Abstract:Graphene is a rising star in nonlinear optics due to its saturable absorption and giant Kerr nonlinearity, these properties are useful in digital optics based on optical nonlinear devices. However, practical applications require large optical nonlinearities and these are inherently limited by the interaction length of atomically thin graphene. Here, we demonstrate optical bistability in a Fabry Perot cavity containing monolayer and bilayer graphene which have been restructured to form nanobubbles. We find that graphene nanobubble can act as a new type of optical nonlinear media due to its vertical side wall as well as added curvature, which enable strong non linear dispersive effects leading to a large optically induced phase change. Unlike thermally induced bistability, the all optical switching between two transmission states happens within a time scale of tens of nanoseconds. Nanobubble based optical devices with intrinsic optical nonlinearity help to overcome the optical path length limitation of atomically thin two dimensional films and allow us to explore the promise of using such elements as the building block of digital all-optical circuitry.

Abstract:Although a relatively new area of nanoscience, nonlinear plasmonics has become a fertile ground for the development and testing of new ideas pertaining to light–matter interaction under intense field conditions, ideas that have found a multitude of applications in surface science, active photonic nanodevices, near-field optical microscopy, and nonlinear integrated photonics. In this review, we survey the latest developments in nonlinear plasmonics in three-dimensional (metallic) and two-dimensional (graphene) nanostructures and offer an outlook on future developments in this field of research. In particular, we discuss the main theoretical concepts, experimental methods, and computational tools that are used together in modern nonlinear plasmonics to explore in an integrated manner nonlinear optical properties of metallic and graphene based nanostructures.

Abstract:This article gives a brief overview of the linear and nonlinear optical response of graphene and its applications. Graphene exhibits unique physical properties. The charge carriers in graphene follow the relativistic massless Dirac equation; thus, they are known as the Dirac fermions. These Dirac fermions in graphene exhibit peculiar linear band structure at the Dirac point in the first Brillouin zone. These carriers exhibit novel linear and nonlinear optical properties in the presence of an intense electromagnetic field. The unique optical properties (linear and nonlinear) are a consequence of the unusual low-energy electronic band structure of graphene. The linear and nonlinear optical response of graphene can be tuned in the terahertz regime by the application of magnetic field. The uniqueness of graphene is shown by different findings in nonlinear optics such as four-wave mixing, saturation and reverse saturation absorption, two-photon absorption and optical limiting, among others. Therefore, the present review article describes the recent development in the field of linear and nonlinear optics of graphene. The different applications of graphene in the context of optics have been highlighted.

Abstract:All‐optical switching in graphene nanobubbles is demonstrated in this work. Thermally stressing graphene to form an array of nanobubbles allows a large optical phase shift to be obtained due to their vertical side walls and added curvature. Graphene nanobubbles offer a new and promising type of optical nonlinear medium to overcome the optical path length limitation of atomically thin two‐dimensional films, and enable exploration of such elements as the building blocks of digital all‐optical circuitry.

Abstract:We explore the ultrafast optical response of graphene subjected to intense (∼106 V/cm) local (∼10 nm) electric fields. Nanoscale gating of graphene is achieved using a voltage-biased, SrTiO3-based conductive nanowire junction "written" directly under the graphene and isolated from it by an insulating ultrathin (<2 nm) LaAlO3 barrier. Upon illumination with ultrafast visible-to-near-infrared (VIS-NIR) light pulses, the local field from the nanojunction creates a strong gate-tunable second-order nonlinearity in the graphene and produces a substantial difference-frequency (DFG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) response detected by the nanojunction. Spectrally sharp, gate-tunable extinction features (>99.9%) are observed in the VIS-NIR and SFG spectral ranges, in parameter regimes that are positively correlated with the enhanced nonlinear response. Abstract:Nonlinear enhancement is experimentally demonstrated by depositing graphene scraps from graphene ethanol dispersion onto a tapered microfiber. The enhancement of the nonlinearity is verified by observing the four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in the homemade graphene-deposited microfiber (GDMF). When the incident pump power is 24.2 dBm, the FWM conversion efficiency in the GDMF reaches -57.1 dB. Compared to the bare microfiber with the same dimensions, the conversion efficiency is improved by more than 3 dB. Our fabricated GDMF provides a simple way to enhance the fiber nonlinearity, and it will be suitable for nonlinear applications such as wavelength conversion and other optical signal processing operations.

Abstract:The control of optical properties by electric means is the key to optoelectronic applications. For atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials, the natural advantage lies in that the carrier doping could be readily controlled through the electric gating effect, possibly affecting the optical properties. By exploiting this advantage, we studied nonlinear optical responses from doped graphene, including both coherent nonlinear processes such as the second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG), and the incoherent ultrafast photoluminescence (PL). Abstract:The rapid development of graphene has opened up exciting new fields in graphene plasmonics and nonlinear optics. Graphene's unique two-dimensional band structure provides extraordinary linear and nonlinear optical properties, which have led to extreme optical confinement in graphene plasmonics and ultrahigh nonlinear optical coefficients, respectively. The synergy between graphene's linear and nonlinear optical properties gave rise to nonlinear graphene plasmonics, which greatly augments graphene-based nonlinear device performance beyond a billion-fold. This nascent field of research will eventually find far-reaching revolutionary technological applications that require device miniaturization, low power consumption and a broad range of operating wavelengths approaching the far-infrared, such as optical computing, medical instrumentation and security applications.

Abstract:Pristine, undoped graphene has a constant absorption of 2.3 % across the visible to near-infrared (VIS-NIR) region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Under certain conditions, such as nanostructuring and intense gating, graphene can interact more robustly with VIS-NIR light and exhibit a large nonlinear optical response. Here, we explore the optical properties of graphene/LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ nanostructures, where nanojunctions formed at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface enable large (~10$^8$ V/m) electric fields to be applied to graphene over a scale of ~10 nm. Upon illumination with ultrafast VIS-NIR light, graphene/LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ nanostructures produce broadband THz emission as well as a sum-frequency generated (SFG) response. Strong spectrally sharp, gate-tunable extinction features (>99.99%) are observed in both the VIS-NIR and SFG regions alongside significant intensification of the nonlinear response. The observed gate-tunable strong graphene-light interaction and nonlinear optical response are of fundamental interest and open the way for future exploitation in graphene-based optical devices.

Abstract:Graphene has shown promising perspectives in optical active components due to the large active-control of its permittivity-variation. This paper systematically reviews the recent developments of graphene-based optical modulators, including material property, single-layer , multi-layer , few-layer graphene-based modulators and corresponding figure-of-merits.The results showed graphene is an excellent material for enhancing silicons weak modulation capability after it is integrated into the silicon platform, showing significant influence on optical interconnects in future integrated optoelectronic circuits.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to compare the difference in nonlinear optical properties between graphene dispersions and thin films. We experimentally demonstrate that Graphene-N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone dispersions were shown to exhibit nonlinear scattering at the 1.2 mu m wavelength, femtosecond laser regime. This has potential uses for optical limiting and general laser safety. Whereas both graphene and graphene-Poly(nnethyl methacrylate) composite films (fabricated via wet chemistry techniques) display strong saturable absorption, and look to be viable as a mode-locking material. Graphene looks promising for the planned next step of 2 mu m mode-locking.

Abstract:With a specific focus on graphene‐ferrite nanocomposites, this comprehensive review provides insight into their nonlinear and optical limiting features. The intriguing combination of graphene electronic structure and the versatility of ferrites results in a diverse range of composites materials with exceptional properties. This unique synergy opens up numerous practical applications across different sectors. The review paper, which primarily focuses on recent advances in research, delves into the structural characteristics and attributes of these hybrids, highlighting their behaviour in nonlinear refraction, nonlinear absorption and optical limiting. Further, the explorations of cutting edge strategies for the development of wavelength and intensity dependent optical limiters are detailed. Additionally, there view paper emphasizes the challenges that still need to be overcome to fully utilise graphene‐ ferrite composites in nonlinear optical process and optical limiting. Negative Kerr nonlinearity of graphene as seen via chirped-pulse-pumped self-phase modulation

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a negative Kerr nonlinearity for quasi-undoped graphene. Hereto, we introduce the method of chirped-pulse-pumped self-phase modulation and apply it to graphene-covered silicon waveguides at telecom wavelengths. The extracted Kerr-nonlinear index for graphene equals n2,gr = -10^(-13) m^2/W. Whereas the sign of n2,gr turns out to be negative in contrast to what has been assumed so far, its magnitude is in correspondence with that observed in earlier experiments. Graphene's negative Kerr nonlinearity strongly impacts how graphene should be exploited for enhancing the nonlinear response of photonic (integrated) devices exhibiting a positive nonlinearity. It also opens up the possibility of using graphene to annihilate unwanted nonlinear effects in such devices, to develop unexplored approaches for establishing Kerr processes, and to extend the scope of the "periodic poling" method often used for second-order nonlinearities towards third-order Kerr processes. Because of the generic nature of the chirped-pulse-pumped self-phase modulation method, it will allow fully characterizing the Kerr nonlinearity of essentially any novel (2D) material.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the intensity-dependent optical nonlinearity in graphene-aided D-microfiber, by tuning the chemical potential of graphene and varying radial distance and radii of the D-microfiber. Utilizing an interplay between graphene and the enhanced evanescent field of a guided mode in the waveguide of interest, the net utility of nonlinear coefficient is harnessed up to a very high value of 106 W-1 m(-1). Importantly, which is similar to two orders of magnitude larger than in PMMA-graphene-PMMA waveguide. The highly dispersive nature of the waveguide, D similar to 10(3) ps/nm-km, and large nonlinear figure-of-merit, FOMNL similar to 1.29, have raised the possibilities of utilizing slow light structures to operate devices at few watts power level with microscale length. Abstract:Graphene is a useful saturable absorber in a variety of lasers working in mode-locking or Q-switch regimes. The optical performance of chemically synthesized graphene is still not completely characterized. In this study, the saturable absorption and the nonlinear refractive index of graphene flakes in N-methylpyrrolidone, in both liquid and solid phases, have been studied at 800 nm with the z-scan technique using femtosecond laser pulses. The results obtained using a Ti:sapphire laser oscillator in the mode-locking regime (6 fs, 78 MHz) or in the continuous wave shows that the optical properties of graphene have a thermal origin, while at the lower repetition rate and higher energy and intensity of a Ti:sapphire amplifier (95 fs, 1 kHz), it shows the electronic Kerr effect. Solid samples with very high optical densities, equivalent to 60 layers of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), can be fabricated. They show a higher saturation intensity ( I s ≈ 100 GW cm–2) than CVD-grown (74 MW cm–2) or epitaxially grown (4 GW cm–2) graphene and intensity-dependent changes in transmission from 25% to 43%. Abstract:Nonlinear nanophotonics leverages engineered nanostructures to funnel light into small volumes and intensify nonlinear optical processes with spectral and spatial control. Owing to its intrinsically large and electrically tunable nonlinear optical response, graphene is an especially promising nanomaterial for nonlinear optoelectronic applications. Here we report on exceptionally strong optical nonlinearities in graphene–insulator–metal heterostructures, which demonstrate an enhancement by three orders of magnitude in the third-harmonic signal compared with that of bare graphene. Furthermore, by increasing the graphene Fermi energy through an external gate voltage, we find that graphene plasmons mediate the optical nonlinearity and modify the third-harmonic signal. Our findings show that graphene–insulator–metal is a promising heterostructure for optically controlled and electrically tunable nano-optoelectronic components.

Abstract:Tuning of nonlinear optical responses is the essence to many photonics and optoelectronics applications. Due to the low-dimensionality and dispersion of massless Dirac Fermions, the nonlinear optical susceptibilities of graphene can be readily controlled via electrical gating. Based on the quantum interference between multi-photon transition pathways, the tuning mechanism of graphene nonlinearity is intrinsically different from most other systems. The phenomenon enables investigations into some nonlinear optical processes from fundamental regards. It also exhibits appealing features contrasting conventional materials, which can be desirable for novel device applications.
