Abstract:In the Twin Towers of Hanoi version of the well known Towers of Hanoi Problem there are two coupled sets of pegs. In each move, one chooses a pair of pegs in one of the sets and performs the only possible legal transfer of a disk between the chosen pegs (the smallest disk from one of the pegs is moved to the other peg), but also, simultaneously, between the corresponding pair of pegs in the coupled set (thus the same sequence of moves is always used in both sets). We provide upper and lower bounds on the length of the optimal solutions to problems of the following type. Given an initial and a final position of N disks in each of the coupled sets, what is the smallest number of moves needed to simultaneously obtain the final position from the initial one in each set? Our analysis is based on the use of a group, called Hanoi Towers group, of rooted ternary tree automorphisms, which models the original problem in such a way that the configurations on N disks are the vertices at level N of the tree and the action of the generators of the group represents the three possible moves between the three pegs. The twin version of the problem is analyzed by considering the action of Hanoi Towers group on pairs of vertices.

Abstract:The Tower of Hanoi game is a classical puzzle in recreational mathematics (Lucas 1883) which also has a strong record in pure mathematics. In a borderland between these two areas we find the characterization of the minimal number of moves, which is $2^n-1$, to transfer a tower of $n$ disks. But there are also other variations to the game, involving for example real number weights on the moves of the disks. This gives rise to a similar type of problem, but where the final score seeks to be optimized. We study extensions of the one-player setting to two players, invoking classical winning conditions in combinatorial game theory such as the player who moves last wins, or the highest score wins. Here we solve both these winning conditions on three heaps.

Abstract:As we all know, Hanoi Problem is a classical case of recursive algorithm in programming. In this paper, we study the problem in another way by numbering the peg from bottom to top with integer. Considering the relationship between disks and pegs, we design a new non-recursive solution to determine which disk is moved and which peg will be move to in each step. The algorithm is relatively simple and efficientive. We also discuss the optimization which is with scalability under certain conditions.

Abstract:The Tower of Hanoi problem is an ancient and interesting topic. In this paper, we presented an evolutionary algorithm approach for searching the solutions of the problem. We use a direct encoding and apply mutation only in the evolution. Experimental results are reported and show that the proposed method is capable of finding solutions for the problem of multiple pegs.

Abstract:Some of the algorithms for solving the Tower of Hanoi puzzle can be applied "with eyes closed" or "without memory". Here we survey the solution for the classical Tower of Hanoi that uses finite automata, as well as some variations on the original puzzle. In passing, we obtain a new result on morphisms generating the classical and the lazy Tower of Hanoi.

Abstract:We study the computational complexity of solving the following problem: Given a game g played on a finite directed graph G, output all nodes in G from which a specific player wins the game g. We provide algorithms for solving the above problem when the games have Büchi and parity winning conditions and the graph G is a tree with back-edges. The running time of the algorithm for Büchi games is O(min{r·m, l + m}) where m is the number of edges, l is the sum of the distances from the root to all leaves and the parameter r is bounded by the height of the tree. The algorithm for parity has a running time of O(l + m).

Abstract:The number of spanning trees of a graph is an important invariant related to topological and dynamic properties of the graph, such as its reliability, communication aspects, synchronization, and so on. However, the practical enumeration of spanning trees and the study of their properties remain a challenge, particularly for large networks. In this paper, we study the num- ber and degree distribution of the spanning trees in the Hanoi graph. We first establish recursion relations between the number of spanning trees and other spanning subgraphs of the Hanoi graph, from which we find an exact analytical expression for the number of spanning trees of the n-disc Hanoi graph. This result allows the calculation of the spanning tree entropy which is then compared with those for other graphs with the same average degree. Then, we introduce a vertex labeling which allows to find, for each vertex of the graph, its degree distribution among all possible spanning trees.

Abstract:This paper studies algorithms for deciding the winners of two-player games played on directed graphs. We focus on the case when the underlying graphs are trees with back-edges and provide both theoretical and experimental analysis of this class of games. In particular, we present an algorithm that solves Buchi games played on trees with back-edges in time O(min{r.m,l+m}) where m is the number of edges, l is the sum of the distances from the root to all leaves and the parameter r is bounded by the height of the tree. We also show that parity games played on trees with back-edges can be solved in time O(l + m).

Abstract:In this paper we consider positional games where the winning sets are tree universal graphs. Specifically, we show that in the unbiased Maker-Breaker game on the complete graph $K_n$, Maker has a strategy to occupy a graph which contains copies of all spanning trees with maximum degree at most $cn/\log(n)$, for a suitable constant $c$ and $n$ being large enough. We also prove an analogous result for Waiter-Client games. Both of our results show that the building player can play at least as good as suggested by the random graph intuition. Moreover, they improve on a special case of earlier results by Johannsen, Krivelevich, and Samotij as well as Han and Yang for Maker-Breaker games.

Nearly Optimal Minimax Tree Search?

Abstract:Knuth and Moore presented a theoretical lower bound on the number of leaves that any fixed-depth minimax tree-search algorithm traversing a uniform tree must explore, the so-called minimal tree. Since real-life minimax trees are not uniform, the exact size of this tree is not known for most applications. Further, most games have transpositions, implying that there exists a minimal graph which is smaller than the minimal tree. For three games (chess, Othello and checkers) we compute the size of the minimal tree and the minimal graph. Empirical evidence shows that in all three games, enhanced Alpha-Beta search is capable of building a tree that is close in size to that of the minimal graph. Hence, it appears game-playing programs build nearly optimal search trees. However, the conventional definition of the minimal graph is wrong. There are ways in which the size of the minimal graph can be reduced: by maximizing the number of transpositions in the search, and generating cutoffs using branches that lead to smaller search trees. The conventional definition of the minimal graph is just a left-most approximation. Calculating the size of the real minimal graph is too computationally intensive. However, upper bound approximations show it to be significantly smaller than the left-most minimal graph. Hence, it appears that game-playing programs are not searching as efficiently as is widely believed. Understanding the left-most and real minimal search graphs leads to some new ideas for enhancing Alpha-Beta search. One of them, enhanced transposition cutoffs, is shown to significantly reduce search tree size.

Abstract:We study a tree coloring model introduced by Guidon (2018), initially based on an analogy with a remote control system of a rail yard, seen as switches on a binary tree. For a given binary tree, we formalize the constraints on the coloring, in particular the distribution of the nodes among colors. Following Guidon, we are interested in balanced colorings i.e. colorings which minimize the maximum size of the subsets of the tree nodes distributed by color. With his method, we present balanced colorings for trees of height up to 7. But his method seems difficult to apply for trees of greater height. Also we present another method which gives solutions for arbitrarily large trees. We illustrate it with a balanced coloring for height 8. In the appendix, we give the exact formulas and the asymptotic behavior of the number of colorings as a function of the height of the tree.

Abstract:We will show how to implement binary decision tree traversal in the language of matrix computation. Our main contribution is to propose some equivalent algorithms of binary tree traversal based on a novel matrix representation of the hierarchical structure of the decision tree. Our key idea is to travel the binary decision tree by maximum inner product search. We not only implement decision tree methods without the recursive traverse but also delve into the partitioning nature of tree-based methods.

Beyond Value Iteration for Parity Games: Strategy Iteration with Universal Trees

Abstract:Parity games have witnessed several new quasi-polynomial algorithms since the breakthrough result of Calude et al. (STOC 2017). The combinatorial object underlying these approaches is a universal tree, as identified by Czerwiński et al. (SODA 2019). By proving a quasi-polynomial lower bound on the size of a universal tree, they have highlighted a barrier that must be overcome by all existing approaches to attain polynomial running time. This is due to the existence of worst case instances which force these algorithms to explore a large portion of the tree. As an attempt to overcome this barrier, we propose a strategy iteration framework which can be applied on any universal tree. It is at least as fast as its value iteration counterparts, while allowing one to take bigger leaps in the universal tree. Our main technical contribution is an efficient method for computing the least fixed point of 1-player games. This is achieved via a careful adaptation of shortest path algorithms to the setting of ordered trees. By plugging in the universal tree of Jurdziński and Lazić (LICS 2017), or the Strahler universal tree of Daviaud et al. (ICALP 2020), we obtain instantiations of the general framework that take time $O(mn^2\log n\log d)$ and $O(mn^2\log^3 n \log d)$ respectively per iteration.

Abstract:Let $G(V,E)$ be a directed graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. The edges $E$ of $G$ are divided into two types: $E_F$ and $E_P$. Each edge of $E_F$ has a fixed price. The edges of $E_P$ are the priceable edges and their price is not fixed a priori. Let $r$ be a vertex of $G$. For an assignment of prices to the edges of $E_P$, the revenue is given by the following procedure: select a shortest path tree $T$ from $r$ with respect to the prices (a tree of cheapest paths); the revenue is the sum, over all priceable edges $e$, of the product of the price of $e$ and the number of vertices below $e$ in $T$. Assuming that $k=|E_P|\ge 2$ is a constant, we provide a data structure whose construction takes $O(m+n\log^{k-1} n)$ time and with the property that, when we assign prices to the edges of $E_P$, the revenue can be computed in $(\log^{k-1} n)$. Abstract:A class of discrete-time, dynamic supergames played by infinitely many players on tree is studied. Each player plays a number of two-person games with her neighbors simultaneously and updates her strategy stochastically based on the information from her neighbors' strategies and the payoff she gets. Under the conditions of the pre-specified updating rules and the transition probabilities, the relevant strategy evolution process of the supersgame is proved to be a reversible Markov chain. The invariant Gibbsian measures which represent the long-run equilibrium plays with binary strategy and symmetric payoffs are obtained. They are well known Ising models on trees which exhibit phase transition phenomena in certain cases.

Abstract:We consider the following combinatorial two-player game: On the random tree arising from a branching process, each round one player (Breaker) deletes an edge and by that removes the descendant and all its progeny, while the other (Maker) fixates an edge to permanently secure it from deletion. Breaker has won once the tree's root is contained in a finite component, otherwise Maker wins by building an infinite path starting at the root. It will be analyzed both as a positional game (the tree is known to both players at the start) and with more restrictive levels of information (the players essentially explore the tree during the game). Reading the number of available edges for play as a random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ allows us to derive the winning probability of Breaker via fixed point equations in three natural information regimes. These results provide new insights into combinatorial game theory and random structures, with potential applications to network theory, algorithmic game design and probability theory.
