Abstract:Glasma Flux Tubes, Mono Jets with squeeze out flow around them plus the Chiral Magnetic Effect(CME) are physical phenomenon that generate two particle correlation with respect to the reaction plane in mid-central 20\% to 30\% Au-Au collision $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200.0 GeV measured at RHIC.

Abstract:Squeeze out happen when the expanding central fireball flows around a large surface flux tube in a central Au-Au collision at RHIC. We model such an effect in a flux tube model. Two particle correlations with respect to the $v_2$ axis formed by the soft fireball particles flowing around this large flux tube is a way of measuring the effect.

Abstract:Within the AMPT Monte Carlo model, fluctuations in the initial transverse parton density are shown to lead to harmonic flows. The net back-to-back dihadron azimuthal correlation after subtraction of contributions from harmonic flows still has a double peak that is independent of the initial geometric triangularity and unique to the jet-induced Mach cone and expanding hot spots distorted by radial flow. The longitudinal structure of hot spots also leads to a nearside ridge in dihadron correlation with a large rapidity gap. By successively randomizing the azimuthal angle of the transverse momenta and positions of initial partons, one can isolate the effects of jet-induced medium excitation and expanding hot spots on the dihadron azimuthal correlation. The double peaks in the net dihadron and γ-hadron correlation are quantitatively different since the later is caused only by jet-induced Mach cone.

Abstract:The search for the chiral magnetic effect (CME) has been a subject of great interest in the field of high-energy heavy-ion collision physics, and various observables have been proposed to probe the CME. Experimental observables are often contaminated with background contributions arising from collective motions (specifically elliptic flow) of the collision system. We present a method study of event-shape engineering (ESE) that projects the CME-sensitive γ112 correlator and its variations (γ132 and γ123) to a class of events with minimal flow. We discuss the realization of the zero-flow mode, the sensitivity on the CME signal, and the corresponding statistical significance for Au+Au, Ru+Ru, and Zr+Zr collisions at sNN=200 GeV with a multiphase transport model, as well as a new event generator, event-by-event anomalous-viscous fluid dynamics.

Abstract:Fast thermalization and a strong buildup of elliptic flow of QCD matter as found at RHIC are understood as the consequence of perturbative QCD (pQCD) interactions within the 3+1 dimensional parton cascade BAMPS. The main contributions stem from pQCD bremsstrahlung $2 \leftrightarrow 3 $ processes. By comparing to Au+Au data of the flow parameter $v_2$ the shear viscosity to entropy ratio $\eta/s$ has been extracted dynamically and lies in the range of 0.08 and 0.2. Also jet-quenching has been investigated consistently within a full dynamical picture of the heavy ion collision. The results for gluonic jets indicate a slightly too large suppression, but are encouraging to understand the two major phenomena, strong flow and jet-quenching, within a unified microscopic treatment of kinetic processes. In addition, simulations on the temporal propagation of dissipative shock waves lead to the observation that an $\eta/s$ ratio larger than 0.2 prevents the development of well-defined shock waves on timescales typical for ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:We study the charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions, as motivated by the search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) and the investigation of related background contributions. In particular we aim to understand how these correlations induced by various proposed effects evolve from collisions with AuAu system to that with UU system. To do that, we quantify the generation of magnetic field in UU collisions at RHIC energy and its azimuthal correlation with the matter geometry using event-by-event simulations. Taking the experimental data for charge-dependent azimuthal correlations from AuAu collisions and extrapolating to UU with reasonable assumptions, we examine the resulting correlations to be expected in UU collisions and compare them with recent STAR measurements. Based on such analysis we discuss the viability for explaining the data with a combination of the CME-like and flow-induced contributions.

Abstract:The interplay of quantum anomalies with strong magnetic field and vorticity in chiral systems could lead to novel transport phenomena, such as the chiral magnetic effect (CME), the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) and the chiral vortical effect (CVE). In high-energy nuclear collisions, these chiral effects may survive the expansion of a quark-gluon plasma fireball and be detected in experiments. The experimental searches for the CME, the CMW and the CVE, have aroused extensive interest over the past couple of decades. The main goal of this article is to review latest experimental progress in search for these novel chiral transport phenomena at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at BNL and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Future programs to help reduce uncertainties and facilitate the interpretation of the data are also discussed.

Abstract:The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes. We report such measurements in Au+Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. It is found that the charge separation, with the flow background removed, is consistent with zero in peripheral (large impact parameter) collisions. Some indication of finite CME signals is seen in midcentral (intermediate impact parameter) collisions. Significant residual background effects may, however, still be present.

Abstract:Collective flow of protons and negative pions has been studied within the momentum region of $4.2 \div 4.5$ AGeV/c ($E =3.4 \div 3.7$ AGeV) for different projectile-target combinations involving carbon and, specifically, He-C, C-C, C-Ne, C-Cu and C-Ta. The data stem from the SKM-200-GIBS streamer chamber and from Propane Bubble Chamber systems utilized at JINR. The directed flow of protons grows dramatically in the carbon region when the counterpart nucleus grows in mass between He and Ta. The elliptic proton flow points out of the reaction plane and also strengthens as system mass increases. Within the reaction plane, the negative pions flow in the same direction as protons for the lighter of the investigated systems, He-C, C-C and C-Ne, and in the opposite direction for the heavier, C-Cu and C-Ta. The Quark-Gluon String Model reproduces observed changes in the flow with system mass.

Abstract:The partonic elliptic flow in Au + Au collisions at energies currently available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) (root sNN = 200 GeV) is analyzed using a multiphase transport (AMPT) model. It is shown that the partons freezing out at the early stage are mainly emitted from the surface of the collision system. The integral elliptic flow of these partons is shown to decrease with time and to be consistent with the surface emission picture. The curve of the differential elliptic flow of partons freezing out at the early stage is flat relative to that of partons freezing out at the late stage. Both integral and differential elliptic flows of partons in the surface emission picture approach saturation for large cross sections.

Abstract:The deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions enables the exploration of the fundamental properties of matter under extreme conditions. Non-central collisions can produce strong magnetic fields on the order of $10^{18}$ Gauss, which offers a probe into the electrical conductivity of the QGP. In particular, quarks and anti-quarks carry opposite charges and receive contrary electromagnetic forces that alter their momenta. This phenomenon can be manifested in the collective motion of final-state particles, specifically in the rapidity-odd directed flow, denoted as $v_1(\mathsf{y})$. Here we present the charge-dependent measurements of $dv_1/d\mathsf{y}$ near midrapidities for $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, and $p(\bar{p})$ in Au+Au and isobar ($_{44}^{96}$Ru+$_{44}^{96}$Ru and $_{40}^{96}$Zr+$_{40}^{96}$Zr) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 200 GeV, and in Au+Au collisions at 27 GeV, recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The combined dependence of the $v_1$ signal on collision system, particle species, and collision centrality can be qualitatively and semi-quantitatively understood as several effects on constituent quarks. While the results in central events can be explained by the $u$ and $d$ quarks transported from initial-state nuclei, those in peripheral events reveal the impacts of the electromagnetic field on the QGP. Our data put valuable constraints on the electrical conductivity of the QGP in theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The chiral magnetic/vortical effect (CME/CVE) in heavy-ion collisions probe the topological sector of Quantum Chromodynamics, where P and CP symmetries are violated locally in strong interactions. However, the experimental observables for the CME/CVE are dominated by backgrounds related to elliptic flow and nonflow. We employ event shape variables to mitigate the flow background and event planes based on spectators to minimize the nonflow background. We report on the CME search in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 7.7, 14.6, 19.6, 27, and 200 GeV, as well as the CVE search at 19.6 and 27 GeV.

Abstract:We study the directed flow of identified particles in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=7.7$ to 62.4 GeV. The Glauber model is extended to include both a tilted deformation of the QGP fireball with respect to the longitudinal direction and a non-zero longitudinal flow velocity gradient in the initial state. By combining this improved initial condition with a (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model calculation, we obtain a satisfactory description of the transverse momentum spectra and the rapidity dependent directed flow coefficient of different hadron species. Our calculation indicates the sensitivity of the hadron directed flow, especially its splitting between protons and antiprotons, to both the initial geometry and the initial longitudinal flow velocity. Therefore, the combination of directed flow of different hadrons can provide a tight constraint on the initial condition of nuclear matter created in heavy-ion collisions. The initial condition extracted from the directed flow is further tested with the global polarization of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ and $\overline{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}$ within the same theoretical framework, where we obtain a reasonable description of these hyperon polarization observed at different collision energies at RHIC.

Abstract:Space-time picture of the anisotropic flow evolution in Au+Au collisions at BNL RHIC is studied for strange hadrons within the microscopic quark-gluon string model. The directed flow of both mesons and hyperons demonstrates wiggle structure with the universal antiflow slope at |y| < 2 for minimum bias events. This effect increases as the reaction becomes more peripheral. The development of both components of the anisotropic flow is closely related to particle freeze-out. Hadrons are emitted continuously, and different hadronic species are decoupled from the system at different times. These hadrons contribute differently to the formation and evolution of the elliptic flow, which can be decomposed onto three components: (i) flow created by hadrons emitted from the surface at the onset of the collision; (ii) flow produced by jets; (iii) hydrodynamic flow. Due to these features, the general trend in elliptic flow formation is that the earlier mesons are frozen, the weaker their elliptic flow. In contrast, baryons frozen at the end of the system evolution have stronger v2.

Abstract:The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a phenomenon that arises from the QCD anomaly in the presence of an external magnetic field. The experimental search for its evidence has been one of the key goals of the physics program of the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. The STAR collaboration has previously presented the results of a blind analysis of isobar collisions (${^{96}_{44}\text{Ru}}+{^{96}_{44}\text{Ru}}$, ${^{96}_{40}\text{Zr}}+{^{96}_{40}\text{Zr}}$) in the search for the CME. The isobar ratio ($Y$) of CME-sensitive observable, charge separation scaled by elliptic anisotropy, is close to but systematically larger than the inverse multiplicity ratio, the naive background baseline. This indicates the potential existence of a CME signal and the presence of remaining nonflow background due to two- and three-particle correlations, which are different between the isobars. In this post-blind analysis, we estimate the contributions from those nonflow correlations as a background baseline to $Y$, utilizing the isobar data as well as Heavy Ion Jet Interaction Generator simulations. This baseline is found consistent with the isobar ratio measurement, and an upper limit of 10% at 95% confidence level is extracted for the CME fraction in the charge separation measurement in isobar collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV.

Sliding Dumbbell Method to search for the CME in heavy ion collisions

Abstract:This study explores the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The CME, observed as back-to-back charge separation along the magnetic field axis, is investigated using the newly developed Sliding Dumbbell Method (SDM) applied to Au+Au events at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}$ = 200 GeV generated by the AMPT model with string melting configuration. The CME-like signal is externally injected in events by flipping charges of pairs of the particles perpendicular to the reaction plane. The study reports a significant enhancement of the CME-sensitive 3-particle $\gamma$ correlator in events with high back-to-back charge separation, in a given collision centrality. Additionally, a linear relationship is observed between the $\sqrt{|\gamma|}$ correlator for same-sign charge pairs and positive charge asymmetry ($\langle A{^+}\rangle$) across the dumbbell in CME-enriched sub-samples. Furthermore, the fraction of CME in $\Delta\gamma$ (difference between opposite and same sign $\gamma$ correlators) is presented across different collision centralities having different percentages of externally injected CME-like signal. Overall, the research aims to understand and detect the Chiral Magnetic Effect through innovative experimental method and detailed analysis of event structure.

Baryon-to-Meson Ratios in Jets from Au+Au and p+p Collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

Abstract:Measurements at RHIC and the LHC show strongly enhanced baryon-to-meson yield ratios at intermediate transverse momenta ($p_{\rm{T}}$) in high-energy nuclear collisions compared to $p$+$p$ baseline. This enhancement is attributed to the following QGP effects: strong hydrodynamic flow and parton recombination. Jet probes have been used extensively to gain insights into QGP properties, with substantial modifications to jet yields and internal structures seen across multiple measurements. Despite apparent medium-induced changes to jet fragmentation patterns, the LHC results indicate that in-jet baryon-to-meson ratios remain similar to that of $p$+$p$ measurements and are significantly different from that of the QGP bulk. To explore this behavior at RHIC, we employ particle identification through time-of-flight and TPC $dE/dx$ information alongside jet-track correlations to measure in-jet particle ratios for $p_{\rm{T}} < 5.0$ GeV/$c$. We present the first in-cone baryon-to-meson yield ratios associated with fully reconstructed jets from Au+Au and $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 200$ GeV using the STAR detector at RHIC.

Abstract:We study the propagation of sound-like perturbations created by a jet moving with supersonic velocity through the quark-gluon-plasma created in heavy-ion reactions within the model MACE (MAch Cone Evolution). Predictions for heavy-ion reactions at RHIC energies (Au+Au-collisions) and for Pb+Pb reactions at the LHC ($\sqrt s=5.5A$ TeV) are presented and potential observations by the STAR, PHENIX and ALICE experiments are discussed.

Abstract:Inclusive fragmentation of jets into charged particles has been studied in the UA1 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) pp̄ Collider at s = 540 GeV for jets having a transverse energy above 30 GeV. The observed fragmentation function is very similar to that seen in e+e−jets and is therefore indicative of similar hadronization processes for gluons and quarks. Scaling with the energy of the jet is valid to a good approximation, although slight deviations are suggested by the data. The average transverse momentum with respect to the jet axis for jets with ET > 30 GeV is 600 MeV/c for particles having z > 0.1 and increases slowly with the jet energy.
