Making Formulog Fast: An Argument for Unconventional Datalog Evaluation (Extended Version)

Abstract:By combining Datalog, SMT solving, and functional programming, the language Formulog provides an appealing mix of features for implementing SMT-based static analyses (e.g., refinement type checking, symbolic execution) in a natural, declarative way. At the same time, the performance of its custom Datalog solver can be an impediment to using Formulog beyond prototyping -- a common problem for Datalog variants that aspire to solve large problem instances. In this work we speed up Formulog evaluation, with surprising results: while 2.2x speedups are obtained by using the conventional techniques for high-performance Datalog (e.g., compilation, specialized data structures), the big wins come by abandoning the central assumption in modern performant Datalog engines, semi-naive Datalog evaluation. In its place, we develop eager evaluation, a concurrent Datalog evaluation algorithm that explores the logical inference space via a depth-first traversal order. In practice, eager evaluation leads to an advantageous distribution of Formulog's SMT workload to external SMT solvers and improved SMT solving times: our eager evaluation extensions to the Formulog interpreter and Soufflé's code generator achieve mean 5.2x and 7.6x speedups, respectively, over the optimized code generated by off-the-shelf Soufflé on SMT-heavy Formulog benchmarks. Using compilation and eager evaluation, Formulog implementations of refinement type checking, bottom-up pointer analysis, and symbolic execution achieve speedups on 20 out of 23 benchmarks over previously published, hand-tuned analyses written in F#, Java, and C++, providing strong evidence that Formulog can be the basis of a realistic platform for SMT-based static analysis. Moreover, our experience adds nuance to the conventional wisdom that semi-naive evaluation is the one-size-fits-all best Datalog evaluation algorithm for static analysis workloads.

Formalizing Mason-Stothers Theorem and its Corollaries in Lean 4

Abstract:The ABC conjecture implies many conjectures and theorems in number theory, including the celebrated Fermat's Last Theorem. Mason-Stothers Theorem is a function field analogue of the ABC conjecture that admits a much more elementary proof with many interesting consequences, including a polynomial version of Fermat's Last Theorem. While years of dedicated effort are expected for a full formalization of Fermat's Last Theorem, the simple proof of Mason-Stothers Theorem and its corollaries calls for an immediate formalization. We formalize an elementary proof of by Snyder in Lean 4, and also formalize many consequences of Mason-Stothers, including (i) non-solvability of Fermat-Cartan equations in polynomials, (ii) non-parametrizability of a certain elliptic curve, and (iii) Davenport's Theorem. We compare our work to existing formalizations of Mason-Stothers by Eberl in Isabelle and Wagemaker in Lean 3 respectively. Our formalization is based on the mathlib4 library of Lean 4, and is currently being ported back to mathlib4.

Abstract:Autoformalization, the conversion of natural language mathematics into formal languages, offers significant potential for advancing mathematical reasoning. However, existing efforts are limited to formal languages with substantial online corpora and struggle to keep pace with rapidly evolving languages like Lean 4. To bridge this gap, we propose a new benchmark \textbf{Form}alization for \textbf{L}ean~\textbf{4} (\textbf{\name}) designed to evaluate the autoformalization capabilities of large language models (LLMs). This benchmark encompasses a comprehensive assessment of questions, answers, formal statements, and proofs. Additionally, we introduce a \textbf{P}rocess-\textbf{S}upervised \textbf{V}erifier (\textbf{PSV}) model that leverages the precise feedback from Lean 4 compilers to enhance autoformalization. Our experiments demonstrate that the PSV method improves autoformalization, enabling higher accuracy using less filtered training data. Furthermore, when fine-tuned with data containing detailed process information, PSV can leverage the data more effectively, leading to more significant improvements in autoformalization for Lean 4. FIRE 6.5: Feynman Integral Reduction with New Simplification Library

Abstract:FIRE is a program which performs integration-by-parts (IBP) reductions of Feynman integrals. Originally, the C++ version of FIRE relies on the computer algebra system Fermat by Robert Lewis to simplify rational functions. We present an upgrade of FIRE which incorporates a new library FUEL initially described in a separate publication, which enables a flexible choice of third-party computer algebra systems as simplifiers, as well as efficient communications with some of the simplifiers as C++ libraries rather than through Unix pipes. We achieve significant speedups for IBP reductions of Feynman integrals involving many kinematic variables, when using an open source backend based on FLINT newly added in this work, or the Symbolica backend developed by Ben Ruijl as a potential successor of FORM. Summary of revisions: A new library FUEL [2] is used as a core component of the new version of FIRE to access different computer algebra systems as simplifiers of rational function expressions. Since the first release of FUEL described elsewhere, FUEL version 1.0 here has been enhanced with a new backend based on the open source library FLINT [3] that provides highly performant simplification of rational functions. Nature of problem: Feynman integrals of a given family are reduced to a finite set of master integrals, by solving linear equations arising from integration by parts, using Gaussian elimination. The coefficient of the linear equations are generally rational functions in kinematic variables and the spacetime dimension, and the simplification of such rational functions during Gaussian elimination is a key task that is improved in this upgrade of FIRE . Solution method: Computer algebra systems with state-of-the-art capabilities for polynomial GCD computations are used as simplification backends, or simplifiers in short. Due to the design of FIRE , text strings are used as the exchange format for rational functions before and after simplification. A fast C++ parser is written to parse strings into the internal format of an external simplifer, FLINT [3], with state-of-the-art performance for multivariate polynomial calculations. Similarly, the simplifier Symbolica [4] has high performance in both GCD computations and parsing, and has been integrated into FIRE. Abstract:The Rivet toolkit is the primary mechanism for phenomenological preservation of collider-physics measurements, containing both a computational core and API for analysis implementation, and a large collection of more than a thousand preserved analyses. In this note we summarise the main changes in the new Rivet 4 major release series. These include a major generalisation and more semantically coherent model for histograms and related data objects, a thorough clean-up of inelegant and legacy observable-computation tools, and new systems for extended analysis-data, incorporation of preserved machine-learning models, and serialization for high-performance computing applications. Where these changes introduce backward-incompatible interface changes, existing analyses have been updated and indications are given on how to update new analysis routines and workflows.

Abstract:In interactive theorem provers (ITPs), extensible syntax is not only crucial to lower the cognitive burden of manipulating complex mathematical objects, but plays a critical role in developing reusable abstractions in libraries. Most ITPs support such extensions in the form of restrictive "syntax sugar" substitutions and other ad hoc mechanisms, which are too rudimentary to support many desirable abstractions. As a result, libraries are littered with unnecessary redundancy. Tactic languages in these systems are plagued by a seemingly unrelated issue: accidental name capture, which often produces unexpected and counterintuitive behavior. We take ideas from the Scheme family of programming languages and solve these two problems simultaneously by proposing a novel hygienic macro system custom-built for ITPs. We further describe how our approach can be extended to cover type-directed macro expansion resulting in a single, uniform system offering multiple abstraction levels that range from supporting simplest syntax sugars to elaboration of formerly baked-in syntax. We have implemented our new macro system and integrated it into the new version of the Lean theorem prover, Lean 4. Despite its expressivity, the macro system is simple enough that it can easily be integrated into other systems.

In this paper, we consider "form" as an operator acting on the set of classes of algebras and extend it to the closure operator "tau form" for some subsystem functors tau. New results are obtained and some known results are generalized. In addition, the algebras in taufortm are considered.

Abstract:This volume contains the proceedings of F-IDE 2018, the fourth international workshop on Formal Integrated Development Environment, which was held as a FLoC 2018 satellite event, on July 14, 2018, in Oxford, England. High levels of safety, security and also privacy standards require the use of formal methods to specify and develop compliant software (sub)systems. Any standard comes with an assessment process, which requires a complete documentation of the application in order to ease the justification of design choices and the review of code and proofs. Thus tools are needed for handling specifications, program constructs and verification artifacts. The aim of the F-IDE workshop is to provide a forum for presenting and discussing research efforts as well as experience returns on design, development and usage of formal IDE aiming at making formal methods "easier" for both specialists and non-specialists.

Abstract:In this work we report on a new version of FeynCalc, a Mathematica package widely used in the particle physics community for manipulating quantum field theoretical expressions and calculating Feynman diagrams. Highlights of the new version include greatly improved capabilities for doing multiloop calculations, including topology identification and minimization, optimized tensor reduction, rewriting of scalar products in terms of inverse denominators, detection of equivalent or scaleless loop integrals, derivation of Symanzik polynomials, Feynman parametric as well as graph representation for master integrals and initial support for handling differential equations and iterated integrals. In addition to that, the new release also features completely rewritten routines for color algebra simplifications, inclusion of symmetry relations between arguments of Passarino--Veltman functions, tools for determining matching coefficients and quantifying the agreement between numerical results, improved export to LaTeX and first steps towards a better support of calculations involving light-cone vectors.

Automated Symbolic and Numerical Testing of DLMF Formulae using Computer Algebra Systems

Abstract:We have developed an automated procedure for symbolic and numerical testing of formulae extracted from the NIST Digital Library of Mathematical Functions (DLMF). For the NIST Digital Repository of Mathematical Formulae, we have developed conversion tools from semantic LaTeX to the Computer Algebra System (CAS) Maple which relies on Youssef's part-of-math tagger. We convert a test data subset of 4,078 semantic LaTeX DLMF formulae %extracted from the DLMF to the native CAS representation and then apply an automated scheme for symbolic and numerical testing and verification. Our framework is implemented using Java and Maple. We describe in detail the conversion process which is required so that the CAS can correctly interpret the mathematical representation of the formulae. We describe the improvement of the effectiveness of our automated scheme through incremental enhancement (making more precise) of the mathematical semantic markup for the formulae.

FormalAlign: Automated Alignment Evaluation for Autoformalization

Abstract:Autoformalization aims to convert informal mathematical proofs into machine-verifiable formats, bridging the gap between natural and formal languages. However, ensuring semantic alignment between the informal and formalized statements remains challenging. Existing approaches heavily rely on manual verification, hindering scalability. To address this, we introduce \textsc{FormalAlign}, the first automated framework designed for evaluating the alignment between natural and formal languages in autoformalization. \textsc{FormalAlign} trains on both the autoformalization sequence generation task and the representational alignment between input and output, employing a dual loss that combines a pair of mutually enhancing autoformalization and alignment tasks. Evaluated across four benchmarks augmented by our proposed misalignment strategies, \textsc{FormalAlign} demonstrates superior performance. In our experiments, \textsc{FormalAlign} outperforms GPT-4, achieving an Alignment-Selection Score 11.58\% higher on \forml-Basic (99.21\% vs. 88.91\%) and 3.19\% higher on MiniF2F-Valid (66.39\% vs. 64.34\%). This effective alignment evaluation significantly reduces the need for manual verification. Abstract:We present phi-4, a 14-billion parameter language model developed with a training recipe that is centrally focused on data quality. Unlike most language models, where pre-training is based primarily on organic data sources such as web content or code, phi-4 strategically incorporates synthetic data throughout the training process. While previous models in the Phi family largely distill the capabilities of a teacher model (specifically GPT-4), phi-4 substantially surpasses its teacher model on STEM-focused QA capabilities, giving evidence that our data-generation and post-training techniques go beyond distillation. Despite minimal changes to the phi-3 architecture, phi-4 achieves strong performance relative to its size -- especially on reasoning-focused benchmarks -- due to improved data, training curriculum, and innovations in the post-training scheme.

Abstract:The automated theorem prover Leo-III for classical higher-order logic with Henkin semantics and choice is presented. Leo-III is based on extensional higher-order paramodulation and accepts every common TPTP dialect (FOF, TFF, THF), including their recent extensions to rank-1 polymorphism (TF1, TH1). In addition, the prover natively supports almost every normal higher-order modal logic. Leo-III cooperates with first-order reasoning tools using translations to many-sorted first-order logic and produces verifiable proof certificates. The prover is evaluated on heterogeneous benchmark sets.

Abstract:Transform methods, like Laplace and Fourier, are frequently used for analyzing the dynamical behaviour of engineering and physical systems, based on their transfer function, and frequency response or the solutions of their corresponding differential equations. In this paper, we present an ongoing project, which focuses on the higher-order logic formalization of transform methods using HOL Light theorem prover. In particular, we present the motivation of the formalization, which is followed by the related work. Next, we present the task completed so far while highlighting some of the challenges faced during the formalization. Finally, we present a roadmap to achieve our objectives, the current status and the future goals for this project.
