Abstract:We investigate the field and spin-momentum coupling of edge plasmons hosted by general two-dimensional materials and identify sweet spots depending on the polarisation plane, ellipticity and the position of an electric dipole relative to the plane and edge. Exciting the dipole at these sweet spots by propagating light leads to uni-directional propagating edge plasmons or edge modes are totally suppressed. We also extent previous approximate treatments [A. Fetter Phys. Rev. B 32, 7676 (1985)] to include anisotropy and hyperbolic systems, elucidating its predictions for the existence of edge modes. A thorough assessment of the approximate description is carried out, comparing its spin-momentum coupling features in the near field with exact results from Wiener-Hopf techniques. Simulations are also performed confirming the overall picture. Our results shed new light on the quest of chiral plasmonics in 2D materials and should be relevant for future experiments.

Abstract:A three-level system with pumped electric-dipole allowed transition for incoherent-gain negative permittivity is suggested in order to realize dispersion-sensitive surface plasmon wave. The present surface wave modes occurring at an interface between an incoherent-gain negative-permittivity “plasmonic” medium (e.g., a semiconductor-quantum-dot material) and an ordinary dielectric can be amplified due to population transfer in the three-level system of the negative-permittivity medium. The issues of complex phase constant and the attenuation coefficients in the adjacent media are considered for addressing the problem of loss compensation of surface plasmon wave. The effect of incoherent-gain amplification exhibited by the dispersion-sensitive surface plasmon wave can be utilized for designing new quantum optical and photonic devices, e.g., photonic transistors and logic gates.

Abstract:We consider theoretically, using the random phase approximation (RPA), low-energy intrinsic plasmons for two-dimensional (2D) systems obeying Dirac-like linear chiral dispersion with the chemical potential set precisely at the charge neutral Dirac point. The “intrinsic Dirac plasmon” energy has the characteristic q dispersion in the 2D wave vector q, but vanishes as T in temperature for both monolayer and bilayer graphene. The intrinsic plasmon becomes overdamped for a fixed q as T→0 since the level broadening (i.e., the decay of the plasmon into electron-hole pairs due to Landau damping) increases as 1/T as temperature decreases, however, the plasmon mode remains well defined at any fixed T (no matter how small) as q→0. Abstract:We investigate through analytic calculations the surface plasmon dispersion relation for monolayer graphene sheets and a separated parallel pair of graphene monolayers. An approximate form for the dispersion relation for the monolayer case was derived, which was shown to be highly accurate and offers intuition to the properties of the supported plasmon mode. For parallel graphene pairs separated by small gaps, the dispersion relation of the surface plasmon splits into two branches, one with a symmetric and the other with an antisymmetric magnetic field across the gap. For the symmetric (magnetic field) branch, the confinement may be improved at reduced absorption loss over a wide spectrum, unlike conventional SP modes supported on metallic surfaces that are subjected to the trade-off between loss and confinement. This symmetric mode becomes strongly suppressed for very small separations however. On the other hand, its antisymmetric counterpart exhibits reduced absorption loss for very small separations or long wavelengths, serving as a complement to the symmetric branch. Our results suggest that graphene plasmon structures could be promising for waveguiding and sensing applications in the mid-infrared and terahertz frequencies.

Abstract:Characteristics of surface modes at the interface between an isotropic medium and an indefinite medium that has a dispersion relation of hyperbolic form are studied. Four cases for the isotropic medium, including normal, left-handed, magnetic (with negative permeability), and metallic media, are considered. The conditions for the existence of surface modes in each case are analyzed in detail, and the results are expressed explicitly, indicating that the existence of surface modes is determined by the nature of the indefinite medium as well as the orientation of the boundary surface of this anisotropic medium. The energy flows associated with the surface modes are also discussed.

Abstract:Recent progress on anisotropic 2D materials brings new technologies for directional guidance of hyperbolic plasmons. Here, we investigate the plasmonic modes in twisted bilayer 2D materials (e.g., black phosphorous). Calculated dispersion curves show that two hyperbolas split as the twisted angle increases. The topological transition from closed ellipses to open hyperbolas is achieved by varying the frequency, indicating switching between highly directional and omnidirectional plasmons. These findings will provide potential applications of anisotropic 2D materials in the design of tunable field effect transistors and waveguides.

Abstract:We consider single-layer plane graphene with electronic excitations described by the Dirac equation. Using a known representation of the polarization tensor in terms of the spinor loop we show the existence of surface modes, i.e., of undamped in time excitations of the \elm field, propagating along the graphene. These show up in the TE polarization and exist at zero temperature.

Abstract:The phenomenon of spin-dependent quantum scattering in two-dimensional (2D) pseudospin-1/2 Dirac materials leading to a relativistic quantum chimera was recently uncovered. We investigate spin-dependent Dirac electron optics in 2D pseudospin-1 Dirac materials, where the energy-band structure consists of a pair of Dirac cones and a flat band. In particular, with a suitable combination of external electric fields and a magnetic exchange field, electrons with a specific spin orientation (e.g., spin-down) can be trapped in a class of long-lived edge modes, generating resonant scattering. The spin-dependent edge states are a unique feature of flat-band Dirac materials and have no classical correspondence. However, electrons with the opposite spin (i.e., spin up) undergo conventional quantum scattering with a classical correspondence, which can be understood in the framework of Dirac electron optics. A consequence is that the spin-down electrons produce a large scattering probability with broad scattering angle distribution in both near- and far-field regions, while the spin-up electrons display the opposite behavior. Such characteristically different behaviors of the electrons with opposite spins lead to spin polarization that can be as high as nearly 100%.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the graphene metasurfaces (GSPs) are crucial to develop a series of novel functional devices that can merge the well-established plasmonics and novel nanomaterials. Dispersion theory on GSPs is an important aspect, which can provide a basic understanding of propagating waves and further guidance for potential applications based on graphene metamaterials. In this paper, the dispersion theory and its modal characteristics of GSPs on double-layer graphene metasurfaces consisting of the same upper and lower graphene micro-ribbon arrays deposited on the dielectric medium are presented. In order to obtain its dispersion expressions of GSP mode on the structure, an analytical approach is provided by directly solving the Maxwell’s equations in each region and then applying periodical conductivity boundary onto the double interfaces. The obtained dispersion expressions show that GSPs split into two newly symmetric and antisymmetric modes compared to that on the single graphene metasurface. Further, the resultant dispersion relation and its propagating properties as a function of some important physical parameters, such as spacer, ribbon width, and substrate, are treated and investigated in the Terahertz band, signifying great potentials in constructing various novel graphene-based plasmonic devices, such as deeply sub-wavelength waveguides, lenses, sensors, emitters, etc.

Dispersion of guided modes in two-dimensional split ring lattices

Abstract:We present a semi-analytical point-dipole method that uses Ewald lattice summation to find the dispersion relation of guided plasmonic and bianisotropic modes in metasurfaces composed of 2D periodic lattices of arbitrarily strongly scattering magneto-electric dipole scatterers. This method takes into account all retarded electrodynamic interactions as well as radiation damping selfconsistently. As illustration we analyze the dispersion of plasmon nanorod lattices, and of 2D split ring resonator lattices. Plasmon nanorod lattices support transverse and longitudinal in-plane electric modes. Scatterers that have an in-plane electric and out-of-plane magnetic polarizability, but without intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling, result in two bands that are mixtures of the bands of electric-only and magnetic-only lattices. Thereby bianisotropy through mutual coupling, in absence of building-block bianisotropy, is evident. Once strong bi-anisotropy is included in each building block, the Bloch modes become even more strongly magnetoelectric. Our results are important to understand spatial dispersion and bianisotropy of metasurface and metamaterial designs.

Thermal conductance of an Edge mode

Abstract:Thermoelectric conductance of an edge mode is investigated. The edge modes of a $2D $ and $3D$ two band model with parabolic dispersion is considered. For the the one dimensional non interacting fermions the thermal conductivity computed agrees with the result known from $Bosonization$ computations. In the presence of a magnetic field, backscattering is allowed and controls the value of the thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity is obtained from the continuity equation of thermal current energy conservation. The thermal conductivity is computed introducing the $Scattering$ matrix for particles and anti-particles. At finite temperatures the backscattering is allowed, the electric conductance, the thermoelectric conductance and the thermal conductance decrease with the increase of the magnetic field. At finite temperatures, weak localization effects are small and can be ignored. We confirm the experimental results in a magnetic field for a $3D$ Topological Insulator. An experimental set-up was proposed to test our theory.

Multivalued dispersion equation for plasmon-surface optical phonon coupling in graphene/polar substrate system

Abstract:Dispersion equations are a common paradigm of collective excitation physics. However, in some systems, dispersion equations contain multivalued functions and their solutions are ambiguous. As an example, we consider graphene on a polar substrate where Dirac plasmons are coupled with surface optical phonons. The dispersion equation for this system contains square-root singularity. Using the initial value problem resolves this uncertainty and gives a unique solution. Particularly, we found that lower plasmon-phonon mode, which in terms of dispersion can have a good quality factor, is almost absent in excitation spectra. The physical reason and experimental evidence of the mode collapse are discussed.

Abstract:We have calculated the dynamical polarization, plasmons and damping rates in semi-Dirac bands (SDB's) with zero band gap and half-linear, half-parabolic low-energy spectrum. The obtained plasmon dispersions are strongly anisotropic and demonstrate some crucial features of both two-dimensional electron gas and graphene. Such gapless energy dispersions lead to a localized area of undamped and low-damped plasmons in a limited range of the frequencies and wave vectors. The calculated plasmon branches demonstrate an increase of their energies for a finite tilting of the band structure and a fixed Fermi level which could be used as a signature of a specific tilted spectrum in a semi-Dirac band.

Abstract:Collective modes of doped two-dimensional crystalline materials, namely graphene, MoS$_2$ and phosphorene, both monolayer and bilayer structures, are explored using the density functional theory simulations together with the random phase approximation. The many-body dielectric functions of the materials are calculated using an {\it ab initio} based model involving material-realistic physical properties. Having calculated the electron energy-loss, we calculate the collective modes of each material considering the in-phase and out-of-phase modes for bilayer structures. Furthermore, owing to many band structures and intreband transitions, we also find high-energy excitations in the systems. We explain that the material-specific dielectric function considering the polarizability of the crystalline material such as MoS$_2$ are needed to obtain realistic plasmon dispersions. For each material studied here, we find different collective modes and describe their physical origins.

Higher-order Dirac Fermions in Three Dimensions

Abstract:Relativistic massless Weyl and Dirac fermions exhibit the isotropic and linear dispersion relations to preserve the Pioncare symmetry, the most fundamental symmetry in high energy physics. In solids, the counterparts of the Pioncare symmetry are crystallographic symmetries, and hence, it is natural to explore generalizations of Dirac and Weyl fermions compatible with their crystallographic symmetries and then the new physics coming along with them. Here, we study an important kind of generalization, namely massless Dirac fermions with higher-order dispersion relations protected by crystallographic symmetries in three-dimensional nonmagnetic systems. We perform a systematic search over all 230 space groups with time-reversal symmetry and spin-orbit coupling considered. We find that the order of dispersion cannot be higher than three, i.e., only the quadratic and cubic Dirac points (QDPs and CDPs) are possible. We discover previously unknown classes of higher-order Dirac points, including the chiral QDPs with Chern numbers of +/- 4 and the QDPs/CDPs without centrosymmetry. Especially the chiral QDPs feature four extensive surface Fermi arcs and four chiral Landau bands and hence leads to observable signatures in spectroscopic and transport experiments. We further show that these higher-order Dirac points represent parent phases for other exotic topological structures. Via controlled symmetry breaking, QDPs and CDPs can be transformed into double Weyl points, triple Weyl points, charge-2 Dirac points or Weyl loops. Using first-principles calculations, we also identify possible material candidates, including alpha-TeO2 and YRu4B4, which realize the predicted nodal structures.

Abstract:We study theoretically the dispersion of plasmonic honeycomb lattices and find Dirac spectra for both dipole and quadrupole modes. Zigzag edge states derived from Dirac points are found in ribbons of these honeycomb plasmonic lattices. The zigzag edge states for out-of-plane dipole modes are closely analogous to the electronic ones in graphene nanoribbons. The edge states for in-plane dipole modes and quadrupole modes, however, have rather unique characters due to the vector nature of the plasmonic excitations. The conditions for the existence of plasmonic edge states are derived analytically.
Controlling plasmon modes and damping in buckled two-dimensional material open systems

Abstract:Full ranges of both hybrid plasmon-mode dispersions and their damping are studied systematically by our recently developed mean-field theory in open systems involving a conducting substrate and a two-dimensional (2D) material with a buckled honeycomb lattice, such as silicene, germanene, and a group \rom{4} dichalcogenide as well. In this hybrid system, the single plasmon mode for a free-standing 2D layer is split into one acoustic-like and one optical-like mode, leading to a dramatic change in the damping of plasmon modes. In comparison with gapped graphene, critical features associated with plasmon modes and damping in silicene and molybdenum disulfide are found with various spin-orbit and lattice asymmetry energy bandgaps, doping types and levels, and coupling strengths between 2D materials and the conducting substrate. The obtained damping dependence on both spin and valley degrees of freedom is expected to facilitate measuring the open-system dielectric property and the spin-orbit coupling strength of individual 2D materials. The unique linear dispersion of the acoustic-like plasmon mode introduces additional damping from the intraband particle-hole modes which is absent for a free-standing 2D material layer, and the use of molybdenum disulfide with a large bandgap simultaneously suppresses the strong damping from the interband particle-hole modes.

Abstract:Based on first-principles calculations we show that the two-dimensional pentagonal (pt) structures, the compositions of pt-BN2, pt-C, and pt-Fe2S, are stable. As a common feature, they are composed of 3 components: 2 stretched honeycomb sublattices and 1 square sublattice, conferring flexibility of tailoring the properties peculiar to the graphene. Although the Dirac dispersion relation is removed in metallic pt-BN2 and insulating pt-C due to the hybridization of two honeycomb sublattices, it survives in pt-Fe2S because of the suppression of such hybridization between different spins. As a result, in the dispersion relation of pt-Fe2S spin-polarized and anisotropic Dirac cones occur. We suggest that such type of dispersion relation can be used to produce spin-filter effect by applying electric bias in a specific direction.

Abstract:We show that a wide class of quantum systems with translational invariance can host dispersionless, soliton-like, wave packets. We focus on the setting where the effective, two-dimensional Hamiltonian acquires the form of the Dirac operator. The proposed framework for construction of the dispersionless wave packets is illustrated on silicene-like systems with topologically nontrivial effective mass. Our analytical predictions are accompanied by a numerical analysis and possible experimental realizations are discussed.

Plasmon-phonon Strongly-Coupled Mode in Epitaxial Graphene

Abstract:We report the dispersion measurements, using angle-resolved reflection electron-energy-loss-spectroscopy (AREELS), on two-dimensional (2D) plasmons in single and multilayer graphene which couple strongly to surface optical phonon (FK phonon) modes of silicon carbide substrate. The coupled modes show discrete dispersion behaviors in the single and bilayer graphene. With increasing graphene layers on SiC(0001), a transition from plasmon-like dispersion to phonon-like dispersion is observed. For plasmon-like modes, the dispersion is strongly damped by electron-hole pair excitations at entering single-particle continuum, while phonon-like mode is undamped. In the region free of coupling, the graphene 2D plasmon exhibits acoustic behavior with linear dispersion with slope and damping determined by the Fermi surface topology.
