Abstract:The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is the premier telescope for sensitive, high-resolution observations at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. The array consists of fifty 12-m diameter antennas that can be reconfigured to baselines as long as 16 km, twelve 7-m antennas that sample the short visibility spacings, and four 12-m antennas that provide total power capabilities for spectral line and continuum observations. Located in the Atacama desert in northern Chile at an elevation of 5000 m on the Chajnantour plateau, the ALMA site provides excellent observing conditions with low precipitable water vapor. The large number of antennas, the high-altitude site, and excellent receivers with low-noise performance provide an extremely sensitive, flexible instrument for submillimeter imaging.

Abstract:ALMA has already produced many impressive and scientifically compelling results. However, continuous technical upgrades and development are key for ALMA to continue to lead astronomical research through the 2020-2030 decade and beyond. The East Asia ALMA development program consists of the execution of short term projects, and the planning and initial studies for longer term developments that are essential for future upgrades. We present an overview of all these ongoing East Asia ALMA development projects and upgrade studies, which aim to maintain and even increase the outstanding scientific impact of ALMA in the near future and over the coming decades.

Abstract:The present document outlines a roadmap for future developments that will significantly expand ALMA's capabilities and enable it to produce even more exciting science in the coming decades. The proposed developments are motivated by the groundbreaking results achieved by ALMA during its first five years of operation. The roadmap described here is based on input on new scientific directions and technical feasibility of future developments from the ALMA Science Advisory Committee (ASAC), the community, and technical documents. The Working Group recommends that the top development priority, based on scientific merit and technical feasibility, is to broaden the receiver IF bandwidth by at least a factor two, and to upgrade the associated electronics and correlator. These developments will advance a wide range of scientific studies by significantly reducing the time required for blind redshift surveys, chemical spectral scans, and deep continuum surveys. In order of scientific priority, receiver upgrades are recommended for intermediate (200-425 GHz), low (< 200 GHz), and high (> 425 GHz) frequencies. The Working Group recommends that the receiver and throughput developments proceed as soon as fiscally and technically feasible. As a first step, a technical and scientific group should be formed to formalize the top-level requirements. A team of systems engineers should then be charged with flowing these requirements down to the subsystems to form a consistent new set of minimum requirements, which future development projects would have to meet. Given that upgrading the throughput will impact many ALMA subsystems, the Working Group recommends that a team within ALMA be charged with coordinating and monitoring these developments. Abstract:The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international partnership of Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile, is the largest astronomical project in existence. While ALMA's capabilities are ramping up, Early Science observations have started. The ALMA Archive is at the center of the operations of the telescope array and is designed to manage the 200 TB of data that will be taken each year, once the observatory is in full operations. We briefly describe design principles. The second part of this paper focuses on how astronomy is likely to evolve as the amount and complexity of data taken grows. We argue that in the future observatories will compete for astronomers to work with their data, that observatories will have to reorient themselves to from providing good data only to providing an excellent end-to-end user-experience with all its implications, that science-grade data-reduction pipelines will become an integral part of the design of a new observatory or instrument and that all this evolution will have a deep impact on how astronomers will do science. We show how ALMA's design principles are in line with this paradigm.

Abstract:The ALMA telescope has been producing ground-breaking science since 2011, but it is mostly based on technology from the 2000s. In order to keep ALMA competitive in the coming decade, timely updates are necessary in order to further improve the science output of the telescope in the coming decades. In this contribution, we will present the status of the different projects and studies which constitute the contribution of East Asia to the ALMA Development Program, such as the production of band 1 receivers, the development of band 2 receivers optics, and of the ACA spectrometer. We will also update on the different hardware and software studies towards the implementation of the ALMA Development Roadmap and additional opportunities.

Abstract:As the next decade approaches, it is once again time for the US astronomical community to assess its investment priorities for the coming decade on the ground and in space. This report, created to aid NOAO in its planning for the 2020 Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics, reviews the outcome of the previous Decadal Survey (Astro2010); describes the themes that emerged from the 2018 NOAO community planning workshop "NOAO Community Needs for Science in the 2020s"; and based on the above, offers thoughts for the coming review. We find that a balanced set of investments in small- to large-scale initiatives is essential to a sustainable future, based on the experience of previous decades. While large facilities are the "value" investments that are guaranteed to produce compelling science and discoveries, smaller facilities are the "growth stocks" that are likely to deliver the biggest science bang per buck, sometimes with outsize returns. Investments in data-intensive missions also have benefits to society beyond the science they deliver. By training scientists who are well equipped to use their data science skills to solve problems in the public or private sector, astronomy can provide a valuable service to society by contributing to a data-capable workforce.

Abstract:ALMA has been demonstrating its exceptional capabilities with unprecedented scientific results achieved over the past six years of operation. To keep ALMA as a leading-edge telescope, it is essential to continue technical upgrades and development of new potential. While our future development programs have already achieved remarkable technological breakthroughs at the level of front-end receivers, we are discussing the upgrades of the analog and digital backend and the correlator. Abstract:ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) is the world's largest ground-based facility for observations in the millimeter/submillimeter regime. One of ALMA's outstanding characteristics is the large effort dedicated to the quality assurance (QA) of the calibrated and imaged data products offered to the astronomical community. The Data Management Group (DMG), in charge of the data processing, review, and delivery of the ALMA data, consists of approximately 60 experts in data reduction, from the ALMA Regional Centers (ARCs) and the Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO), distributed in fourteen countries. With a throughput of more than 3,000 datasets per year, meeting the goal of delivering the pipeline-able data products within 30 days after data acquisition is a huge challenge. This paper presents (a) the history of data processing at ALMA, (b) the challenges our team had and is still facing, (c) the methodology followed to mitigate the operational risks, (d) the ongoing optimization initiatives, (e) the current data processing status, (f) the strategy which is being followed so that, in a few Cycles from now, a team of approximately 10 data reducers (DRs) at JAO can process and review some 80% of the datasets collected during an observing cycle, and, finally, (g) the important role of the ARCs for processing the remaining datasets.

Abstract:Submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths provide a unique view of the Universe, from the gas and dust that fills and surrounds galaxies to the chromosphere of our own Sun. Current single-dish facilities have presented a tantalising view of the brightest (sub-)mm sources, and interferometers have provided the exquisite resolution necessary to analyse the details in small fields, but there are still many open questions that cannot be answered with current facilities. In this report we summarise the science that is guiding the design of the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST). We demonstrate how tranformational advances in topics including star formation in high redshift galaxies, the diffuse circumgalactic medium, Galactic ecology, cometary compositions and solar flares motivate the need for a 50m, single-dish telescope with a 1-2 degree field of view and a new generation of highly multiplexed continuum and spectral cameras. AtLAST will have the resolution to drastically lower the confusion limit compared to current single-dish facilities, whilst also being able to rapidly map large areas of the sky and detect extended, diffuse structures. Its high sensitivity and large field of view will open up the field of submillimeter transient science by increasing the probability of serendipitous detections. Finally, the science cases listed here motivate the need for a highly flexible operations model capable of short observations of individual targets, large surveys, monitoring programmes, target of opportunity observations and coordinated observations with other observatories. AtLAST aims to be a sustainable, upgradeable, multipurpose facility that will deliver orders of magnitude increases in sensitivity and mapping speeds over current and planned submillimeter observatories.

A Roadmap for Canadian Submillimetre Astronomy

Abstract:We survey the present landscape in submillimetre astronomy for Canada and describe a plan for continued engagement in observational facilities to ~2020. Building on Canada's decadal Long Range Plan process, we emphasize that continued involvement in a large, single-dish facility is crucial given Canada's substantial investment in ALMA and numerous PI-led submillimetre experiments. In particular, we recommend: i) an extension of Canadian participation in the JCMT until at least the unique JCMT Legacy Survey program is able to realize the full scientific potential provided by the world-leading SCUBA-2 instrument; and ii) involvement of the entire Canadian community in CCAT, with a large enough share in the partnership for Canadian astronomers to participate at all levels of the facility. We further recommend continued participation in ALMA development, involvement in many focused PI-led submillimetre experiments, and partnership in SPICA.

Abstract:While the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is a uniquely powerful telescope, its impact in certain fields of astrophysics has been limited by observatory policies rather than the telescope's innate technical capabilities. In particular, several observatory policies present challenges for observations of variable, mobile, and/or transient sources --- collectively referred to here as "time-domain" observations. In this whitepaper we identify some of these policies, describe the scientific applications they impair, and suggest changes that would increase ALMA's science impact in Cycle 6 and beyond. Updates to ALMA Site Properties: using the ESO-Allegro Phase RMS database -- ALMA Memo 624

Abstract:We present a long-term overview of the atmospheric phase stability at the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) site, using >5 years of data, that acts as the successor to the studies summarized two decades ago by Evans et al 2003. Importantly, we explore the atmospheric variations, the `phase RMS', and associated metadata of over 17000 accrued ALMA observations taken since Cycle 3 (2015) by using the Bandpass calibrator source scans. We indicate the temporal phase RMS trends for average baseline lengths of 500, 1000, 5000, and 10000m, in contrast to the old stability studies that used a single 300m baseline phase monitor system. At the ALMA site, on the Chajnantor plateau, we report the diurnal variations and monthly changes in the phase RMS on ALMA relevant baselines lengths, measured directly from data, and we reaffirm such trends in atmospheric transmission (via Precipitable Water Vapour - PWV). We confirm that day observations have respectively higher phase RMS and PWV in contrast to night, while the monthly variations show Chilean winter (June - August) providing the best, high-frequency and long-baseline observing conditions - low (stable) phase RMS and low PWV. Yet, not all good phase stability condition occur when the PWV is low. Measurements of the phase RMS as a function of short timescales, 30 to 240s, that tie with typical target source scan times, and as a function of baseline length indicate that phase variations are smaller for short timescales and baselines and larger for longer timescales and baselines. We illustrate that fast-switching phase-referencing techniques, that allow short target scan times, could work well in reducing the phase RMS to suitable levels specifically for high-frequencies (Band 8, 9 and 10), long-baselines, and the two combined.

Abstract:The scientific impact of a facility is the most important measure of its success. Monitoring and analysing the scientific return can help to modify and optimise operations and adapt to the changing needs of scientific research. The methodology that we have developed to monitor the scientific productivity of the ALMA Observatory, as well as the first results, are described. We focus on the outcome of the first cycle (Cycle 0) of ALMA Early Science operations. Despite the fact that only two years have passed since the completion of Cycle 0 and operations have already changed substantially, this analysisconfirms the effectiveness of the underlying concepts. We find that ALMA is fulfilling its promise as a transformational facility for the observation of the Universe in the submillimetre.

Abstract:These lecture notes provide an introduction to mm/submm extragalactic astronomy, focused on AGN studies, with the final goal of preparing students to their future exploitation of the ALMA capabilities. I first provide an overview of the current results obtained through mm/submm observations of galaxies and AGNs, both local and at high redshift. Then I summarize the main mm/submm facilities that are currently available. ALMA is then presented with a general description and by providing some details on its observing capabilities. Finally, I discuss some of the scientific goals that will be achievable with ALMA in extragalactic astronomy, and for AGN studies in particular.

Abstract:The Submillimeter Array (SMA) is an array of 8 antennas operating at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths on Maunakea, Hawaii, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Taiwan. Over the past several years, we have been preparing a major upgrade to the SMA that will replace the aging original receiver cryostats and receiver cartridges with all new cryostats and new 230 and 345 GHz receiver designs. This wideband upgrade (wSMA) will also include significantly increased instantaneous bandwidth, improved sensitivity, and greater capabilities for dual frequency observations. In this paper, we will describe the wSMA receiver upgrade and status, as well as the future upgrades that will be enabled by the deployment of the wSMA receivers.

Abstract:The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array remains the largest mm radio interferometer observatory world-wide. It is now conducting its 11th observing cycle. In our previous paper presented at this conference series in 2020, we outlined a number of possible improvements to the ALMA end-to-end observing and data processing procedures which could further optimize the uv coverage and thus the image quality while at the same time improving the observing efficiency. Here we report an update of our results refining our proposed adjustments to the scheduling and quality assurance processes. In particular we present new results on ways to assess the uv coverage of a given observation efficiently, methods to define and measure the maximum recoverable angular scale, and on the robustness of the deconvolution in the final interferometric imaging process w.r.t. defects in the uv coverage. Finally we present the outline of a design for integrating uv coverage assessment into the control and processing loop of observation scheduling. The results are applicable to all radio interferometers with more than approx. 10 antennas.

Abstract:Sub-mm and mm wavelengths provide a unique view of the Universe, from the gas and dust that fills and surrounds galaxies to the chromosphere of our own Sun. How do structures interact with their environments? What does the time-varying (sub-)mm sky look like? In order to make major advances on these questions and others, what is needed now is a facility capable of rapidly mapping the sky spatially, spectrally, and temporally, which can only be done by a high throughput, single-dish observatory. An extensive design study for this new facility is currently being undertaken. In this paper, we focus on the key science drivers and the requirements they place on the observatory. As a 50m single dish telescope with a 1-2° field of view, the strength of the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST) is in science where a large field of view, highly multiplexed instrumentation and sensitivity to faint large-scale structure is important. AtLAST aims to be a sustainable, upgradeable, multipurpose facility that will deliver orders of magnitude increases in sensitivity and mapping speeds over current and planned telescopes.

Abstract:The past decade began with the first light of ALMA and will end at the start of the new era of hyperdimensional astrophysics. Our community-wide movement toward highly multiwavelength and multidimensional datasets has enabled immense progress in each science frontier identified by the 2010 Decadal Survey, particularly with regard to black hole feedback and the cycle of baryons in galaxies. Facilities like ALMA and the next generation of integral field unit (IFU) spectrographs together enable mapping the physical conditions and kinematics of warm ionized and cold molecular gas in galaxies in unprecedented detail (Fig. 1). JWST's launch at the start of the coming decade will push this capability to the rest-frame UV at redshifts z > 6, mapping the birth of stars in the first galaxies at cosmic dawn. Understanding of their subsequent evolution, however, now awaits an ability to map the processes that transform galaxies directly, rather than the consequences of those processes in isolation. In this paper, we argue that doing so requires an equivalent revolution in spatially resolved spectroscopy for the hot plasma that pervades galaxies, the atmospheres in which they reside, and the winds that are the engines of their evolution.

ALMA Band 9 upgrade: a feasibility study

Abstract:We present the results of a study on the feasibility of upgrading the existing ALMA Band 9 receivers (602-720 GHz). In the current configuration, each receiver is a dual channel heterodyne system capable of detecting orthogonally polarized signals through the use of a wire grid and a compact arrangement of mirrors. The main goals of the study are the upgrade of the mixer architecture from Double-Sideband (DSB) to Sideband-separating (2SB), the extension of the IF and RF bandwidth, and the analysis of the possibilities of improving the polarimetric performance. We demonstrate the performance of 2SB mixers both in the lab and on-sky with the SEPIA660 receiver at APEX, which shows image rejection ratios exceeding 20 dB and can perform successful observations of several spectral lines close to the band edges. The same architecture in ALMA Band 9 would lead to an increase in the effective spectral sensitivity and a gain of a factor two in observation time. We set up also an electromagnetic model of the optics to simulate the polarization performance of the receivers, which is currently limited by the cross-polar level and the beam squint, i.e. pointing mismatch between the two polarizations. We present the results of the simulations compared to the measurements and we conclude that the use of a polarizing grid is the main responsible of the limitations.
