Abstract:We construct the coarse index class with support condition (as an element of coarse $K$-homology) of an equivariant Dirac operator on a complete Riemannian manifold endowed with a proper, isometric action of a group. We further show a coarse relative index theorem and discuss the compatibility of the index with the suspension isomorphism.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to construct a coarse index class with support conditions on a complete Riemannian manifold with an appropriate group action. Specifically, the authors consider a \(G\)-equivariant Dirac operator \(/\!D\) with an isometric and proper discrete group \(G\) action on a complete Riemannian manifold \(M\), and this operator is locally uniformly positive definite outside a certain invariant subset \(A\) of \(M\). They hope to construct an index class: \[ \text{Ind}(\!/\!D, \text{on}(A)) \in KXG_n(A) \] Here \(KXG_n(A)\) is the value of the coarse homology theory \(KXG\) on the coarse space represented by \(M\). The difficulty in this construction is that, unlike the classical definition, \(KXG(M)\) is not defined through the K - theory of a specific Roe algebra, but is constructed through a more general framework. ### Main contributions of the paper 1. **Constructing the coarse index class**: The authors describe in detail how to construct the index class of the Dirac operator with support conditions in the framework of coarse geometry and embed it into the \(KXG\) theory. 2. **Basic properties**: - **Locality**: Prove the Coarse Relative Index Theorem, which shows that the index class has locality. - **Compatibility with suspension isomorphisms**: Prove the compatibility of the index class with suspension isomorphisms. ### Background and motivation - **Coarse geometry**: Coarse geometry is a tool for studying large - scale geometric properties, originally introduced by John Roe. It has wide applications in index theory, geometric group theory, isomorphism conjectures (such as Baum - Connes and Farrell - Jones conjectures), surgery theory, and the classification of positive scalar curvature metrics. - **Index theory**: Roe observed that the index of the Dirac operator can be defined as a K - theory class of a certain Roe algebra on a complete Riemannian manifold, thus capturing the large - scale properties of the manifold. This index class contains non - trivial information about the non - invertibility of the Dirac operator. ### Specific methods - **Controlled Hilbert spaces**: The authors introduce the concept of \(X\)-controlled Hilbert spaces and define locally finite \(X\)-controlled Hilbert spaces. These spaces are used to construct the coarse homology theory \(KXG\). - **Local finiteness**: To ensure that \(KXG\) is a single - object \(C^*\)-category, the authors restrict the locally finite \(X\)-controlled Hilbert spaces. - **Constructing \(KXG\)**: Construct \(KXG\) by defining the \(C^*\)-category \(C(X)\) of locally finite \(X\)-controlled Hilbert spaces and taking its K - theory \(K(C(X))\). ### Applications - **Abstract boundary value problems**: The authors show how to use these index classes and their basic properties to deal with abstract boundary value problems of the Dirac operator, thus reproducing the main results of Piazza - Schick and Zeidler on secondary coarse index invariants. ### Conclusion The main goal of this paper is to provide a framework in which the index classes of Dirac operators with support conditions can be systematically constructed and studied in the context of coarse geometry. This framework is applicable not only to the case of free actions but also to the more general case of proper actions.
