Abstract:The bi-annual TARK conferences bring together researchers from a wide variety of fields sharing a common interest in reasoning about rationality and knowledge. The impact of this tradition, going back to 1986, shows in many of today's research trends, and in a sense of intellectual community beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. The 2001 conference in Siena is very much in the same spirit. Invited speakers are Michael Bacharach (economics), Craig Boutilier (computer science), Richard Jeffrey (philosophy), and Daphne Koller (computer science), with further invited presentations by Timothy Williamson (philosophy), Johan van Benthem (logic), Moni Naor (computer science) and Giacomo Rizzolatti (neuroscience). Moreover, out of 71 high-quality submissions, 21 were eventually selected, clustering in such topics as probability and uncertainty, linguistic semantics, logics for communication, belief revision, game theory, and various interactions between all of these. This volume documents most of the resulting program for the TARK participants - and it will hopefully find a broader audience as well. Staging an event like this is a major collaborative production. The program committee consisted of Samson Abramsky (Oxford), Giacomo Bonanno (Davis), Nicola Dimitri (Siena), Joseph Halpern (Cotnell), Wiebe van der Hoek (Utrecht), Angelika Kratzer (Amherst), Bart Lipman (Madison), Hans Rott (Regensburg), Ariel Rubinstein (Tel Aviv and Princeton), Gabriel Sandu (Helsinki), Yoav Shoham (Stanford), and Tuomas Sandholm (Saint Louis). The committee was assisted by some active anonymous reviewers. Equally indispendable were the local organizers Nicola Dimitri and Alessandro Vercelli in Siena, assisted by Giovanni Forconi, whose efforts show on the TARK 2001 homepage http://www.econ-pol.unisi.it/tark/. At the Amsterdam end, Ingrid van Loon and her collaborators helped coordinate the whole process, as well as these Proceedings, in cooperation with Omnipress and Morgan Kaufmann.
