Abstract:In this paper we perform a formal asymptotic analysis on a kinetic model for reactive mixtures in order to derive a reaction-diffusion system of Maxwell-Stefan type. More specifically, we start from the kinetic model of simple reacting spheres for a quaternary mixture of monatomic ideal gases that undergoes a reversible chemical reaction of bimolecular type. Then, we consider a scaling describing a physical situation in which mechanical collisions play a dominant role in the evolution process, while chemical reactions are slow, and compute explicitly the production terms associated to the concentration and momentum balance equations for each species in the reactive mixture. Finally, we prove that, under isothermal assumptions, the limit equations for the scaled kinetic model is the reaction diffusion system of Maxwell-Stefan type.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: **How to derive a Maxwell - Stefan - type reaction - diffusion system from the Simple Reacting Sphere (SRS) kinetic model?** Specifically, the authors start from the SRS kinetic model describing a quaternary ideal gas mixture, and these gases undergo reversible bimolecular chemical reactions. By introducing appropriate scaling, elastic collisions dominate the evolution process, while chemical reactions are relatively slow. Eventually, under the isothermal assumption, they prove that the limit equation of the scaled kinetic model is a Maxwell - Stefan - type reaction - diffusion system. ### Main contributions 1. **Derivation from micro - to macro - levels**: The author links the SRS kinetic model at the micro - level with the Maxwell - Stefan reaction - diffusion system at the macro - level through formal asymptotic analysis. 2. **Explicit calculation of production terms**: The author explicitly calculates the production terms in the mass density and momentum balance equations for each species. 3. **First attempt**: As far as the authors know, this is the first attempt to formally derive a Maxwell - Stefan - type reaction - diffusion system from the SRS kinetic model. ### Key formulas - **Bimolecular reaction**: \[ A_1 + A_2 \leftrightarrow A_3 + A_4 \] - **Mass conservation equation**: \[ \frac{\partial \rho_i}{\partial t} + \nabla \cdot (\rho_i u_i) = r_i \] where \( r_i \) is the mass density generation rate due to chemical reactions. - **Maxwell - Stefan equation**: \[ \nabla c_i = -\frac{1}{c} \sum_{s = 1, s\neq i}^4 \frac{c_s J_i - c_i J_s}{D_{is}} \] where \( D_{is} \) is the diffusion coefficient between species \( A_i \) and \( A_s \). ### Conclusion The main objective of this paper is to formally derive a Maxwell - Stefan - type reaction - diffusion system from the SRS kinetic model and prove the rationality of this derivation under isothermal conditions. This work provides an important theoretical basis for understanding and modeling diffusion and chemical reactions in multi - component reactive mixtures.
