capture instantaneously the actual shale gas reservoir depletion phenomenon with various production systems compared to other available methods. The key influence of managed pressured production for single wells in shale reservoirs is elaborated as well. As observed from the current review, an accurate description of the pressure drop management mechanism is crucial for the theoretical model of the pressure control production process for shale gas wells. The influence of water-rock interaction on the managed pressure drawdown mechanism cannot be ignored. There have thus been works to improve and enhance it for use in theoretical models for shale formations. On the other hand, the advancement of theoretical models presents an opportunity for better representation of the managed pressure drop production process.

Abstract:Unmodified original shale gas reservoirs have been demonstrated to have extremely low permeability, and the long horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques are widely used to obtain economic gas production. However, these techniques can result in a nonlinear flow of fluids during transport through the multi-scale pore system and the complex fracture network around the horizontal well, as well as a two-phase gas-water flow during shale production. To solve these issues, in this paper, first, the complex fracture network around the horizontal well is characterized using the discrete main hydraulic fractures combined with composite regions with different properties. Then, the dual porosity media and discrete-fracture model are implemented to describe the nonlinear flow behavior in the multi-scale pore system, and a wellbore pressure drop model is established to characterize the transient two-phase gas–liquid flow in the different sections of the fractured horizontal well. Finally, the coupled reservoir wellbore flow model is fully implicitly solved using the control volume finite element method and unstructured tetrahedral grids. The results of the simulation model of a multi-stage fractured horizontal well in the shale of the Longmaxi Formation will help field engineers deeply understand gas and water production performance and the dynamics of wellbore and reservoir pressure, as well as optimize development schemes.

Abstract:A major challenge in transient pressure analysis for shale gas wells is their complex transient flow behavior and fracturing parameters. While numerical simulations offer high accuracy, analytical models are attractive for transient pressure analysis due to their high computational efficiency and broad applicability. However, traditional analytical models are often oversimplified, making it difficult to capture the complex seepage system, and three-dimensional fracture characteristics are seldom considered. To address these limitations, this study presents a comprehensive hybrid model that characterizes the transient flow behavior and analyzes the pressure response of a fractured shale gas well with a three-dimensional discrete fracture. To achieve this, the hydraulic fracture is discretized into several panels, and the transient flow equation is numerically solved using the finite difference method. Based on the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the pseudo-steady diffusion in matrix and Darcy flow in the network of micro-fractures, a reservoir model is established, and the Laplace transformation is adopted to solve the model analytically. The transient responses are obtained by dynamically coupling the flow in the reservoir and the discrete fracture. The precision of the proposed model is validated using the commercial numerical simulator, Eclipse. A series of transient pressure dynamic curves are drawn to make a precise observation of different flow regimes, and the effects of several parameters on transient pressure response are also examined. The results show that the shale gas well testing interpretation curves comprise nine flow stages. The pressure drop of shale gas reservoirs is lower than that of conventional gas reservoirs due to the replenishment of desorbed gas. The artificial fracture flow capacity, fracture length, and height are the main engineering factors affecting the pressure responses of shale gas wells. Maximizing the degree and scope of reconstruction can enhance the gas well production capacity during fracturing construction. The research results also indicate that our model is a reliable semi-analytical model for well test interpretations in real case studies.

Abstract:Due to the ultralow permeability of shale gas reservoirs, stimulating the reservoir formation by using hydraulic fracturing technique and horizontal well is required to create the pathway of gas flow so that the shale gas can be recovered in an economically viable manner. The hydraulic fractured formations can be divided into two regions, stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) region and non-SRV region, and the produced shale gas may exist as free gas or adsorbed gas under the initial formation condition. Investigating the recovery factor of different types of shale gas in different region may assist us to make more reasonable development strategies. In this paper, we build a numerical simulation model, which has the ability to take the unique shale gas flow mechanisms into account, to quantitatively describe the gas production characteristics in each region based on the field data collected from a shale gas reservoir in Sichuan Basin in China. The contribution of the free gas and adsorbed gas to the total production is analyzed dynamically through the entire life of the shale gas production by adopting a component subdivision method. The effects of the key reservoir properties, such as shale matrix, secondary natural fracture network, and primary hydraulic fractures, on the recovery factor are also investigated.

Abstract:Gas production from shale reservoirs has increased rapidly in the past decade, becoming an important source for natural gas supply. For tight shale formations, horizontal wells combined with multi-stage hydraulic fracturing is the key to realize commercial production. The multi-scale flowing spaces and complex flowing mechanisms of shale gas reservoirs pose challenges to elucidating their production behaviors. Existing modelling methods are not able to distinguish gas production from different regions or different forms (adsorbed-gas/free-gas). Therefore, they cannot accurately assess how much produced gas is from desorption effects and whether gas stored in the unstimulated region will support production. Answers to these questions will improve our understanding of production mechanisms and facilitate the optimization of development plans.In this study, we proposed a general component subdivision modelling method to separately model the flowing behavior of gas stored in different forms or different regions. As an example the method is incorporated in the compositional model in the UNCONG simulator. Applying this method, a conceptual model based on Fuling Jiaoshiba shale was built, and contributions from adsorbed-gas/free-gas inside of the stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) and outside of the SRV were analyzed. Sensitivity studies on fracture spacing were also performed. The results show that, for the Fuling case, when the matrix permeability is 10(-4) mD, 78% of total production comes from the free-gas inside of the SRV after about 20 years of production, and free-gas outside of the SRV and adsorbed-gas inside of the SRV also help to sustain long-term production. However, when the matrix permeability is as low as 10(-5) mD, almost all production comes from free-gas inside of the SRV within 20 years of production. Sensitivity studies show that network fractures play an important role to increase production. In the final case study, a more efficient way for component subdivision modelling was demonstrated. This study provides insights for shale gas production and its controlling factors, which can be utilized to optimize fracturing design and resources assessment. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Novel Model for Rate Transient Analysis in Stress-Sensitive Shale Gas Reservoirs

Abstract:Technical advances in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling technologies enable shale to be commercially exploited. Due to the technical and economic limitations of well testing in shale gas plays, rate transient analysis has become a more attractive option. After hydraulic fracturing, flow mechanisms in multiple scaled pores of shale become extraordinarily complicated: adsorption in nanopores, diffusion in micropores, and non-Darcy flow in macropores. Moreover, shale gas reservoirs are stress-sensitive because of ultralow permeability and diffusivity in a matrix. Furthermore, the porosity and permeability of natural fractures are stress-dependent as well. Accounting for all of these complex flow mechanisms, especially the aforementioned stress-sensitive parameters, a semianalytical production solution of a multiple fractured horizontal well (MFHW) can rapidly predict the entire production behavior. Scholars have done much work on the complex flow mechanisms of shale. Most models regarded permeability as a stress-sensitive parameter while diffusivity and porosity were considered to be a constant. However, diffusivity and porosity were proved to be stress-sensitive as experimental science developed. In this study, we present a novel semianalytical model for rate transient analysis of MFHW, which simultaneously incorporates multiple stress-sensitive parameters into flow mechanisms. Substituting stress-dependent parameters (diffusivity, porosity, and permeability) into governing equations resulted in strong nonlinearities, which was solved by employing the perturbation method. Production behaviors with only stress-sensitive permeability were compared with multiple stress-dependent parameters. The new model with multiple stress-sensitive parameters declined slower than the permeability-sensitive model, and the new model matched better with the field data. In addition, the effects of major stress-sensitive parameters on production decline curves were analyzed by the proposed model. The sensitivity analysis indicated that different parameters had their own degree of sensitivity intensity and influence on the production period. Finally, 1001 wells from the Marcellus shale play were divided into three well groups. Estimated inversion values of reservoir parameters from the three well groups and relevant single wells were consistent with the field data. The inverted values of single wells fluctuate within the inversion values of well groups, which indicates that the production behavior of well groups could be a guide for rate transient analysis of a single well in shale gas reservoirs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Increasing the production and utilization of shale gas is of great significance for building a clean and low-carbon energy system. Sharp decline of gas production has been widely observed in shale gas reservoirs. How to forecast shale gas production is still challenging due to complex fracture networks, dynamic fracture properties, frac hits, complicated multiphase flow and multi-scale flow as well as data quality and uncertainty. This work develops an integrated framework for evaluating shale gas well production based on data-driven models. Firstly, a comprehensive dominated-factor system has been established, including geological, drilling, fracturing, and production factors. Data processing and visualization are required to ensure data quality and determine final data set. Shale gas production evaluation model is developed to evaluate shale gas production levels. Finally, the random forest algorithm is used to forecast shale gas production. The prediction accuracy of shale gas production level is higher than 95% based on the shale gas reservoirs in China. Forty-one wells are randomly selected to predict cumulative gas production using the optimal regression model. The proposed shale gas production evaluation framework overcomes too many assumptions of analytical or semi-analytical models and avoids huge computation cost and poor generalization for numerical modelling.

Numerical Modeling of Natural Fracture Distributions in Shale

Abstract:The production efficiency of shale gas is affected by the interaction between hydraulic fractures and natural fractures. This study presents a simulation of natural fractures in shale reservoirs based on a discrete fracture network (DFN) method for hydraulic fracturing engineering. Fracture properties of the model are calculated from core fracture data according to statistical mathematical analysis. The calculation results make full use of the quantitative information of core fracture orientation, density, opening and length, which is the direct and extensive data of mining engineering. The reliability and applicability of the model are analyzed considering the model size and density, and the calculation method of dominant size and density is proposed. Then, finite element analysis is applied to hydraulic fracturing numerical simulation of shale fractured reservoir in southeastern Chongqing. The hydraulic pressure distribution, fracture propagation, acoustic emission information, and in‐situ stress change during fracturing are analyzed. The results show the application of fracture statistics in fracture modeling and the influence of fracture distribution on hydraulic fracturing engineering. The present analysis may provide a reference for shale gas exploitation.

Abstract:Deep shale gas reservoirs have geological characteristics of high temperature, high pressure, high stress, and inferior ability to pass through fluids. The multi-stage fractured horizontal well is the key to exploiting the deep shale gas reservoir. However, during the production process, the effectiveness of the hydraulic fracture network decreases with the closure of fractures, which accelerates the decline of shale gas production. In this paper, we addressed the problems of unclear fracture closure mechanisms and low accuracy of shale gas production prediction during deep shale gas production. Then we established the fluid–solid–heat coupled model coupling the deformation and fluid flow among the fracture surface, proppant and the shale matrix. When the fluid–solid–heat coupled model was applied to the fracture network, it was well solved by our numerical method named discontinuous discrete fracture method. Compared with the conventional discrete fracture method, the discontinuous discrete fracture method can describe the three-dimensional morphology of the fracture while considering the effect of the change of fracture surface permeation coefficient on the coupled fracture–matrix flow and describing the displacement discontinuity across the fracture. Numerical simulations revealed that the degree of fracture closure increases as the production time proceeds, and the degree of closure of the secondary fractures is higher than that of the primary fractures. Shale creep and proppant embedment both increase the degree of fracture closure. The reduction in fracture surface permeability due to proppant embedment reduces the rate of fluid transfer between matrix and fracture, which has often been overlooked in the past. However, it significantly impacts shale gas production, with calculations showing a 24.7% cumulative three-year yield reduction. This study is helpful to understand the mechanism of hydraulic fracture closure. Therefore, it provides the theoretical guidance for maintaining the long-term effectiveness of hydraulic fractures.

Abstract:We presented a general multi-physics model for shale gas flow in fractured systems, first the first time, with fully coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical (THM) properties. The impact of gas adsorption, real gas properties, gas flow in nano-scale pore space and geomechanics effects on total gas flow capacity are investigated. We also showed that by elevating shale rock temperature, the characteristic of gas adsorption behavior can be substantially altered.

Abstract:<p>Shale gas, although unconventional, is a prospective clean energy source. Shale gas production is a complex multi-scale process with its spatial size ranging from the nanoscale to kilometer-scale. During shale production, the gas transport process involves the diffusion of dissolved gas molecules into the matrix bulk, desorption of adsorbed gas from the micropore surface, Knudsen diffusion and slip flow of free gas in the pore, and Darcy flow or even high-speed non-Darcy flow of free gas in the fracture network. Accordingly, understanding the shale gas transport process in the shale reservoirs poses a long-standing problem to researchers and engineers. Computational modeling offers an opportunity to effectively reveal the gas multi-scale transport mechanisms and accurately predict the amount of shale production. In this review, the shale gas transport process during shale gas production is firstly introduced. Thereafter, the multi-scale transport phenomena involving shale gas molecule desorption from the shale matrix at the atomic and molecular level, diffusion in the nanopore, diffusion and seepage into the micropore, and convection and mass flow in the mesoscopic pores and macropore are elucidated. Moreover, the corresponding multi-scale simulation models that describe the above phenomena and shale production are explained. The shale gas production genome model, which provides insights into the entire process of the shale gas production model, is proposed and clarified according to the multi-scale simulation models used in the shale gas production prediction. The shale gas production genome model is convenient for elucidating shale transport mechanisms and guiding shale gas reservoir exploitation.</p>

Abstract:Hydraulic fractures and natural fractures constitute the gas flow channels of fractured horizontal wells in shale gas reservoirs. Their shape and structural characteristics determine the production of horizontal wells and reservoir pressure propagation. To study the influence of hydraulic fractures and natural fractures on reservoir production performance at different degrees of complexity, a method was proposed to construct and simulate hydraulic fractures and natural fractures with complex shapes based on an embedded discrete fracture model, and the finite volume method was used to solve the model. On this basis, the effects of hydraulic fracture complexity and natural fracture connectivity on the production performance of fractured horizontal wells are analyzed. The results show that when the natural fracture orientation is perpendicular to the pressure wave propagation direction, the natural fracture will form a local shielding effect on the pressure propagation. Better natural fracture connectivity leads to better seepage capacity of the complex fracture network. Under the same conditions, hydraulic fracture complexity is more controllable than natural fracture connectivity, and the contribution of hydraulic fracture complexity to horizontal well production is underestimated. Increasing the complexity of hydraulic fracture is the key to improve the effect of hydraulic fracturing. Combining ant body technology and microseismic monitoring data, the method proposed in this paper is applied in the Longmaxi shale formation to obtain the history matching with the gas well production data and predict the estimated ultimate recovery.

Abstract:Accurately describing the behavior of a gas-water two-phase flow in shale gas reservoirs is crucial for analyzing production dynamics in the field. Current research generally lacks consideration of the differences in physical properties and adsorption characteristics between the oleophilic organic matrix and the hydrophilic inorganic matrix. This study considers the organic matrix system as a single-phase gas flow, while the inorganic matrix and fracture systems involve a gas-water two-phase flow. Taking into account the impact of the adsorbed water layer on permeability at the surface of nanoscale pores in an inorganic matrix, the model comprehensively incorporates multiple mechanisms such as adsorption-desorption, the slippage effect, and Knudsen diffusion in the organic matrix and clay minerals. A multiscale gas-water two-phase comprehensive flow model for shale gas reservoirs has been established, and the results of the numerical model were validated against commercial software and actual field data. Simulation results over 1000 days indicate that early production from gas wells is primarily supplied by fractures, whereas free gas or desorbed gas from inorganic and organic matrices gradually contributes to the flow during the middle and later stages of production. As the Langmuir pressure and volume in the organic matrix and clay minerals increase, so does the corresponding gas production. The adsorbed water layer on the surface of inorganic nanopores reduces permeability, leading to a decrease in single-well cumulative gas production by 8.41%. The impact of the adsorbed water layer on gas production cannot be overlooked. The simulation method proposed in this study provides theoretical support for analyzing the gas-water two-phase flow behavior in shale gas reservoirs.
