Abstract:In this note, we obtain a new result concluding when contact (+1/n)-surgery is overtwisted. We give a counterexample to a conjecture by James Conway on overtwistedness of manifolds obtained by contact surgery. We list some problems related to the contact surgery.

Abstract:In this note we show that $+1$-contact surgery on distinct Legendrian knots frequently produces contactomorphic manifolds. We also give examples where this happens for $-1$-contact surgery. As an amusing corollary we find overtwisted contact structures that contain a large number of distinct Legendrian knots with the same classical invariants and tight complements.

Abstract:In this paper, we study contact surgeries along Legendrian links in the standard contact 3-sphere. On one hand, we use algebraic methods to prove the vanishing of the contact Ozsváth-Szabó invariant for contact (+1)-surgery along certain Legendrian two-component links. The main tool is a link surgery formula for Heegaard Floer homology developed by Manolescu and Ozsváth. On the other hand, we use contact-geometric argument to show the overtwistedness of the contact 3-manifolds obtained by contact (+1)-surgeries along Legendrian two-component links whose two components are linked in some special configurations.

Abstract:In this paper, sufficient conditions for contact $(+1)$-surgeries along Legendrian knots in contact rational homology 3-spheres to have vanishing contact invariants or to be overtwisted are given. They can be applied to study the contact $(\pm1)$-surgeries along Legendrian links in the standard contact 3-sphere. We also obtain a sufficient condition for contact $(+1)$-surgeries along Legendrian two-component links in the standard contact 3-sphere to be overtwisted via their front projections.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the contact cosmetic surgery conjecture holds true for all non-trivial Legendrian knots, with the possible exception of Lagrangian slice knots. We also discuss the contact cosmetic surgeries on Legendrian unknots and make the surprising observation that there are some Legendrian unknots that have a contact surgery with no cosmetic pair, while all other contact surgeries are contactomorphic to infinitely many other contact surgeries on the knot.

Abstract:We execute Avdek's algorithm to find many algebraically overtwisted and tight $3$-manifolds by contact $+1$ surgeries. In particular, we show that a contact $1/k$ surgery on the standard contact $3$-sphere along any positive torus knot with the maximum Thurston-Bennequin invariant yields an algebraically overtwisted and tight $3$-manifold, where $k$ is a positive integer.

Abstract:We develop the details of a surgery theory for contact manifolds of arbitrary dimension via convex structures, extending the 3-dimensional theory developed by Giroux. The theory is analogous to that of Weinstein manifolds in symplectic geometry, with the key difference that the vector field does not necessarily have positive divergence everywhere. The surgery theory for contact manifolds contains the surgery theory for Weinstein manifolds via a sutured model for attaching critical points of low index. Using this sutured model, we show that the existence of convex structures on closed contact manifolds is guaranteed, a result equivalent to the existence of supporting Weinstein open book decompositions.

Abstract:We prove that for any pair of Legendrian representatives of the Chekanov-Eliashberg twist knots with different LOSS invariants, any negative rational contact $r$-surgery with $r\neq -1$ always gives rise to different contact 3-manifolds distinguished by their contact invariants. This gives the first examples of pairs ofLegendrian knots with the same classical invariants but distinct contact $r$-surgeries for all negative rational number $r$. We also generalize the statement from the twist knots to a certain families of two bridge knots.

Abstract:We produce the first examples of closed, tight contact 3-manifolds which become overtwisted after performing admissible transverse surgeries. Along the way, we clarify the relationship between admissible transverse surgery and Legendrian surgery. We use this clarification to study a new invariant of transverse knots - namely, the range of slopes on which admissible transverse surgery preserves tightness - and to provide some new examples of knot types which are not uniformly thick. Our examples also illuminate several interesting new phenomena, including the existence of hyperbolic, universally tight contact 3-manifolds whose Heegaard Floer contact invariants vanish (and which are not weakly fillable); and the existence of open books with arbitrarily high fractional Dehn twist coefficients whose compatible contact structures are not deformations of co-orientable taut foliations.

Abstract:Let $(M,\xi)$ be a contact 3-manifold. We present two new algorithms, the first of which converts an open book $(\Sigma,\Phi)$ supporting $(M,\xi)$ with connected binding into a contact surgery diagram. The second turns a contact surgery diagram for $(M,\xi)$ into a supporting open book decomposition. These constructions lead to a refinement of a result of Ding-Geiges, which states that every such $(M,\xi)$ may be obtained by contact surgery from $(S^{3},\xi_{std})$, as well as bounds on the support norm and genus of contact manifolds obtained by surgery in terms of classical link data. We then introduce Kirby moves called ribbon moves which use mapping class relations to modify contact surgery diagrams. Any two surgery diagrams of the same contact 3-manifold are related by a sequence of Legendrian isotopies and ribbon moves. As most of our results are computational in nature, a number of examples are analyzed.

This continues a long line of research and shows that there seems to be few underlying patterns to when a contact structure is Stein fillable or not.

Abstract:This article presents an alternate way to prove a result originally proven by Harvey, Kawamuro, and Plamenvskaya in \cite{HaKaPl}. We accomplish this by explicitly constructing an overtwisted disk in the $p$-fold cyclic branched cover of $S^3$ with the standard contact structure branched along a carefully selected transverse knot. Furthermore, by utilizing this construction of the overtwisted disk, we can see that the overtwisted disk is contained in the complement of the branch locus.

Abstract:For a nullhomologous Legendrian knot in a closed contact 3-manifold Y we consider a contact structure obtained by positive rational contact surgery. We prove that in this situation the Heegaard Floer contact invariant of Y is mapped by a surgery cobordism to the contact invariant of the result of contact surgery. In addition we characterize the spin-c structure on the cobordism that induces the relevant map. As a consequence we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the nonvanishing of the contact invariant after rational surgery when Y is the standard 3-sphere, generalizing previous results of Lisca-Stipsicz and Golla. In fact our methods allow direct calculation of the contact invariant in terms of the rational surgery mapping cone of Ozsváth and Szabó. The proof involves a construction called reducible open book surgery, which reduces in special cases to the capping-off construction studied by Baldwin.

Abstract:We study cosmetic contact surgeries along transverse knots in the standard contact 3-sphere, i.e. contact surgeries that yield again the standard contact 3-sphere. The main result is that we can exclude non-trivial cosmetic contact surgeries along all transverse knots not isotopic to the transverse unknot with self-linking number -1. As a corollary it follows that every transverse knot in the standard contact 3-sphere is determined by the contactomorphism type of its exteriors. Moreover, we give counterexamples to this for transverse links in the standard contact 3-sphere.

Abstract:We classify all contact structures with contact surgery number one on the Brieskorn sphere Sigma(2,3,11) with both orientations. We conclude that there exist infinitely many non-isotopic contact structures on each of the above manifolds which cannot be obtained by a single rational contact surgery from the standard tight contact 3-sphere. We further prove similar results for some lens spaces: We classify all contact structures with contact surgery number one on lens spaces of the form L(4m+3,4). Along the way, we present an algorithm and a formula for computing the Euler class of a contact structure from a general rational contact surgery description and classify which rational surgeries along Legendrian unknots are tight and which ones are overtwisted.

Abstract:We define relative Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a general gluing theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves for symplectic cutting and contact surgery. Then, we use our general gluing theory to study the change of GW-invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds tranform under flops and extremal transitions. We prove a complete formula for the change of GW-invariants of any genus transform under flop and a general type I extremal transition. Other extremal transition will be handled in a subsequent paper.

Abstract:A pair of surgeries on a knot is chirally cosmetic if they result in homeomorphic manifolds with opposite orientations. We find new obstructions to the existence of such surgeries coming from Heegaard Floer homology; in particular, we make use of immersed curve formulations of knot Floer homology and the corresponding surgery formula. As an application, we completely classify chirallly cosmetic surgeries on odd alternating pretzel knots, and we rule out such surgeries for a large class of Whitehead doubles. Furthermore, we rule out cosmetic surgeries for L-space knots along slopes with opposite signs.
Exotic Dehn twists on sums of two contact 3-manifolds

Abstract:We exhibit the first examples of exotic contactomorphisms with infinite order as elements of the contact mapping class group. These are given by certain Dehn twists on the separating sphere in a connected sum of two closed contact 3-manifolds. We detect these by a combination of hard and soft techniques. On the one hand, we make essential use of an invariant for families of contact structures which generalises the Kronheimer--Mrowka contact invariant in monopole Floer homology. We then exploit an h-principle for families of convex spheres in tight contact 3-manifolds, from which we establish a parametric version of Colin's decomposition theorem. As a further application, we also exhibit new exotic 1-parametric phenomena in overtwisted contact 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We prove the existence of a subclass of overtwisted contact structures, called strongly overtwisted, on a 3-manifold that satisfy a complete h-principle without prescribing the contact structures over any subset of the 3-manifold. As a consequence, the homotopy type of the space of overtwisted disk embeddings into a strongly overtwisted contact 3-manifold is determined. A complete h-principle for a subclass of loose Legendrians is also derived from the main result. In general, the method allows us to deduce an h-principle for overtwisted disks that are fixed near the boundary in an arbitrary overtwisted contact 3-manifold.

A note on orientation-reversing distance one surgeries on non-null-homologous knots

Abstract:We show that there are no distance one surgeries on non-null-homologous knots in $M$ that yield $-M$ ($M$ with opposite orientation) if $M$ is a 3-manifold obtained by a Dehn surgery on a knot $K$ in $S^{3}$, such that the order of its first homology is divisible by $9$ but is not divisible by $27$. As an application, we show several knots, including the $(2,9)$ torus knot, do not have chirally cosmetic bandings. This simplifies a proof of the result first proven by Yang; the $(2,k)$ torus knot $(k>1)$ has a chirally cosmetic banding if and only if $k=5$.
